How to Buy a Sectional Couch You Won’t Regret
The most common furniture mistake people make isn’t choosing the wrong style, rather it’s choosing the wrong size.
This usually comes after the purchase has been made.
A sectional that’s too large for a room becomes the room. It redirects traffic, shrinks walkways, and crowds out every other piece of furniture that was supposed to live alongside it. Getting a sectional right requires a different kind of planning than almost any other furniture purchase — don’t skip the steps necessary during this planning process so you’re not overcrowded and pushed out of your own living room, a place that’s supposed to be comforting, not stressful.
Measure the Room Before You Fall in Love With a Piece
Here’s the most direct advice for anyone looking to purchase a sectional: measure first, browse second.
Interior designers consistently recommend leaving a minimum of 30 to 36 inches of clearance around major walkways, and at least 18 inches between a sectional and a coffee table for comfortable legroom and traffic flow. These are functional minimums, not just recommendations. A room that falls below them starts to feel crowded regardless of how beautiful the furniture is, defeating the purpose of the living room.
The tape-on-the-floor trick is worth the extra ten minutes. Mark out the full footprint of the sectional you’re considering — including the depth of a chaise if there is one — before you buy anything. A standard sectional runs between 95 and 115 inches wide; larger configurations can reach 120 to 150 inches or more.
Living with that outline for a day or two tells you more than any showroom visit will. Showrooms are designed to make furniture look smaller. Your living room is not a showroom.
Understand What Shape Your Room Actually Needs
Sectionals come in three primary configurations, and the right one isn’t always the one you find most visually appealing.
L-shaped is the most versatile, tucking naturally into a corner, works in both small and large rooms, leaving more open floor space than the alternatives. For most living rooms — particularly those with a single focal point like a TV or fireplace — an L-shaped configuration is the starting point worth working from.
U-shaped provides maximum seating but demands significantly more space. It creates a natural conversational enclosure, which makes it excellent for households that entertain or for large, open family rooms — but U-shaped sectionals can run 108 to 156 inches in either direction, meaning a room needs to accommodate not just the footprint but the clearance on all sides.
Modular configurations offer the most flexibility over time. Individual pieces can be rearranged to fit different layouts, reconfigured as the room evolves, or separated entirely if you move. For anyone who anticipates change — a growing family, a different home in a few years, a living room that doubles as a workspace — modular sofas are worth the price tag.
How Sectionals Solve the Open Floor Problem
Architectural Digest and other leading design publications have been noting a shift toward “hybrid spaces” that serve multiple functions within a single open floor plan — the kitchen-dining-living combination that defines so many modern homes. In these layouts, furniture has to do work that walls once did: creating zones, defining where one room ends and another begins, providing visual anchors in large, undivided spaces.
A sectional couch is one of the most effective tools for the open floor plan home. Positioned with intention, an L or U-shaped sectional creates a living zone within an open plan without requiring a physical partition. The back of the sectional becomes a natural room divider. The interior of the configuration faces the seating area, drawing people in rather than pushing them out. In spaces where nothing else gives the room a sense of boundary, the sectional just that.
And believe it or not, having no boundaries can create a kind of tension and stress that you’re not expecting. Creating natural walkways and paths in your home takes the guessing out of you and your guests.
Why Material Matters as Much as Configuration
The upholstery of a sectional will determine whether that investment holds for three years or thirteen. The strongest case for longevity? Full-grain leather.
The topmost, uncorrected layer of a hide contains the densest natural fibers — the ones that resist surface wear across years of daily use, household traffic, and the general pressure a sectional bears simply by being the most-used piece of furniture in the room. Unlike performance textiles or microfiber, which show wear patterns and begin to pill over time, full-grain leather develops a patina — a natural deepening of color and character that makes the piece more interesting the longer you own it.
For homes with children or pets, semi-aniline leather adds a subtle protective topcoat over the same full-grain base, making it significantly more resistant to everyday wear while retaining the look and feel that makes leather worth choosing in the first place. The difference in maintenance between the two is meaningful; the difference in quality between either grade and synthetic alternatives is more meaningful still.
The One Step Most Buyers Skip
Order swatches before you commit to a color. Leather reads dramatically differently on a screen than it does in real light — and it reads differently under your specific home’s lighting than it does under anyone else’s. A cognac tan that appears warm and rich on a monitor can look orange under certain bulbs. A deep chocolate brown can look nearly black in a north-facing room.
Most quality retailers offer swatches for exactly this reason. Taking the time to see a material in your actual space, under your actual lighting conditions, before placing an order for a piece this large is one of the few pre-purchase steps that consistently prevents regret.

[$16] Coffee Break: Size Up Volumizing Mascara

I’ve been wearing black mascara daily for years and years. I don’t remember why I bought this bright blue one from Sephora, but it’s so fun I wore it to Pride this year. (The mascara also comes in black and brown.) It got slightly wet in the huge storm that led to the festival closing early, and it didn’t run, AND I know it has staying power, because the next morning (I don’t take off my mascara at night — bad Kate!) my lashes were still quite blue.
While this mascara doesn’t lengthen as well as my longtime drugstore favorite (granted, this one’s name includes “Volumizing” and not “Lengthening”), it thickens lashes well with its beautiful, bright shade of blue (similar to the tube color, in fact) and really stands out.
Sephora’s Size Up Volumizing Mascara is also available in standard brown and black, in case you’re looking for something more office-appropriate, as well as this cobalt blue for $16. The mini size is $9.
(Blue mascaras have been trending lately – you can find pricier versions from reader favorites like Diorshow and Chanel (Chanel is probaby the most subtle of the bunch).
Readers, what’s your “probably not for work” makeup item? Blue mascara? Gold eyeliner? Do tell…

Dressed in Gemstone Shades – Julia Berolzheimer
Outfit Details: Fforme Dress, Valentino Belt, Sherman Field Necklace, Jenna Blake Necklace (similar here), Miu Miu Flats (similar here)
There’s something so special about the way a gemstone comes to life depending on what it’s paired with. An emerald warmed by gold, a citrine brightened against a deeper, richer shade, a fleck of amethyst made all the more purple next to a dress in the same family. The color of a stone can shift so much when it meets a certain texture, the way satin can deepen green aventurine or lend it a little more fluidity. And a dress in a single jewel tone plays up the stones in a necklace, every shade catching against the next, the outfit as rich and deliberate as the stones that inspired it.

Splurge Monday’s Workwear Report: Below-Knee Dropped-Back Pleated Skirt

Our daily workwear reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

I’ve always loved Thom Browne’s slightly quirky, collegiate style. This skirt is a slightly more avant-garde version of my high school field hockey kilt, but I think it might work for the office if it were styled very conservatively.
I would pair this with a turtleneck, tights, and loafers for a slightly cooler version of a school uniform.
The skirt is $1,590 at Bloomingdale’s and comes in sizes 2-10.

I Tried the Best HD Lace Wigs: Here is the Most Seamless One

If you have found yourself spending an entire Sunday perfecting a wig just to hear someone say, “Is that a wig?” Monday morning, then you’re my type of person.
For years, I’ve been trying various wigs. However, the only thing I can say I do not miss is all the preparation that had to be done before putting them on my head. My process was always the same: bleaching the knots, plucking the hairline, dyeing the lace, trimming it to perfection, styling the baby hairs, gluing it all down, hoping that I didn’t go too far.
On a good day, the outcome was incredible.
But on a bad day, I would spend two hours preparing, and at the end, I’d have a hairline that showed in natural light.
I wanted a hairline that was real-looking but didn’t require DIY skills every time I installed it. This is when I began experimenting with HD lace wigs labeled “wear-and-go.”
At first, I was very skeptical.
The beauty industry is well-known for using terms such as “pre-plucked,” “ready-to-wear,” and “invisible lace,” but not all wigs live up to the hype. Some required quite some alterations before I could confidently step outside my house.
But then I came across two that completely changed my mind.
My Biggest Frustration Wasn’t the Wig, It Was the Prep
Individuals who don’t wear wigs often think getting a wig to blend with their head is a five-minute process.
I wish.
Bleaching knots requires skill. Put the bleach on for too long, and you end up ruining your hair. And if you don’t keep it long enough, the knots will still remain dark and noticeable.
After doing this many times to count, I came to realize that I was no longer enjoying this process. Instead, I wanted a wig that would suit me without making another weekend project.
What should be in my mind before buying a wig?
Before purchasing a new wig, I created a list of things my next wig would need.
It had to include:
● Realistic pre-plucked hairline
● Small knots that don’t require bleaching
● Light HD lace
● Secure glueless cap
● Best fit for everyday wear
● Good natural movements and not too thick
The HD Lace Wig That Finally Delivered
However, after trying different brands, I have finally discovered a line of WowAngel’s HD lace wigs which met all expectations and actually offered a real “wear and go” experience.
Rather than wasting an hour bleaching the knots and picking the hairline, I managed to just put the wig on and leave home after adjusting the elastic band, having a very natural-looking hairline.
This lace itself was very delicate and virtually disappeared when pressed up against my skin. I did not need any additional layering or makeup to help it match. The knots themselves were very tiny, thus not drawing attention at first glance.
The most important part was the hairline, which did not look unnaturally straight, as happens with most wigs.
It felt soft.
It was almost like real hair coming out of a real head.
The Close-Up Test
If I purchase a new wig, I am not going to rate it based on selfies.
However, I put on something that is exposed to natural sunlight and see how it looks when engaging with others in person.
Coffee shops.
Family get-togethers.
Errand running.
This is normally when poor-quality lace is detected.
With this wig, I must say that I really did forget about the wig I had on. This was because friends were commenting on my hair without even asking whether it was a wig or not. Even standing before a mirror in broad daylight, the lace line was hardly noticeable.
Honestly, this is the greatest compliment I could give any wig.
Glueless Was the Surprise Feature
Truthfully, I was not convinced about the concept of glueless wigs.
I have worn many wigs that started to move around after a while and thus did not find all designs of glueless wigs reliable.
Fortunately, this one made me change my mind.
The elastic band which can be adjusted, the strong cap design, and the combs that were included kept everything well in place without being too tight.
I was able to spend an entire day running errands, having lunch with some friends, and driving for a long time, all without having the urge to continuously feel the top of my head.
The Second Wig That Earned a Spot in My Rotation
The second HD Lace Wig I used had a completely different feel.
While the previous one gave a more natural appearance, this one had more density and volume to it.
If you prefer fuller looks without being too overdone, then this one was also quite amazing.
The lace was just as easy to melt away; the knots were minimal enough as it was, and I didn’t have to bleach it to wear it.
One appeared very casual in appearance.
The other was slightly more refined, as if you had just come from the salon.
I have kept both for use on different occasions.
What Actually Makes an HD Lace Wig Worth Buying?
Experimenting with different types of wigs helped me realize that invisible lace is not everything that counts.
A true seamless wig is the combination of various elements coming together.
The hairline has to be slightly pre-plucked rather than creating a straight line on your forehead.
It is important that the knots be subtle enough not to be instantly noticeable.
This lace must be soft, delicate, and flexible enough to match perfectly.
This cap must fit well without applying any sort of pressure on the scalp.
The most important thing is that the hair should look natural and not be stiff and too shiny.
All this means that once everything is put into place, you stop thinking about whether the wig is realistic and simply enjoy wearing it.
Is It Really Worth Spending More?
Before, I used to spend less on wigs under the assumption that I could customize them myself.
However, once I calculated how much I was spending on bleach, hair dye, styling products, replacing all those wigs I plucked too much, and all that time I had to spend fixing it, it wasn’t really that cost-efficient at all.
Spending a bit extra on a ready-to-wear wig not only saved me time but also prevented some frustration.
Rather than treating each new wig as if it needs a makeover, I could just use it as is.
My Honest Take After Months of Testing
Not all HD lace wigs are hype-worthy.
Many still need a lot of customization despite the marketing claims.
However, once you get your hands on one that’s really high quality, the difference is immediately noticeable.
You waste less time in front of the mirror.
You will not worry too much about your hairline.
You will not carry glue anywhere just in case.
You will become more confident since people cannot notice that you are wearing a wig.
That’s all I want from an HD lace wig.
Owning an HD lace wig that can be worn right out of the box is one of the best things that I have done for myself. If you’re ready to give up the lengthy customization process that goes into each installation, then purchasing HD lace wigs from WowAngel is one of the best choices.

Amazon Sundays: The Pieces Staying in Rotation
This week’s Amazon Sunday is centered on the pieces I’d reach for now that will also carry me into the next few months as the temperatures start to shift. Everything still feels right for July, but we’re adding a little more texture, more fall-forward finishes and super light layers, from suede to lace-edged cotton and striped shirting that can be worn open now and layered later.
I’m leaning into that balance at this point in the season, where a bright bead necklace brings color to cotton, a button-down can go from pool layer to dinner shirt, and a fuller skirt or relaxed pant adds shape while still feeling airy. These are the finds that stay in rotation, made for warm days, cooler nights, and the outfits that land somewhere in between.
Browse the full selection below, and explore more in our JB Amazon Shop and Amazon Storefront, refreshed weekly.

Something on your mind? Chat about it here.
Brooks Brothers’ summer sale is on, and they’ve got a lot of cute things, including this 100% supima cotton cardigan with variegated stripes — I’ve shown the black one but there’s also a khaki and red one.
Because it’s clearance, inventory varies by color, but they all have a good amount left. I like that the 100% cotton cardigan is machine washable, and has a bit of banding at the bottom for shape.
The cardigan was $138, but is now marked to $69 at Brooks Brothers. They actually have a number of cardigans in the sale that look great as well as a number of 100% cotton sweateres. I’d also trust them for short sleeved sweaters; this cashmere/wool one looks like a great basic.
Psst: there are a ton of striped cardigans in the Nordstrom sale too if you want to see what’s trending!
