13 Best Anal Sex Toys, From Prostate Massagers To Butt Plugs 2026

I’m sure you’re already aware of this, but there has been an unfortunate assumption batting around that men who like anal sex are gay. Well, I’m here today to prove them wrong.

Of course, the majority of gay men enjoy anal sex, but it’s by no means limited to that particular segment of the population.

Women, men, and non-binary folk of all sexualities can enjoy anal sex – and there’s no reason why they shouldn’t. If it feels good, do it, I say!

And while a finger, a penis, and a tongue can go a long way in the backdoor department, there are also a ton of tools you can use to unlock the underrated pleasure hub.

But here’s something you might not know: although porn would have you think otherwise, you can’t just dive into using the biggest, girthiest anal dildo on the market.

Full-on penetrative anal sex can take four to six weeks to build up to, according to anal surgeon and founder of Bespoke Surgical, Dr Evan Goldstein, because (duh!) it’s a muscle that requires training just like any other.

So depending on whether you’re an anal aficionado or a backdoor beginner, we’ve rounded up the best anal sex toys for every kind of experience level.

Plus, we’ve consulted a sexologist for her tips on how to use them. Keep reading to find out!

Best anal sex toys at a glance:

What are the types of anal sex toys?

If you’re completely new to backdoor play, you might be wondering the options you have available to you.

Good news is you have a whole smorgasbord to choose from, according to Sofie Roos, sexologist and therapist at Passionerad.

Butt plugs

“Butt plugs are designed to be inserted and worn in place, which gives a feeling of fullness and pressure. It’s also an amazing way to prepare before anal sex.”

“You can buy butt plugs in a variety of sizes, materials and with different features, such as with vibrations for anal orgasms, with tails for roleplaying, with a small diamond in the end.”

Anal dildos

“There are also anal dildos that are designed to penetrate the ass in a safe and comfortable way, often with a slightly bent shape to stimulate the prostate,” says Roos.

Prostate vibrators and anal vibrators

“Other common anal sex toys are prostate vibrators that give P-spot orgasms for men, or general anal vibrators that give a deep and intense feeling,” she says.

Anal beads and hooks

“Anal beads – a series of connected beads that you insert one at a time and then slowly pull out – are also popular,” Roos adds.

“And last but not least, we have anal hooks, which is a sex toy for more advanced BDSM sex that for example let you discover different kinds of bondage.”

What to look for in an anal sex toy

Anal sex is supposed to be fun, but it’s also important to think about safety.

When shopping for an anal sex toy, look for anal-specific toys, and features such as:

  • A wide base: “This is essential for safe usage as it prevents the toy from being inserted too far,” says Roos. “The ass can actually ‘suck’ in toys, and if they don’t have any stopper, you might end up needing to seek medical help.”
  • Safe material: “Medical silicone is soft and gentle, but can only be used with water-based lube, while stainless steel is a bit harder, but can be used with silicone lubricant as well as for temperature play.”
  • Size matters: “Other tips are to go for a small or medium sized toy, as you generally can take less than you think you’re able to, to pick a toy with a tapered tip as it makes it easier to insert, and to think about if you’d like vibrations or not, as well as if you want it to be waterproof.”

Best anal sex toys to shop in 2026

Now that you’re prepared for the kind of thing to look out for, these are HuffPost and Sofie Roos’ recommendations for the best sex toys for anal to shop now. We’ve included recommendations for beginners and practised prostate players alike.

Best small butt plug for beginners

This weeny butt plug is the perfect size for those who have only ever taken a finger up there. It’s only slightly bigger than one of your digits, and has a tapered end so it won’t be too much to take while you’re getting the muscle used to penetration.

It’s non-vibrating, and has a strong suction cup so you can put it on any surface you like – and it’s comfortable to wear for long periods.

+ Small enough for beginners and comfortable enough for aficionados
+ Tapered shape is great for beginners too
+ Discreet and well-designed
– Might not be enough for more practised players.

Type: Butt plug
Features: Comes in a linen storage pouch
Material: Silicone
Power: None
Size: 4.25 x 1.5 inches; 3.5 insertable inches
Waterproof: Yes.

Best vibrating butt plug for beginners

If you’re new to vibrations in your butt plug, this one from Smile Makers is the perfect starter toy. First of all, it’s small and cute, and second of all it’s purple.

Joking, there’s much more to it than that; in fact the base is super flared, so it won’t get sucked into your rectum (nightmare).

Not to mention it’s loaded with a sweet three vibration speeds and two patterns, which is just the right amount to play around with as a newbie, if you ask me.

+ Rechargeable
+ That silicone coating is the perfect texture to slide into your ass
– Can’t use silicone lube with it, though.

Type: Vibrating butt plug
Features: 3 vibration speeds and 2 patterns
Material: Silicone
Power: Rechargeable
Dimensions: 4.4 x 2.4 x 1.2 inches
Waterproof: Yes

Best beginner anal beads

Want to start small? And we mean really small? Well then anal beads are the way to go. This is a marathon, not a race, so if you want to simply pop that smallest end bead in your arse, then you can do that.

Once you’re prepared to go all the way, inserting each anal bead will add some exciting texture into your sexual routine, and the idea is that when you pull them out, the stimulation turboblasts you towards orgasm.

+ Great value for money
+ Ideal if you want to dip your toe in
+ That big loop handle makes for an easy pull
– Beads are quite small so you might want to eventually graduate to a bigger set, or even one that goes in the opposite order

Type: Anal beads
Features: Flexible
Material: PVC
Power: None
Dimensions: 8 insertable inches
Waterproof: Yes.

Best metal butt plug

There’s nothing that could convince me to get into anal more than a bitchy little jewelled butt plug like this. Who doesn’t want to anoint their asshole with a heart-shamed pink gem?

This would be a step up from the likes of the Maude or Rocks Off skinny butt plugs, for when you’re ready to have a bit more girth.

The cool steel will also feel great when it first goes in, and starts to heat up to your body temperature.

+ She’s cute
+ Plenty wide for feelings of fullness
+ Easy to clean
– Not the most exciting other than the appearance

Type: Metal butt plug
Features: None
Material: Stainless steel
Power: None
Dimensions: 3 x 3.5 inches; 2.5 insertable inches
Waterproof: Yes.

Best anal beads for beginners

In yet another example of LELO leading the sex toy game, these anal beads aren’t just regular beads.

Rather, they sit inside your asshole like a plug, and are loaded with LELO’s exclusive technology called BowMotion, which sends the eight vibration settings up and down its length to make it feel like it’s thrusting. But here’s the kicker: it’s not.

Use that loop handle to gradually pull the entire thing out as you reach your climax for an orgasm unlike any other. Promise.

+ Loop handle makes it easy and safe to use
+ It’s gender-neutral
+ Graduated beads means you can insert as much as you like depending on your experience level
– Not the most discreet toy out there.

Type: Vibrating anal beads
Features: 8 vibration modes
Material: Silicone, ABS
Power: Rechargeable
Dimensions: 9.2 x 2.3 x 1.8 inches
Waterproof: Yes.

Best luxury prostate massager

It’s simply unfair that people with vulvas get dual stimulation in the form of rabbit sex toys, and there’s no equivalent for people with penises. Or is there…?

This prostate massager from LELO blends prostate and perineum stimulation, so you can experience blended orgasm at its best.

Depending on your experience level, it’s loaded with six vibration modes that range from a gentle buzz to deep rumble, all of which are controlled by that handy dandy remote that increases intensity at a mere switch of a wrist.

+ Great to use with a partner or solo
+ Not a single inch will go unstimulated
+ The silicone feels seriously luxury
– Quite expensive, but worth it.

Type: Vibrating prostate massager
Features: 6 vibration modes
Material: Silicone
Power: Rechargeable
Dimensions: 4.2 x 1.6 x 4.09 inches with 2.83 insertable inches
Waterproof: Yes.

Best metal anal dildo

While a regular old dildo feels, well, excellent, if you want to turn things up a notch adding some weight to whatever you’re penetrating yourself with will heighten the sensations.

This curved dildo is made entirely from stainless steel, which is also easier to clean than regular silicone, and can heat up or cool down as you like.

The inside is loaded with 939g of weight, so it’ll press against your P- or A-spot. Just make sure you use plenty of lube and don’t let go of the end!

+ Adds a new layer of sensation to your anal play
+ Curved for extra stimulation
– Might be a bit intense for beginners

Type: Stainless steel dildo
Features: Curved and weighted
Material: Stainless steel
Power: None
Dimensions: 22cm
Waterproof: Yes.

Best gender neutral remote-controlled anal toy

Sometimes you’re in the mood to have as much stimulation as possible. If that’s you, slipping this V-shaped toy into your backside while using a clit vibrator or male masturbator will send you into orgasmic orbit.

Each end is loaded with five vibration modes, controlled via that remote control, and the squishy ends make for a great feeling against your skin.

+ Can be used by any gender
+ The texture is great – squishy and ribbed
+ Remote control is easy to use
– Wish it had different controls for each end

Type: Dual stimulation P- or A-spot anal vibrator
Features: 5 vibration modes, remote control
Material: Silicone
Power: Rechargeable
Dimensions: Insertable 3.2 x 1.4 inches
Waterproof: Yes.

Best thrusting butt plug

If you want to stimulate the sensation of being penetrated by a real life, moving penis, this butt plug is loaded with thrusting technology to propel the shaft inside you.

We’re big fans of that large T-base, which will keep it firmly in place while you power up through its five thrusting patterns and four vibration speeds.

So you don’t have to decide on your favourite mode before you insert it, it comes with a remote control so you can climb through the modes towards orgasm.

+ Girthy and plenty of power combinations to choose from
+ Remote is rechargeable too
– Wish you could operate the vibrating and thrusting separately.

Type: Thrusting and vibrating butt plug
Features: 5 thrusting and vibration patterns and 4 vibration speeds
Material: Silicone
Power: Rechargeable
Dimensions: 5.5 inches long; 4.5 insertable inches
Waterproof: Yes, but remote isn’t.

Best butt plug for rimming

If the idea of outer anal stimulation turns you on, this butt plug has rotating beads along its ‘neck’ (okay necklace) to mimic the feeling of a rimjob.

Cover the end in plenty of water-based lube, pop it inside, and choose your favourite combination of rotation and vibration modes to spin you towards orgasm.

If you want someone else to take the reins, it also comes with a remote control so they can decide your destiny.

+ Two kinds of stimulation at once
+ Remote controlled, so great for couples’ play
– Not suitable for beginners.

Type: Rimming and vibrating butt plug
Features: 7 rotation modes and 6 vibration speeds
Material: Silicone, ABS
Power: Rechargeable plug; remote uses 1 x CR2032 battery
Dimensions: 6 x 1.6 inches; 4.9 insertable inches
Waterproof: Splashproof.

Best rotating prostate massager

Now here’s something your partner’s penis can’t do: rotate.

This one comes highly recommended from Sofie Roos, who says: “It’s made out of soft silicone with a perfect shape that when inserted both vibrates and rotates gently directly on the P-spot, this at the same time as it gives love to the perineum, a combination that quickly builds up deep and intense prostate orgasms.”

It can also be controlled either via the included remote control, or your phone, meaning it can be controlled from up to 15 metres away. Win!

+ Power lasts 10 hours
+ A sensation unlike any other prostate massager out ther
– I wish the app worked long-distance

Type: Rotating and vibrating prostate massager
Features: 6 vibration modes and 4 rotation
Material: Silicone
Power: Rechargeable
Dimensions: 3.7 insertable inches
Waterproof: Submersible.

Best long distance butt plug

Finally, a win for long distance lovers! This butt plug can be controlled by an app from anywhere in the world, proving you don’t have to miss out on your sex life just because you’re apart.

Choose from one of its four sizes: one, 1.5, 1.75 or 2.25 inch diameter to match your experience. Then you’ll get access to the whole universe inside the Lovense app, from unlimited customised vibration patterns, to erotic content synced to your toy, or roulette where you can let an anonymous stranger control your orgasm for the evening.

+ Has up to 8 hours of continuous use
+ Flared base for safety
+ Choose the width based on your experience
– Honestly the worst thing we can think of is that there are too many features to play with. Woe is me!

Type: App-controlled vibrating butt plug
Features: Unlimited vibration modes
Material: Silicone
Power: Rechargeable
Dimensions: 1 inch to 2.25 inch diameter; 3.86 to 5.16 inch insertable length
Waterproof: Yes.

Best girthy anal dildo

Sofie Roos recommends the slimmer version of this toy, which unfortunately isn’t available in the UK. However, if you’re into girth, you’re in luck: this thick boy is available to order via Sinful.

“This is an affordable yet luxurious, realistic-feeling, but neutrally looking, soft and hand made anal dildo from the US premium sex toy brand Vixen,” says Roos.

“The dildo has amazing details and is made out of lovely silicone, and it feels almost like a real penis, especially if warming it up in some luke-warm water beforehand.

“It has a solid base that lets you use it safely, and it’s harness-compatible which means that you can use it during strapping, the glans is easy to insert in combination with some lube, and its bent shape stimulates the prostate for men, which can lead to amazing orgasms!”

+ Textured to make it feel realistic
+ Can be used for G-spot, A-spot or P-spot stimulation
– Might be too girthy for some, and not suitable for anal beginners

Type: Anal dildo
Features: 2.2 inch diameter
Material: Silicone
Power: None
Dimensions: 6.9 insertable inches
Waterproof: Yes.

How to prepare for anal sex

Warm up first

“It’s important to remember that the anal requires time and some work to get warmed up and ready for stimulation — it’s not like the penis or vagina which gets ready for pleasurable and safe sex much quicker,” Roos explains.

This doesn’t only mean in the moment, it also means in the weeks and months leading up to having sex, too. Play with a finger or dilator set before you use a sex toy to avoid potentially overstretching your anus, which can lead to injury.

To clean or not to clean

“My best advice is to start with making sure you’re clean,” she says. “Go to the toilet, and you could use an anal douche until the water comes out is clean.”

However, not everyone wants to douche, and that’s okay! Where there’s smoke there’s fire, they say, and when there’s anal, there’s going to be a little poop. Don’t panic.

We’ll admit that’s not the sexiest thing, so if you’d prefer to not have that in mind, go ahead and douche.

“Knowing that you won’t make a mess not only makes it easier to relax, which is very important, but also makes it more pleasurable as there’s no poop in the way for the toy,” says Roos.

Lube and condoms

“Always, always, always use tons of lube, way more than you think you’ll need, and re-apply during the session,” Roos recommends.

“As the anal canal doesn’t produce any natural lubrication, you must use a lot, both on the toy itself and around the anus.”

It’s worth investing in a good one, too. “Silicone-based lubes are best, but if you’re using a sex toy made out of silicone, or a condom, then go for a water- based option instead,” Roos says.

Condom

If you’re using a dildo, you might want to a use a condom, too, as this will reduce the amount of clear up you have to do and stop infections from spreading if you’re sharing it with a partner.

“Also avoid sharing the anal toy with a partner if not using a condom that you change between the partner swapping,” Roos says. “If you’d like to switch between vaginal and anal usage, then always wear a condom that you change, and ideally also clean it before going between the holes.”

Just remember if you’re using a condom you can’t use oil-based lube.

Go slow

When you’re ready to play, don’t shove anything in if it doesn’t feel comfortable. It’s important to have anal sex in the most relaxed environment possible, and listen to your body.

“Begin carefully by slowly and steadily inserting a small buttplug or anal dildo to make the sphincter relax, while you do your best to relax,” Roos advises.

“Give it time and don’t stress, which is why I recommend choosing a moment where you have plenty of time on you.

“For most people, it feels easier to start exploring anal sex toys on your own to get familiar with the feeling, so I recommend newbies to start during masturbation.

“You can also use a mirror if you’d like to see what’s going on down there, which can feel both sexy and safer.”

FAQs about anal sex toys

Who is anal sex for?

“Anal sex toys can be used by both men and women, straight and queer people, singles and people in a relationship,” clarifies Roos.

“People who are interested in discovering new types of sexual pleasure, who want to stimulate their prostate, who enjoy the feeling of getting filled, who want to prepare for penetrative anal sex or who’d like to make the sex more dynamic are examples of folks that anal sex toys are for.”

Who should not have anal sex?

“If you are experiencing painful hemorrhoids, have anal fissures, are recovering from a surgery in the area, experiencing rectal pain or bleeding, or have an active infection, you must wait until your condition gets better, and ideally consult your doctor before investing in ass toys and start using them,” says Roos.

“And remember that if you feel uncomfortable during usage, or if it leads to pain or bleeding, then stop immediately. Safety always comes first.”

How do you clean anal sex toys?

You must clean anal sex toys before and after using them, and if you’re sharing with a partner, clean them between uses, too.

You can do this using warm soap and water, or with a sex toy cleaner.

Will Ricky Gervais’ Alley Cats Get A Season 2 On Netflix?

Will Ricky Gervais' Alley Cats Get A Season 2 On Netflix?

It might not always have been for the reasons a creator would want, but Ricky Gervais’ new comedy Alley Cats has been one of the most talked-about TV shows around for the last couple of weeks.

The animated Netflix sitcom centres around a group of surly, foul-mouthed cats living on the streets of London, featuring an all-star cast who’ve lent their voices to the show.

Upon its release, Alley Cats was absolutely slated by critics, with a smattering of one- and even zero-star reviews going in on everything from its humour to its general tone – a stark contrast to the acclaim Ricky has become accustomed to for his TV shows like The Office, Extras and After Life.

Meanwhile, the man himself has jumped to the defence of his latest comedy creation, hitting back at critics on social media, while pointing out that in the days after its release, it sprung to the top of Netflix’s most-watched chart (at the time of writing, in the UK, it has fallen to number four, behind the new episodes of My Life With The Walter Boys and documentaries about cult leader Charles Manson and football legend José Mourinho).

As a result of its apparent popularity with Netflix users, some may now be speculating whether a second run of episodes could be on the cards.

Will there be a season 2 of Alley Cats on Netflix?

Well, Netflix hasn’t actually confirmed or denied whether Alley Cats will be returning at the moment, although Ricky has previously made clear that he’d like the show to run and run.

“It’s the first thing I’ve ever created that I’d like to go on forever. I can see myself just making this show till I die,” he said in a YouTube video days after the series premiered.

He pointed out: “The cats won’t age and it doesn’t matter how fat and old and bald I get. Someone can just put me in a chair with a microphone, surrounded by the rest of the cast, and off we go.

“It won’t really matter when senility kicks in as I’m usually talking bollocks anyway. It’s the dream job.”

As for whether or not Netflix would actually greenlight more episodes, that remains to be seen.

While on one thing, you might think the scathing reviews would be a deterrent, Netflix has repeatedly given multiple seasons to projects that have failed to impress critics, while a string of others have been axed in their prime despite glowing receptions.

It’s also probably worth keeping in mind that Ricky has an existing relationship with Netflix, having previously collaborated with the streaming giant on his award-winning series After Life, recently voted the best comedy of modern times by Radio Times, as well as numerous stand-up comedy specials.

Regardless of what happens next, Ricky has made it clear that he stands by Alley Cats, and has claimed that he’s “never been so happy” as he was to see it topping Netflix’s most-watched shows chart.

Why I would NEVER eat low-fat food: As a veteran restaurant reviewer, you’d think TOM PARKER BOWLES would eat anything. But here he reveals the things that will never pass his lips… for very good reason

Published

on

Tom Parker Bowles, food writer and critic, dishes the dirt on his least favourite foods

This is frankly a book of prejudices,’ thunders P. Morton Shand in the preface to his 1927 classic A Book Of Food, ‘for all food is a question of likes and dislikes. One may be tolerant about religion, politics, and a hundred and one other things, but not about the food one eats.’ Amen to that.

Because there is nothing more personal and subjective than what you put into your mouth. One man’s honey is another man’s tripe, and your choice of food is an insight into your very soul.

‘Tell me what you eat,’ declared Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, French lawyer, politician and committed trencherman, ‘and I’ll tell you what you are.’

You could turn celibate, dodge taxes, even take up Morris dancing. But you’ll always have to eat.

Tastes change as we age, and ingredients that were once the very definition of disgust – snot-like oysters, say, or olives, with their resolutely savoury sneer – gradually become much adored adult staples.

I’ll eat pretty much anything (save British Airways food), but I just don’t get goat’s cheese. I want to love it, to frolic among the Dorstones and Bûcherons, but to me it will always taste like licking the farmyard floor, all musty feral filth.

Tom Parker Bowles, food writer and critic, dishes the dirt on his least favourite foods

I have one friend who hates mushrooms, another who can’t stand tomatoes (although he loves ketchup) and one more who won’t touch lamb. There really is no accounting for taste.

Which is why the list below is an attempt to cut a swathe through the thickets of marketing hyperbole and come to some form of palatable truth.

I hate sanctimony and finger- wagging as much as the next man, and am as happy eating a McDonald’s cheeseburger as I am the most gilded Michelin-star creation. No one likes a food snob. But there are some things I won’t touch for reasons ethical and moral. As well as a few things I just can’t bear.

Foie Gras

Gavage is the force-feeding of corn or maize to ducks and geese via a metal tube shoved down their throats. The aim is to swell their livers up to ten times the usual size. Hence foie gras, or ‘fatty liver’.

In many cases, the birds are crammed in tiny cages, unable even to stretch their wings. It’s pretty difficult to defend.

I did used to eat it, and have heard tales of happy Gascon birds actually following their horny-handed farmer around, desperate for their next hit of grain. But that seems to be the exception rather than the rule.

There are also companies that claim to produce an ‘ethical’ version. But no delicacy is worth that amount of suffering, and so I give foie gras a very firm miss.

Mackerel

One of my favourite fish, all gleaming iridescent skin and sweet, rich flesh. But although not officially endangered, stocks in the north-east Atlantic are plummeting. Waitrose, in an admirable move, has stopped stocking it, replacing it with the ever undervalued herring. For an alternative, try Cornish sardines.

Fake meat

There was a time a few years back when the catchily named ‘vegan plant-based meat alternatives’ were set to conquer the earth, putting an end to meat‑eating once and for all.

The usual venture capital firms all piled in to the likes of Beyond Burger, This Isn’t Bacon Rashers, La Vie and I Am Nut OK. And by 2022, sales reached a staggering £1billion.

But then the hype wore off, the decline set in and everyone realised quite how vile these ‘foods’ were. My issue is not with veganism itself, rather these nefarious atrocities which have all the culinary appeal of burnt rubber.

And it’s not as if they are the healthy alternative to meat. In fact, most are every bit as fake and processed as any Pot Noodle or cheap hotdog.

The average ingredient list includes the likes of ‘textured pea protein’ and ‘pea protein isolate’, the ‘thickeners’ that include methylcellulose, konjac, carrageenan and xanthan gum, ‘natural flavouring’, ‘dextrose’, ‘colour (beetroot red)’ and casings made from ‘sodium alginate’.

My favourite pork chipolata from HG Walter, on the other hand, is made from 90 per cent free-range British pork, breadcrumbs, salt, herbs, and spices. I know which one I’d prefer.

Intensively farmed meat

The horrors of factory farming are all too clear. Broiler chickens (farmed for meat) bred to grow unnaturally fast and slaughtered at six weeks old, having been confined to cramped, stinking sheds devoid of natural light, the air polluted with irritant ammonia and barely the space to flap their wings.

They spend much of their time on the floor, not moving, as their legs are barely strong enough to support their heavy body. This unnatural growth also puts strain on their hearts and lungs, and millions of chickens die of heart attacks every year.

It’s the same with pigs, crammed into sheds with salted concrete floors, often without even hay for bedding and rooting. Again, there’s no natural light, and no access to outdoor space.

Highly intelligent, social beasts, these pigs become bored and frustrated, fighting and biting each other. Which means that most piglets have their teeth cut and tails docked.

If the label doesn’t say ‘free-range’ or ‘organic’ you can bet your bottom dollar the wretched beast has been raised in less than happy conditions.

Good quality, ethically produced meat will always cost more. I know it’s all very well as an over- privileged food writer telling you to eat a £20 chicken, but one superior bird doesn’t just give you dinner, but sandwiches and stock, too.

I do believe we should eat less meat, and better quality. Trust your butcher, who should be only too happy to tell you exactly where your meat comes from.

And don’t just go for chicken breasts and sirloin steaks. Chicken thighs have more flavour than breast, while shin of beef and oxtail, classic slow-cooking cuts, make for magnificent eating and are cheaper, too.

Again, ask your butcher for their advice. Happy, outdoor-bred pigs and chickens will always make for much better eating. For more information on the horrors of factory farming, go to ciwf.org.uk.

‘Low-fat’ anything

I love fat. Fat is flavour. Fat is life. So no, I don’t want my yoghurt or cheese anything other than full strength. As for skimmed milk – get thee away, you lily-livered Satan.

Hot honey

OK, enough now. I like honey, I love chilli, and when it first came out I sort of understood its appeal. But now it’s bloody everywhere, like a fierily sticky virus, drizzled (urgh) over pizzas, burgers, fried chicken, ice cream. You’ve had your moment in the sun – it’s time to retire to the back of the cupboard of food fads long past.

Margarine

There is never, ever any excuse to choose margarine over butter. If I had my way, I’d take it out to the back of the house, offer it one last cigarette, then shoot it in the back of the head. Good riddance to a hateful spread.

Tasting menus

Ah, the tyranny of the tasting menu. Once the very pinnacle of the heady haute cuisine experience, with up to 40 courses of post-modern culinary trickiness, they are now my idea of hell. It is not that the artistry is lacking (and places like The Ritz and The Ledbury still dazzle), rather the thought of being pinned to one’s chair for over three hours as dish after dish is gushingly explained at great length as if it were some rare and wonderful piece of art.

Yes, The Fat Duck, Noma and El Bulli were all huge fun, often bonkersly brilliant. Although with a glass of wine with each course, I was usually so sozzled by the end that I could barely manage speech, let alone remember the previous 20 courses. Anyway, give me three old-fashioned courses and I’m a happy man.

Whilst places like The Ritz and The Ledbury still dazzle, the thought of being pinned to one¿s chair for over three hours is excruciating

Too much information

In any decent restaurant, one assumes all the meat will be ethically raised. If you’re particularly taken by a certain cut or joint, you can ask your waiter for more information. What I don’t need to read on the menu is their life history, including the field it comes from, its star sign and favourite member of One Direction.

Fake ‘allergies’ and intolerances

Genuine food allergies should be treated with the utmost respect, as they can be a matter of life or death. The same goes for those with Coeliac disease. What is not to be taken seriously is people who claim gluten ‘intolerance’ because they think bread makes them fat. Or claim they’re allergic to celery, say, when it turns out they just don’t like it. It’s needy, fussy and annoying for chefs and those actually afflicted by genuine allergies.

Truffle oil

An age-old bugbear, this base and horrible unguent has all the subtlety and elegance of a wet haddock slapped across one’s face. Noxious and predominantly artificially flavoured, truffle oil ruins everything it touches. It’s not big, it’s not sophisticated and it sure ain’t clever.

Genuine truffles are truly blessed tubers. The black Perigord truffle is all about flavour and the Alba white intoxicates with its heady scent. Truffle oil, on the other hand, is a dumb, aggressive brute with all the culinary sophistication of a battered saveloy.

Dill

I know, I know, dill is the much-loved star of many of the great cuisines of the world. But I can’t stand the stuff, and can taste even the tiniest hidden frond. It’s not so much a herb as a great, swaggering green-tressed thug.

Small plates

Yes, I have heard of your cutting-edge new concept. The Spanish have been at it for years, as has much of the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East. The clue is in the name, and, yes, I do know they’re for sharing.

Farmed salmon

I wrote at length on the subject a few weeks back and still avoid the stuff like the plague. Too many fish crammed into too little water, fed on fundamentally unsustainable pellets while being plagued by sea lice that can literally eat them alive.

To control sea lice, chemicals that can devastate the local seabed are needed. Farmed fish also escape and breed with the increasingly rare wild salmon stock, diluting its genetic resistance.

Mortality rates can be staggeringly high, and pollution from the farms, thick and stinking, ends up coating the sea floor. The end result (flabby, fatty and dull) is, on the whole, a sorry shadow of its wild cousin.

That said, I did receive an invitation from Tavish Scott, chief executive of Salmon Scotland, inviting me to come and see the farms for myself. I will report back.

Flight disaster averted after two jets with SAME flight number spared from almost-certain collision

Published

on

If both pilots thought the controller was telling them to fly at the same altitude as they headed toward each other, they might have collided

A potential disaster was averted after an Arizona air traffic controller recognized that two jets were mistakenly flying on the same flight number.

The near miss happened in the early hours of Friday morning when a pair of American Airlines planes under the same call sign and on the same frequency spoke with the controller as one arrived into Phoenix and another was leaving.

Thankfully, the quick thinking controller recognized the confusion, and urged the two jets to keep a safe distance.

If both pilots thought the controller was telling them to fly at the same altitude as they headed toward each other, they might have collided, so it was crucial they knew which plane he was directing, The Associated Press reported.

Audio of the incident captured the controller saying: ‘I’ve been working air traffic for 25 years. I’ve never seen two aircraft pretty much merge with the same call sign. That’s incredible.’

In the audio, shared by ATC.com, the controller started referring to the two as ‘American 2482 on the arrival,’ and ‘American 2482 on the departure’ to keep the two planes straight.

The controller kept the arriving plane safely above the departing plane even as their flight paths converged, and made sure that the pilots of both airlines saw each other when they were still miles apart.

He also directed the departing plane not to climb too high, so a gap would remain between the planes.

The arriving pilot complimented the controller for his ‘nice work’ once the two planes had passed each other safely.

‘It could have been disastrous, but I’m glad it worked out,’ the controller replied.

Aviation safety expert Steve Arroyo told the AP that it’s likely that someone inside the airline’s dispatch center failed to catch that both planes would be in the air at the same time with identical flight numbers when both the dispatcher and the pilots signed off on the flight plan.

‘You can drop the ball and that shouldn’t happen, but it’s nice to see that the system is resilient and we have all the safeguards,’ said Arroyo, who has only seen this type of issue a couple times in his four decades with United Airlines. Arroyo started his career as a dispatcher before becoming a pilot.

Flight 2482 is a round-trip route that often flies back and forth between Chicago and Phoenix.

Typically, the same plane goes back and forth, but the flight out of Chicago was delayed by weather, so American found a second plane in Phoenix and that flight left on time.

The result was that both planes briefly shared the same airspace before the arriving flight landed.

The Federal Aviation Administration and American Airlines will investigate how this happened, and they both emphasized how glad they were that everyone remained safe.

‘The diligence and professionalism of air traffic controllers and our pilots ensured required separation was always maintained and the issue was identified and addressed. Both flights continued safely and without incident,’ American Airlines said in a statement.

James Norton, from Ryedale, rules out next James Bond role

James Norton, from Ryedale, rules out next James Bond role

The Happy Valley star, 41, is one of many actors who has been rumoured for the role since Daniel Craig confirmed No Time To Die – released in 2021 – would be his final outing as 007.

Speaking on Capital Breakfast, James was asked: “How many times have you been asked (about James Bond)?”

He replied: “I’ve been asked a thousand times over the last 10 years. And I can honestly, hand on heart, say no. I think I may be a little bit long in the tooth now.”

James, who has played wide-ranging parts from a serial killer to village vicar, had his first experience of films at The Palace cinema in Malton and his first taste of fame when photos of his school play appeared in the Gazette & Herald.

Brought up near Malton, James attended Amotherby Primary School from the age of four where his inspiration to become an actor first started.

Speaking to the Gazette & Herald last year, James said he very happy there and remember getting the bus two or three miles down the road to school every morning,” he said.

He said: “I remember being there when I was just four years old and it’s bizarre but we were going to do the school Nativity when something happened in my head and I desperately wanted to play Joseph.

“I put my heart and soul into that role and from that moment I did every school production they put on.”

With James getting the acting bug he expanded his talents to by joining the Livewire Theatre Group in Butterwick run by Mary Tait.

“It was there that I did my very first play and had my first taste of theatre,” James added.

“Then at the age of 15, I went to the Stephen Joseph Theatre (SJT) in Scarborough on work experience for three weeks.

“While I was there I got to work behind the scenes in everything from production to the costume department.

“It was such an amazing opportunity and I think that sealed it for me that this was the world I wanted to be in.”

In 2023, James returned the favour the SJF had given him by becoming its new patron and in December 2025, he returned to Scarborough to host an “in conversation” event about his life at the venue.

He said: “To come back full circle was really nice. The venue was really important as part of my journey into this mad industry.

“The theatre as a really, really good outreach programme is the only producing theatre in North Yorkshire, which is a sad reflection on the state of regional theatre.”

“But, it is an amazing building, with amazing heritage and history. I love it.”

“I have a lot of love for Ryedale and of course, a lot of love for the Gazette & Herald. It is the first paper I ever read and one I featured in whenever I happened to be photographed while at primary school.”

A device called a speedscope can be trained on vehicles up to 1,000m away

GoSafe, Wales’ road casualty reduction partnership, has mapped out the latest locations of mobile speed cameras across the country. Marked vans and motorcycles are manned by fully-trained police staff or police officers who monitor the speed of passing vehicles.

Once they form the opinion that a vehicle is exceeding the speed limit they use equipment to record it – often resulting in prosecution.

A device called a speedscope can be trained on vehicles up to 1,000m away although most work is carried out far closer, GoSafe has said. Stay in the know by making sure you’re receiving our daily newsletter.

The time, date, speed, distance, site coding, and whether the vehicle is travelling towards or away from the checkpoint is recorded on the image to produce to the offending driver. The partnership publishes the exact locations of the mobile cameras on its website for the public to view.

Here is the latest information it has provided on its website.

Karoline Leavitt’s face says it all as she breaks cover after her shock resignation

Karoline Leavitt appeared forlorn as she accompanied Donald Trump just hours after announcing she will quit the White House in a move that stunned Washington

Karoline Leavitt cut an exhausted figure alongside Donald Trump a day after announcing she is quitting the White House at the end of the month, a decision that stunned Washington.

The 28-year-old press secretary was at the President’s side on Friday as he traveled to New York to speak at a police academy.

She stood and watched as Trump addressed reporters at Joint Base Andrews before the pair boarded Air Force One.

Leavitt held her poker face as the press pack jostled around her boss. But she glanced back down toward the photographers as she climbed the stairs to the aircraft, her expression appearing to betray a flicker of regret.

Leavitt announced on Thursday that she was leaving the White House to devote more time to her young family, a decision understood to have frustrated Trump, who had begged her to stay.

She is among the President’s closest confidantes and had been expected to play a central role in the midterm campaign, with the election less than three months away.

Leavitt returned from maternity leave only last month after giving birth to her daughter in May, her second child in the space of two years.

She came back early at the insistence of the President, sources told the Daily Mail.

Should working mothers in powerful roles be expected to sacrifice family for their careers?

No replacement has been announced, although Trump’s former lawyer Alina Habba is the odds-on favorite with bookmakers.

Leavitt admitted it was a ‘bittersweet decision,’ calling it ‘the most rewarding yet challenging season of my life, to say the least.’

‘The truth is since returning to the White House after the birth of my daughter, I have felt in my heart that I cannot be the best mom my two young children deserve while devoting the constant time, energy, and attention required of the White House Press Secretary – and that is why I have ultimately made the bittersweet decision to depart the White House and embark on a new chapter in my life,’ she wrote on X.

Trump posted on Truth Social that it was ‘a decision I totally understand and respect’, calling Leavitt ‘one of the best White House press secretaries in the history of the office.’

The President said Leavitt would remain a ‘top outside adviser’ and an ‘influential voice’ at the top of the Republican Party as the White House gears up for crunch midterm elections in November.

Leavitt is known for her tenacity at the podium in the White House briefing room, frequently mirroring the behavior of her boss in attacking ‘fake news’ journalists and dishing out tongue lashings to any reporter who dares to cross the administration.

She entered Trump’s orbit in 2018 during the first administration, first as a presidential writer and then as an assistant White House press secretary.

Leavitt worked as communications director for New York representative Elise Stefanik, a close Trump ally, from 2021 to 2022.

She joined Trump’s re-election campaign as a national press secretary in 2024 and was announced as White House Press Secretary on his return to the Oval Office.

If Leavitt does return to work, she is likely to have her pick of high-profile roles in Republican politics, conservative media and political communications.

Leavitt has a two-year-old son, Niko, and a three-month-old daughter, Vivi, with her real estate developer husband, Nicholas Riccio, 60, whom she married in January last year.

Leavitt’s resignation comes just two weeks after one of her top deputies, Abigail Jackson, left the White House for the private sector.

As Sally lays down the ground rules for the trip, Lucy comes downstairs ranting about how unfair it is that she isn’t allowed to see her dad when Joanie and Shanice get to visit Mick.

When she complains that she should at least be allowed to talk to him, Tim assures her that she’ll be able to as soon as social services give her the okay, which Lucy can’t see happening any time soon.

As Lucy storms off, Sally tells Tim to go shopping alone while she tries to calm Lucy down.
