» Millwall boss reacts to report that Liam Roberts set for return at Burnley – South London News

Millwall head coach Alex Neil reckons it is too early to call whether Liam Roberts could be back available for Saturday’s crunch match at Burnley.

There had been a report yesterday that the goalkeeper was set to make his return from a hip flexor injury.

The Lions must win at Turf Moor on the final day of the Championship season to stand a chance of clinching a play-off place. If Coventry or Bristol City fail to get a victory in that scenario then the South Londoners will achieve a top-six finish.

First-choice stopper Lukas Jensen is out with an achilles injury and the absence of Roberts has meant first senior action at Millwall for George Evans, 19.

Asked about the Roberts story, Neil told the South London Press: “I can’t confirm anything. It is too early in the week. I don’t know where that has came from.

“I’m not sure if he is going to be available for the weekend.”

Evans made some vital saves in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Swansea.

Neil said: “George has done brilliantly. We have got loads of players who have played at this level for the first time – like Lukas Jensen and Tristan Crama. In key games like Saturday you know your goalkeeper is going to need to make a couple of key saves and you hope they are ready for that. George showed on Saturday that he was.

“The way I look at it, and the way our model is, if you look at Ben Drake being on the bench, for instance, Ben Drake is on the bench because he is an excellent left-back. That is how the younger players get their opportunity.

“Ra’ees (Bangura-Williams) got his opportunity playing. What it hopefully does do is it gives the academy reason to want to get those players playing as well as they can – developing – so that when their opportunity does come, like it has for quite a few, they are ready to go.”
