Bolton Wanderers fan and councillor apologises after social media post

» Bolton Wanderers fan and councillor apologises after social media post

The now-deleted post appeared on Facebook after Bolton Wanderers’ last-gasp 1-0 win over Wigan Athletic at the Brick stadium on Tuesday night (April 1).

The post was attributed to Hindley Green ward councillor John Vickers who is a Bolton fan.

It said: “Another game against the six fingered f****** Lots of empty seats as usual not in the Bolton end.”

Cllr John Vickers

Another post by the Labour councillor appeared on the BWFC Bolton till I Die page shared to his feed with a picture of the progressive rock band Jethro Tull and their release ‘Thick As a Brick’ on May 9 2024.

It said: “Yes I know most of you haven’t a clue who Jethro Tull are but I live in hope that one of you might do. Anyway this would be most appropriate for our six fingers neighbours to walk out to on match days.”

This post has now also been deleted.

Now a post has appeared on his feed complaining that ‘our local Hindley Green councillor John Vickers [is] calling us six fingers. It’s totally out of order’ with a screenshot of complaints to the Wigan Today website.

Today, Cllr Vickers said: “If I have caused any offence then I apologise. I have also removed the post. I should stress that this was on my private Facebook page and not the one I use as a councillor. They are kept completely separate.

“There is always banter between footballing rivals, whether it be Manchester, Liverpool or London clubs.

“It’s not about hating: It’s intense but friendly rivalry. I get banter all the time as a Bolton fan and it doesn’t offend me.”

Council leader David Molyneux has also been contacted for comment.

Wigan council has declined to comment.
