» Firefighters tackle kitchen fire at Johnson Fold house

Crews were called Dunsop Drive in Johnson Fold at around 7.15pm yesterday, April 2.

They said they arrived to find “heavy smoke” coming out of the property.

No one was harmed in the fire, with the occupants having made it out before firefighters arrived.

Watch Manager Carl Gleaves of Bolton North Fire Station said: “We attended a kitchen fire last night on Dunsop Drive at 7.15pm.

“The fire developed in the kitchen area and caused extensive damage to the kitchen. Smoke spread throughout the property because all the doors were left open.

“The occupants left the building before we arrived, having called 999. When we arrived it was quite a developed fire, there was a lot of black thick smoke coming out of the windows downstairs and upstairs.

“Crews used four breathing apparatus’ while extinguishing the fire.”

He added: “We forced entry into next door’s property where smoke had spread and the occupant was still at work.

“There were multiple pets in the property, including a dog and some rabbits, but fortunately we saved them and they were fine.

“The owner of the property came home to take care of them before we left the scene.

“The fire service advises residents to be very careful with candles, we believe the cause of this particular fire was a candle in the kitchen area underneath a cabinet.

“Make sure smoke alarms are working as well.”

Anyone with concerns about their smoke alarms can contact the fire service on 0800 555 815.

Safety checks and fire alarms are free of charge.

Watch Manager Gleaves added: “A difficulty for fire appliances is getting access when there are a large number of vehicles parked at the side of the road.

“In this case we did not have issues arriving, but it hindered us when we were trying to leave the scene.

“We would like to remind the public to be mindful of emergency vehicles, particularly fire engines due to their size, when parking on the street.”
