The I’m A Celebrity… South Africa hosts have opened up on the show’s live final after it descended into chaos on Friday night
I’m A Celebrity… South Africa hosts Ant and Dec have revealed what really happened when they ran into Jimmy Bullard and David Haye in the studio car park after the series’ heated live final.
The finale, which took place in London on Friday night after the rest of the show was filmed in South Africa last year, descended into chaos amid an explosive row between campmates. Waterloo Road actor Adam Thomas – who was crowned the new ‘Jungle Legend’ – was at the heart of the drama alongside former champion boxer David Haye and ex-Premier League footballer Jimmy Bullard.
Earlier in the series, Thomas had clashed with Bullard in furious scenes during a trial, while Haye had been accused of bullying the actor throughout the show.
During the final, Haye confronted Thomas from the audience and demanded ITV showed the full footage of what happened in South Africa, before Bullard echoed those same concerns and accused the actor of “abusive, aggressive and intimidating” behaviour.
Both of the ex-sportsmen – who are both believed to be preparing to take legal action against ITV – were then seen talking to Ant and Dec outside the studio following the final, with various reports suggesting that the former was “flanked by security” as he came face-to-face with the two campmates.
However, speaking on their Hanging Out podcast, the presenting legends have revealed what really happened after the show, with Ant explaining: “We left separately, I went first and I saw David Haye standing in the car park.
“There were two people in the car park, David Haye and Jimmy Bullard. I thought ‘Oh God, how’s your luck?’
“So anyway, I went up to David Haye and he was like: ‘How brilliant was that? Wasn’t that great?’. I was like, ‘Well… it was certainly talked-about TV. I wouldn’t call it great’.
“But anyway, we had a laugh, and we were cool, and then I walked off and saw Jimmy Bullard. I just shook his hand and said, ‘Look after yourself,’ and he was like, ‘Yeah, yeah, cheers, cheers, cheers.’
“So there was no confrontation. He wasn’t shouting at me, I wasn’t shouting at him. I wasn’t flanked by two security guards as it said in the paper. One of them was carrying my bags to the car in a Beyonce style! But I saw Jimmy and went over to Jimmy, so there was no argument between us two in the car park.”
Dec then added: “I saw David Haye on the way out and he said ‘What about that then? Hope you get some good ratings for that one’.”
Ant replied: “See, he doesn’t care. That’s what he does, he’s a boxer, that’s his stock in trade. The calling out from the audience. He’s used to it.”
As for Bullard’s behaviour on the show, Dec said: “It turned out that Jimmy wanted his full pay. It was unfortunate that he threw Adam under the bus… although he didn’t care that he was throwing Adam under the bus.
“He was going to call ‘I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here’, he wanted to get paid, Adam was collateral damage and the fact that Adam got angry at him for that, well Jimmy took exception to that… which feels kind of weird to me.”
Ant replied: “The whole thing was weird to me which is why, on the night, I said I disagreed with him, quite firmly.
“I just felt it was a shame the crowning moment of I’m A Celebrity… South Africa couldn’t have been more celebratory,” he added. “If anything, remember it for Craig Charles having a bath in the washing-up bowl – that’s how I’ll remember it.”
