Arsenal win ugly to take advantage as Manchester City drop points to Forest

Arsenal win ugly to take advantage as Manchester City drop points to Forest

It was tense. On the touchline Hürzeler and Arteta exchanged words and even when it was announced there would be just three minutes of added time, in a half which had been stop-start, that led to more boos from the Brighton supporters.

Remarkably Arsenal were in front with an XG – expected goals – of just 0.01 (for that Saka shot). But they had that precious lead and marshalling by Gabriel, taking on even more responsibility in the absence of the injured William Saliba, they had been defensively sound enough. Even if Brighton had undeniably been the better team.

In midfield it was a struggle for Arsenal. Declan Rice had recovered, having had to come off against Chelsea, but both he and his central partner, in particular, Martin Zubimendi look desperately in need of a rest – which hopefully Saturday’s FA Cup tie against League One Mansfield Town will afford them. Surely Arteta has to trust Christian Norgaard more?

Brighton’s dominance continued but they were struggling to create opportunities with passes and crosses over-hit even though it felt like they were in control. After Saka blazed over, after doing well to work some space, Arteta acted with a double change: on came Kai Havertz and, maybe, to rile the home support even more, Leandro Trossard.

Before that Raya was finally extended, diving low to repel Rutter’s half-volley after which he went down injured claiming he had hurt his shoulder. It was the second injury he had “suffered” leading to chants of “cheat, cheat, cheat”.

Brighton went close. Substitute Yankuba Minteh worked his way to the byline with his low cross deflected behind. It could have gone anywhere. Then Mats Wieffer headed weakly into Raya’s arms.

Arsenal needed to stabilise and did through pressure of their own, earning corners and forcing Brighton back and forcing an error from Baleba. Substitute Kai Havertz had a run at goal but the midfielder recovered and blocked.

For Brighton Jack Hinshelwood’s final involvement was to badly miscue a header, high over the crossbar, when he was well-placed to equalise. He gave way to Danny Welbeck.

At the other end and maybe Trossard should have settled it only to slice badly wide, leaving Arteta with his face in his hands as the tension unsurprisingly grew, the fatigue kicked in and more substitutions were made.

Havertz could have ended Brighton’s resistance but Verbruggen saved and the seven minutes of added time were met with cheers from Brighton.

“Arsenal, Arsenal,” implored their fans, fully aware of the score in Manchester and as Brighton laid a late desperate siege. The boos were there again at the final whistle. As were Arsenal’s celebrations, even more when the City score came through.

GP and Press columnist Dr Zak died after cliff fall

Zakariya Waqar-Uddin, who was known as Dr Zak, went missing from his home in Lancashire and was found at the foot of Huntcliff in Saltburn nine days later on May 21. He was just 44.

Dr Zakariya had previously written a weekly health column in The Press, and tributes poured in following his death.

The inquest heard he had travelled to Teesside, where he had a flat up for sale.

His family reported him missing when they did not hear from him, and coastguard teams discovered his body on May 21.

An inquest at Teesside Coroners’ Court heard how Dr Zakariya died from multiple injuries due to a fall from a height.

His mother Patricia Waqar-Uddin described her son as “charming, helpful, and very compassionate to all who he met”.

He had “no airs and graces” despite his successful career and was the “best son any parents could ever hope for in life”, she said.

The inquest on Tuesday (March 3) heard how he had previously suffered from stress following the breakdown of his marriage and the dissolution of his GP partnership.

However, there was no mention of any mental health concerns when he spoke with a dermatologist two months before his death.

After he was reported missing, a search was launched across Teesside after his dark purple VW Touran was found.

Dr Zak was identified through his dental records and there were no significant toxicology findings, a report confirmed.

Dr Zak’s former partner Laura Jane Dunning, whom he married in October 2016 and shared a daughter, Jasmine, told the inquest: “I am distraught and I am very sad that Jasmine has lost her father. She will continue to be loved and cherished and I know she will make him extremely proud.

“I hope Zak found his peace and I thank him for the many happy times we had together.”

During the inquest, Coroner Bailey had to consider whether Dr Zak had intended to take his own life, but this was ruled out.

Ms Waqar-Uddin said her son had not been agitated when he left his home and she did not believe he intended to take his own life.

She said there was no communication about intent left at his home and that he was also applying for jobs: “He had too many plans for the future.”

Coroner Bailey recorded a narrative conclusion, saying : “Dr Zak was found dead at the bottom of Huntcliff in Saltburn on May 21. It is not known how or when he exited the top of Huntcliff.”

In a statement, Ms Waqar-Uddin said Dr Zak treated his patients with the “same care and respect he gave to his family”.

She said: “He often spoke of the joy and satisfaction being a GP brought to him.

“To us he was the best son any parents could ever hope for in life and we will miss him deeply for the rest of our lives.

“He was grateful to his youngest brother Yusuf for the love and support he extended to him.

“He cared and loved his daughter Jasmine but missed her greatly.”

The 13 best ski base layers, reviewed by experts

The 13 best ski base layers, reviewed by experts

Swedish brand Fjällräven has leapt headlong into skiing for this season, and the Bergtagen base layer long sleeve top and long john bottom are a great complement to its equally impressive ski mid layers and outerwear. It’s all initials here, with LS denoting long sleeve, LJ meaning long johns, and M standing for male, though they make W versions too.

These pure merino base layers have a clean design without the clutter of flaps and loops. Merino, as you may have gathered, is a bit of a wonder material, when it comes to next-to-skin fabric. It helps regulate the clothing’s internal climate, including moisture and heat management. Thanks to how it deals with bacteria, it doesn’t hold onto nasty odours, either.

The waist band looks fairly basic on the pant, but it is incredibly comfortable and doesn’t leave you feeling squeezed in the middle. The pant also has a relaxed fit, adding to the comfort, although we wish they offered this in a 3/4 length model. The 190g fabric is lighter than most others we tested, but the 100 per cent merino construction delivers good warmth. The top has a comparably relaxed cut and, like the pant, feels fantastically soft when you’re wearing it, with an excellent drape.

One surprising aspect is how slippery the surface of this kit is. This, along with the moderate stretch and forgiving fit, means I never felt any restriction at all in my movements, even with more than one layer over these, as they slid inside the other garments beautifully.

Key specifications

  • Material: 100% merino wool, excluding decoration
  • Thumb loops: No
  • Pant length options: Full length only
  • Women’s and men’s models available: Yes
  • Other colours available: Black

Motorhome parking ban signs thrown ‘over the cliff within hours’

Published

Clash over overnight motorhome parking ban in Scarborough and Whitby

North Yorkshire Council’s plan to permanently prohibit the overnight parking of motor caravans in Sandsend and North Bay in Scarborough has divided councillors and members of the public alike.

An Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO) was introduced to restrict overnight parking at Sandsend, Royal Albert Drive, and Cayton Bay after NYC said the number of motorhomes had reached an “unacceptable level”.

However, the council’s consultation on the future of the ban has met with an “overwhelming” number of objections.

Cllr Roberta Swiers, who represents Cayton, said the trial had “obviously not been a success” and recounted how signs notifying motorhome users of the ban were ripped down.

“The signs that were put up were ripped down within hours and thrown over the cliff,” she told a meeting of the Scarborough and Whitby Area Committee on March 2.

“So think of the cost of those alone, to be put up and cemented in, only for the same thing to happen before the cement dried, with the signs thrown down the cliffs again. It’s actually vandalism.”

Richard Marr, area highways manager for North Yorkshire Council, confirmed that “the plan to carry out the [parking] experiment down Cayton Bay failed due to repeated vandalism and difficulties with getting the signing put up for a period long enough to carry out the experiment”.

NYC will only be able to use data gathered from Sandsend and North Bay when it makes a decision on the future of the ban next month.

At the area committee meeting, coastal councillors debated the effectiveness of the scheme, with some stating it had been a success while others said it had displaced the issue of parking to residential streets, resulting in thousands more complaints.

Cllr Swiers suggested that “the only result that we can get, certainly in this area and perhaps in other areas, is to use these Park and Rides, make it official, and direct motorhome users to them.”

“If you’re going to pay a small amount, surely that would be better as you would know your motorhome will be safe to a much greater degree than leaving it on a cliffside.”

She added: “We have to do something because I’m in for a right summer again. I was actually looking forward to a quiet year last year and that didn’t happen.

“It was worse because people who were on the Cleveland Way walking path were getting verbally abused by the people in the caravans and the motorhomes.”

Mr Marr, highways manager, noted: “There are plans to examine how we identify impacted locations, and rather than a piecemeal approach that pushes parking to the next street, we are considering a wider view to how we deal with motorhomes across the county”.

“We need to consider this with the council’s tourism department, because there’s quite a strong demand from the motorhome caravan fraternity and there are many benefits as well”.

Councillors echoed that they did not want Scarborough to have a reputation of being “anti-motorhome because they bring money and investment and we do need to ask, where will they go”.

Bruno Fernandes’ feelings clear on Michael Carrick scrapping controversial Ruben Amorim rule

Published

on

Manchester Evening News

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has addressed the differences between playing for Michael Carrick and ex-boss Ruben Amorim

Bruno Fernandes has claimed that the freedom Michael Carrick has afforded his Manchester United players is improving their performances on the pitch. Carrick succeeded Ruben Amorim in an interim capacity after the Portuguese head coach was sacked in January.

Amorim was understood to have governed his players at Old Trafford with strict rules. The 41-year-old even banned food from the dressing room after emphasising the need to improve fitness standards.

United’s new man in charge is believed to have dismantled that policy by turning the club’s changing room into a more communal space where players can freely express themselves. The faith he has shown in his squad is paying off, with United now well-placed in the race for Champions League spots.

Carrick also served as caretaker manager between November and December 2021, following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure. Fernandes discussed how the ex-England star has built on his first spell in charge, suggesting the players now feel they’re being treated like adults, in contrast to Amorim’s micromanagement of their daily routines.

“This is football, football changes from one game to the other,” Fernandes told TNT Sports following United’s 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in February.

“I think Michael [Carrick] came in with the right ideas of giving the players the responsibility, but also some freedom to take the responsibility on the pitch during the decisions that are needed.

“He’s very good with words and I think he still remembers when I told him last time he was our manager, for our last game, and I was sure Michael could be a great manager and now he is showing it.”

Amorim endured a rotten 14-month spell at United, winning only 24 of his 63 games in charge across all competitions. He also lost the Europa League final to Spurs last season.

The former Sporting CP manager’s average of 1.23 points per game is the worst of any United manager since the Premier League began. Under Carrick, the transformation has been clear, with Fernandes excelling.

Amorim also reportedly sent players home straight after fixtures, usually without any imparting words. This was done to let emotions dissipate before making knee-jerk decisions, instead relaying his thoughts to players the following day.

Carrick has reportedly introduced a new philosophy whereby players must not leave the dressing room until they feel they have been spoken to and heard.

United’s Portuguese captain believes Carrick’s experience of playing for the club, between 2006 and 2018, has helped him understand what it takes to line up for one of the biggest teams on the planet.

“We hope we can help him even more so everyone can see, not just us as the players, that we are good players and that is why we are at Manchester United, but also the staff is very good,” Fernandes added.

“This is a massive club and everyone knows the expectations around it. I don’t think that changes but of course Michael has won everything here and he knows what it means to these fans and for the club to win. So much is needed to win in this football club and I think that is something special for this team.”

M60 car fire road closure and M61 bridge crash delays

Just before 11am, a car caught fire on the M60 clockwise hard shoulder near J13 (Worsley), requiring all lanes to be closed as emergency services attended.

Around the same time, an HGV lorry struck a bridge on the M61 Southbound between J2 A580 East Lancashire Road to J1 M60 J15, requiring services to attend the scene, clear up rubble, and perform emergency repairs.

A National Highways spokesperson said: “Lanes one, two, and three (of four) are closed on the M61 southbound junction one to two after a lorry struck an overbridge.

“Greater Manchester Police and National Highways Traffic Officers are on scene with traffic management in place while debris is cleared and the bridge is inspected.

“We received reports of a vehicle fire just before 11am on the hard shoulder of the M60 near junction 13.

“National Highways and emergency services attended.

“The fire was put out, and the driver was taken to hospital as a precaution.”

There were no injuries reported after the M61 bridge incident.

The driver involved in the M60 fire incident was taken to hospital as a precaution, but a Northwest Ambulance Service spokesperson has since confirmed that ‘nobody needed hospital treatment’.

Officers responded to the M61 bridge crash after receiving reports of ‘rubble, rocks, and concrete in the road’, believed to have come off the back of the HGV.

Road sweepers and maintenance teams were sent to clear debris and assess the safety of the bridge.

Delays were in place on both roads for several hours until traffic returned to normal.

All four lanes on both the M60 and M61 were initially closed as clean-up was undertaken.

The M60 remained at a total standstill until around 12.10pm, when lanes were reopened to ease congestion.

But all four lanes were re-closed only ten minutes later as ambulances arrived at the scene.

By around 12.50pm the M61 was back to normal, with all four lanes open and drivers no longer expected to encounter repairs.

Delays lingered slightly longer on the M60as repair work had to be carried out following the incident, meaning lane one remained closed until around 1pm.

There were still slight delays by 1.30pm, but by this point, all lanes were open.

DWP confirms PIP award length changes from April 2026

Published

on

Cambridgeshire Live

You may qualify for PIP if you need extra help with everyday tasks due to an illness, disability or mental health condition

The duration of awards for individuals making a new claim for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) will be extended from April to help reduce the backlog. PIP is the main disability benefit for people of working age in the UK.

You may qualify for PIP if you need extra help with everyday tasks due to an illness, disability or mental health condition. However, your eligibility to PIP isn’t based on your condition – it is based on how it affects your life. PIP is normally awarded for a set period of time and currently, this can be as short as nine months.

But under changes due to come into effect from April 2026, this is to be extended to a minimum of three years for the majority of new PIP claimants aged 25 and over, rising to five years at their next review if they remain entitled.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) said the measure aims to free up health professionals to carry out more face-to-face assessments and deliver more reassessments, reports the Mirror.

These operational changes are separate to the Timms Review, which will examine the role of PIP, eligibility for the daily living and mobility components and assessment process.

PIP comprises two elements – the daily living component, and the mobility component. The daily living rate is £73.90 a week if you’re awarded the standard rate, whilst the higher rate is £110.40 a week.

The mobility component is £29.20 per week for the standard rate, and £77.05 per week for the enhanced rate. You must inform the DWP if your health or condition has changed.

If you’re terminally ill, you typically receive PIP automatically without undergoing an assessment. If you are granted PIP under the special rules for terminal illness, your award will last for three years before being reviewed.

PIP is accessible if you are aged over 16 but below state pension age. If you claim PIP and reach state pension age, your claim will usually continue.

You may be able to submit a new claim at state pension age if you were eligible for PIP in the previous 12 months.

Council announce extra food waste collections to 96 streets

Hartlepool Borough Council confirmed the latest roll-out, which kicks off on Tuesday, March 10, will see more homes being added.

Councils in England must collect food waste from all homes in their area on a weekly basis from April, following changes to the law.

This is part of the Government’s plan to improve recycling rates and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Since the introduction of the service, around 80 tonnes of food waste have been collected.

As part of the latest announcement, homes under the new roll-out will each receive two caddies before the start date – one small caddy for indoor use and a larger one for outdoor use into which the contents of the smaller caddy should be transferred.

Deliveries for these caddies will take place this week.

Residents should present their large caddies alongside their standard refuse/recycling bins on their usual collection day.

Different vehicles are used to empty caddies and standard bins, so both should be put out by 7.30am to ensure collection.

Funding for the new caddies and specialist vehicles required for the collection of food waste has been provided by the Government so this initiative comes at no cost to Hartlepool residents.
