Keanu Reeves is mostly known for taking on lead roles in science fiction and action epics, but you may not know that he played a supporting role in 2016’s The Neon Demon, starring Elle Fanning. This psychological horror film can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video and is not for the faint of heart.

Though the reviews for The Neon Demon were polarizing, fans of director Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive, Only God Forgives) have praised the film for its style, execution, and stark criticism of the fashion industry.

A Warning About The World Of Beauty

The Neon Demon is a cautionary tale about the cut-throat nature of the runway world, and puts Elle Fanning’s Jesse in the middle of a tumultuous relationship with her peers and the modeling agency she finds herself working for. Jessie is known for her natural beauty, but her rise to prominence is overshadowed by older models who are jealous of her beauty.

After an altercation at a casting call with an older model named Sarah, who cuts Jesse’s hand and sucks on her blood, Jess spirals into vivid hallucinations and succumbs to her underlying narcissistic personality.

During one such hallucination, Keanu Reeves’ Hank character, who owns the motel where she’s staying, forces her to sexually swallow a knife. Upon waking up from her nightmarish vision, she realizes that somebody is actually breaking into the neighboring room, which sets off a chain of events that eventually leads to her seeking safety at her makeup artist Ruby’s home.

The Neon Demon continues to churn your stomach when Ruby, whose advances were turned down by Jesse, ends up enjoying herself with a corpse at a night job as a morgue cosmetologist.

Sinister Below The Surface

The Neon Demon places a strong emphasis on the conniving nature of its subjects, who live in a world that’s superficial on the surface but sinister beneath its outermost layer of skin. We witness a form of storytelling that’s visually disturbing, but so visceral in its delivery that we can’t help but look away. If you think about what’s trying to be accomplished, it makes sense that bloodsucking and backstabbing go hand in hand with the highly competitive nature of the fashion industry that’s being illustrated in this film.

Some films are meant to be watched for their storytelling, but The Neon Demon has been referred to as a thrilling visual experience rather than a traditional movie. A story is clearly being told, but the way it’s delivered doesn’t follow traditional filmmaking conventions. For this very reason, The Neon Demon‘s reception is all over the place; your enjoyment of this film will likely fall into “all or nothing” territory.

Critical And Audience Reaction To The Neon Demon

Commercially, The Neon Demon did not fare well, grossing only $3.4 million against a reported budget of $7 million. On the critical front, the film currently has a 59 percent critical score, compared with an audience score of 51 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. But when you look at the reviews, it’s clear there is a very specific audience in mind for The Neon Demon, which explains why they’re so polarizing.

Writer Natasha Stagg speculated that The Neon Demon suffered at the box office because its subject matter was too close to home for its demographic. In other words, if an aspiring model watched this film, they might have a negative reaction because it highlights a heightened version of a toxic work environment that may not ring true in the real world, yet still exposes the dark side of a particular industry.

The film’s positive reviews tell an entirely different story. Critics described The Neon Demon as a “hypnotic fever dream” full of hidden messages, moments of genius, and madness. Among those reviews, many critics have stated that The Neon Demon is Refn’s best movie and worthy of your consideration.

If you take The Neon Demon at face value, you might not be ready to explore the sinister underbelly of the fashion industry that’s being illustrated by its storytelling. But if you’re willing to immerse yourself in the world Refn created, you’ll witness an exercise in experimental filmmaking that may have flown under your radar upon its initial release.

Shakira has been embroiled in an eight-year legal battle after Spanish authorities accused her of tax fraud in 2018. Now, the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer has been acquitted and is owed a massive reimbursement from the government. However, in the meantime, she remains in legal limbo.

According to Variety, Spain’s high court acquitted Skakira of tax fraud in May 2026. Following the investigation, the court ordered the country’s treasury to issue a refund of almost $65 million to the 49-year-old, including interest. This came as the court ruled that the funds had been improperly collected from the singer.

Regarding the acquittal, the court found that the government agency failed to prove that Shakira spent 183 days in the country in 2011. Had this been the case, she would have been deemed a resident and required to pay personal income tax. However, she instead spent only 163 days in Spain that financial year.

For the time being, Shakira remains in limbo as the nation’s tax agency has vowed to appeal to the Spanish Supreme Court. Additionally, they will not remit funds to the icon until the final ruling is issued.

Shakira Issued A Statement Following Tax Fraud Acquittal

Following the news of her acquittal, Shakira issued a statement, calling the eight-year court battle “brutal” and accusing the investigation of being an attempt to harm her reputation.

She said, “After more than eight years of enduring brutal public targeting, orchestrated campaigns to destroy my reputation, and sleepless nights that ultimately impacted my health and my family’s well-being, the National High Court has finally set the record straight.”

After that, she noted that the accusation of “fraud” was false and that “the Administration itself could never prove otherwise, simply because it wasn’t true.”

From there, she detailed the grooling process, saying, “Yet, for nearly a decade, I was treated as guilty. Every step of the process was leaked, distorted, and amplified, using my name and public image to send a threatening message to the rest of the taxpayers.”

Shakira then said the “narrative crumbles” regarding her legal victory. In the end, she dedicated her win to “ordinary citizens who are abused and crushed every day by a system that presumes their guilt and forces them to prove their innocence at the cost of economic and emotional ruin.”

Fans Are Rallying Around Shakira

Shakira’s legal victory is being celebrated online, especially for her mention of “ordinary citizens” accused of similar financial crimes. One person on X said, “I’m not sure how Shakira could be guilty of anything other than being one of the most beautiful women on earth. In all seriousness, I’m glad this legal nightmare is over.”

Someone else said, “That’s a big win for her. I hope the news of her acquittal is as loud as the news of her charges were.” A different person wrote, “The Spanish tax authorities always seem to be fishing in troubled waters. They’ll take the money from anyone who’s not careful. The same thing happened with James Rodríguez.”

After that, a different X user reacted to Shakira’s reimbursement. According to them, “Wait, $64 million returned? That’s a plot twist even her greatest hits didn’t see coming… good for her.”

The Singer Previously Settled

In addition to being accused of failing to pay taxes for 2011, the Spanish court found that the singer committed the same offense from 2012 to 2014. However, in lieu of a trial, she reached a settlement in November 2023, according to the BBC. Per the agreement, she paid $7 million after being accused of owing $15 million.

She explained her decision to settle in 2024 in a letter published in “El Mundo.” She explained that she did so to protect her children, stating, “I want to leave my children the legacy of a woman who explained her reasons calmly and in her own time, when she considered it necessary, not when she was forced to.”

Shakira added, “I need them to know that I made the decisions I made to protect them, to be by their side, and to get on with my life. Not out of cowardice or guilt.”

The Icon Recently Performed For 2 Million People

Shakira became the latest artist to headline Copacabana on May 2. According to Reuters, the iconic singer also became the newest performer to draw a 2 million-person audience, following Lady Gaga in 2025.

She addressed the crowd, saying, “Brazil, I love you. It’s ‌magical ⁠to see millions of souls together, ready to sing, feel, dance, and remind the world of what really matters.” Shakira performed hits such as “Hips Don’t Lie,” “Antologia,” and “Waka Waka.”

Additionally, according to Billboard, the music legend will perform during the halftime at the 2026 World Cup. Madonna and BTS will also take the stage.

Breezy & Son Aeko Celebrate Ammika Harris’ 33rd Birthday

As mentioned, a video that appears to have been recorded by a guest at Ammika Harri’s birthday event is circulating online. The part that’s gagging folks is Chris Brown’s presence. From what the public knows, Harris and Breezy are strictly co-parents six years after welcoming her first child, and his second child, but first son. The short clip shows Chris, dressed in a white shirt and yellow jacket, standing behind Aeko and speaking briefly into the child’s ear. Meanwhile, Ammika was all smiles during the birthday song. The 33rd was glowing in a bright yellow mini dress. Her official birth date is May 16.

Ammika also shared a birthday recap on her Instagram page on Sunday (May 17), but did not include any photos of Chris Brown. Instead, she gave a glimpse of her luxury gifts, such as Dior items, still in their bags. She also posted a close-up of her beautiful, white-frosted cake, decorated with pink florals and pink candles. Unlike his dad, Aeko was pictured at least twice in the 14-picture post. From photos, it appears at least 14 women attended the birthday meal.

In The Shade Room’s comment section, nearly 2,000 reactions poured over every detail, from Chris Brown being there to her physical looks compared to his other co-parents. One name that popped up was Jada Wallace, who announced the birth of her and Chris Brown’s son in April. Another mention? Karrueche Tran, who celebrated her 38th birthday on May 17. Diamond Brown is also being name-dropped amid her paternity suit against him.

Wallace has not yet said anything about Chris attending Ammika Harris’ birthday celebration. About two hours before Ammika shared her recap, Jada posted new photos of herself on her IG feed. When you love anime, one of the hardest things is sharing your passion with other people. Sure, you can hop online to dish about your favorite shows with fellow fans, but it can be hard to get the normies in your life (friends or family) to give an animated show a chance. Because of this, I often try to compare my favorite shows to their favorite movies; “if you liked X, you’ll love Y,” and so on. It’s an effective strategy, and it helped me get a couple of friends to check out a killer show once I compared it to their favorite film.

2023’s Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead is more or less perfect for anyone who loved Zombieland. Like that film, the show follows a young man whose life was disrupted by a zombie apocalypse, but he tries to have fun and make the most of this brave new world. In this case, anime protagonist Akira has a titular bucket list of things he’d like to do before he dies, and thanks to the zombies, he no longer works at his dead-end job. That’s right, kids: in addition to appealing to Zombieland fans, Zom 100 (now streaming on Netflix) is perfect for anyone who’d rather be eaten than clock in on Monday.

The First Day Of The Rest Of Your Life

The premise of Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead will most certainly resonate with fans of Gen X movies like Fight Club and Office Space. Like the protagonists in those films, young Akira Tendo works at a dead-end job that he hates, and he worries that the rest of his life will be nothing but bleak 9-5 days working for people he despises. When a zombie apocalypse hits Tokyo, he decides to start working on his bucket list before he joins the walking dead. Linking up with several unexpected allies, he embarks on a bizarre quest to get the most out of life while everything around him is falling apart.

For me, the plot of Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead is great because it mashes together two insanely different genres: the tired “zombie invasion” genre and the wired “workplace satire” genre. We’ve had countless movies and shows where characters are left without a purpose once the dead start coming back to life, and we’ve had countless movies and shows where characters are left without a purpose once they attain a stable-but-soul-crushing job. To the best of my knowledge, though, Zom 100 is the only media where a character hates his job so much that he welcomes a zombie uprising as a chance to finally enjoy life. 

I Was Born A Shambling Man

Trust me: if you’ve ever had a job so bad that you’d rather die than work another day, you’ll vibe with Akira. Plus, his particular strain of optimism is weirdly infectious, and it contributes to the delightfully bizarre tone of the show. Instead of leaning into dreary survivalism a la The Walking Dead or stark horror a la Dawn of the Dead, Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead leans into hopeful characters and weird comedy. This is basically a “wacky road trip with the boys” style show that just happens to take place during an undead apocalypse. 

The relentless optimism and weirdly effervescent joy of the show also influence the aesthetics of the show. You know how most zombie shows and films portray the world as a grey blur of dystopian decay? In Zom 100, the characters and setting are surprisingly colorful, with neon colors as bright as Akira’s optimism. There are scares and violence, of course, but even fight scenes are colorful and stylized (especially once blood starts spraying). This, along with the big personalities of Akira’s crew (wannabe comedian Kencho is particularly hilarious), makes this the prettiest and downright happiest show about the end of the world.

The End Of The World Has Never Been So Pretty

For all of its humor and wacky cheer, Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead also brings moments of painful and poignant sincerity. Personally, I thought these moments hit that much harder because they were (especially after the show’s more saccharine shenanigans) so unexpected. It’s a difficult trick to pull off, but Zom 100 finds the perfect sticky/sweet balance, especially when Akira and other characters get philosophical about what they want from life. After watching these characters find purpose and embrace joy amid all the chaos, you might start wondering who’s the real zombie the next time you clock in, convinced that a paycheck equals a purpose.

Obviously, Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead isn’t a perfect anime. Sometimes, the tonal shifts between laugh-out-loud comedy and cry-along drama are a bit sudden, and because of this and other factors, the pacing is sometimes off. On balance, though, it delivers a remarkably high ratio of great episodes to bad episodes. Plus, there are only 12 episodes, so you can knock this show out over the weekend. That’s great if you’re someone who is intimidated by shows with an endless amount of episodes (looking at you, One Piece!). Short, sweet, and utterly hilarious, Zom 100 is definitely worth your time.

The End Of The World Will Be Televised

It’s an open secret that the zombie genre is usually just as tired and rotten as its decaying villains. But every now and then, a new movie or show comes along that (ironically enough) breathes new life into this shambling genre. Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead, like Zombieland before it, is filled with colorful characters who refuse to let the end of civilization keep them from having a good time. If you want to have a good time, you don’t have to break out your own bucket list: all you have to do is grab the remote and watch the quirkiest undead anime ever made, now streaming on Netflix.

Keith Urban Faces ‘Ultimate Disrespect’ Amid Tension With Daughters

Recently, Urban reportedly struggled with what insiders called the “ultimate disrespect.” 

According to The Blast, sources claimed the icon was deeply hurt after Nicole Kidman attended the 2026 Met Gala with their daughter, Sunday Rose, in what insiders described as a public display of loyalty toward her mother.

Anderson Cooper is officially off the clock.

The journalist signed off his final episode of the CBS news program 60 Minutes on Sunday, May 17, after nearly 20 years as a correspondent.

As he parted from the long-running series, Cooper, 58, expressed his hope that 60 Minutes “remains 60 Minutes.”

“There’s very few things that have been around for as long as 60 Minutes has and [have been able to] maintain the quality that it has,” Cooper said. “Things can always evolve and change, and I think that’s awesome, and things should evolve and change, but I hope the core of what 60 Minutes is always remains. I think the independence of 60 Minutes has been critical.”

“I think the trust it has with viewers is critical to the success of 60 Minutes. When you see a 60 Minutes story, and you’re like, ‘That was a really good story,’ it was a good story because it requires time, it requires patience, it requires money,” he added. “I hope that’s known and honored and valued and continues.”

Cooper joined 60 Minutes during the 2006-2007 television season. He has juggled his correspondent role with his position as an anchor at CNN.

“The whole time I’ve done pieces on 60 Minutes, my full-time job has been over at CNN, and still is,” he said. “It’s been really challenging to do the kind of work you need to do to have a great 60 Minutes piece on. CNN doesn’t like it if I take a lot of time off to work on a 60 Minutes piece, so I’ve worked mostly for 60 Minutes on weekends. My vacation time at CNN has been working on 60 Minutes pieces. I’ve loved it, but it’s been tough.”

Cooper first announced his exit from the CBS program in February.
