Bolton to Manchester trains will not run on these weekends

» No trains between Bolton and Manchester for upgrades



The line between Bolton and Manchester is closed today, Saturday, and tomorrow, Sunday, to allow works to take place at Salford Crescent station. 

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) are building a new platform to match increasing use of the station over several weekends between March and September this year. 

As well as this weekend, works will take place on: 

  • Saturday April 12 and Sunday 13, 2025
  • Sunday April 20, 2025
  • SundayApril 27, 2025
  • Sunday May 4. 2025
  • Saturday May 17 and Sunday 18, 2025
  • Saturday September 13 and Sunday 14, 2025

For the work to be carried out, the full line between Manchester and Bolton will be closed on those weekends.

Rail replacement buses have been put on, with some train services between Manchester, Wigan and Preston being diverted via an alternative route.

The TfGM website says: “Since the station opened in 1987, customer numbers have increased year-on-year.

“In 2022/23 the station handled almost 1.2 million entries and exits, making it one of the busiest stations in Greater Manchester.

“The station is now at the point where the existing platform can no longer cope with the increasing number of customers using it, so we’re building a new third platform, which will improve passenger flow and reduce train delays across Manchester and the North West.”
