Emergency services were called to St Peter’s Way just before 2pm.
The northbound carriage was shut following the smash between M61 Kearsley roundabout, Farnworth to Raikes Lane.
Queues stretched to the M60 with drivers saying they had been caught up in the traffic for two hours.

Greater Manchester fire service praised in top report
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At just after 1.45pm today (Friday 25 April), fire crews were called to reports of a road traffic collision on St Peter’s Way in Bolton.
“One fire engine from Bolton Central Community Fire Station attended the incident which involved six vehicles.
“The crew arrived quickly and worked with Greater Manchester Police to make the vehicles and the area safe.
“Two people were treated at the scene by colleagues from North West Ambulance service.
“Firefighters were in attendance for approximately one hour”.
The road reopened just after 5pm.
