Officers were in attendance at Blenheim Road in Breightmet just after 5am along with a fire engine and an ambulance.

The road was closed off by emergency services between St Osmund’s Drive and Stanworth Avenue.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that they were at the property, but only to support Greater Manchester Police (GMP).

A ladder was placed up to the first floor window by fire crews and police negotiators talked to a man through the letterbox, trying to persuade him to come out.

At around 10.30am, officers kitted in riot gear prepared shields and a battering ram to enter the property.

While negotiators talked to a man through the front door, a loud bang and shouts were heard as officers entered through the back door.

A thin window on the front of the house was smashed as police tried to subdue a man.

After apprehending him, he was escorted outside to a police van covered in a silver blanket.

A man in his 40s was detained under the Mental Health Act.

A GMP spokesperson said: “Just after 5.10am this morning (Thursday), officers were called to assist colleagues in the fire service following reports of a concern for welfare of a man on Blenheim Road, Bolton.

“Officers attended and a man in his 40s was detained under the Mental Health Act.

“Blenheim Road was closed while officers and emergency services worked are now reopened.

“We thank the public for their patience and cooperation whilst officers were in the area.”
