Donald Trump will announce his “Liberation Day” tariffs in the White House Rose Garden, a manicured lawn outside the West Wing where media and guests are currently assembling.

It’s his first major event in the garden since returning to the Oval Office in January, and the adjoining patio has been decked out with large American flags. The ceremony will feature several members of Trump’s cabinet, along with his key economic advisers.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is here, as is Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr and Trump’s senior trade and manufacturing counsellor Peter Navarro.

The event was due to start at 4pm local time (7am AEDT). It’s common for Trump to hold major events fairly late in the day, although this start time is notable because it means the markets have closed before the tariffs are announced.

US stock markets have generally dived after earlier tariff announcements, though they closed higher today, just moments ago.
