Speaking to Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips, the Conservative Party leader did however categorically rule out a pact with Nigel Farage’s party on a national level.

She said: “I am not going into any coalition with Nigel Farage… read my lips.

“But at a local level it’s different, there may be NOC (no overall control) – you have to do what’s right for the people in those areas.

“We have coalitions with the Lib Dems etc at a local level, but what I don’t want to hear is talks of stitch ups or plans ahead of the results.”
