Police have launched a manhunt after a convicted murderer absconded from prison.

Raymond McCourt, 59, was reported missing to police around 5.30pm on Tuesday after he absconded from HMP Castle Huntly in Dundee, Police Scotland said.

The public has been warned not to approach him.

McCourt was jailed for life in 1993 for the murder of shopkeeper Khalid Mahmood and for shooting a woman and a police officer.

He was deemed suitable for release on licence in 2015, but was recalled after he stole from his girlfriend.

McCourt was described as being 6ft 2in tall, with a stocky build and short grey hair and beard, along with reduced mobility.

He was last seen wearing a long black trench coat, grey dress trousers, a grey waistcoat, blue shirt with a red and white striped tie and brown shoes.

The force said he uses public transport and has connections in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
