Dutton’s promise to cut about 40,000 public servants will cost the government more in the long term, says Albanese, as he warns that consultants will be used instead.
During the Morrison government, an audit of the APS found that over the 2021-22 financial year, it spent $20.8 billion on consultants and outsourcing.

Albanese warned this would be brought back if a Dutton government cut public servants.
“The consultants will be back. The big four accountancy firms will deliver,” he said.
“The same public servants who are earning $120,000 will be earning $250,000 working for the big accountancy firms, doing the same thing, but sending taxpayers the bill.
“And we will be back to Robo-debt where people lost their lives.”
