The Best Plus-Size T-Shirts for Work (2026 Update)

Sure, we all know what wardrobe essentials for work professional women are supposed to have in their closets, but if you’re buying one for the first time or replacing one you’ve worn into the ground, it can be a pain to find exactly the right incarnation in stores. In “The Hunt,” we search the stores for a basic item that every woman should have.
We have a whole post discussing the best women’s T-shirts for layering at the office — and while we always include a plus-size section, I thought I’d do a separate post to discuss some of our favorite options, as well as to round up some unique categories just for plus sizes, including the best basic tees in extended sizes (up to 6X!).
As I noted in the other post, a good basic tee for work should be opaque, not too low cut, and have sleeves. (Know your office — sleeveless looks aren’t acceptable everywhere!) I’ve always been a fan of tees that are thick enough so bra details are still a mystery (although it also helps to wear T-shirt bras — here’s our latest roundup for the best bras to wear to work)!
I would say that a “weekend tee” would have more casual details, such as pockets and shirttails.
New for 2026: We changed a lot of our selections for the best products, actually, while keeping links to some of our favorite classic picks. As always, we’re looking for polished tees that work under blazers, cardigans, and suits — not flimsy weekend-only basics.

The Best Plus-Size T-Shirts for Work (Executive Summary)
In general, Universal Standard is probably the best overall plus-size tee for work if you want a polished layering basic, while Quince is the best affordable option and Eileen Fisher is best for sustainable natural fibers.
Why Trust Corporette®
At Corporette®, we’ve been covering professional women’s workwear since 2008, and have written hundreds of posts about comfortable office clothing and shoes, business casual wardrobes, and reader-favorite brands for wardrobe essentials. (We just did a big update to our guide to the best women’s suits!)
Our community is one of the best parts of Corporette® — you’ll see a lot of professional women at all career levels, discussing which clothes work for their offices and their lifestyle.
Who This Guide is For
This guide is for women looking for polished plus-size T-shirts for work — especially tees that:
- layer smoothly under blazers and cardigans
- aren’t see-through
- have sleeves suitable for conservative offices (sleeveless looks have come a long way, but know your office!)
- come in extended sizes (including up to 4X, 5X, and 6X at some retailers)
- work for business casual offices, law firms, conferences, and hybrid workplaces
- look more polished than weekend tees
How We Picked the Best Plus-Size Tees
We focused on office-appropriate plus-size tees in cotton, ponte, linen blends, silk blends, and other substantial fabrics — not flimsy casual basics.

The Very Best Plus-Size Tees for Work Outfits
The Best Plus-Size Tee Overall: Universal Standard

Universal Standard is a fabulous basic for layering underneath a blazer, cardigan, or sweater blazer — the fabric is soft but substantial and it drapes well. Some of their tees are even part of US’s Fit Liberty program, which will allow you to exchange sizes up to a year after you’ve worn the shirt.
Other great plus size work tops overall include Quince, LL Bean, Lands’ End, and Talbots.
The Best Affordable Plus-Size Tee: Quince

If you like your price point under $20, I think the best simple tee you can find for work in 2026 is from Quince. Other options in the under $20 category: Amazon Essentials (up to 6X), Lane Bryant, Kohl’s, and Old Navy.
(Similar T-shirt-y options at Quince to consider while you’re there: this stretch silk T-shirt blouse and this sweater tee, which are harder to find on site otherwise.)
For just a bit more, check out affordable office-appropriate T-shirts at L.L. Bean, Lands’ End, J.Crew, J.Crew Factory, J.Jill, and Eddie Bauer.

The Best Plus-Size Tee with Elbow-Length Sleeves: Chico

I keep hearing great things about Chico’s tees, and the price is right — they’re normally $49, but today they’re marked down to $25. Sizes range from 0-22.
Other great options for polished T-shirts with longer sleeves include this Lauren Ralph Lauren top has been around for years, as well as Lane Bryant’s “Perfect Sleeve” line of tees. J.Jill also has a few!
The Best Plus-Size T-shirt With little Details: Talbots

Talbots is always a great basic for professional clothes in plus sizes — they also have the hard to find “plus petite” category, although fortunately that matters less with T-shirts. I also think of them as one of the most reliable places to go if you want a slightly “elevated” tee with little details like eyelet (pictured), lace, or different cuts, colors, and patterns.
Lands’ End also has a plus petite category — and they also often have T-shirts with similar details. Another few spots with plus-size basics for workwear with little details: J.Crew Factory (up to 3X) and J.Jill (up to 4X).
The Best Sustainable Plus-Size Tee: Eileen Fisher

Eileen Fisher can be pricey as far as plus-size tees for work go, but most of their clothes are made in the U.S. with sustainable fibers. The most options are of course on the brand’s website, but if you prefer the return policy at Nordstrom there’s also a huge selection there (including this fun teal linen version, pictured).
EF also has an interesting “renew” policy in that they’ll take back old EF clothes, even if they’re worn or damaged. You get a $5 gift certificate and they repurpose the fabric into other creations.
Eco-friendly plus-size clothes can be hard to find, but Eileen Fisher, Ulla Popken, and wool& all offer eco-friendly, basic tees for work.
The Best Polished T-shirt To Wear Beneath a Suit: Anne Klein

This miiight be controversial for a number of reasons — first, some people will tell you you can’t wear T-shirts beneath suits. We totally disagree and always have; if you’re wearing a classic suit there’s no reason you can’t just wear a simple tee beneath the suit. As always, we suggest looking for shirts that don’t have pockets or shirttail hems, and while you don’t want voluminous sleeves (difficult to get into a blazer), you do want SOME sleeves to help you save on drycleaning.
The second reason this might be controversial: this particular pick might not even read “T-shirt” to some people because you may think “blouse” instead.
Whatever you want to call it, Anne Klein has a number of really cute T-shirts right now that I think are the perfect thing to wear beneath suits. Kasper and Tahari are both also flush with good options right now.
Of course, the downside to these types of brands is that they tend to be made with a lot of polyester. If you’re looking for more natural fibers, you can get Pima cotton at LL Bean, Talbots, and Lands’ End, as well as other sustainable, breathable T-shirts from Eileen Fisher and wool&.

FAQ: Plus-Size Tees for Work

Yes — in most modern business casual offices, a polished T-shirt layered under a blazer or cardigan is completely appropriate. Look for opaque fabrics, structured cuts, and minimal casual detailing. Here’s our whole Guide to Business Casual.
What makes a T-shirt look professional?
Thicker fabrics, clean necklines, sleeves, and tailored drape usually look more polished than thin jersey or oversized weekend tees.

There’s so much more to us. Lauryn Hill was the consciousness, Salt n Pepa was fun, fashion and femininity, Missy Elliott was the innovator, Queen Latifah was the Queen. As proud as I am that women are still doing their thing, I’d love for the pendulum to swing in the middle a little bit more. Get a little more voices that are being celebrated.” Agreed!

Ruffles by the Water – Julia Berolzheimer
OUTFIT DETAILS: Solid & Striped Bikini Top, Solid & Striped Bikini Bottoms, Maria De La Orden Top, Muzungu Sisters Pants
There is something about ruffles by the water that just makes sense. They move the way a wave does, a little flutter, a little lift, and pairing them with swim makes it feel like a real outfit instead of a suit with a cover-up thrown over it.
That is exactly why I love styling them together. Swim keeps everything easy, while a frilled edge, a fluttered hem, or a soft bit of volume brings shape, bounce, and a little sense of occasion without making anything feel too dressed. It can take the whole idea from practical cover-up to something much more charming. Think of it as a finishing touch that works best on the beach, the kind that lets your outfit catch the breeze before you have even left the ocean.

What’s In Your Bag? – Corporette.com
This post may contain affiliate links and Corporette® may earn commissions for purchases made through links in this post. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

Readers were having a great conversation this morning about which bags they like to carry and what proportion they should be to your body. I totally agree, but I also think a lot of it comes down to what you want to CARRY in your bag — I dislike super small bags because what are you even carrying in there? We haven’t had a good “what’s in your bag” discussion for a while, so let’s talk about it today.
I’ve really (really) reduced my reliance on purses since the pandemic… part of that is my kids getting older so I have to carry less stuff, and part of that is working from home. When I do anything beyond my usual minimal makeup I tend to just stick whichever lipstick I’m going to use in my pocket… and I always have pockets. In the winter all of my coats have a lip gloss in the pocket as well as a few loose tissues because #fancy.
So my bag is really extremely limited right now. I have one makeup-sized pouch (I think it actually came with an old MZ Wallace bag) that I move from bag to bag.
- my slim wallet, which just fits 6 cards and folded cash and checks
- a lipgloss or two
- a tiny pill case (mine is ancient from the Container Store I think, but this one looks great if you’re hunting for similar)
- a pen (ideally G2)
- a concealer (this elf one was such a great dupe for Touche L’Eclat but I think elf has stopped making it)
- ideally a hair elastic but those tend to go missing, ha… here it’s wrapped around a really thin mirror that I got from an alumni event, and have to add to my purse because I’m more or less blind without my glasses
The bag itself is from Rothy’s, from a few years ago (this looks similar) — I have a few of their nylon bags and they’re super lightweight, durable, and washable. They don’t have a ton of interior pockets, but because I keep most things in my little pouch that’s fine. This one is on the smaller side, but it fits the few things I want it to so I’m happy with — I have something from them that is closer in size to Rothy’s Daily crossbody also and it’s got room for a lot more stuff in it.
Also in the bag right now I have one of the beautiful Ficcare clips (flatter and more durable than a claw clip!), a bunch of random old receipts and coupons we got at an allergy appointment, and I usually have at least a sample or two of things I’ve picked up at my dermatology appointments and then forgotten to empty. There’s room for keys, sunglasses if I need to wear them, and my phone if I need to stash it somewhere other than a pocket. That’s really all I want, and yet a lot of the bags I see right now are too small for that.
When we travel I do pull out one of my bigger bags — I still love my old MZ Wallace (really similar!) if we’re going on a big trip because it’s lightweight and has a zillion pockets. Then I’ll pack more inane things for the kids (I have recently used a folding stainless steel straw we got when they were small!), a sunscreen stick for reapplications, a hat, bandaids, a Nalgene bottle, sometimes even folded rain ponchos or ear plugs or a few granola bars or other shelf-stable snacks.
Readers, what about you — what do you keep in your bag? Do you carry a purse AND a tote if you’re heading to work, or do you have a pouch system similar to mine? What bag are you carrying today?

The Garden Party Set – Julia Berolzheimer
OUTFIT DETAILS: Rosewater House Top & Skirt, Staud Sandals, Sherman Field Necklace
I don’t know if it’s being surrounded by the landscape of Europe, or being out in the countryside, that really makes you stop and smell the flowers. They spill from window boxes, climb stone walls, frame café terraces, and seem to appear around every corner. Even a walk to dinner feels more romantic when you’re passing blooms at every turn.
The moment I saw this set, I instantly pictured myself taking a walk in the garden, perhaps amongst the roses of a villa. That feeling is what inspired this edit of floral sets, embroidered skirts and printed tops that look as though they belong somewhere with open windows. They feel pretty and a little enchanting, vivid but still easy, made for a whole range of occasions.
