George Hotel on Great Moor Street, Bolton, 1959The George Hotel in the foreground dated back to the 1820s and, at one point, was known as the George Inn and Railway Hotel benefitting from the opening of the Great Moor Street Station in 1831.
In 1986 a survey revealed that the George served the cheapest pint of real ale in town – 71p for a pint of Wilson’s Bitter.
By 2000 trade had dwindled and the pub closed, later being converted into student flats.
The majority of the other buildings on this photo have all gone. And if you thought the days of horse and carts were long gone, just look at the poor horse having to pull a heavily-laden cart up the road.
