Hello and welcome to this week’s edition of the IFI Newsletter!
Opening in-cinema this week are the darkly comic kitchen drama La Cocina, the deliciously twisted thriller Misericordia, and Joshua Oppenheimer’s apocalyptic musical The End.
Special events this week include three showings of the seldom-screened and highly acclaimed Farewell, My Concubine, our monthly Mystery Matinee on Sunday 30th, Breakfast on Pluto as selected by the IFI Youth Panel on Monday 31st, and The Love Witch on Thursday 3rd selected by Lulit Lius of The GALPAL Collective for The Bigger Picture.
To conclude Between Heaven and Hell, our two-month celebration of the work of Ingmar Bergman, we are delighted to welcome Jan Holmberg, CEO of the Ingmar Bergman Foundation for the next in our series of IFI Talks: The Life and Work of Ingmar Bergman on Sunday 30th. Meanwhile there are only a few tickets are left for our final Bergman screening of Fanny and Alexander this Saturday 29th.
Fancy a trip to the cinema this Mother’s day? Why not catch a preview of Four Mothers on Sunday 30th. Continue the celebration by booking into the IFI Café Bar, where all mothers will receive a free glass of Prosecco with their meal.

Chen Kaige’s sweeping, deeply moving epic – one of the most acclaimed, yet rarely screened, films of the ‘90s – is presented in a new 4K restoration.
Beginning in 1924, the story follows the intertwined lives of two Peking opera performers, Cheng Dieyi (Leslie Cheung) and Duan Xiaolou (Zhang Fengyi). Raised and trained together in the rigorous and often brutal world of the opera, the two develop an intense, complex bond.
IFI YOUTH PANEL: BREAKFAST ON PLUTO

This month, the IFI Youth Panel have chosen Breakfast on Pluto, directed by Irish filmmaker Neil Jordan, adapted from Pat McCabe’s novel of the same name, and starring a young Cillian Murphy. The film follows Patricia, a trans woman trying to escape the social judgement of her small Irish town and locate her birth mother in London, coming across violence and discrimination.
THE BIGGER PICTURE: THE LOVE WITCH

This month’s Bigger Picture choice is from the GALPAL Collective’s Lulit Luis who will present this dark supernatural horror comedy by US feminist writer-director Anna Biller.
It’s the story of Elaine, a modern-day witch, who concocts potions in her apartment that she’ll serve up to men to get them to fall in love with her, with disastrous results.
