At least 14 killed in temple stampede and hotel fire in eastern India

Shootings at school and home in northeastern British Columbia leave 10 dead, including shooter

PATNA, India (AP) — A deadly stampede broke out at a Hindu temple in eastern India’s Bihar state Monday, hours after a fire swept through a hotel housing pilgrims in West Bengal state.

Seven people were killed and more than a dozen injured in the stampede, while the blaze left at least seven people dead and several others critically injured, police said.

Stampede may have been caused by snapped wire

The incident in Bihar occurred near Ashok Dham Temple in Lakhisarai district, as thousands of devotees gathered to offer prayers on the third Monday of Shravan, one of the holiest months in the Hindu calendar. The period, which usually falls between July and August, is dedicated to the worship of Hindu god Lord Shiva and is marked by fasting, prayers and colorful monsoon festivals across India.

More than a dozen people were taken to a government hospital for treatment, said Shailendra Kumar, a civil official. Kumar said the cause of the stampede was still being investigated.

According to preliminary reports, an electric wire snapped outside the temple premises around 6:30 a.m., sparking panic as devotees rushed to escape what they feared was a risk of electrocution.

A section of the barricades collapsed under the weight of the surging crowd, leading to a crush in which people fell over one another, said Kumar, according to the Press Trust of India news agency.

Many guests at hotel that caught fire were pilgrims

In Tarapith, a temple town in West Bengal’s Birbhum district, a fire broke out around 4:30 a.m. on the ground floor of a four-story hotel while most guests were asleep, the Press Trust of India reported.

Many of the guests were pilgrims visiting Tarapith to offer prayers where a major temple complex also includes a shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. Firefighters brought the blaze under control and the injured were taken to a hospital where some were being treated for burn injuries while others suffered from smoke inhalation and asphyxiation, the report said.

Hotel management told the news agency that the blaze may have originated near the reception area after an electrical component in the hotel’s power supply system caught fire. Authorities are investigating the incident and have not yet established the exact cause.

Crowd crushes are relatively common in India during religious festivals, as large crowds, sometimes in the millions, gather in confined areas with few safety or crowd control measures. Last year in January, at least 30 people were killed as tens of thousands of Hindus rushed to bathe in a sacred river during the Maha Kumbh festival, the world’s largest religious gathering.

In 2013, pilgrims attending a Hindu festival at a temple in the central state of Madhya Pradesh panicked amid fears that a bridge would collapse. At least 115 people were crushed to death or drowned in the river below.

Motherwell ceremony remembers those who fought in the Far East during WWII

Daily Record

The ceremony, held to mark Far East Prisoners of War Memorial Day, was attended by veterans, their families, members of the armed forces community, civic and community representatives, and members of the public.

A special service at the Civic Centre in Motherwell has brought the community together to remember the courage and sacrifice of those who served in the Far East during the Second World War.

The ceremony, held to mark Far East Prisoners of War Memorial Day, was attended by veterans, their families, members of the armed forces community, civic and community representatives, and members of the public.

The Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire, Lady Susan Haughey, was among those attending, with wreaths laid in memory of those who served, suffered and lost their lives.

The service included readings, an Act of Remembrance, the Last Post and Reveille, a minute’s silence and the Kohima Epitaph. Music was provided by Mason Richards, a piper from Dalziel High School, while Elaine Smith played the bugle.

Wreaths were laid by representatives including Lady Haughey, North Lanarkshire Provost Kenneth Duffy, Interim Provost of South Lanarkshire Bert Thomson, MPs and MSPs, the armed forces, emergency services, the Lanarkshire Yeomanry, and families and friends.

The Far East campaign was one of the most difficult chapters of the Second World War. Many servicemen were captured and endured years of hunger, disease, exhaustion and brutal treatment as prisoners of war. Many never returned home.

North Lanarkshire Provost Kenneth Duffy said: “It means a great deal to see so many people come together to remember those who served in the Far East and those who suffered as prisoners of war.

“Many of these men were not much older than the young people we see in our communities today. They left their homes and families behind, not knowing what lay ahead, and what they experienced was beyond anything most of us can imagine.

“Today’s ceremony serves as a reminder of the importance of passing these stories on to future generations, ensuring the sacrifices made 81 years ago continue to be remembered.”

52 new homes proposed for Sherburn, near Malton

52 new homes proposed for Sherburn, near Malton

Cromsdale Estates and William Edward Cundall have submitted an outline application to build on about 3.2 hectares of land adjoining The Pastures in Sherburn, near Malton.

North Yorkshire Council’s Thirsk and Malton area planning committee will consider the proposals on Thursday (AUGUST 20), with planning officers recommending approval.

The scheme has attracted 53 public representations, with 40 objections and 13 in support.

Objectors say Sherburn is becoming overdeveloped and does not have the infrastructure to accommodate further growth. Concerns include pressure on schools, doctors and dentists, increased traffic and congestion on the A64, flooding, loss of agricultural land and impacts on wildlife.

Sherburn Parish Council has raised similar concerns, including the lack of facilities for children and teenagers and pressure on the village school and medical facilities.

The parish council also highlighted concerns about traffic joining the A64 and said bus services were already full.

However, council officers say the development should be allowed despite acknowledging that the site lies outside Sherburn’s development limits, where new housing would not normally be supported.

The report says North Yorkshire Council can currently demonstrate just 0.8 years of housing land supply in the former Ryedale area, against the five years required.

As a result, national planning rules mean the “tilted balance” in favour of sustainable development applies, with officers concluding that the harm caused by the development would not significantly outweigh its benefits.

The scheme would provide 35 per cent affordable housing, equivalent to 18 affordable properties if all 52 homes were built.

Around 1.4 hectares of public open space and a children’s play area are proposed, while the development would also deliver more than ten per cent biodiversity net gain.

The Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board has warned that nearby Sherburn and Rillington Practice does not have capacity for the additional population. A developer contribution of £61,368 towards healthcare infrastructure is therefore proposed.

Officers also acknowledge the development would cause some harm to the setting of the Grade II-listed Brewery House by building on largely undeveloped agricultural land.

However, they conclude this would be at the lower end of “less than substantial harm” and would be outweighed by the benefits of providing market and affordable housing, public open space and biodiversity improvements.

Highways officers, Natural England and the council’s ecologist have raised no objections subject to conditions.

Hollywood actress Hayden Panettiere, best known for her roles in Heroes and Nashville, has died aged 36 – with police saying there were ‘no signs of foul play’.

Detectives confirmed to the Daily Mail that they responded yesterday afternoon to a 911 call from an ‘acquaintance’ of Panettiere, describing her as ‘unresponsive’.

Officers and paramedics headed to the apartment block in Greenville, South Carolina, where they tried to save Panettiere’s life, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police and the local coroner’s office are probing the death, but said the ‘preliminary investigation has not indicated any signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances’.

The star and her on-off real estate agent boyfriend Brian Hickerson were said to have flown from Los Angeles to South Carolina, where he is from, one day before she died.

The 36-year-old star began acting as a child, appearing in soap operas then gaining wider recognition for her role in the 2000 sports drama Remember The Titans with Denzel Washington, and as the voice of Dot in Pixar‘s 1998 film A Bug’s Life.

Panettiere later found fame playing cheerleader Claire Bennet in the superhero drama Heroes before starring as country singer Juliette Barnes for six seasons on Nashville.

She earned two Golden Globe nominations for best supporting actress on the show, while her singing produced 11 entries on the US Billboard Hot Country Songs charts.

Panettiere’s film credits include 2006’s Bring It On: All Or Nothing, comedy-drama film Raising Helen, and appearances in Scream 4 and Scream VI as Kirby Reed.

Commenting under Panettiere’s latest social media post after news of her death broke, actress Selma Blair said: ‘I love you. Don’t be gone. Don’t be gone. Please. Please.’

Singer JoJo wrote on her Instagram stories: ‘this is such devastating news. I am so sorry to hear of her passing. Oh My God’, and Rosie O’Donnell shared a picture of Panettiere with the caption: ‘Oh my god – heartbroken.’

Following her rapid rise to fame, the pressure of the industry began to weigh on Panettiere – with the actress previously revealing that she had struggled with addiction throughout her 20s.

In a memoir published earlier this year, Panettiere opened up about her struggles with mental health, the loss of her younger brother, Jansen, and her decision to give full custody of her daughter Kaya to her former partner, Ukrainian boxer Wladimir Klitschko, in 2018.

‘The idea that anyone would think that I would just give away my child and be okay with it is heartbreaking and couldn’t be further from the truth,’ she told podcaster Jay Shetty after the release of her memoir in May.

Panettiere said her daughter had lived with her father full-time from a young age amid the actress’s struggles with addiction and mental health.

She said: ‘I was struggling with mental health and anxiety and the postpartum and having to act my way through it and just feeling like I completely lost myself.’

Panettiere also spoke about giving up custody of her daughter while struggling with addiction in one of her final interviews before her death.

In an interview with parenting outlet Mome for its July cover, she discussed the life-threatening birth of her daughter Kaya, 11, and the eventual decision to give up custody to her ex-fiance Klitschko, 50.

While battling substance addiction issues, in 2018 the actress made the decision to sign over custody of her daughter to Klitschko, who was not living in the same country as Panettiere at the time.

She said: ‘It wasn’t a decision I made lightly, nor was it a decision I even wanted to make.

‘I was going through a really challenging time in my life… I knew I needed to be able to put her first so that I could get the help I needed and be the mum she needed me to be.’

After giving birth to her daughter in 2014, Panettiere recalled haemorrhaging before she underwent seven blood transfusions and surgery to repair vessels that had begun to fail.

She said: ‘I closed my eyes and just prayed for my daughter to be OK. I truly was ready to go if it was my time. Kaya being safe and healthy was all that mattered.’

However, days later she recalled feeling ‘nothing’ when looking at her daughter and developed postnatal depression. The actress then turned to drinking.

She said: ‘I turned to wine, which ultimately ended up leading to an alcohol dependency. It was how I would get through each day.

Although she underwent treatment, Panettiere felt the ‘root cause’ of her drinking, the depression, was not addressed.

‘I wish more people had known what it was at the time. Maybe I wouldn’t have waited so long to get help,’ she said.

Six years on from giving up custody, Panettiere spoke about her current relationship with her daughter.

She said: ‘I love my daughter, and I’m so proud of the young woman she is becoming. I talk to her all the time, and I feel so connected to her. She’s like a mini-me.’

The actress went on to say she had ‘been able to put her first no matter how I’ve felt or what I’ve experienced’ and that she hoped that one day Kaya would ‘understand my story and why I wasn’t able to be with her all the time’.

She then called herself ‘resilient’ and a ‘work in progress’, but that she was ‘doing the work…and doing my best’.

In May, Panettiere released her memoir titled This Is Me: A Reckoning, in which she also detailed being separated from her only child.

‘Not being under the same roof with her every day has been the most gut-wrenching experience of my life, and it’s hard to describe the layers of emotion – including sadness, resentment, and anger – I’ve felt because of it,’ she wrote.

‘I grieve that I’m not the mother I thought I’d be and definitely not the mother I want to be (trust me, no one should ever have to raise a child on FaceTime), and although I miss Kaya so much my heart aches, I know how blessed I am to be her mom.

‘She is the greatest gift of my life, with all the best parts of her father and me.’

Actors’ union Sag-Aftra, of which the actress had been a member since 1994, said in a post on X: ‘We mourn the sudden passing of Hayden Panettiere.

‘A child actor, Hayden’s long career in TV and film included memorable roles in Heroes, Nashville and more. Our hearts are with her daughter, family, friends & fans.’

Hundreds of cells empty at Britain’s new-build prison HMP Millsike more than a year after opening

Hundreds of cells empty at Britain’s new-build prison HMP Millsike more than a year after opening

Hundreds of cells are empty at Britain’s new-build prison in Yorkshire more than a year after opening.

Government officials and Mitie, who run the prison HMP Millsike, have defended the empty spaces, saying that there is a phased build-up plan in place. This comes as justice secretary Alex Norris is facing a scramble to find prison space this summer after prime minister Andy Burnham partially reversed plans to release some prisoners early.

According to Ministry of Justice (MoJ) statistics from July, the maximum capacity at HMP Millsike will be 1,468 when it is fully up and running. The category C prison for low to medium-security inmates now has an operating capacity of 1,158 cells with a population of 1,124 – meaning more than 300 cells are laying empty.

MoJ officials say it is important for safety reasons for new prisons to be opened up gradually, with staff needing to adapt to a new site and establish the culture and regime.

Independent inspectors raised concerns at the end of last year about safety and security at HMP Millsike, which opened in March 2025. They said that inexperienced staff inevitably require considerable time to gain the confidence, skills and experience needed to operate the site safely.

The Independent Monitoring Board said the “cumulative impact of this inexperience is being felt across almost every aspect of prison life”, with some prisoners spending up to 23 hours per day in their cell.

The prime minister has ordered justice secretary Mr Norris to find a way to prevent the early release of two teenagers found guilty of the manslaughter of PC Andrew Harper.

A senior prison source told The Telegraph that HMP Millsike has been “struggling to staff the prison”, adding: “They have reached the point where they have got all the staff they can recruit to safely operate at a reduced number of spaces but they are struggling to get above that.”

The source added: “They are experiencing what most prisons are facing. We are recruiting people, training them, then they are leaving.”

A Mitie spokesperson said: “HMP Millsike continues to operate in line with the ramp up plans agreed with the Ministry of Justice, with staffing and recruitment aligned to the prison’s phased population build-up. We remain focused on maintaining a safe, secure and supportive environment for prisoners and colleagues.”

A MoJ spokesperson said: “This government inherited a prison capacity crisis after prison places increased by just 500 places in 14 years. We are pulling every lever possible to fix that crisis and are building 14,000 new places with 3,200 already delivered.

“We are working at pace to bring every available prison place online – and have always been clear new prisons require a ramp up period to ensure they remain safe, secure and protect the public.

“We are also exploring how we can go further to increase capacity, including faster deportation of foreign criminals, better use of the women’s estate and reviewing the unjust IPP sentences.”

Myanmar leader heads to Russia to deepen strategic ties

BANGKOK (AP) — The head of Myanmar’s military-backed government embarked on an official visit to Russia to hold talks with President Vladimir Putin aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and strategic cooperation, state media said.

President Min Aung Hlaing departed from the capital Naypyitaw on Monday morning accompanied by members of his cabinet. They will meet with Putin and other top Russian officials and discuss bilateral ties and economic, security and social affairs, state-run MRTV television reported.

Russia, along with China, is a major supporter and arms supplier to Myanmar. Russian-made fighter jets are used in attacks on territory under the control of ethnic minority groups, including many allied with pro-democracy resistance forces.

Min Aung Hlaing previously met with Putin on the sidelines of Moscow’s World Atomic Week Forum in September. Putin has never visited Myanmar.

The visit is among Min Aung Hlaing’s latest in a series of trips to foreign countries, including neighboring China, India, Laos and Thailand as he seeks to strengthen international recognition and a return to the diplomatic standing. Despite the visits, he has remained largely isolated internationally.

Min Aung Hlaing also will attend a Myanmar-Russia Business Forum during the trip, MRTV said.

Min Aung Hlaing was inaugurated president in April following a general election judged by United Nations experts and rights groups to be neither free nor fair. Critics dismissed the polls, held in phases in December and January, as a sham designed to consolidate the military’s grip on power while ostensibly restoring civilian rule.

Monday’s trip marks Min Aung Hlaing’s seventh visit to Russia since the military, which he led at the time, seized power from the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021.

Western nations have imposed economic and political sanctions in response to the military takeover and violent repression of opposition, which has led to the deaths of thousands of civilians and given rise to a civil war.

Russia has defended Min Aung Hliang’s military government in international forums while Myanmar’s ruling generals have generally supported Moscow’s foreign policy agenda.

The countries have held joint military drills and signed a nuclear power development pact and agreed to cooperate in human space flight projects including the selection and training of Myanmar’s first cosmonaut.
