Things The Sandlot Kids Wouldn’t Recognize About Baseball Today
By Jennifer Asencio
| Updated

The Sandlot is a beloved coming-of-age movie about baseball. The 1993 comedy-drama not only resonated with fans but is frequently quoted in memes to this day. It is a touching period piece about a summer that shapes the entire life of the main character, Scott Smalls.
In it, “Smalls” (Tom Guiry) is the new kid in town, having moved to San Fernando Valley in 1962 with his mother and stepfather, Bill (Denis Leary). Encouraged to go make friends, he stumbles upon the titular lot, which is used by eight boys for a never-ending baseball practice. They are led by Benny (Mike Vitar), a talented center fielder who takes Smalls under his wing and teaches him the game.

They have typical pre-adolescent summer adventures with girls, with Little League, and with each other. But the most important test for Smalls and the entire gang is Hercules, a gigantic hound who dwells in the yard of Mr. Mertle (James Earl Jones), whose home is adjacent to the back of the lot. Hercules likes baseballs, so when a prized ball is hit over the fence, the boys have to figure out how to get it back.
This heartwarming family film helped form the childhoods of many 80s and 90s kids, relying more on its child stars than on the famous adult actors (Smalls’ mother, played by Raiders of the Lost Ark star Karen Allen, doesn’t even get a name). The year in the movie is 1962, a more innocent time when kids weren’t bogged down by so much technology, not even the number of TV stations we have these days. The boys from The Sandlot would probably be flabbergasted by the ability to play their favorite game on Xbox instead of in the lot, but that’s not all that would surprise them.

They probably wouldn’t recognize baseball if they were suddenly time-warped into 2026, because it is vastly different from the game they spent so much time practicing. Over the intervening years, MLB has made some major changes to the rules and the game. Sure, it’s still nine innings, with three strikes making an out and four balls making a walk, but other alterations made to the game would seem to the kids from The Sandlot as though they didn’t belong.
In honor of baseball’s nine innings, here are nine things about baseball that would be entirely new to the Sandlot kids.
1. More Teams Than You Can Count

1961-62 is known as “the expansion era” because during that time, a total of 10 teams were added to Major League Baseball, including my beloved New York Mets. The sport was already divided into two leagues, the National League and the American League, and the expansion era put 10 teams into each league. Today, each league has 15 teams, for a total of 30, and they are further subdivided into East, West, and Central divisions based on their locations.
Some of the historic teams the boys might remember from 1962 have moved, changed names, or disbanded, so while old standbys like the Boston Red Sox or New York Yankees would still be familiar, the Washington Nationals or Atlanta Braves would seem misplaced, and they’d have never heard of the Colorado Rockies or either Florida team.
2. Ghost Runners

For some reason, the people in charge of baseball decided that it was too long and slow, especially if it went into extra innings beyond the regulation nine due to a tie. One of the changes implemented to streamline and shorten the game was the “ghost runner,” which is an automatic baserunner who takes the field for the batting team if the game goes into overtime. While some games in the past have gone on for several hours and dozens of innings, the ghost runner rule wasn’t made a permanent part of the game until 2023.
The Sandlot kids probably used ghost runners themselves to compensate for the fact that there were only nine of them, but the only purpose they have in MLB is to shorten the game by giving each team a small boost in extra innings. The argument in favor of the ghost runner is that it cuts costs and saves time, while the argument against is that it ruins the purity of the competition. One wonders what the boys would make of the ghost runner rule.
3. Three Strikes, Yer Out?

Umpires, the referees of baseball, have been known throughout the years to make some serious errors that have cost teams important games. They are responsible for determining officially if a pitch is a ball or a strike, and it used to be that they had the final word. For fans, getting mad at the umps was as much a part of the game as pitchers and batters and bases.
Starting in 2026, MLB is using the Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) Challenge System, which allows an umpire’s call to be challenged.
Each team only gets two, and if the challenge fails, they lose one. Whether it’s a pitcher who thinks he threw a strike or a manager who thinks his batter was just dealt a ball, teams still need to be careful how they use ABS challenges. The only reason ABS challenges can exist is that technology has evolved way beyond what the Sandlot boys might recognize, allowing each pitch to be analyzed for its position relative to the batter, something that used to rely on an umpire’s eye.
4. Pitches Are Limited-Time Only

Once upon a time, pitchers could take as long as they wanted to deliver a pitch. This resulted in tension between the pitcher and batter as the two stared one another down until the pitcher finally decided what to throw, making each pitch high drama.
In 2023, the pitch clock was implemented, which limited the amount of time the pitcher had to decide on his pitch to a mere 15 seconds (18 if there are baserunners).
The purpose of the pitch clock was to shave more time off the game, and it did result in runtimes decreasing by an average of 25 minutes. But the high drama of the duel between pitcher and batter is an aspect of the game the Sandlot boys would miss.
5. Stats for Everything

Baseball statistics used to be simple: how many strikeouts did a pitcher get? How many hits did a batter get? These statistics were general and imperfect, however, and the computing era of the 1970s and 80s saw a new system called Sabremetrics used to analyze the game.
Sabremetrics made the existing stats, like home runs and batting averages, a little more precise by adding metrics such as on-base percentage (OPS), which included batters who got on base without hitting the ball (such as by a walk or being hit by a pitch). This improved the understanding of each player’s contribution to the team, particularly in the case of pitchers.
As technology further improved, a second era of statistics arose, called the Statcast era. Today, there are statistics for how fast a ball is hit, how many times a batter is expected to make it on base, and even how valuable a player is to a team compared to an average player in his position. The mountain of new statistics is dizzying for many long-time fans, but maybe professionals like Smalls and Benny would understand them.
6. Designated Hitters

The idea of a player not batting for themselves would be alien to the Sandlot kids. Until 1973, even pitchers went up to bat, traditionally ninth in the lineup.
Then, the American League introduced the idea of the designated hitter, a batter who replaced the pitcher’s turn and could be added anywhere in the lineup; many teams would put in a slugger who didn’t play the field but only batted.
The National League persisted in having pitchers bat until the designated hitter rule was made universal in 2022.
Now it applies to all teams, and only rare pitchers get up to bat. While the designated hitter allows pitchers to focus on their craft and adds an element of strategy to the batting lineup, the tradition of the pitcher batting last is something the boys would have grown up with.
7. Expanded Playoffs

Since 1903, the World Series has been a contest between the best teams in both leagues, National and American. This was determined by which teams in each league had the best win-loss records.
In 1969, after the expansion era, the leagues split into divisions, East and West. Already, the Sandlot boys are in unfamiliar territory, as the semi-final round, known as the playoffs, was introduced.
The teams with the best records in the East and West now compete for the league title and the right to continue to the World Series. In 2026, there are 30 teams, and each league is split into three divisions, meaning there are even more playoff games as more rounds were added to contest ties and accommodate the expansions.

These days, the National and American leagues each have six teams that play post-season: the top in each of the three divisions, and three “wild card” teams that place based on their win-loss records.
While sometimes this can be confusing and means that the “best” don’t always make it to the end, it also adds more competition to the final rounds and allows teams that had good seasons a chance at the finals. Who knows what the boys would make of all these post-season games. To me, they’re bonus baseball.
8. Instant Replays

The instant replay has long been a staple of football, hockey, and basketball, so it was surprising that baseball didn’t start using it until 2008, and didn’t start using it regularly until 2014.
As with many of the other calls the umpires were responsible for, the instant replay gave managers and players the chance to have the action reviewed on video to determine if a call was right.

These days, there’s an entire center in Manhattan that is responsible for reviewing plays and confirming or overturning bad calls. While this has improved the game (and also showed which umpires actually were bums), fans and players alike have spent a century criticizing umpires, and even today, a good argument between a manager and an ump is celebrated by fans.
The more mechanical part of the boys’ baseball thinking would probably appreciate the instant replay, but whether they would like it as fans is another question.
9. The Decline of Starting Pitchers

Once upon a time, it was very common for pitchers to pitch all nine innings of a game. Relief pitchers and “the bullpen” were available, but not such a common part of the game as they are today (remember, back then, pitchers also batted).
However, as more sophisticated statistical metrics were added to the game over the years, teams began to notice trends in pitching performance, such as a drop-off in efficiency on the third time facing the nine-man batting lineup. Starting around the late 1980s, teams began to rely more on their bullpens.
In 2026, it is very rare for a pitcher to complete a game, as starting pitchers are limited in the number of pitches they are allowed to throw and relief pitchers are put in to counter specific types of batters. The Sandlot boys might enjoy the strategy of the bullpen, but they come from an era when many great pitchers dominated the game, and that era is no more.

Professional baseball has been around for over 150 years and has seen a lot of changes, for better or worse. In 1962, when The Sandlot takes place, baseball was still more or less in its nascent form, with only the addition of new teams to change it. As baseball has gotten televised and more teams have been added, the game and its rules have changed in ways that cut costs and make it more broadcast-friendly. Whether the boys from The Sandlot would like or despise these changes is up for debate, but one thing is for sure: baseball is not the same sport they played together during that memorable summer.
For a look back at the good old days of baseball, The Sandlot is streaming on Disney+.

Brandon Marshall Makes Son Run As Discipline, Internet Reacts
It seems Brandon Marshall is unfazed by what the internet thinks of his parenting choices! The former NFL player slid in his own comment section to clock mixed reactions to how he chose to discipline his son, who’s about 10 or 11 years old. A video shared last week shows Marshall recording the boy running late at night as punishment. After his followers flooded his comment section, he responded to a select few.

Brandon Marshall Tells His Son To Run At 2 A.M.
Marshall first shared the discipline video last Wednesday (June 17), adding a photo of him and his son as the cover image. He tagged his son in the caption, saying, “This is my son not my friend.. . @zi3marshall.” Not much is known about Brandon’s relationship with his mini-me, who is a twin. The father and his wife, Michi Nogami-Campbell, have three children together, but mostly keep their family life private.
In the clip, Brandon Marshall is recording from the driver’s seat in a moving vehicle as his son jogs in a neighborhood. Speaking to him, Brandon Marshall explains that the run is no different from other activities they’ve done in Santa Monica that his son wanted to do. However, he said, there’s a difference between that and discipline and correction. Marshall then encourages the boy to run.
“Discipline, correction is good, even two in the morning. I don’t gotta put my hands on you, but I’m training you up to be a warrior. I’m training you up to be a warrior…to be a leader, to serve, have discipline. To be better than me. Run, run. Let’s go.”
Afterward, Marshall warned him if he didn’t start running, he’d be running three miles. “So you better start running cause you don’t know when imma tell you to stop. You don’t want to listen? We run, we work. Two in the morning, let’s go. Faster.” The former athlete challenged his son to pick up his pace to patch the car at over six miles per hour. See the interaction unfold below.
Social Media Reacts To Punishment Video
Currently, the video of Brandon Marshall’s son is the only post available on his Instagram profile. The video has over 6,700 likes and at least 800 comments as of Monday (June 22). As mentioned, his comment section is a mix of folks supporting his form of discipline and others challenging it. A few others are in agreement, but criticized Brandon for posting about it on social media.
Instagram user @channondriver, for example, commented, “You should NEVER discipline a child with embarrassment, it messes up their mental health state. Kids are people too. This is so lame. It didn’t need to be public if this is how you wanted to discipline that’s fine. You did this to show off on the internet. I hope you take this down. And I read some of your comments learn how to take constructive criticism my guy. Most of us aren’t trying to hurt you just giving good feedback. Take care.”
@cbsmyheart wrote, “Y’all acting like this is hurting HIS SON. He’s teaching. Correcting behaviors before the streets do.”
While @marquisegoodwin joked, “Speed up nephew 😂”
@buttawiththejam commented, “Do what you must! My son wanted to be a clown in class. Tell them jokes while you run these suicides & burpees since you think school is play time. Mom is NOT playing so he had to tighten up.”
@coachjayroberts added, “This sir is wack and embarrassing I have 4 young men all whom I had to discipline at some point but I never embarrass my children especially in this era. This has gone viral so the amount of jokes and laughs from his peers he has gotten could shatter his confidence. Kings (Real) Kings move with a stern but fair hand and always protect the kingdom. This is completely not needed but do what you do.”
@djblank75 commented, “That’s family business, not instagram business 🤷🏾♂️.”
“Great job! It’s best coming from someone who truly loves him. Someone who would never put him in harm’s way. That’s you @bmarshall. He’ll thank you for it later,” @rodsmith80 wrote.
@reneparra said, “These boys need this type of discipline! I’ll never tell my son’s dad to chill when he’s doing man/father things. Handle it so the other man doesn’t have to do it for you. Good job @bmarshall 👏.”
@sbgeorges added, “And this is on social media because?”
“Why post this? Discipline your way but why post it. It does seem like clout bait,” @bigeazy56 commented.
@nlmf.jermo wrote, “It’s crazy how people in the comments criticizing his parenting skills but when his son start playing sports the coaches gone make him run for the same things his dad is making him run for.”
Marshall Clocks Critics & Agrees With Supporters
In the days since it was posted, Brandon Marshall’s video ended up on The Shade Room’s Instagram account. By then, he had hopped into his own comment section to clear the critics, but also to respond to those seeing his way of doing things.
He liked the following comment, “Y’all acting like this is hurting HIS SON. He’s teaching. Correcting behaviors before the streets do.”
Another comment by @djblank79 said the punishment is “family business, not Instagram business.” To that, Marshall replied, “That’s your way this my way.”
To another comment telling him to lead by example and criticizing Marshall for driving, the former NFL player replied:
“I just had a procedure on my back. I can’t run. But if you know me you know I lead from the front in ALL rooms.”
Marshall also replied, “Facts” to a comment that says, “Our job is to build men, not boys.”

How Acting Has Made Chloe Bailey A Better Artist
Chloe Bailey is getting real about her music journey over the past few years, reflecting on her two studio albums, “In Pieces” and “Trouble in Paradise.” Most recently, she released a mixtape with Timbaland titled “Resurrection.” In a new interview, the Chloe x Halle singer says her work in other professional ventures, such as acting, has helped make her a better musician.

Speaking with Extra, Chloe opened up about her new film, “Strung,” premiering on Peacock, and said that taking on new roles in front of the camera has made her a better artist and “storyteller.”
“You have to be raw and vulnerable, and you have to let your guard down. And with music, it’s all about performing, putting on a show. And that’s what I’ve always been used to. So right now my next goal is to [tell a story] better. But I feel like acting is getting me there more and more because you tell the story of someone else that has nothing to do with you. And there’s beauty in the rawness,” she said.
Chloe Bailey Reflects On Releasing A Mixtape With Timbaland On Juneteenth
Over the years, Bailey has released music alongside her sister, Halle Bailey, and, of course, put out two solo albums under Beyoncé‘s Parkwood label. Her latest body of work, “Resurrection,” is a 13-track mixtape packed with alternative R&B hits.
About the project, released on Juneteenth, Chloe said it was meant to be a celebratory moment for her and her fans.
“I created this mixtape with Timberland… and we’re releasing it on Juneteenth! It’s a celebration of the beauty within our community and our power that we hold within our skin, but also he has been such a prominent figure within the music industry,” she said. “And I’ve been so inspired by him and Missy Elliott. Like I’ve never been shy of crediting them for the producer that I am.”
Chloe Bailey Created ‘Resurrection’ In A Very Short Amount Of Time

Elsewhere in the interview, Chloe reflected on how she and Timbaland managed to complete the project in only two months.
“He’s amazing. His ear is impeccable. And what I also learned from him is it’s okay to strip things down sometimes,” she said. “Sometimes, just the demo vocal of me writing the song I’d send back, he’d fall in love with that. And there were a couple times where I would recut the vocals and add a bunch of layers and he’s like, ‘No, no, no, no. Go back to the original. That’s where the heartbeat was’… and then some records he’ll let me like have my harmonies in full glory. But it was really nice learning to grab different textures in that way.”
Chloe Has More Coming Soon

“Resurrection” is just the beginning of what’s in store for Chloe. In 2024, she spoke with PEOPLE about her upcoming projects and told fans to sit tight for “exciting things coming up.”
“I’ve been more inspired than ever,” she said, teasing that she’s been in her “producer bag pretty deep.”
The singer-songwriter also said that she’s learning to relax a bit more after taking life so seriously following her rise to fame.
“I feel like the younger part of my years, I took life so seriously, and now I’m at a time when I really want to focus on my happiness while I work really hard towards my goals,” she said.
Chloe Talks Supporting Sister Halle

While fans are still waiting for another album with her sister, Halle, Chloe said that she will always be in her corner. Most recently, she was spotted at the premiere of Halle’s feature film, “You, Me, & Tuscany,” and said that she couldn’t be prouder of her younger sister and all of her success.
“Sis and I, we started doing everything together, so we’re each other’s safety blanket,” Chloe said, per The Blast. “I was so happy to be there at the screening in L.A. to support her for her incredible rom-com.”
According to Chloe, she has just as much fun cheering her sister on as she does working with her on new projects.
“… it just makes when we come together that much more special,” she said.

7 Most Universally Beloved Anime of All Time, Ranked
Just as nothing is perfect, there is nothing that doesn’t have its share of hate. But even in anime, one of the most toxic communities, exist relatively beloved series. Shows such as One Piece and Attack on Titan are universally praised for their creativity, story, originality, and entertainment value, but as some of the most popular anime series ever, they have an equal amount of hate that comes with their praise.
It seems that everything has its haters nowadays, especially when something gets popular, then the haters suddenly appear to spread their dislike. However, there are a handful of universally beloved anime series, and this list will rank the seven of them based on how little hate they get, how much love they get, creativity, writing, animation, consistency, critical acclaim, and overall quality. Of course, even these anime get some hate, but it is hard to come by when compared to the majority of shows. Note that this list will only contain popular anime series that are beloved, and will not include lesser-known shows.
It is only natural for some of the most popular anime series to have a lot of negativity tied to them, but one show that has best avoided that is Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Brothers Ed (Romi Park) and Al (Rie Kugimiya) lose parts or all of their bodies in a taboo experiment, which prompts them to search for the philosopher’s stone. However, when they uncover a government conspiracy, the duo must stop it before it consumes the entire world.
Out of all the anime listed here, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood does get some hate or claims of it being overrated, just because it is regarded by many as the greatest anime series of all time. Still, the massive amount of love proves that this anime has something for everyone, whether it be the action, story, comedy, drama, mystery, romance, worldbuilding, or well-written characters. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and for those who haven’t seen it, watching it will surely make them a fan.

‘Azumanga Daioh’ (2002)
Comedy in anime isn’t for everyone, which is why when a good one comes along, it is often remembered for decades and goes down in history as a staple of the community. Azumanga Daioh follows a group of high school girls and the daily shenanigans they get up to. However, when an elementary student is fast-tracked because of her genius, she joins this group and changes the dynamic instantly, getting along with this eccentric, yet opposite bunch of endearing characters.
In a community untouched by hate and a show that is so fun, goofy, and wholesome that nobody could dare say anything bad about it, one hater does exist: the creator. It is ironic that the only hater of Azumanga Daioh is the manga author, who did not appreciate or enjoy the anime adaptation one bit. Either way, this anime is still a beloved comedy classic that features an eccentric group of characters and the hijinks that they get up to. Azumanga Daioh is silly and nonsensical, but that is exactly why so many people adore it.

‘Haikyuu!’ (2014–Present)
Volleyball isn’t the most riveting sport out there, but if one show will change the minds of fans, it is Haikyuu! Hinata (Ayumu Murase) may be undersized, but he has big aspirations of becoming a star volleyball player at his new school. However, he instantly clashes with a prodigious rookie setter known for being stubborn. The only thing they share in common is their goal of being the best, and the two will have to work together if they want to make this former powerhouse school relive its glory days.
The sports genre is one of the best in anime, constantly delivering exhilarating action and tense drama for fans to fall in love with. Haikyuu is the ultimate underdog story, and the way it develops characters, shows their flaws, and highlights their dynamics with others is a spectacular aspect that fans can agree is what this show does perfectly. Haikyuu doesn’t just show volleyball; it teaches it, allowing fans to learn with the characters, which builds a stronger bond between anime and fandom.

‘Mob Psycho 100’ (2016–2022)
ONE is a prolific author best known for One Punch Man, but after its most recent season, it is definitely not beloved. However, his other work, Mob Psycho 100, is universally acclaimed. Shigeo (Setsuo Itō) is the world’s strongest psychic, but despite his overwhelming strength, he only wants to have an average high school life and win over his crush. But because he suppresses his emotions, his psychic powers explode when he is overwhelmed, making life difficult for him, his friends, and his enemies.
Finding someone who dislikes Mob Psycho 100 is difficult because even if they aren’t a fan, it is rare for anyone actually to hate this anime. Mob is such an endearing character with some of the best character development in anime. But he isn’t the only adored character, as the entire cast is brimming with personality, especially Reigen (Takahiro Sakurai), whom the anime fandom universally agrees is one of the best side characters. Mob Psycho 100 is a modern masterpiece that excels at everything it does: animation, characters, action, comedy, and story, making it a flawless and beloved classic.
3
‘Gintama’ (2006–2018)
It is difficult for a long-running battle shōnen to remain universally beloved because the longer it goes on, the more flaws and mistakes it opens itself up to. However, Gintama managed this perfectly and established itself as a legendary anime. Set in an alternate version of Japan where aliens took over, Gintoki (Tomokazu Sugita) is a former samurai who spends his days doing odd jobs with Kagura (Rie Kugimiya) and Shinpachi (Daisuke Sakaguchi). However, taking on these jobs puts them face-to-face with terrorists, the police, aliens, and space pirates on a daily basis.
Gintama has its fair share of flaws, including the slow opening that resulted in many viewers dropping it. However, this anime picks up in a big way, instantly becoming one of the funniest pieces of media fans will ever see. On one side, its style of referential, parody, satirical, and goofy humor creates a hilarious atmosphere, and on the other side, it is a gripping action series with political intrigue and grand fights. Gintama is a rare anime that achieves so much, cementing its legacy as a beloved classic that appeals to comedy, action, and story lovers.
2
‘Yu Yu Hakusho’ (1992–1995)
Yoshihiro Togashi is an influential manga author best known for Hunter x Hunter, a series that still hasn’t ended, constantly going back and forth between publishing and hiatus. While that show has some haters, his other work doesn’t: Yu Yu Hakusho. Yusuke (Nozomu Sasaki) is a street punk who uncharacteristically sacrifices himself to save a kid. The underworld doesn’t know what to do with him, and therefore gives him a second chance at life, now working as a spirit detective who must keep the balance between the human world and the supernatural.
If there is even a morsel of hate towards Yu Yu Hakusho, it comes from the atrocious ending that suddenly concluded the series, with fans missing over half of the fights. It is a terrible conclusion, but even that wasn’t enough to tarnish its name, with Yu Yu Hakusho being the most beloved long-running battle shōnen out there. Older fans love it because they grew up with it, and many toxic newer fans haven’t seen it yet, making it a perfect time capsule of the 1990s that is untouched by the haters of the community. Yu Yu Hakusho is a defining anime that has earned its reputation as a universally loved series.
1
‘Gurren Lagann’ (2007)
Every anime has its haters, but this list contains the few shows that are mostly exempt from this, especially Gurren Lagann. Simon (Tetsuya Kakihara) and Kamina (Katsuyuki Konishi) live in a subterranean village with dreams of one day going to the surface. This dream comes true when they discover an ancient mech that drills them into the light of day. However, their ambition doesn’t stop there, with the duo planning to pierce the heavens and create a lasting family in this world.
The anime community at large adores Gurren Lagann, with many going years before seeing anything negative about this masterpiece. Maybe haters are scared to display their dislike because they know so many people love it, but the likely scenario is that this anime is just universally beloved. Gurren Lagann is an easy binge-watch, portraying a highly entertaining story with high-octane action that has mechs throwing galaxies at each other. Any amount of praise underscoring Gurren Lagann‘s overall popularity and collective love is because that amount of positivity around this anime is unheard of. But this just proves that Gurren Lagann needs to be on everyone’s watch list, because it might just be their new favorite anime.

Ella Bleu’s Unusual Bond With John Travolta Raises Questions
Life as the daughter of a Hollywood icon comes with privileges most people can only imagine. Yet for Ella Bleu Travolta, the reality appears far more private than glamorous.
Despite growing up around some of the world’s biggest stars and pursuing careers in both acting and music, she remains largely out of the spotlight.
That unusual lifestyle has sparked ongoing questions about her close bond with her father, John Travolta, and the path she has chosen for herself.

Many celebrity children build public profiles long before adulthood, but Ella Bleu has taken a different route.
Although she has nearly three-quarters of a million Instagram followers, her social media presence is surprisingly limited. Rather than sharing details about her daily life, she mostly uses her accounts to promote acting projects, music releases, or partnerships with brands.
According to one insider who spoke to the Daily Mail, “For the most part Ella lives at home with her father and when she travels, she usually stays with friends or family.”
The source added, “She’s met a lot of people through John, but she only has a small circle of close friends. She’s a very private person.”
That low-profile lifestyle stands in contrast to that of many celebrity offspring, who frequently share their lives online. Another insider suggested there is a simple reason for that, explaining that “her friends aren’t famous.”
They added, “She’s friendly with some of John’s friends’ kids who have known her forever.”
While Ella Bleu may not seek constant attention, her quiet existence has fueled curiosity about why she remains so closely tied to her famous father.
Tragedy Strengthened Their Family Bond

The relationship between Ella and John Travolta appears to have deepened following devastating losses within their family.
In 2009, the actor and his late wife Kelly Preston lost their son Jett, who died at age 16 after suffering a seizure. More than a decade later, Preston died following a battle with breast cancer.
One insider believes those tragedies changed the father-daughter relationship forever.
“Losing Jett and Kelly brought John and Ella even closer,” the source said.
They continued, “Even though Ella’s in her mid-twenties, John is still her guiding light.”
Today, Ella continues to live with her father at his Florida property. Friends say the pair share a connection built on mutual support, loyalty, and years of navigating grief together.
That closeness has become one of the defining aspects of Ella’s public image, with many observers noting how often the two appear together at events and on social media.
Ella Bleu’s Connection To Scientology Draws Attention

Some of the questions surrounding Ella’s life stem from her family’s long association with Scientology.
Raised by parents who were both devoted members of the Church, Ella attended events connected to the religion while growing up.
Former Scientologist Joy Villa has publicly claimed that Ella Bleu may feel unable to leave because followers are “taught that if you leave, you’ll be disconnected” from the outside world.
Villa, who said she met Ella when she was young, described her as “very shy, sweet and introverted.”
Recalling those years, Villa said, “She and John were there at Flag every day… And at that time, Ella was very overweight.”
She added, “The reason was that her dad would feed her at night whatever she wanted.”
When Villa saw her years later, she described Ella as “gracious” and “very well mannered.”
Others dispute the idea that Scientology controls Ella’s life. One insider explained, “John and Ella are both followers of Scientology but they hardly ever discuss it publicly.”
The source added, “In fact, rarely with people outside the Church. Ella and John said it’s helped them through the very tough times they’ve both had to endure. They haven’t said much more.”
Journalist Tony Ortega also noticed her participation in Scientology events, saying, “That was the first time I had noticed that she was following in her dad’s footsteps and that she had been brought up in Scientology.”
Following John Travolta’s Footsteps On Screen

Questions about Ella’s independence have also emerged because much of her professional life has been connected to her father.
She made her acting debut in 2009’s “Old Dogs,” which starred Travolta. Years later, she appeared alongside him again in “The Poison Rose“ and has continued collaborating with him on various projects.
Discussing her growth as a performer, Travolta once described a project as a “chance also to introduce Ella in the light that I wanted the world to see her because I wanted it to be A Star Is Born, and it really was. It’s really evident now. People agree with me on Ella in this movie.”
Ortega also observed, “She’s following [Travolta’s] footsteps in Scientology and she’s following in his footsteps in acting. And certainly, you could expect that a guy like John Travolta would want that for his child.”
Upcoming projects continue that trend, with Ella once again set to share the screen with her father.
Ella Bleu Is Determined To Build Her Own Future

Despite concerns that she remains heavily influenced by her upbringing, those closest to Ella insist she is focused on creating her own identity.
One insider described John Travolta as deeply protective, saying, “John is one of the most protective fathers I’ve ever known.”
The source continued, “He’s had so many losses in his life that he holds on to Ella and Ben in a way I’ve never seen.”
They added, “It’s not like he smothers them. They’re just the center of his world. They have a bond that is something very special, beautiful and unusual.”
The affection clearly goes both ways. Speaking previously about her father, Ella said, “And I’m his biggest fan. So, there’s a lot of support going on.”
Her personal life remains largely private, although she revealed details about experiencing first love while writing music.
She said, “It was perhaps the first song I wrote in real time, when I was experiencing first love. It was something completely new, and I was thinking, ‘What’s happening to me? What are these new feelings?’”
Ella added, “I was also wondering if the other person felt the same way, what would happen in the future… I was composing it and falling in love at the same time. It’s one of my favorite songs because I poured so much of myself into it.”
Another insider said Ella hopes for lasting love but remains focused on work, explaining that “Love and dating can take a back seat for now.”
They also dismissed suggestions that Scientology controls her future, saying “it isn’t dictating her life and her career as some might assume.”
According to the source, “She is maturing through loss and the determination to get better as a person and to get better in a profession.”
They concluded, “She just has her head on straight, unlike a lot of celebs kids, she breaks the mold.”

Kanye West And Daughter Labeled ‘Twins’ Over Masked-Up Photo
Kanye West‘s daughter, North West, recently paid tribute to the rapper with a series of nostalgic Father’s Day posts, offering fans a rare glimpse into their relationship.
The duo looked strikingly similar in their coordinating looks that it had fans online branding them “twins” for their style and facial resemblance.
The heartfelt tribute came just days after Kim Kardashian celebrated North West’s birthday and as the teenager continues making strides in the music industry.
North West Marks Father’s Day With Throwback Photos Of Kanye West

North gave her father, Kanye, a heartfelt Father’s Day shoutout by sharing a pair of nostalgic photos on social media.
The 13-year-old posted two throwback images to her Instagram Stories on June 21, offering fans a rare glimpse into moments she shared with the rapper.
In one photo, North stood beside Kanye wearing a black face covering and a protective-style vest branded with “Donda,” mirroring the look her father famously adopted during the promotional rollout for his 2021 album of the same name. She simply captioned the image, “Happy Father’s Day.”
A second photo captured an even earlier memory, showing North by her father’s side while he worked on preparations for one of his fashion shows. Both posts were accompanied by music from Kanye’s catalog, including “Wolves” and “Say You Will.”
The Images Of The Father And Daughter Had Fans Branding Them ‘Twins’

North’s sweet father’s day photos made their way to X, prompting fans of Kanye to gush over how he and his daughter share a similar style and vibe.
“Like father, like daughter,” one fan wrote, while another noted, “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.”
A third individual commented, “She’s his twin fr” along with a series of red heart emojis.
Other X users were more interested in Kanye and North’s outfits in the photos, with a person writing that they were dressed like that and were starring in an action movie.
Another simply branded the father and daughter’s masked-up photo, “Tough as hell.”
Although North does not often post about her father, she and Kanye made headlines earlier this year when they appeared together on stage in Mexico City.
During the performance, Kanye invited his daughter to join him for an unreleased song, delighting concertgoers.
North West Receives Sweet Birthday Message From Kim Kardashian

North is the eldest of the four children shared by Kanye and Kim, who ended their marriage in 2022 after eight years together. The former couple is also parents to Saint, Chicago, and Psalm.
North’s Father’s Day tribute came just days after Kim celebrated North’s 13th birthday with an emotional message on Instagram.
Sharing photos from throughout her daughter’s life, the SKIMS founder reflected on how quickly North was growing up.
“Happy Birthday, my Northiiiiiieeeeeeeee (Uzi voice!!!),” Kim wrote. “There’s no one like you, my baby girl! I love being your mom and watching you grow. I love you to the alien galaxies you would speak of as a kid and beyond.”
The Teen Star Gears Up For A Multi-City Summer Tour
As North enters her teenage years, she is also continuing to carve out her own path in the music industry.
The 13-year-old daughter revealed that she will be hitting the road this summer alongside rapper Molly Santana for the Molly X North Kimokawaii Tour. The announcement was shared through a collaborative Instagram post on June 17.
The tour is set to visit multiple cities across North America, including New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Toronto. It will kick off in Dallas on August 5 before wrapping up in Los Angeles on August 27. Fans will be able to purchase tickets beginning June 19.
North and Santana have already shared the stage before, performing an unreleased track together during Rolling Loud in Orlando, Florida.
Kim Kardashian Celebrates North West’s Passion For Music

Music has become an increasingly important focus for North this year. In February, she reportedly signed with independent music company Gamma.
She has since released several projects, including the single “Piercing on My Hand,” which featured lyrics about school, piercings, and self-expression.
In May, she followed up with her debut EP, “N0rth4evr,” and continued her momentum in June with the release of “Mula tha Root of All Evil,” a collaboration with rapper Lil Novi.
The young performer also reached another milestone this month when she delivered her first solo festival appearance at Lyrical Lemonade’s Summer Smash in Illinois.
Kim has publicly embraced her daughter’s creative pursuits. Speaking on Khloé Kardashian’s podcast earlier this year, the reality star shared that North does “an eight-hour music studio session where she’s producing and writing.”
According to Kim, seeing her daughter discover a passion at such a young age is something she greatly admires and hopes her other children will experience as well.

Macaulay Culkin Moves Fans With Father’s Day Post: ‘So Sweet’
Macaulay Culkin left fans emotional with a heartfelt message he shared to celebrate Father’s Day.
The actor, who shares two sons, Dakota and Carson, with partner Brenda Song, reflected on the joys and responsibilities of raising his children, offering a candid look into his own journey as a father.
The post drew widespread praise from fans, many of whom noted that despite his difficult relationship with his father, Culkin has worked to become the kind of parent he always wanted for his children.
Macaulay Culkin has been a father since 2021, and it appears to be a role he is truly thriving in, despite his turbulent childhood.
In a recent Instagram post marking Father’s Day, the former child star reflected on his journey into fatherhood, drawing emotional reactions from fans.
“Seeing men with shit dads turn around and be amazing fathers is such a beautiful thing,” one user wrote.
“It must be so scary to do something so profound without any idea how to do it,” a second netizen commented, while a third said, “So proud of him for breaking the cycle of abuse, tbh.”
“You can tell how much he wants to be a father and husband, it’s so sweet,” one more remarked about the “Home Alone” franchise star.
Culkin Opens Up About Life As A Father
Culkin marked Father’s Day with a post showing him in a tuxedo, looking over his children’s train set.
He also added a heartfelt caption, noting that fatherhood requires consistency and commitment, even on days when a parent does not feel fully energized to show up.
“Being a papa can be hard. It’s everything; it’s cleaning faces, wiping noses, wiping butts, hour-long baths that just won’t quit, cooking ten dinners no one will eat, and answering all the questions in the world. It’s giving it a 10 when all you have is a 1 in the tank. I’m not perfect. I’m just a papa,” the actor wrote.
He continued: “Doesn’t matter. It all makes sense when my boys build me a bear. Thank you, fellas. I’ll cherish Buzz LightBear forever.”
Wrapping up the post, Culkin thanked his partner, Brenda Song, saying, “I wouldn’t be a father without you.”
How Fatherhood Changed Father’s Day For Macaulay Culkin

Posting on Father’s Day has become a trend for Culkin in recent years since becoming a father.
However, in his 2024 post, he confessed to having a complicated relationship with the celebration in the past before deciding to “reinvent the wheel” for his two sons.
“Other than getting an hour or two of extra sleep, I try to make the day a celebration of my boys more than me,” Culkin said. “After all, they are the ones who made me a father (no offense to Brenda).”
“I try to do fun things for the boys on Father’s Day. It’s a special day,” he continued, before adding, “Father’s Day isn’t for me, it’s for the people that make me feel like a father.”
The ‘Home Alone’ Star Previously Opened Up About His Painful Childhood

Culkin’s father managed his career when he broke into the acting scene as a child star in the 1990s. However, the pair did not have a good relationship, as Culkin has said on several occasions.
During an appearance on WTF with Marc Maron ” in 2018, he accused his father, Christopher “Kit” Culkin, of being physically and mentally abusive during his childhood. He also said his father was resentful of his success as a child actor.
On another occasion, Culkin claimed his father was not transparent about the income he earned as an actor. Eventually, he took steps to remove his parents from his trust fund in order to regain control of his finances.
Macaulay Culkin Says He Has Not Spoken To His Father In Decades

In the years following his difficult childhood, Culkin has largely distanced himself from his father.
In March last year, he revealed that there had been no verbal communication between them for decades after he broke contact in the 1990s.
“I haven’t spoken to him in, what would it be, about 30-something years?” Macaulay told Hudson and Oliver Hudson’s “Sibling Revelry” podcast at the time, per People Magazine.
The actor continued: “He deserves it, too. He’s a man who — he has seven kids, and now he has four grandkids, and none of them want anything to do with him.”

Latto & Her Sister Spend Time With Dad
The video of Shayne Stephens with his daughters shows him holding two Louis Vuitton bags as he walks near an outdoor plaza. He had on a yellow polo shirt and jeans. Meanwhile, Latto and Brooklyn trailed behind him. Nikole had on a hot pink tracksuit, while the ‘Big Mama’ rapper rocked red sweats and a black jacket. Both sisters had their hair styled in long ponytails. A caption on one of the recap posts said, “Daddy’s Girl at [red heart emoticon].” The car itself was a matte-black Ram TRX with a giant red bow on top.
Social Media Reacts To The Sisters’ Father’s Day Surprise

@alexislovesme commented, “This is dope! Love the color too! 🩶🩶🩶.”
Latto & Her Dad Previously Had Tension
As suggested by some of the roommates’ reactions, Latto and Shayne Stephens weren’t always on good terms. She was introduced into the industry as a father-daughter management duo. Then, in 2024, she accused her dad of stealing from her. At the time, she shared the comment on Instagram Story after reportedly reposting a video of a father and her pilot dad. She captioned the repost, “Awww. My dad steals from me and tells everyone I’m in the Illuminati.” The year before, in 2023, she told XXL that she felt regrets over mixing business and family.
“…Mixing family and business, that’s, like, one of my biggest regrets. I was introduced to everyone with my dad as my manager, and now we don’t even speak, so it’s like, I hate that,” Latto reportedly said.
It’s unclear when the daughter and father resolved their differences. However, he was present at her cheetah-inspired baby shower and even shared footage from the event that went viral.

Will Arnett Shuts Down ‘Bathroom’ Question About His Ex-Wife
Will Arnett just drew a hard line on his own podcast.
The comedian shut down a question from his co-host, Jason Bateman, about his marriage so fast that he warned his ex-wife would be furious about it.
Will Arnett and Amy Poehler have built one of Hollywood’s most talked-about co-parenting relationships since their divorce in 2016. This latest moment proved there are still limits to what he is willing to share.

Arnett snapped at his “SmartLess” co-host Bateman after he asked an unusually personal question about his marriage to Poehler during Monday’s episode. “Will, did you ever poo in front of Amy?” Bateman asked.
“Are you looking for clicks? Are you trying to get something that we can click around?” Arnett shot back. Bateman pressed further, asking if the couple truly never used the bathroom in front of each other during their marriage.
“I refuse to answer that. It’s none of your f-cking business,” Arnett said firmly. He then warned his co-hosts that Poehler herself would be “outraged” once she heard the exchange.
Arnett Insists His Ex-Wife Is Off Limits To Jason Bateman

As the back-and-forth continued, Bateman accused Arnett of having no manners for refusing to engage with the question.
“I’m sorry. The question is, did I poo in front of Amy? And you’re saying that I don’t have manners? What are you talking about?” Arnett replied. However, Bateman insisted he believed it “was a good question.”
Arnett disagreed entirely, repeating that the subject was off-limits no matter how the question was framed. The exchange quickly became one of the more talked-about moments from the episode.
Will Arnett And Amy Poehler’s Marriage Spanned Nearly A Decade

Their playful spat is the latest chapter in a relationship that has spanned more than two decades. PEOPLE reported that Arnett first crossed paths with Poehler in 1996 while she was performing with the Upright Citizens Brigade in New York City.
The pair married in 2003 and went on to welcome two sons, Archie in 2008 and Abel in 2010. They also shared the screen in projects like “Blades of Glory” and “Arrested Development.”
After nine years of marriage, the couple separated in 2012. Arnett officially filed for divorce in 2014, and the split was finalized in 2016, with the former couple agreeing to share joint custody of their two sons. Friends often described them as one of comedy’s most beloved couples.
The Actor Once Called His Divorce From Amy Poehler ‘Brutal’

Arnett has previously opened up about how painful the divorce truly was. He told The Guardian that returning to film “Arrested Development” during the split felt “brutal.” In his words:
“Just brutal, brutal, brutal. I was driving to the set one day, and I pulled over to the side of the road and cried for an hour.”
He also recalled feeling frustrated by online commentary that took sides in the breakup, saying, “People talk about you like they know you, and they talk about your relationship as if they know what’s going on.”
Despite the pain of those early years, Arnett said the bond he and Poehler built as co-parents only grew stronger with time. “My kids are so lucky that Amy is their mother,” he said.
Will Arnett Has Also Navigated A Major Breakup Recently

Arnett’s personal life has seen its share of change beyond his marriage to Poehler. The Blast reported that he quietly split from his girlfriend of six years, Alessandra Brawn, with the two now co-parenting their son amicably.
The couple, who share five-year-old son Denny, were first linked publicly in 2019 after attending the Creative Arts Emmys together. They had kept much of their relationship out of the spotlight throughout their time together.
Sources described the breakup as low-key, with both Arnett and Brawn choosing to prioritize their son’s stability over any public statements regarding the split. Despite years of public curiosity, both he and Poehler have made clear their bond works precisely because they refuse to explain it to anyone.
With Jason Bateman clearly unbothered by the boundaries Will Arnett tried to set, can anyone really expect this co-host trio ever to stop pushing for more details?
