» Bolton police warning after series of hoax calls in these two areas

The force said that they had received a series of hoax calls in the Smithills and Johnson Fold areas.

They said they also received the calls yesterday, which resulted in emergency responses by both Greater Manchester Police and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) in multiple instances.

A Bolton GMP spokesperson said: “Hoax 999 calls are a serious issue, wasting emergency resources and potentially endangering lives, with consequences including fines and imprisonment.

“When emergency services are tied up with hoax calls, they cannot respond to genuine emergencies, potentially putting lives at risk.”

They went on to explain that the calls were all found to have been made by children and urged parents to educate them on the impact of hoax calls.

They said: “All the calls that have been made to police have been from children.

“We ask that parents/carers ensure they supervise their child’s phone usage and educate them about the seriousness of making hoax calls.”

Making hoax calls is a criminal offence in England and can result in a fine of up to £5,000 or even six months in prison.
