Rivington Pike and Darwen Tower have been moved to sit next to Peel Tower in Bury by Bolton Mountain Rescue Team (MRT)

The voluntary emergency service “painstakingly” relocated the towers last night, Monday, so that locals “might visit all three in one go”.

Having rescued many walkers on the 32-mile Three Towers route over the years, the Mountain Rescue team decided to make life easier for the public and themselves by putting them nearer to each other.

A spokesperson for Bolton MRT said: “The team has put in a massive amount of backbreaking work overnight to help everyone trying to complete the Three Towers route.

“Darwen Tower and Rivington Pike have been painstakingly relocated next to Holcombe Tower, so that locals might visit all three towers in one go.

“We’ve rescued a few walkers on the 32-mile Three Towers route over the years, so to make life easier on the public and on us, we’ve decided to move all three towers next to each other.

“As a result of this effort, the Three Towers route is now a 100m sprint.”

Commenters on Facebook voiced their support for this surprise change.

Ryan Beaker said: “They have also put in a zip wire between them so you only have to climb one and then can just whip across to the others. As long as you have a belt with you, they only provide the wire.”

Rod Hardisty said: “This must have taken a lot of thinking out, and you need to put them all back by noon.”

Another commenter said that it was “not an April Fool”, having “seen them this morning”.
