Josh Edwards has stopped short of fully assessing his first season in English football – adding that Charlton Athletic’s promotion would be “the cherry on top”.
The 24-year-old full-back, signed from Dunfermline in June, has made 42 appearances for the Addicks.
Edwards is gearing up for play-action with the Nathan Jones’ side no longer able to win automatic promotion following last weekend’s 3-0 loss at Wrexham.
They host Burton Albion on Saturday as the regulation campaign comes to an end.
“I’ve had a decent enough season,” Edwards told the South London Press, when asked to review his Charlton story so far . “I’ve enjoyed it and it has been one of my favourite years in professional football.
“It has been an amazing experience. It would almost be the cherry on top to get ourselves promoted. Then I’d be delighted with it.
“At the minute I can’t really say whether it is an amazing season or not until it is finished.
“I think I’ve done quite well to get myself up to speed with the English league.”
Charlton will finish fifth if third-placed Stockport County and fourth-placed Wycombe Wanderers draw when they face each other.
That would mean the Addicks facing Wycombe in the play-off semi-final. The South Londoners won both matches this season, including a recent 4-0 victory at Adams Park.
“A play-off game is over two legs but it is a one-off fixture – it will be a completely different feel to the league game,” said Edwards. “We know we can beat them, but it is a one-off tie so anything can happen. The play-offs is very unknown.
“It is something we are looking forward to and if it was Wycombe we know just because we beat them twice doesn’t mean we would turn up there and do exactly what we did last time.
“It will be a totally different game and they’ll be well-prepared for it. Just like we will be.
“We need to look back on it to see what we did well but there were things in that game that we weren’t supposed to be doing.
“We’re under no illusions we would rock back up there and do what we did to them. We need to be ready for it.”
