David Algie was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of 22-year-old Michael Theaker

A convicted murderer who kicked a dad-to-be to death after an argument on a bus has died in prison.

David Algie, who was jailed for life for the murder of Michael Theaker in Orford, Warrington in 2006, suffered a massive brain haemorrhage after falling ill at HMP Wymott in Lancashire. He was 38-years-old.

Algie, then 21, was convicted of the murder of Mr Theaker in December 2006 alongside his brother Colin, 19, and a 16-year-old boy. A court heard how the brothers were seen high-fiving each other in the street following the senseless attack.

The killers were said to have kicked Mr Theaker ‘like a football’ during the deadly assault in January 2006. The 22-year-old victim was left in a coma and died six days later, six weeks before the birth of his daughter.

In a statement following his death, Michael’s family said: “Michael was a likeable lad who never had problems with anyone. We are all devastated by this loss.”

In December 2006, David Algie was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 15 years. The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has now confirmed he died in Preston Hospital in July 2024.

Algie, who had a history of substance misuse, had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 2020, the PPO report says. In March 2023 he was released from jail, but just over three weeks later was back behind bars after breaching the terms of his licence.

He was transferred from Forest Bank in Salford to HMP Wymott in Lancashire in May that year. On July 6, 2024 Algie fell ill in his cell. Staff initially suspected a drugs overdose, because his speech was slurred, his pupils were dilated and he was ‘slightly unresponsive’.

An ambulance was called, but by the time Algie arrived at Royal Preston Hospital he had fallen into a coma. Scans confirmed a bleed on the brain and he was placed on life-support. On July 10 the prison began an application for early release on compassionate grounds. Algie died in the early hours of the following day after his ventilator was removed.

A post-mortem found the cause of death to be a brain haemorrhage. Following an inquest in April this year a coroner concluded Algie died of natural causes.

The PPO investigation found Algie’s care was of a ‘reasonable’ standard. But inspectors raised concerns about the ‘unacceptable and inhumane’ use of handcuffs when he was in a coma. Prisons and Probation Ombudsman Adrian Usher recommended the governor ‘implement further measures’ to ensure staff understand when restraints should be used.

Essex Police released a statement on Wednesday evening, saying emergency services were at the scene of an “ongoing incident” in West Mersea, Colchester.

“While we remain on scene, we would ask the public to avoid the Seaview Avenue and beach area,” the statement on Facebook read.

“We appreciate that this will cause some local issues, but would ask for your patience and understanding as we may be there for some time yet. Thank you.”

Police have arrested a masseur accused of sexually assaulting a pregnant British tourist during a massage session at her Majorcan hotel.

The 50-year-old was held on Tuesday after his alleged victim fled the room she was receiving an arranged massage in and alerted her husband.

Officers had to calm the 30-year-old woman down after being called to the hotel in the resort of Calas de Mallorca on Majorca’s eastern coast and finding her ‘highly distressed and crying.’

She told them there had been no problems initially, but the worker began moving his hands up her inner thigh towards her groin at one point in the massage session and ignored her demands to stop before allegedly committing a sex act. 

Staff rushed to the woman’s aid after she came out of the room shouting and asking for help, although she ended up going straight up to her room to speak to her husband before police were called.

Hotel managers admitted to the two officers who arrived at the scene that a guest had complained about being ‘inappropriately touched’ by the masseur around a year ago, but it didn’t go any further.

The unnamed masseur, who had left the hotel by the time police arrived, was arrested in nearby Porto Cristo shortly after officers finished talking to the British tourist.

It was not immediately clear this morning if the man has already appeared in court so a judge can decide whether to remand him in custody or release him on bail.

It comes several months after a masseur was convicted of sexually assaulting a British woman working as a production assistant on a prequel to a record-breaking TV series.

A court in the Portuguese city of Castelo Branco handed the man responsible a two-year suspended prison sentence and ordered him to pay his victim the equivalent of nearly £26,000 back in January. 

He was identified by Portuguese daily Jornal de Noticias, which published details of the conviction at the time, only as Lucas G.

It said he asked his victim to strip down to a bikini and lie on a massage table and groped her. 

He told the British woman in English: ‘At times it’s difficult to stop with pretty girls’ after she asked him to break off the massage she had booked at the spa of a hotel in Fundao near Castelo Branco.

She was staying at the hotel while she worked on the TV series.

As she went to leave, he got down on his knees and begged her not to say anything to the hotel owner before shouting and following her as she ran out the door and locked herself in her room.

The masseur denied any wrongdoing at his trial. Still, the three judges ruled it had been proven he took advantage of the fact he was in an isolated room alone with a woman and in a ‘position of control’ to satisfy his sexual desires.

She needed counselling after the incident, which happened in November 2021 but only resulted in a conviction at the start of the year.

Her lawyer David Silva Ramalho said afterwards: ‘The court had no doubts in fully confirming the veracity of what was stated in the indictment.

‘The decision is important because, despite not erasing what happened, it contributed to it not happening again.’

Last month an Irish tourist admitted groping a man half her age in the sauna of a Magaluf hotel where she was holidaying with her husband.

Raphaella Richer Martins Burns had been expected to protest her innocence after a preliminary hearing to see if a plea bargain could be thrashed out between her lawyer and a public prosecutor, but the hearing ended in a stalemate.

But after insisting earlier this year she wanted her day in court to clear her name, the 38-year-old entered an unexpected guilty plea on June 23 on the day scheduled for her trial.

Brazilian-born Raphaella, based in a small village in east County Cork, had been warned she could face an 18-month prison sentence if convicted over the June 3 2025 sex assault.

But after her U-turn and last-minute decision to agree to a plea bargain deal, public prosecutors said they were happy for the matter to be resolved with a financial penalty.

Raphaella agreed to pay a fine of £2,325 and £430 in compensation to her victim, a Swedish tourist aged 18 when she touched his genitals without his consent in a Turkish steam bath.

She entered her guilty plea at a short hearing yesterday at the Audiencia Provincial Court in the Majorcan capital Palma via video link and was not required to travel to the island to appear in person.

That sex assault occurred at the four-star Hotel Martinique in Magaluf when the Irish woman was still 37.

She initially denied touching the man’s genitals to police before admitting to a ‘misunderstanding.’

Former UFC strawweight champion Jessica Andrade says she has been working as a delivery driver to earn extra money while she recovers from injury.

The Brazilian, 34, has not competed since losing to Loopy Godinez last August, when she injured a shoulder.

Andrade has fought 30 times in the UFC since her debut in 2013, winning 17 of her fights.

“I work as a delivery driver. I deliver meals and things like that. I just pick up orders through an app and make the deliveries,” Andrade said, external on the Brazilian MMA podcast Direto de Vegas.

“I do whatever it takes. I’m not afraid of hard work. I can do just about anything.”

Andrade said she has started a landscaping project at her friend’s house, which involves removing rocks, putting down grass and painting fences.

“If I’m good at this it becomes one more thing I can add if I ever find myself short on cash. We need some extra money,” she said.

In 2018 Andrade said she sold her UFC clothes, backpack and gloves because she was struggling to get sponsors, but added that she was “paid really well” in the promotion.

In 2023 she said she fought five times to pay for her divorce, while the following year she accused former coach Gilliard Parana of withholding money from her. Parana denied all allegations.

UFC fighter pay has been questioned by athletes and the media after boxer Conor Benn signed a reported £11m one-fight deal with Zuffa Boxing, owned by UFC president Dana White.

The UFC gives about 20% of revenue to fighter pay, while boxers get about 60% of revenue from their events.

Asked about criticism, White has pointed to UFC fighter pay rising since 2001.

Katie Price has revealed she has had another secret boob job as she left her children horrified during her first appearance on the upcoming series of her daughter’s reality series. 

Season three of the ITV series The Princess Diaries is set for release on July 28 and in a sneak teaser, the former glamour model, 48, leaves her children shocked as she unveils the results of the cosmetic procedure after having her cup size increased once again. 

Katie was blocked from appearing in the first series of Princess’s show, a decision which has now been overturned for the new series. 

Facetiming their mum, Princess asks: ‘When are we going horse riding?’ as Katie replies: ‘When my boobs have healed.’

As Katie pulled up her hoodie to reveal her surgically enhanced assets, Junior is left grimacing as he looked away from the phone.

Meanwhile last week Princess and Junior revealed they’ve paid tribute to their dad Peter Andre with matching tattoos, after admitting they felt ‘neglected’ by their mum.

The pair have shared they had the word ‘unconditional’ inked onto them, after Peter wrote a song of the same name in honour of their older brother Harvey.

Speaking at the ITV2 Reality Showcase on Friday, Junior said he and Princess had the tattoos as a sign of their ‘love and unity’ as a family.

The pair’s appearance came after admitting their mum Katie’s four-part Sky documentary put them in an ‘awkward position,’ having opened up about the challenges they faced during their childhood on the show.

‘Our dad wrote a song for Harvey named the word [we had tattooed].’

Princess then recalled lyrics from the track, saying: ‘It’s something like ‘becoming a father before I became a dad.’

‘The song is about becoming a father before a dad because Harvey’s not his biological son, but he fathered him growing up and it taught him how to be a father.’

Police are searching for Sandy Scott Barron after his Dacia Duster car was found yesterday.

Police searching for a man who has been missing for five days have found his car abandoned near a bridge in Perth and Kinross.

Sandy Scott Barron’s family have not heard from the 37-year-old since Saturday, July 18. He is now being treated as a missing person after his black Dacia Duster car, registration SD67 SXG, was discovered.

The vehicle was discovered on a track off the B846 south of Tummel Bridge, near Pitlochry, at around 5.30pm on Wednesday, July 22. Enquiries are now ongoing to find the missing man from Inverbervie in Aberdeenshire.

He has been described as being white, 5ft 11in tall and of slim build with short brown hair.

Sergeant Colin Duff, of Perth Police Station, said: “We are working to establish Sandy’s movements and I would urge anyone who believes they may have seen him or his black Dacia Duster at any point in recent days to get in touch as a matter of urgency.

“From enquiries carried out so far, it is possible he may have travelled in the direction of Kinloch Rannoch. If anyone believes they may have seen him, please call 101 quoting reference 2645 of July 22.”

Britain has withdrawn remaining diplomatic staff from Iran as the conflict with the US continued to escalate with a twelfth night of airstrikes and attacks by the Houthis in the Red Sea.

A statement on the Foreign Office (FCDO) website said: ‘Due to the security situation, UK staff have been temporarily withdrawn from Iran. Our embassy continues to operate remotely.’

The FCDO advises against all travel to Iran, saying British and dual British-Iranian residents face ‘significant risk of arrest, questioning or detention’.

A similar move was made in February ahead of the start of US and Israeli combat operations.

US Central Command said late on Wednesday that the 12th night of attacks was designed to ‘further degrade Iran’s ability to threaten civilian mariners and commercial vessels transiting regional waters’.

Announcing the end of the latest wave of strikes on Thursday morning, they said US forces struck military targets including maritime capabilities, missile and drone storage facilities, coastal surveillance sites and air defence assets.

‘The strikes further degrade Iran’s ability to attack civilian mariners and commercial vessels,’ they said on X.

Missiles struck near the cities of Ahvaz, Ramshir and Andimeshk in western Iran, according to Iranian state media, who said two people were killed in the town of Shalamcheh on the Iraqi border.

Kuwait’s army said on X that the country’s air defences were ‘confronting attacks by hostile drones, following the sinful Iranian aggression’.

US President Donald Trump had warned earlier that one bridge or power plant would be destroyed for each ship shot at by Iran in the Strait of Hormuz.

‘From this point forward, any time the Islamic Republic of Iran shoots at a ship in the Strait of Hormuz, whether it be by Missile, Rocket, Drone, or any other device or weapon, the United States will bomb and destroy ONE BRIDGE OR POWER PLANT,’ Trump wrote on social media.

Foreign minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi also said an ‘eye for an eye’ approach would be adopted by Iran.

‘Any aggression against Iran, including our infrastructure, will compel a powerful and decisive response,’ he posted on X on Wednesday.

Iran’s army and its Revolutionary Guards on Thursday said they attacked several US bases in Kuwait following attacks by American forces on Iran. 

They also attacked and destroyed several American military assets in Jordan.

The targets included a radar for the US THAAD missile defence system, a Patriot system, a C-RAM radar and a helicopter hangar, according to a statement from the Guards aired by state TV.

Meanwhile, a Saudi vessel was attacked in the Red Sea as Tehran-backed Houthi rebels claimed to strike tankers in the waterway, Riyadh’s state media said Thursday.

The Houthis had threatened to blockade Saudi ports on the Red Sea – a key route for oil shipments – while the five-month war had already led to the effective closure of the vital Strait of Hormuz.

Washington and Tehran have been battling over key crude supply route Hormuz, which led to the collapse of a preliminary deal aimed at ending the war that has sent global oil prices climbing.

The Houthis said they had carried out missile and drone strikes on two Saudi tankers in the Red Sea, the Encelia and the Layla, after threatening to blockade Saudi ports.

British naval security monitor UKMTO said the master of a tanker reported being hit by an unknown projectile about 70 nautical miles southwest of Al Shuqaiq, causing a fire that the crew was fighting.

Saudi Arabia confirmed the Encelia had been struck, without commenting on the other tanker.

It remains unclear how fully the Houthis could enforce a blockade, but the threat could compound the shock of the Hormuz closure, endangering Riyadh’s ability to bypass the strait for some oil exports.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said Thursday they stopped three oil tankers from passing through the Strait of Hormuz, as the United States and Iran vie for control over the vital waterway.

In recent weeks, Iran has hit tankers using a route hugging the Omani coast to traverse the strait, in a bid to strongarm vessels into using its own waters and pay for safe passage.

‘Three oil tankers, provoked and tempted by the child-killing American army, were trying to pass through the mine-laid route south of the Strait of Hormuz, but after one of them exploded and caught fire, the other two quickly turned around and turned back,’ the Guards said in a statement quoted by Iranian state media.

 ‘The Strait of Hormuz is under our control… and any ship that is deceived by the US and intends to pass without coordination with the Islamic Republic of Iran will suffer the same fate,’ the statement added.

The statement did not say when the incident happened.

Donald Trump will allow Saudi Arabia to develop its own civilian nuclear program under a sweeping new deal as the Iran war spirals into the Red Sea

Fighting reignited two weeks ago after ceasefire talks between the US and Iran broke down 

The 11th night of strikes on Iran into Wednesday saw air defences opening fire over the capital Tehran.

Iran launched a missile attack on a Jordanian city while alerts were sounded in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

Iran has responded to US attacks by targeting energy infrastructure and desalination plants which provide drinking water in neighbouring Gulf countries.

The Guards claimed attacks on Ali Al Salem base, Camp Udairi and a telecommunications tower, while the army said it targeted Camp Doha, Ali Al Salem base and Camp Arifjan, according to separate statements by the forces carried by state TV.

International law generally prohibits such attacks unless the infrastructure is being used for military purposes.

It  comes as the US on Wednesday announced a landmark deal with Saudi Arabia that would establish a civilian nuclear program in the Gulf country, with Washington insisting the agreement includes nonproliferation safeguards.

The move comes as Trump fights a war with Iran that began in large part over concerns with Tehran’s nuclear program – an issue that remains a key point of contention during now-stalled peace talks.

Two agreements – one on ‘peaceful nuclear cooperation’ and another on ‘bilateral safeguards’ – were signed by US Energy Secretary Chris Wright and his Saudi counterpart Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, the US Energy Department said.

The text of the deals was not immediately made public.

‘Together, these two agreements lay the legal foundation for a decades-long, multi-billion-dollar partnership that advances several priority economic and strategic objectives, including nuclear nonproliferation,’ the department said in a statement.

Saudi Arabia’s crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, has previously vowed that his country would ‘without a doubt’ build nuclear weapons if Iran developed them.

The kingdom has faced mounting drone and missile attacks by Iran on its military and civilian infrastructure since Tehran’s war with the US resumed earlier this month.

Saudi officials insist the program is strictly civilian and will allow the kingdom to power its homes with nuclear energy, freeing up more crude for export. 

A convicted killer who is accused of murdering two friends sent a text message saying he was ‘bloodthirsty’ and feeling hostile around the time he allegedly carried out the killings, a court heard today.

James Desborough, 40, who was a fan of the television serial killer ‘Dexter’, is accused of murdering acquaintances Daniel Coleman and Claudio Aquilino near his remote woodland cabin before chopping up their bodies, then cremating and burying them nearby.

Desborough today admitted in court that he had used Mr Coleman’s bank card to buy himself a ‘large beef roast’ after dismembering his friend’s body. 

He has confessed he ‘lost all grip on reality’ and tried to hide their bodies – insisting he only found them dead on his land and that he didn’t kill them.

Jurors have been told the former construction firm boss already has one conviction for murder after he was found guilty of killing his prison cellmate Steven Kempster while he was awaiting trial over the deaths of Mr Coleman and Mr Aquilino.

Winchester Crown Court heard he strangled Mr Kempster, 65, because he was annoyed by his loud snoring while on remand at HMP Exeter in September.

Today jurors were shown a text message in which Desborough tells an acquaintance that he is ‘absolutely bloodthirsty real hostile fuming spitting feathers’.

The accused claimed that this was due to the state his cabin and the surrounding wood had been left in by the people staying there – which included Mr Aquilino, 57, and Mr Coleman, 43.

The text was dated on May 30, 2025 – the date Mr Aquilino became a missing person.

However, when Desborough was challenged on whether the text was evidence that he could become ‘violent’ and ‘threaten’ people, he claimed he did not even know what the word bloodthirsty meant.

He told the court: ‘I don’t know what it means to be fair. I was very unhappy about rubbish and human waste being left everywhere.

‘I don’t understand how that’s a threat.’

A week earlier on May 21, Desborough told Mr Coleman he was ‘a f****** retard’ over text and warned him ‘don’t take me for a mug, boy’.

Jurors heard the two had fallen out over Mr Coleman’s relationship with his wife, Hannah Cresswell, whom Desborough had had an affair with.

Desborough claimed today that Mr Coleman shook his hand when he discovered the affair.

But in this text he described Mr Coleman and Ms Cresswell, ‘a pair of f****** toxic wasters’, having previously emailed the council that Mr Coleman was ‘getting on his f****** tits’.

James Desborough, 40, allegedly chopped up the bodies of two of his acquaintances before burying the remains 

Desborough is accused of murdering Mr Aquilino on a date between April 17 and July 7 last year and Mr Coleman between June 2 and July 7 last year.

He allegedly chopped up their bodies into ‘pieces of flesh’ before leaving them in shallow graves by a stream in secluded woodland near Sticker, Cornwall.

The trio met at a shared accommodation block called Sandy Lodge for people with addiction issues in Newquay.

Prosecutor Ahmed Hossain KC said Mr Coleman had lived with his wife at the shelter until March 2025 when they split.

Desborough told the court he did not think Mr Coleman was controlling in his relationship with Ms Cresswell, but in another email to the council claimed he was ‘massively concerned about her estranged husband and his controlling behaviour’.

A previous witness in the case, Craig Cudmore, alleged that Desborough once stared at Mr Coleman and said ‘(It) looks like someone else is getting buried in the woods’.

Today Desborough admitted under cross-examination that this could have happened but he did not remember.

This evidence was presented to challenge Desborough’s account that he had a steady friendship with the two deceased men.

It was also alleged by prosecutors today that Desborough had sent texts after the men’s deaths to make it seem as though they were still alive.

He also texted a friend that he was going to buy petrol for his chainsaw to make fire wood, which Mr Hossain put to Desborough was an attempt to establish a lie about why he had bought petrol.

The bodies of the two men were burned.

A petrol can was found by Mr Coleman’s grave, which Desborough has claimed someone else ‘possibly’ put there.

This afternoon, Desborough told jurors he bought a ‘large beef roast’ after dismembering his friend’s body and called it ‘everyday life’.

Mr Hossain asked the defendant: ‘That weekend you used (Mr Coleman’s) card to buy yourself a large beef roast, didn’t you?

‘So you just dismembered his body and you used his money and bank card to buy a large beef roast?’

Mr Hossain then asked Desborough if he knew what the word ‘macabre’ meant, to which he said ‘no’.

The lawyer instead asked: ‘It seems unpleasant doesn’t it?’ and Desborough replied: ‘Just everyday life.’

On Tuesday, Desborough said he did not kill the two men and found both of them dead amid ‘a series of unfortunate circumstances’, then decided to ‘destroy’ their bodies.  

Mr Hossain has previously told the jury that ‘dismembered’ body parts of both victims were found by police in Paramoor Woods, near Sticker, during searches near Desborough’s cabin last summer.

He added: ‘Both of these men had lived with Mr Desborough…and these two men were last seen alive in the company of James Desborough.

‘After each of them disappeared, their bank accounts were accessed and their money was spent by James Desborough.

‘He killed them, he dismembered their bodies, he attempted to burn and bury their remains to conceal what he had done, and then used their money whilst at the same time lying to those around him about where they had gone.’

The trial continues.

Residents have been told to avoid swimming in it

Cambridge residents have raised fears for the future of parts of the River Cam with concerns its health is at “serious risk”. Cambridge residents and councillors have raised the alarm after collapsing riverbanks and unsafe water threaten to turn the River Cam into a “muddy trickle”.

Earlier this year, water tested at the designated bathing site at Sheep’s Green found the water to be among the poorest quality in England and the Environment Agency advised people not to swim.

Resident Andrew Brown said the infrastructure itself is crumbling – pointing out a section of the riverbank at Jesus Lock which is collapsing. The 61-year-old said: “It’s also mirrored when you walk through the town and it’s slowly getting a bit more run down with the pavements etc… this vibe in the city is sort of mirrored by the river.

“These are important places – there’s lots of talk about mental wellbeing and health and these are real resources in a town, especially a town like Cambridge. I do feel it should be looked after.

“I understand there are always cost implications but there’s a general feeling that either things aren’t being spent and the money’s being spent somewhere where it shouldn’t be being spent or, of course, there isn’t the money at all.”

Charles Greensitt feels the river is “not being looked after” and no longer looks the way it used to. The 39-year-old said: “The last few years I’ve been coming down and walking the river.

“I walk from Trumpington Park and Ride all the way into town following the river and this year the wildlife and the way it looks isn’t the same. I know people still swim in it down some of the cleaner parts but it’s just not quite right at the minute.

“I mean I go down and I literally see algae just covering right stretches across – it’s not the same anymore. Things aren’t in balance anymore.”

Cllr Eleanor Toye-Scott brought a motion to last week’s Cambridge City Council meeting calling for more to be done to protect the river as its “health is at serious risk”. The Green councillor said: “When the river is at risk we are all at risk.

“If our city and our region are to have any hope of surviving, let alone thriving, in the years to come it is absolutely essential that we ensure that the River Cam thrives too.”

Cllr Cheney Payne said the locks at Baits Bite and Jesus Green are a “vital element” of the network and she was “very pleased” that mayor Paul Bristow pledged funds towards emergency repairs at Baits Bite.

“However,” the Lib Dem councillor continued, “That’s only a very small drop in the ocean and a huge amount is still needed to repair the Jesus Green Lock, and this is something I really believe we should be asking the government to support.

“If Cambridge is to be at the forefront of the government’s plans for growth it would be highly embarrassing to try to do that if our iconic river becomes a muddy trickle.”

The council passed the motion which called for them to petition organisations responsible for the river – including the EA, Cambridge Water and Anglian Water – to do more to protect it.
