Southwark council has appointed a contractor for the Peckham Rye Station Square development, marking the final stage of the long-awaited development.
BAM Nuttal Ltd has been named as the contractor to carry out improvements which will see the Grade II listed station building and surrounding area boosted with a much needed makeover.
Gareth White, operations director, BAM, said: “We are really pleased to be awarded this contract. This scheme will greatly enhance the area to the front of Peckham Rye Station, with many public benefits.”
The council is working with the Greater London Authority and Network Rail on the project which will see the square go from a series of narrow passageways, to a “vibrant and spacious civic square”.
The project, which has been in the pipeline since planning consent was granted in 2016, has been developed with residents.
Cllr Helen Dennis, Cabinet Member for New Homes and Sustainable Development said: “This is a massively exciting time for the residents of Peckham, and having let their passion be known for the regeneration of the station square, I’m glad we’re taking a step closer to delivering for them.”
The newly-renovated façade of the 1860s station building will be enhanced by new surroundings while the dilapidated 1930s arcade will be removed in order to reinstate the original forecourt with planting.
The arches along the north and south side of the square will be refurbished to provide new premises for local and independent businesses to trade.
Rye Lane Ward cllr Esme Dobson said: “It is fantastic to see progress being made in establishing this amazing space in front of Peckham Rye Station.
“The square will bring welcome open space making the area cleaner, greener and safer for our residents.”
The first phase of the project was refurbishment and extension of the Blenheim Grove corner building which is now complete and ready to accommodate new businesses.
The final businesses remaining within the 1930s arcade will be leaving over the coming months to allow demolition of the arcade to start this summer, with the new square set to be completed next year.
The council’s transformation of Peckham Rye Station Square will also include a major station upgrade planned by Network Rail to improve accessibility, capacity and the surrounding environment.
