A stunning installation created by members of the community is taking shape in Andrew Lane Park, Astley Bridge.
The ‘snake’ will be made up of hundreds of colourful pebbles painted by locals and put in a trench in the ground.
The pebbles, when put together, will be in the shape of the slithering reptile.
The head of the snake (Image: Cllr Hilary Fairclough) Cllr Hilary Fairclough said: “Schools, churches, community groups, businesses, and residents have been asked to join in and paint stones or pebbles, this will then form a large colourful snake to be permanently displayed in Andrew Lane Park.
“As ward councillor and chair of Friends of Astley Bridge, I have been overwhelmed by the support we have had, hundreds of stones are coming in with some absolutely fabulous designs.
“We have had abstracts, animals, crests, some featuring prominent places around the area, special dates that are important to people, you name it, it is being recorded on a stone or pebble.
“I must thank the council for their support, they have helped dig out the snake and will help to make it a permanent piece of local art once all of the stones are in, and of course the support from the community who have really got involved with this project.”

The project is open to everyone in Astley Bridge. Stones can be brought along at the Easter event at Andrew Lane Park on April 19 from noon to 3pm.

Cllr Fairclough spoke about the Easter event: “We have a really fun family time with something for everyone. There are children’s activities on the play bus, a barbecue, hook a duck, the coffee van, games stalls, entertainment from Midweek Sax, a visit from the Easter Bunny, and the biggest Chocolate Tombola in the world to raise funds for our new Christmas tree.
“There will also be Easter artwork provided by our schools and community groups on display in the area, post box toppers, and Easter displays at Andrew Lane.
“Astley Bridge is ready to celebrate Easter in style!”
