Zynk Design creates premium martial arts academy in Manila

Published

on

By Liz Terry    27 Jul 2026

UK wellness interiors specialist Zynk Design has completed the design of Round House, a new martial arts academy in Makati, Metro Manila, created to offer a more premium and inclusive alternative to the traditional combat gym.

Located on the sixth floor of A and V Crystal Tower in Legazpi Village, the academy combines a large martial arts floor with strength and conditioning, private training, premium changing facilities and a dedicated recovery suite.

Round House was founded by Jonathan Fong, who drew on his experience of training overseas to create an academy where beginners and experienced martial artists can learn alongside one another through structured programming and high-quality coaching.

The name combines the precision of the roundhouse kick with the idea of the academy as a welcoming place to gather – a dual identity reflected in Zynk’s design.

Rather than relying on the red-and-black palette traditionally associated with combat sports, Zynk has anchored the training spaces in charcoal, grey and deep green, creating an environment that feels disciplined and athletic without becoming intimidating.

The main floor is wrapped in mirrors, broadening the sense of space and giving students continuous visual feedback as they train. Grey and green mats define the activity zones, while black structural elements, equipment and storage create a strong visual framework around the perimeter.

Overhead, a combination of angular white light panels and linear strips cuts across the dark ceiling. Their fragmented geometry picks up the faceted Round House brand mark and brings energy and movement to the interior, while delivering the even illumination needed for coaching and training.

The academy’s punching bags have been arranged around the edge of the floor, leaving the centre open and adaptable for classes, drills and sparring. Integrated timber storage provides a place for equipment, helping the academy maintain a more ordered appearance than the typically crowded combat gym.

The strength and conditioning zone continues the dark, industrial treatment, with black rubber flooring, exposed services and streamlined lighting. Perimeter windows bring daylight into the space, while a mirrored wall increases visibility and makes the compact training area feel larger.

Zynk has used a markedly softer palette in the changing rooms and recovery spaces. Timber locker fronts, matching benches and built-in vanity joinery introduce warmth, while concealed lighting and pale finishes create an atmosphere closer to a premium health club or spa.

The recovery suite includes a plunge pool and shower, set within a compact, softly illuminated room featuring stone-effect surfaces, timber detailing and recessed ceiling lighting. Its inclusion supports Round House’s positioning of martial arts as part of a wider wellness routine rather than simply a competitive sport.

“We don’t just see this as a gym,” said Jen Uyehara, vice president of operations. “It’s an academy that integrates world-class coaching, meaningful community, holistic recovery and premium facilities.”

Round House offers classes in kickboxing, Muay Thai and mixed martial arts disciplines and is affiliated with the Bas Rutten-inspired Bang Muay Thai system, which combines traditional Muay Thai with modern MMA techniques. Its philosophy – “precision over power” – is expressed through a structured curriculum intended to develop technique, confidence and long-term progression. Round House

The project builds on Zynk’s experience in the Philippines. In 2023, the company designed the 12,000sq ft gym at SMDC’s Rich Residences in Manila, creating a two-storey facility with a prominent boxing and MMA offer, strength and conditioning and multi-use sports spaces. Zynk Design

Harjinder Kaur Wins Silver As India Bag 7th Weightlifting Medal At Commonwealth Games 2026

India’s Harjinder Kaur produced a brilliant performance to win the women’s 69kg weightlifting silver medal at the Commonwealth Games, breaking Games records in both the snatch and clean and jerk on Tuesday. The 29-year-old, who had won a bronze medal at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games in the higher 71kg category, delivered one of the finest performances of her career to earn India their seventh medal from the sport. She rewrote the Games record in the snatch twice, first clearing 99kg before improving it to 101kg with a confident final attempt.

Harjinder then continued her record-breaking spree in the clean and jerk, successfully lifting 123kg before raising the bar to 126kg, taking her overall total to 227kg.

Despite her outstanding effort, Harjinder was up against an exceptional performance from Canada’s Charlotte Simoneau, who proved to be in a class of her own.

The Canadian shattered the Games records in every category, hoisting a massive 108kg in the snatch and 132kg in the clean and jerk for a combined total of 240kg — also a new Commonwealth Games record — to finish 13kg clear of the Indian.

Harjinder’s silver added to India’s impressive run in weightlifting, with the contingent continuing to establish itself as one of the strongest teams at the Games.

Her consistent lifting under pressure and ability to keep improving her marks highlighted the progress she has made since Birmingham, even though Simoneau’s extraordinary numbers left little room for a challenge.

Indian weightlifters have now enjoyed a productive campaign, collecting seven medals so far — one gold, five silver and one bronze — underlining the country’s growing depth and consistency on the Commonwealth stage.

2026 Big Ten Media Days takeaways: Matt Campbell ready to contend at Penn State

Published

on

The Big Ten arrived in Chicago with its chest out and little interest in playing second fiddle to the SEC. Three consecutive national championships have changed the league’s posture, turning perceived Midwestern arrogance into earned confidence. Coaches and administrators aren’t dodging the comparison anymore. They’re embracing it.

Day 1 delivered no shortage of urgency from several programs entering defining seasons. Lincoln Riley commanded the spotlight at USC, where patience is thinning and a College Football Playoff appearance feels necessary to validate the Trojans’ investment in his vision. The roster is better, the defense has improved and the excuses have evaporated entering Year 5.

Penn State offered a different kind of intrigue with Matt Campbell taking over a program still chasing its first breakthrough in the expanded playoff era. Campbell’s familiarity with several former Iowa State players should ease the transition, but expectations in Happy Valley remain unforgiving after the previous staff was fired despite five top-10 finishes over the last 12 seasons.

Then there’s Wisconsin, where Luke Fickell faces mounting pressure after consecutive disappointing seasons and continued offensive uncertainty. The Badgers cannot afford another year of empty promises, especially after pushing all resources toward the center of the table with a 33-player transfer haul.

Tuesday’s conversations — including a narrative-setting excerpt from commissioner Tony Petitti — reinforced the Big Ten’s growing depth, but the loudest messages came from coaches who understand winning is no longer preferred: It’s required.

Why Penn State should be taken seriously

Unlike most first-year Power Four coaches, Campbell has considerable familiarity with his roster since half of his projected starting lineup consists of former Iowa State players. Continuity is similar for Alex Golesh at Auburn, but the biggest difference for Campbell is a schedule break — the Nittany Lions’ slate ranks among the nation’s most favorable.

The only Big Ten team to miss Ohio State, Oregon and Indiana during the regular season, Penn State has a yellow brick road to a nine-win finish or better and hopes to do it with 40 transfers and an impressive staff.

The synergy in Happy Valley is already noticeable.

“I’ve always believed when you put the right culture and the right people, that’s what truly breeds success in college football,” Campbell said. “Over the last six months, what we’ve worked really hard to make sure we have the right people, the right people with the right value.”

Campbell, who nearly took the Detroit Lions’ opening in 2021, said only a “perfect opportunity” could pry him away from the Cyclones, and the Penn State job was just that.

USC embracing high-end expectations

Lincoln Riley realizes this is the season USC’s grand experiment must finally produce something substantial. The recruiting momentum is real after signing the nation’s top class, the roster welcomes back a nation-leading 15 starters and the Trojans appear better equipped to handle the Big Ten’s physicality.

Now comes the difficult part: creating week-to-week consistency.

“This is what it’s supposed to feel like here,” Riley said about CFP pressure. “I’ve said this multiple times. I mean, the only two places I’ve been a coach were blue-blood schools with the highest expectations. I haven’t really known anything different. We’re. product of our own experiences, and that’s been mine.

“Every year, I expect to win. I expect us to win and compete for and win championships. That hasn’t changed. I do, though, will give you what has changed. I think we’re more equipped than the previous three years. That’s not a hope or a wish. Those are facts, and there are a lot of facts to back that up. It all stems from alignment and momentum within the program. It’s real, and it’s palpable.”

USC did not break the bank to pry Riley away from his previous post for nine-win seasons or respectable bowl trips. The expectation is College Football Playoff appearances, an honor the Trojans haven’t yet experienced since the postseason expanded in 2014. Anything short of a spot in the 12-team bracket this season will intensify questions about whether Riley is capable of restoring the program to championship status.

There are no more convenient excuses. Riley has reshaped his staff, most notably by hiring new defensive coordinator Gary Patterson. He’s a proven defensive mind tasked with simplifying the scheme while amplifying the Trojans’ talent. USC’s schedule presents challenges, but it also offers multiple opportunities to impress the selection committee.

The Trojans do not necessarily need to win the Big Ten to save Riley from the hottest of seats. They do, however, need to be part of the playoff conversation late in the year. This season’s about delivering, not selling another vision.

Perhaps returning star quarterback Jayden Maiava, who led the conference in passing with 3,711 yards, pushes the Trojans to the next level.

“Of all the guys I’ve been fortunate enough to coach, I don’t know that I’ve had any that have improved from Day 1 up to this point as Jayden has,” Riley said. “It’s been fun to see him grow as a player, grow as a leader and really start to embrace what it means to be the starting quarterback at USC.”

Luke Fickell understands job pressure

There’s no room for another false start at Wisconsin for Fickell, who was hired to modernize a proud program and contend in the Big Ten. Inconsistency, offensive misfires and roster turnover have stalled that vision, with tangible progress needed.

Fickell acknowledges this program has failed to evolve under his watch, but tangible progress is coming.

“The last two years for us have not been up to the standard, and I’m not shying away from that,” Fickell said. “The standard of what we have to uphold as a football program hasn’t been. That’s not just in the wins and losses, the physicality, the toughness … it hasn’t been there. We’ve got to do a helluva lot better job. I can promise you that we will. Things are obviously moving in that direction.”

The Badgers needed more size, speed and proven production after another wave of departures and believe they have solidified those roster issues through the portal. Whether those pieces mesh quickly will determine Fickell’s future, and there’s no runway for experimentation, either.

Wisconsin opens against Notre Dame before playing Penn State and Michigan State during the first five games.

“I can tell you this, we’re going in a different direction,” Fickell said.

Former Wisconsin athletic director Chris McIntosh reportedly asked Fickell if he wanted to step away during a six-game losing skid in 2025, but both agreed to hunker down. McIntosh eventually gave Fickell a public vote of confidence, but he resigned this spring. Successor Shawn Eichorst, who spent the past eight years at Texas, may have a shorter leash.

Illinois is all in on new-look Illinois offensive line

Illinois coach Bret Bielema spent much of last season’s second half ensuring his primary position group would be a team strength this fall.

The team is protecting its investment in former ECU starting quarterback Kaitin Houser with a couple of experienced newcomers at the line of scrimmage.

“I made a huge commitment of time on my behalf and our personnel staff to look at potential portal players and make sure we’re going after the right people,” Bielema said. “We don’t have snaps at Illinois, but Christian Martin, my left tackle, played a lot of football at Colorado. Maika Matelau played a lot of JUCO football. We have Jake Renfroe, who has started at Cincinnati and Wisconsin — a lot of reps, even though it hasn’t been at Illinois.

Brandon Henderson is our right guard, the only returning player who’s been a starter for two years. Our right tackle, Nate (Knapkik) started in the bowl game for us has played a lot of good football.”

Bielema coached at Wisconsin from 2006 through 2012 before spending five years at Arkansas in the SEC. Now, Big Ten programs are spending at the level of other top programs for talent.

“You go around to every team, the rosters have changed because of those two components — the transfer rule and revenue sharing. It’s a different world,” Bielema said. “Anything beyond that is nonsense. That’s where I’m coming from.”

Rutgers’ Greg Schiano harps on foundational changes

For the first time since returning to Rutgers ahead of the 2020 season, Schiano feels the pieces are in place to turn things around. Schiano credited the braintrust of Rutgers Board of Governors Chair Amy Towers, university president William Tate and athletic director Keli Zenn for pushing that vision.

“Vertical alignment to me isn’t a slogan, vertical alignment is when you have a board chair, a president, an AD and a football coach who look at winning at Rutgers the same,” Schiano said. “And also look at the investment needed to do it. We have a deep and talented roster, the deepest and most talented I’ve had since I’ve been back.”

Schiano is 31-41 overall with only two winning seasons since his return, but he has come up empty against the Big Ten’s best teams. He’s hoping all-conference-caliber playmakers KJ Duff at wideout and running back Antwan Raymond can be the cogs that get the Scarlet Knights back to respectability this fall.

Iowa’s quarterback situation iffy at best

It’s either Hank Brown or Jeremy Hecklinski for the Hawkeyes under center this season, but as of now, Kirk Ferentz has no idea which player he’ll choose with the help of offensive coordinator Tim Lester after an even split of offseason reps.

Hecklinski was the backup to Mark Gronowski last fall, but Brown — an Auburn transfer — closed the gap during the spring.

“Right now, we don’t know the answer, and I can only tell you we’ll know the answer when we know it, hopefully,” Ferentz said. “Sometime in August, maybe that will become apparent. Maybe in-season. Can’t rule out any possibilities. The bottom line is we don’t know who our starter is at this point, but we’re really pleased with the guys we have competing and the growth they’ve shown within the program.”

Ouch.

That’s hardly reassuring for an Iowa offense still searching for stability at the most important position.

Tony Petitti, Greg Sankey are great ‘frienemies’

The Big Ten and SEC’s working relationship is far from fractured, though it may appear so thanks to the CFP expansion drama.

Petitti said he spoke with the SEC’s Greg Sankey five times before taking the podium Tuesday as the pair shared thoughts on the Protect College Sports Act and where they stood as leading voices in college football. He believes the competition between the sport’s two best leagues only strengthens the game as a whole.

“SEC fans really like the rivalry,” Petitti said. “It would be great if we played each other more. From a fan perspective, having a rivalry between SEC and Big Ten, it couldn’t be better.”

The Big Ten has long been an advocate of a 24-team College Football Playoff model. Sankey, who floated the idea of the SEC breaking away from the NCAA last week, appears to be on an island with their expansion preference.

“People point to the playoff and try to make it bigger than it is,” Petitti said. “The fans love the rivalry, we want to double down on that because it’s the right thing for all our sports to play those games. And as a working partner, I don’t think it can be much better to be honest with you.”

While Petitti lauded his relationship with the other “Power Two” league, he pushed back on the notion that the SEC’s depth made its nine-game schedule much harder than the Big Ten’s — a talking point repeated several times during SEC Media Days last week in Tampa.

“The idea that the middle of our conference isn’t hard? That’s not right,” Petitti said.

What You Should Know About Zidane’s Appointment as France Head Coach

Published

on

Former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has been appointed as the new head coach of the France national team, ending years of speculation about his future.

The 54-year-old replaces Didier Deschamps, who stepped down after France lost to Spain in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, bringing an end to his 14-year spell in charge.

Here are the key things to know about Zidane’s appointment:

  • Roberto ManciniRoberto Mancini

Zidane is one of France’s greatest footballers. He helped the country win the 1998 FIFA World Cup on home soil and also played a key role in their success at Euro 2000.

Returns to coaching after five years

The Frenchman has not managed a team since leaving Real Madrid for a second time in 2021. During his time with the Spanish giants, he won three straight UEFA Champions League titles and several domestic trophies.

Contract runs through 2030 World Cup qualifiers

Speaking after his appointment, Zidane described the role as a dream come true.

“I’ve often said it: there’s nothing greater than the French national team. So it’s a joy and obviously a great source of pride to become the manager of this French national team,” he said.

He also thanked French Football Federation president Philippe Diallo and paid tribute to Deschamps and his coaching staff.

“I want to thank president Philippe Diallo, the executive committee, and the French Football Federation for their confidence and acknowledge the 14 years of service from Didier and his staff. Andy Burnham hits out at Fifa over plan to sell stakes in World Cup

Published

on

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has strongly criticised Fifa’s proposal to establish a private company to manage its competitions, asserting that the World Cup “was never anyone’s to sell”.

The football governing body confirmed plans for Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE), a new entity designed to consolidate the sale of commercial rights with the operational delivery of its tournaments.

Fifa said that Thrive Eternal, a company formed in April this year with connections to the extended family of US president Donald Trump, is slated to lead the proposed investor group for FFE. The move immediately sparked considerable backlash from fans and Uefa alike, with the European football body warning that the plan “crosses a line that football’s governing institutions should never cross”.

Mr Burnham joined the chorus of disapproval, taking to X to declare: “The World Cup is not a product.”

He elaborated: “Let me say this very directly. Football does not belong to investors. It belongs to the people who fill the stands and who stand on the touchline week in, week out, rain or shine. The World Cup is not a product. It is the greatest competition in world sport, and it was never anyone’s to sell. Dress the deal up however you like. Once you have sold a piece of it, you have sold out. Football belongs to the fans. It always has, and it always will.”

Fifa, however, maintains that it will retain “exclusive authority” over football governance, competitions, the match calendar, and all regulatory and sporting decisions.

The organisation added that the creation of FFE would significantly boost football development funding for national associations, projecting an expenditure of more than 10 billion US dollars (£7.5 billion) on development over the next four years.

Thrive Eternal, expected to spearhead the proposal, is run by Joshua Kushner, the brother of Mr Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Reports from The Times suggest that Fifa president Gianni Infantino could potentially assume the role of commissioner or chief executive of the new venture from 2031. Mr Infantino is currently seeking re-election for a four-year term as Fifa president next year.

In a statement, Uefa reiterated its grave concerns: “This crosses a line that football’s governing institutions should never cross. Uefa takes it extremely seriously. So should every national football association. So should every stakeholder: leagues, clubs, players, supporters, governments and everyone who cares about the future of the game. The soul and governance of football are not assets to trade – especially with zero transparency as to who gains financially. None of us are the owners of football. It is not Fifa’s to sell.”

MANILA, Philippines–Blackwater’s Sedrick Barefield is honored to be considered part of Team Philippines for the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, with his name listed in Gilas Pilipinas’ initial pool of players.

Barefield, along with Meralco’s Brandon Bates, was among those named to the 30-man pool for the quadrennial meet, where Gilas will defend the gold medal it won three years ago.

Article continues after this advertisement

Barefield said he only knew of his inclusion when Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Erika Dy mentioned their names during her appearance at the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum on Tuesday.

“I’m hoping that it’s a possibility,” Barefield said after Blackwater’s 102-93 loss to Phoenix in the PBA Governors’ Cup at Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

While Barefield is ineligible to represent the Philippines as a local in Fiba competitions, there’s a chance of him playing in the Asian Games with organizers only requiring a Philippine passport to be eligible.

The prospect of becoming a Gilas player, at least for the Asiad, is something Barefield hopes would come to fruition.

“It’ll be a dream come true, just to go out there and compete with those guys representing the country,” said Barefield. “It would mean the world, it would mean everything. That’s high-level basketball that you always want to be a part of, that you dream of being a part of.”

The veteran forward is returning to the Warriors on a one-year, $27.7 million deal, ESPN‘s Shams Charania reported on Tuesday.

Green had initially opted out of his previous contract in order to give the Warriors flexibility to pursue LeBron James, per Charania, but with his decision to head to Philadelphia instead, the Warriors re-upped with Green.

A four-time NBA all-star, Green was part of dynastic Warriors crew that earned four NBA championships between 2015 and 2022.

In 68 games in 2025-26, the 36-year-old averaged 8.4 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists in 27.5 minutes per game.

FDA suspends food permits of Cricket Club of India and MIG in Mumbai | Other Sports News

Published

on

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has suspended the food business licences of the Cricket Club of India (CCI), MIG Cricket Club in Bandra East, and three other clubs in the city for alleged violations of food safety and hygiene norms, officials said on Tuesday.

The CCI’s kitchen lacked segregation between vegetarian and non-vegetarian food preparation areas, and FDA inspectors also found a large number of cockroaches and flies near food handling and waste disposal areas, said an official statement.

The FDA under its newly appointed commissioner Tukaram Mundhe has taken action against several famous eateries and food establishments in the city and elsewhere in the state over the last two months.

At the CCI, water was found dripping on stored food inside cold storage, drains were clogged, cutting boards were unhygienic, rotten vegetables, overripe mushrooms and expired food items were stored, and FIFO/FEFO (‘First In, First Out’ and ‘First Expired, First Out’)
Practices and proper food labelling were not followed, it said.

Utensils were placed directly on the floor, and grease, sludge and stagnant water was found accumulated around food preparation areas, the statement further claimed.

It also cited the absence of colour-coded chopping boards which increases the risk of cross-contamination. These violations warranted immediate suspension of the club’s food licence under the Food Safety and Standards Act and related regulations, the authority said.

The food licence of MIG Cricket Club was suspended as an unauthorised catering agency without a valid FSSAI licence was operating from the premises, the FDA said.

The inspection at MIG Cricket Club also found live cockroaches and cobwebs in the kitchen, it said.

Other violations included improper handling and storage of raw, cooked, vegetarian and non-vegetarian food, failure to conduct periodic food and water testing, unauthorised structural and management changes without informing the licensing authority, and the absence of qualified technical personnel and mandatory health records of food handlers, the FDA said.

Food licenses of RK Juhu Gymkhana, The Aparna Juhu Gymkhana and The Willindon Sports Club were also suspended for various violations, the release said.
