Re “Councillors give selves big raises” (Justin Holmes, March 28): The hogs are at the feeding trough again. Completely out of touch. Oblivious to their surroundings (noting the exceptions and applauding them). The majority of taxpayers haven’t caught up from the economic downturn from the pandemic. Homeowners were dealt a double-digit property tax hike. Foodbanks were overwhelmed. The country, including Ontario cities, possibly facing the worst economic crisis of the century, and city council finds it fit to discuss and give themselves a hefty raise. Wow.

(Remember this at election time — what have they actually done to earn such a raise? Little to nothing)

COUNCIL PAY INCREASE A FARCE

What a pecuniary farce. Taxes were raised twice by 9% in two consecutive years. Now council votes in favour of a 24% raise and they complain about affordability costs in the city. Are they going to raise taxes again so they can pay for the raise? And Chow went to Washington to lecture other mayors about what to do. How obtuse.

(Toronto’s mayor is an embarrassment and she is surrounded by councillors who are ruining the city)

INDEPENDENCE NEEDED

I am sure every hardworking Canadian would love to have a job where they determine their pay raise. Of course, the councillors voted for a raise. I believe that the decision should be decided by an independent body.

(The only way to hold them to account for this is at the ballot box)

BE GRATEFUL

There is no way that these councillors should get a pay raise this big this time. Maybe when they start cleaning up our mess in the city: Homeless camps everywhere, garbage cans overflowing, the Jewish community being harassed and intimidated, taxes being raised without anything to show for it, a lot of people struggling financially, and most importantly, most taxpayers don’t have the money and benefits and pensions that they already have. Instead of voting yourselves a big raise, be grateful for what you have.

Sylvia Saunders

(They don’t care and are happy to make sure they take care of themselves)
