Chelsea football club must find its feet after a very expensive Premier League season

Chelsea football club must find its feet after a very expensive Premier League season

Chelsea FC losing the 2026 FA Cup final 1-0 to Manchester City will have been disappointing for the club’s fans. But perhaps the result was not hugely surprising, as the London club hasn’t had a brilliant season on the pitch.

Off the pitch, you could argue it’s been even worse.

Moments of anguish have included the expensive sacking in April 2026 of manager Liam Rosenior after just 106 days in the job. He was the side’s fifth manager (or head coach) in three years.

A month before that, Chelsea was fined over £10 million by the Premier League for breaching financial regulations – the biggest fine the league has ever imposed.

Added to (or taken away from) this, Chelsea then also posted the largest ever pre-tax financial loss in Premier League history. This amounted to £262.2 million in the 2024-25 season.

Not all of these events can be blamed on the club’s current owners, the US consortium known as BlueCo. Previously owned by Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, Chelsea was sold in 2022 as a “distressed asset”, meaning that it needed to be sold quickly (and probably not for its full worth). This was because Abramovich’s assets had been frozen over his links to Vladimir Putin following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

When the new owners bought the club, they started combing through the financial books and found evidence of breaches of Premier League regulations which the club itself reported.

Part of this related to just over £47 million worth of undisclosed payments to unregistered agents and others as part of their plans to buy in new players. According to league rules, all payments relating to transfers need to go through the club books for reasons of fairness.

Leaving tens of millions of pounds out of the records means that the club shows fewer expenses than it should. This in turn could potentially shield it from breaking the league’s “profitability and sustainability” (PSR) rules, which are designed to force clubs into being financially sound businesses.

Those rules mean that clubs are allowed to build up footballing losses of no more than £105 million over a three-year period. Given Chelsea have been making losses for years, correctly recording expenses would increase those losses and potentially put them in breach of the PSR rules.

A fine of £10.75m is no small matter. It brings Chelsea closer to the PSR limit for the coming year, leaving more belt-tightening around spending decisions.

At the time, the club said in a statement: “From the outset of this process, the club has treated these matters with the utmost seriousness, providing full cooperation to all relevant regulators.”

But it is not just Chelsea that is affected. Football is a highly interconnected industry.

While clubs compete against each other, they are also very dependent on each other for matches (otherwise there would be nothing to watch and no tickets to sell) and for players. They also often suffer losses, with cash flow issues and other financial problems common. So having a competitor spend more than they should can negatively affect other clubs.

Football blues

Chelsea have also led the way in doing clever things within accounting rules, which others have followed. In 2023, the club started offering new players very long-term contracts which allowed them to spread their declared costs over a longer period.

So for example, a player bought for £90 million might be given a nine-year contract, meaning the annual cost can be recorded as £10 million.

This can help a club to stay within within PSR boundaries. But it also comes with financial risk (with big spending and time commitments), so to avoid other clubs following suit, both Uefa and the Premier League have now limited (to five) the number of years that can be used in the spending calculation.

Chelsea also effectively sold its women’s team to itself by switching ownership to Chelsea’s parent company for almost £200 million. This shows up as a decent profit for Chelsea, providing another benefit in terms of staying within PSR boundaries. The idea caught on, with Aston Villa and Everton doing the same thing before the Premier League closed this loophole too.

So from a financial perspective it will be interesting to see what tactics Chelsea comes up with next. The fans though will surely be more interested in the tactics chosen by the club’s latest signing, manager Xabi Alonso. And if he gets the club winning again, they’ll happily write off this season’s considerable losses.

State Pension Age warning as MPs demand Universal Credit boost

State Pension Age warning as MPs demand Universal Credit boost

The warning comes amid fears that tens of thousands of older people will be forced to drain their savings or fall into poverty while waiting an extra year to claim their State Pension.

MPs say the emergency benefits boost should be introduced before the end of this year to help bridge the growing gap between working-age benefits and the far more generous Pension Credit.

Why are MPs calling for extra support?

The Work and Pensions Committee says people caught by the latest State Pension age increase face a sharp financial cliff edge.

Someone aged 66 who has not yet reached State Pension age may have to rely on the standard Universal Credit allowance of around £425 a month, while Pension Credit can provide a guaranteed income of more than £1,000 a month for eligible pensioners.

The committee argues that many people in their mid-60s are no longer able to work because of poor health, caring responsibilities or physically demanding jobs, leaving them particularly exposed.

Poverty ‘could be even worse’ this time

The report warns that when the State Pension age previously increased to 66, poverty among people waiting to claim their pension more than doubled.

It rose from 10 per cent to 24 per cent, pushing around 100,000 people below the poverty line.

Now MPs fear the latest increase to age 67 could have an even greater impact as people are expected to wait another year before receiving their State Pension.

The committee says only around four in 10 people aged 66 are currently in paid work, while many older workers are already living with long-term health conditions.

Government accused of using outdated evidence

MPs have also criticised ministers for relying on impact assessments that are more than a decade old when making decisions about the State Pension age.

The committee says no updated assessment is planned until after the increase has been completed, leaving the Government without a clear understanding of how many people could be affected.

It warned that opportunities to introduce measures to reduce hardship may already have been missed.

Benefit boost would cost a fraction of pension savings

  • The committee has backed proposals to temporarily increase Universal Credit payments for affected 66-year-olds.
  • According to evidence presented during the inquiry, the measure would cost around £600 million.
  • That compares with an estimated £10.5 billion the Treasury is expected to save from increasing the State Pension age.

What happens next?

The committee wants the Government to consult on the proposed benefit increase immediately and introduce it before the end of 2026 as a temporary measure.

Longer term, MPs say ministers need a wider strategy to support older workers through employment, health and benefits reforms before any future increases to the State Pension age.

Dr Andrea Barry, Deputy Director for Work at the Centre for Ageing Better, welcomed the report.

She said: “We really welcome the committee’s excellent report and hope it causes the government to step up and take urgent action to tackle an entirely foreseeable increase in poverty caused by another rise in the state pension age.

“Our own work has shown what a financially troubling time the 60s can be for a sizeable minority in this country.

“Poverty peaks just before State Pension age and the previous increase of the State Pension age to 66 doubled poverty levels amongst those on the cusp of that age.

“The committee has warned that this time, the poverty increases could be even bigger.”

She added that increasing Universal Credit for 66-year-olds would represent only a small proportion of the savings generated by raising the State Pension age.

South Africa was once hailed as a ‘Rainbow Nation’ – now it’s being torn apart by ‘Afrophobia’ as black South Africans turn against illegal migrants from other African countries who they fear will take their jobs: SUE REID

Published

on

Brightman, five, is one of the stateless illegal immigrants living under cover in South Africa with his Zimbabwean father Steve Hove,22

A five-year-old boy sits forlornly on scrub ground next to a petrol station near the South African town of Polokwane as he starts his journey to a country he does not know.

He is dwarfed by a large pink suitcase, carried by his uncle Steve Hove, which his mother, Angela, had packed for him before saying goodbye.

The child is called Brightman and he is stateless. When he was born at a clinic nearby, Angela, a Zimbabwean, did not register him with the authorities.

Instead, she carried him home secretly, making little Brightman one of millions of illegal migrants living undercover in South Africa: a diaspora now fleeing for their lives as civil unrest sweeps the Rainbow Nation over uncontrolled borders and mass immigration.

In horrific scenes never witnessed in the post-apartheid era, black foreigners are being chased from their homes, beaten up and having their lives threatened.

Neighbour has turned on neighbour in a wave of xenophobia against the ‘illegals’, who are blamed for fuelling an unemployment crisis in a country where one in three adults is out of work.

‘The uprising against my family began in January. It got worse in my township, where I lived for seven years, when the locals stole my possessions and began screaming at me to go,’ said Brightman’s uncle Steve, a 22-year-old construction worker, as he waited with his nephew for a lift to the Zimbabwean border, marked by the Limpopo River, a two-hour drive away.

‘The South Africans don’t like black foreigners any more,’ he added with a sad smile.

Some migrants, like Steve, are making their own way back home.

Thousands of others are being transported there in a mass evacuation. This week alone, some 23,000 people, mostly Zimbabweans and Malawians, were carried by bus from major cities to an emergency government repatriation camp on farmland near the Zimbabwean border prior to their deportation.

The ugly uprisings rocking this country were sparked last month when the March And March movement – a new pressure group demanding stricter border control and the mass deportation of foreign workers – issued an ultimatum demanding that all undocumented migrants leave South Africa by the end of last month.

More than 120 demonstrations took place that day, with protesters sweeping through cities chanting ‘Mabahambe!’ (‘They must go!’), provoking panic among the country’s millions of migrants hailing from across the continent, including Nigeria, Ghana, Mozambique, Malawi and, notably, Zimbabwe.

Protesters looted foreigners’ homes and businesses, resulting in 600 arrests.

Young South African men waving sticks and mallets threw stones at the windows of shops and private homes rumoured to be harbouring illegals in the country’s biggest city, Johannesburg.

‘South Africans have been replaced by foreigners, increasing unemployment,’ said March And March founder Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma, a rabble-rousing ex-radio presenter who has pledged to hold demonstrations across the country every Thursday until every illegal has been thrown out.

‘We want mass deportations. During the next six months, the government must get rid of all the people who have not left already,’ she added. True to her word, there were more protests this week.

It will not be an easy task: an estimated five million undocumented migrants live in South Africa, 12 per cent of the adult population.

Politicians stand accused of having failed over decades to shut porous borders, particularly with neighbouring poverty-stricken Zimbabwe, from where thousands arrive each year, successfully getting work while South Africans are jobless.

The March And March offensive has infuriated South Africa’s Left-wingers, who have the same passion for open borders as their European counterparts.

Leader of the fledgling but influential political party Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) is the controversial Marxist firebrand Julius Malema – famous for regularly calling on his followers to ‘kill the [white South African] Boer’.

He has slammed the March And March protesters, saying: ‘You say Zimbabweans take your jobs. You march, close shops, beat up other Africans. I will never push out of school an African child who looks like me.

‘I will never refuse a pregnant woman of African descent to give birth in the clinics of South Africa.’

Only this week, Malema condemned ‘Afrophobia’, the hatred felt by South Africans towards other Africans.

His call is for a borderless continent allowing the free movement of all Africans, plus a controversial plan for a pan-African parliament, currency and army.

Distressing though the deportations are, there are signs that South Africans are getting jobs again as the Biblical-scale exodus escalates.

Businesses, shops, farms, mining companies and homeowners are being forced to hire them as the number of cash-in-hand black market workers falls. Employers also face government raids and stiff fines if they are caught paying, or hiding, foreign workers.

Sinisterly, people are being encouraged to report their neighbours if they believe they are breaking the rules.

An anonymous tip-off phone line to police is asking for information on the ‘exact details’ of the location of foreigners, ostensibly to ‘avoid vigilantism’ breaking out and South Africans ‘taking matters into their own hands’.

In a deprived township called Mapetla East on the outskirts of Johannesburg, I visited the Sorty Tuck Shop, which for the past four years has been run and staffed by illegal workers from impoverished Mozambique.

It was taken over by South African 26-year-old Themba Mokhobo on Wednesday after his family struck a deal with the ‘foreigners’ before they were driven out.

One of his first customers was Lesego, 22. Wearing a colourful headscarf, and buying beans, she said: ‘We are pleased a South African is running our local shop again.’

For days, migrants waiting to be picked up by bus for the emergency deportation camp on the Zimbabwean border have been gathering in dreadfully unsanitary conditions at impromptu meeting points in cities, including one on the grass outside the tall white walls of Johannesburg’s Malawian Embassy.

When I visited the embassy on Monday, I met mothers and their young children sleeping on the ground in the winter cold. It was a pitiful sight.

Standing among the mayhem was Lizzie Banda, a young Malawian with a baby daughter, Effort, peeping out from a blanket.

Lizzie had worked in Johannesburg for seven years as a cleaner for a middle-class Zulu family living in a smart suburb before they showed her the door last Sunday.

Now Lizzie was heading back to Blantyre, her home city in Malawi.

‘Effort has no birth papers. Like me, she is an illegal. I am frightened for what will happen to us next. We are not wanted here any more.’

Cecilia Phirr, who ran a company in Johannesburg importing clothes for her fellow Malawian women living in South Africa, was also leaving.

She was with her son, Prosper, five, who was born in the Coronation Hospital, Johannesburg, but like her has no official documents.

Cecilia said her once-welcoming adopted nation had turned hostile: ‘We only want to go home safely. This country has become dangerous for foreign Africans.’

Both these mothers managed to get on a crowded bus for the four-hour drive to the border camp late on Monday.

There, when I visited, I saw them among police and immigration officials struggling to cope as thousands waited in queues stretching into the distance to register their names at desks in giant tents – a procedure to stop them re-entering South Africa for five years.

Each person registering was given an A4 document allowing them to board a bus out of the country, which read: ‘You have undertaken to leave the Republic of South Africa voluntarily… failure of which will mean you are arrested and detained pending your deportation.’

Here too, among this throng of desperate humanity, was Lorraine Ngubeh, 18, and her sibling, Lawrence, 16. The two have spent all their young lives in South Africa, having never even visited their ancestral country of Zimbabwe.

Lorraine, who had a five-month-old baby girl, Tshegototso, tied on her back, has passed her school exams with honours and would be an asset to any country.

‘We feel South African,’ she told me.

‘Our schoolfriends were South African. We don’t know any other country. We think our life in Zimbabwe will be very hard but we have been chased away by threats because we are foreigners. It is not safe for us to stay.’

Although most of the foreigners are leaving voluntarily, and many out of fear, not all are going to the processing camp near the border. Instead, they are fleeing by paying cash to people-smuggling gangs who guide them over the border, either on rafts over the crocodile-infested Limpopo or by road.

It was by this unorthodox method that Steve and his young nephew Brightman reached Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second city, 24 hours after I had met them at the Polokwane petrol station.

They had paid a people-smuggler 600 rand (£27) in cash.

In WhatsApp messages, I later asked about the tiny boy’s wellbeing.

Steve told me they had arrived safely, that the boy’s mother Angela, who had stayed behind to continue earning, was relieved. He adorned his message with a picture of the Zimbabwean flag.

At the official border post bristling with officials, the two had simply walked across carrying the pink suitcase.

‘We give thanks to God,’ he said.

‘We are home. Will you visit us in Bulawayo one day, please?’

Victoria Beckham posts cute birthday snap of daughter Harper with estranged son Brooklyn – he’s going to be ‘furious’: KATIE HIND

She’s the girl who appears to have all a teenager could desire – right down to plans for her very own beauty range, just like her mother Victoria.

But Harper Beckham’s 15th birthday yesterday was marred by the lack of public congratulation from her estranged big brother Brooklyn, and his wife Nicola Peltz.

Parents Victoria and David were quick to laud their only daughter. David uploaded a sweet gallery of pictures to Instagram paying tribute to ‘my pretty lady’ while Victoria called her ‘my best friend’.

Neither mentioned Brooklyn by name but Victoria’s post appeared to show a picture of Brooklyn with a toddler Harper giggling with delight, before being removed from the post moments later, without explanation.

Beckham-watchers have been quick to point out that Brooklyn is said to be ‘furious’ that his parents keep posting pictures of him online.

Both of Harper’s other brothers, Romeo and Cruz, joined the public love-in, posting their own cute tributes.

Even Jackie Apostel, girlfriend of Cruz, made a wonderfully warm post calling Harper my ‘built-in bestie’, while Kim Turnbull, Romeo’s girlfriend, referred to the teen as ‘lil sis’ in her own tribute post.

Was this, one wonders a subtle dig at Nicola, who as the only girl in a family of six boys was initially thought to have bonded with Harper, even referring to her as ‘my baby sis’ in a post from the pre-feud days in 2023?

It’s possible, of course, that Brooklyn and or Nicola could still post something to Harper – as they are thought to be in Los Angeles, where they will be eight hours behind the UK.

But according to one who has followed the saga closely: ‘It’s still devastating for Harper as Brooklyn has been refusing to engage with her and until the fall-out he spoilt her rotten and spent her birthdays with her.’

The entire Beckham clan (minus Brooklyn and Nicola) are currently in Miami to celebrate Harper’s birthday.

The last time Harper was in California, in June this year, she was, of course, photographed knocking on Brooklyn’s door, and, when there was no reply, posting a letter through it.

Brooklyn, 27, promptly accused his parents of setting up the incident for their own gain – which they denied, vehemently.

All in all, for Harper – a sensitive girl, say those who know her – the schism with her brother and Nicola has been devastating.

PlayStation and Xbox are both dead, they just don’t realise it yet – Reader’s Feature

PlayStation and Xbox are both dead, they just don’t realise it yet - Reader’s Feature
How much trouble are they really in? (Metro)

Following Xbox’s mass layoffs and PlayStation’s perplexing physical media annoucement, a reader argues that both formats are ill-equipped to survive the next 10 years.

We’ve all seen the news this week about Xbox: 1,200 developers laid off already, another 1,200 within 12 months, and 9,000+ in total over the last three years. Five studios sold off or going independent and all the ones that are left losing people. Thanks to the rumours we knew it was going to happen, so unlike the Sony bomb drop last week, about no more physical media, you had time to get used to the idea, but it’s still horrible.

What’s just as bad, in my view, is how much Microsoft obviously don’t care and how random the layoffs are (I agree that it was probably organised via AI), with veterans being cut as if they were expendable interns. I bet the exec salaries for one year could pay for all the people they let go, but of course they’d never do that.

The other thing that disturbs me is how little many of my fellow gamers seem to care. They’re much more upset that The Elder Scrolls 6 might be delayed some more, or that Blade game from Arkane might not happen, than they are about the livelihood of the people that make the games they love. And no, they can’t just get another job easily, not in the games industry anyway, because Microsoft is far from the only one going crazy with layoffs at the moment.

A year or two ago anyone who suggested that Xbox was on the edge of total collapse would’ve been shouted down as a fanboy and being part of the console wars. Even though it was obvious the direction things were going it’s really only now that people are beginning to accept that Xbox is on the ropes.

But still there’s fans saying that they can make a comeback, but by doing what? Releasing a new Halo? A new Gears Of War? It’s not 2005 anymore, nobody cares about those franchises anymore, or at least not enough people to make any difference. Yes, it’s possible that some new sequel could have some amazing new change of direction, like God Of War or Zelda, but Gears Of War: E-Day is obviously not that and I have extreme doubts that the next Halo will be either.

Fans need to accept that Xbox’s situation is terminal. There’s a good chance Microsoft already does, and this is just them trying to do a graceful exit or performing for investors or whatever, but there’s no saving Xbox as anything other than just a third party publisher, in my opinion.

At this point I don’t feel that’s too controversial a thing to say, but I also feel PlayStation is in terminal decline too. It’s got further to go than Xbox but it’s still suffering from the same kind of bone-headed execs and a complete disconnect from the fans. All we want is more first party games and that sense of excitement back, of PlayStation leading gaming into a healthy future.

You don’t get that anymore though. No exec ever appears in public – I have literally no idea who’s in charge at the moment – and new games get announced at a snail’s pace. There’s no excitement and no sense of interaction with fans, as every important annoucement is made with just a bland tweet or blog post.

PlayStation 5 is the only choice now for high-end games, but it doesn’t feel like it’s leading anything, it’s just the default, the only option, and Sony are taking that as a reason to do as little as possible, while constantly increasing prices.

The increasing prices is nobody’s fault, even if the idea of making less profit doesn’t seem to have even occurred to Microsoft and Sony, but I feel this is going to be the death of traditional console gaming (baring Nintendo, who I’ve not mentioned as they always do their own thing – and usually know to keep prices low, because they have said they’re taking more of a hit on the Switch 2 now).

Nobody’s going to buy a £1,000+ PlayStation 6 or whatever Project Helix turns out to be. Nobody’s going to pay £80 or more for next gen games either, if they do the obvious thing and increase the price for them and PS Plus/Game Pass. Gaming is just too expensive now and while Sony and Microsoft could’ve survived that if they were at the top of their game, with amazing new exclusives and plenty of communication from the people in charge, explaining what they’re doing – but that’s not how they’ve played it at all.

In 10 years’ time I would be surprised if gaming was anything other than PCs and Nintendo consoles, with Xbox and PlayStation either gone completely or only third party publishers. It’ll be a miserable end for them, but they’ve only brought it on themselves with their arrogance and greed.

Teenager dies after being found in Dovestone Reservoir

Emergency services were called to Dovestone Reservoir this evening where they found a 18-year-old unresponsive in the water.

Despite, say police, the best efforts of emergency services, he was pronounced dead at the scene

Officers say that a scene remains in place and enquiries are ongoing.

Detective Inspector Steven Horton of the Oldham district said: “We have tragically recovered the body of an 18-year-old man from the water and are conducting extensive enquiries to establish the full circumstances.

“Our thoughts remain with his family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.

“I would like to take this opportunity to remind the public of the dangers of open water. We strongly encourage people to stay safe and refrain from entering large bodies of water including reservoirs, rivers, canals, or ponds”

“Your safety is our priority. Please look after yourselves and enjoy the weather safely.”

This is the latest tragedy in which young people have been found dead after apparently getting into difficulties in the water as the region enjoys a heatwave.

Earlier this month a boy died in the water at Clifton Country Park.

A number of people have died there after going into the water.

The latest death comes as emergency services issue a warning for young people to enjoy the weather safely.

Colombia’s outgoing environment minister warns of climate action setbacks

Colombia's outgoing environment minister warns of climate action setbacks

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Colombia ’s outgoing environment minister warned Friday that the incoming government could reverse recent climate and conservation gains, pointing to its support for fracking and fossil fuel development and what she described as climate skepticism among some officials.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Environment Minister Irene Vélez Torres said she fears Colombia could lose ground on climate action at a time when the country is already confronting increasingly severe environmental challenges, including El Nino, a naturally occurring climate phenomenon that can disrupt rainfall patterns and trigger droughts, floods and extreme heat.

“Arriving with an attitude of climate denialism is absolutely dangerous,” Vélez said.

The comments come weeks before President-elect Abelardo de la Espriella takes office on Aug. 7 following a narrow election victory that marked a sharp political shift in Colombia after four years under President Gustavo Petro. The outgoing administration sought to position Colombia as a global leader on climate diplomacy, Amazon protection and a transition away from fossil fuels.

During his campaign endorsed by U.S. President Donald Trump, de la Espriella pledged to revive Colombia’s oil sector, voiced support for fracking and argued the country should make greater use of its natural resources to spur economic growth. Environmental advocates and some Indigenous leaders have warned that greater emphasis on extractive industries could increase pressure on environmentally sensitive areas, including parts of the Amazon rainforest.

About 42% of Colombia’s territory is covered by Amazon rainforest, and the Petro administration made rainforest protection and a transition away from fossil fuels central pillars of its environmental agenda.

Among Vélez’s biggest concerns is the future of Indigenous environmental governance in the Amazon. She said she worries the incoming administration could weaken recent efforts to recognize Indigenous authorities as key environmental decision-makers and reduce support for Indigenous territorial governance initiatives.

She also expressed concern about the possible return of aerial glyphosate spraying of coca, the plant used to make cocaine, describing the herbicide as “potentially carcinogenic to humans” and saying its use had caused lasting environmental and health impacts in Colombia.

Vélez also warned about expanded fossil fuel development and mining in Colombia’s paramos, unique high-altitude wetlands that supply water to millions of people.

The incoming administration has rejected some of those characterizations. Fabio Arjona, the marine biologist chosen by de la Espriella to serve as environment minister, has said environmental debates should be less ideological, criticized what he called “environmental hysteria” and defended the possibility of fracking under strict controls while saying it should not occur in protected areas such as national parks and paramos.

Representatives for de la Espriella and Arjona did not respond to requests for comment before publication.

Vélez said the change in government should not erase recent efforts to reduce deforestation, restore ecosystems and strengthen protections for wetlands, paramos and the Amazon.

“We have a legacy that, despite our differences, should be preserved,” Vélez said. “It would be an unforgivable mistake to abandon this agenda simply because it comes from a different political sector. Social and environmental justice must remain at the center of the political agenda.”

The movie star, who has two daughters, Edie, ten, and Delilah, six, with James, 42, carried a white clutch bag and wore tortoiseshell sunglasses.

James, the former singer in the band Klaxons, wore a light grey suit over a pink shirt and cream Gucci loafers.

Keira’s name now reads Keira Christine Knightley, at Companies House, having previously been Righton.

The changes relate to her performing arts company KCK Boo Ltd, which had more than £11million of assets at the time of its latest accounts.

After speculation about the reason for the change, representatives for the actress said it was done to comply with new identity verification rules which meant it had to align with her ID document name, not her married name.

In 2014 she had talked about adopting her husband’s name, saying: ‘I went to do the passport thing “cos I was thinking, ‘Shall I do it? It will be helpful”. But you actually have to see it written down, and I found I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t go there. Yet.’

Keira changed her name on company documents in 2021.

Meanwhile, the famous pair were in good company on the day.

No doubt Keira will be looking forward to bumping into fashion designer Tom Ford, who arrived with Sense And Sensibility star George MacKay.

Actors Lesley Manville and Richard were also present on the day and were dressed in Ralph Lauren.

Arthur, 23, s only the second wild card player in history to reach the semi-finals at the All England Club.

As he stepped out to face the second seed Zverev on Friday, parents Olivia, 53, and Loïc, 52, who are divorced, were both ardent supporters.

His mother sat separately from his father, who was accompanied by his partner Diana Kyllmann, 35, a Bolivian former tennis player turned investment banker.

The Brit has already secured a minimum prize pot of £900,000 just by making the semi-final – although his affluent upbringing means this has never been an issue for the family.

Should underdog Fery pull off victory in front of the packed crowd this afternoon, he will progress to the final on Sunday and guarantee himself at least the runner’s up prize of £1.8 million.

Taiwan, Japan and south-eastern China brace for Typhoon Bavi as landslides kill 15 in Philippines

Residents observe huge waves brought by Typhoon Bavi in Hualien city, Taiwan

Taiwanese authorities have warned that Bavi could bring up to 1m (39 inches) of rainfall. Some 29,000 soldiers have been put on standby to help with relief efforts, according to the island’s defence ministry.

Bavi is set to be the largest storm, by size, to hit the island since 1987, Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration told Reuters.

Farmers across the region rushed to harvest or protect their crops while the weather held earlier on Friday, while fishermen made sure to secure their vessels tightly.

“Don’t be fooled by the nice and calm weather now. A storm like this could be the most terrifying,” 60-year-old fisherman Chen Ming-hui told Reuters.

Thousands of sandbags have been distributed to residents and shop-owners in flood-prone areas.

Across the strait, China has also warned of “significant impact” from the typhoon that could move northward after smashing into the south-eastern Fujian province.

“Bavi’s large size and abundant energy mean its remnants and outer rainbands could move from Jiangsu and Anhui provinces toward the Bohai Sea region,” said Ma Jun, director of China’s Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs.

The northern provinces, which have “less experience” dealing with typhoons in comparison with the south, should “strengthen preparations”, he warned.

Some forecasts suggest Bavi could make landfall twice in China.

Free bus travel boost for families as school holidays begin

Free bus travel boost for families as school holidays begin

Children aged five to 15 will be able to travel free on participating local bus services throughout August, potentially saving parents hundreds of pounds on trips during the school break.

The offer will run from August 1 until August 31, with ministers saying it will make family days out more affordable as households continue to feel the pressure from the cost of living.

Who qualifies for free bus travel?

The scheme is open to children aged between five and 15 travelling on participating bus services in England.

It means families will not have to pay child fares, which typically cost between £1 and £2 per journey.

Under-fives already travel free with most major bus operators.

How much could families save?

Parents using buses regularly during the school holidays could save significant sums over the month.

The free travel can be used for journeys to beaches, museums, parks, shopping trips, theme parks and other summer attractions.

The initiative forms part of the Government’s Great British Summer Savings campaign, which also includes discounts on children’s meals, cinema tickets, theatre performances and family attractions.

Minister says scheme will help families enjoy summer

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said the initiative would help families enjoy more affordable days out.

She said: “Great British Summer Savings means more people can be excited about getting out and about this summer, whether it’s seeing the Roman Baths, learning something new at the Science Museum, or falling asleep on the bus ride home after a day riding rollercoasters at Alton Towers.

“I know that the cost of living is a concern for households across the UK, which is why we’re cutting the cost of the day-to-day, with free bus travel for children this summer and the £3 bus fare cap helping more families make the most of the small plans that make life enjoyable.”

The Government has also confirmed the £3 bus fare cap for adults will remain in place until March 2027.

Ministers say the move is part of wider efforts to make public transport more affordable, alongside investment in local bus services across England.

Roads Minister Simon Lightwood visited Bath ahead of the launch to promote the scheme, which follows similar free bus initiatives that have already proved popular in some parts of the country.

Families will be able to take advantage of the free travel throughout August before schools return in September.
