Prime Minister Mark Carney has said Canada is seeking a “unique alliance” with the European Union (EU) but not membership of the bloc, as its trade war with the US intensifies.

“What we are looking – and will begin discussions for – [is] a unique alliance with the European Union,” Carney told reporters in Toronto on Sunday.

Carney will this week travel to the UK and France, where he is due to address the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

His comments come after the Wall Street Journal reported that EU officials were open to a suggestion from Carney that Canada could become an “associate member” of the bloc, according to officials from both sides.

Carney instructed his special envoy to Europe to “scope out the most ambitious possibilities short of full membership”, the paper reported.

Speaking to reporters at the Toronto International Film Festival, Carney denied Canada was seeking formal membership, saying: “We share the same values. We have the same priorities, and we have very complementary strengths.”

He continued: “We’re stronger together. And this is at a time when the world’s more dangerous and divided, and friends need to stick together at these times.”

In recent weeks, Canada and the US have been locked in an escalating trade war, after trade negotiations between the two countries broke down in late August.

The US has imposed tariffs on key Canadian sectors including steel, aluminium and lumber, as well as introducing an additional 50% levy on about C$28bn ($20bn; £15bn) of Canadian goods.

In response, Ottawa slapped levies of up to 50% on C$28bn ($20bn; £15bn) of American products, from steel to furniture to cotton T-shirts.

While in Europe, Carney will attend European Commission Ursula von der Leyen’s State of the European Union address. The Canadian leader will also travel to Liverpool to meet with UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham.

Since taking office, Carney has promoted a strategy aimed at creating a “more independent, more resilient economy”, in the wake of increasingly hostile policy towards his country from the Trump administration.

Trump has talked about making Canada a “51st state” of the US, and recently ordered the US government to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America”.

In January, Carney urged middle powers to come together during a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, adding that the “old order is not coming back”.

Sega’s classic Dreamcast driving game returns to modern formats and somehow makes competitive multiplayer work, with deeper driving mechanics than expected.

There were times when playing the recent closed network test of Crazy Taxi: World Tour, when my brain literally felt like it was overloading.

If you remember the chaos caused in the original’s downtown version of San Francisco, then multiply that by five rampaging taxis, amp up the traffic, and introduce a finish line to foster everyone’s competitive spirit, as your vehicle becomes a petrol-guzzling tornado blowing through the city.

Sega’s new sequel to the classic 1999 arcade driving game revives the formula of ferrying passengers to new destinations as quickly as possible, only this time you’re competing against other taxi drivers. There are new modes and controls, but the premise is just as simplistic as it always was, and that’s entirely the point.

When it’s released next year, the full game will feature a mission-based single-player campaign set across five open world cities, plus a time-based arcade model.

However, what I played during the network test at the weekend was two online modes that somehow managed to inject even more mayhem into the game. The first was a five-player race format in which you have to speed through a linear route, stopping in designated zones so passengers can hop in your backseat, before you shoot off to their destination. And therein lies the first potential problem of Crazy Taxi: World Tour.

This is a racing game in which constantly stopping and starting every 20 seconds is built in. That doesn’t sound fun. And yet, thanks to the relentless speed, destructible environments, and relatively nuanced control scheme, it is.

There are, for example, different ways to pick up passengers. You can simply hold down the left trigger to break, which takes a bit of time as your momentum slows. Or, if you’re a bit more dexterous, press circle and then left trigger, which slams on your breaks in a shower of sparks.

To get going again, you can either hold right trigger to accelerate or press circle then right trigger to get a sudden boost of speed, in what the game calls a ‘crazy dash’. You can take this further, timing rhythmic presses of circle and right trigger to keep on crazy dashing along the course, then triggering crazy stop to pick up passengers. Circle is essentially the crazy button.

This results in a strangely compelling driving game where you’re constantly pressing button combinations throughout the entire route, almost as if prompts were flying at you like in Guitar Hero.

Overshoot the mark and you can even pull off a quick reverse dash by hitting circle and left trigger. These extra methods of control gives an otherwise simplistic game, about belting from point A to point B, some well needed extra layers. But it doesn’t stop there.

There’s a strategy to boost management. Triangle triggers nitrous, which gives you a burst of speed as blue flames emanate from your tyres. The best time to do so is when you’re in heavy traffic, because it sends path-clogging cars flying out of your way like fluttering litter.

More aggressive players can save their boost until they’re in the vicinity of rival drivers. Hitting them with nitrous hurls them out of the way and shuts down their engine for a second.

Also, dangerous driving builds nitrous. This includes drifts, shunts, and airtime. In the San Francisco map I dashed off hill crests to get some juice and then triggered it in bursts to wipe out other drivers (this works especially well on corners).

In Germany, which mashes a Cologne Cathedral lookalike together with Sega’s take on Neuschwanstein Castle, I took advantage of its many twists and turns by chaining drifts and spent nitrous on the final rampage down a packed autobahn.

And rampage is an understatement. The game is at its best when five players are neck-and-neck, blazing a trail through busy traffic as screaming pedestrians scatter, parasols splinter, and congested traffic is sent barrelling down the road like it’s been hit by a blast of Godzilla’s radioactive breath.

Add to this an incredibly on-the-money rock/punk soundtrack featuring more than a few songs by The Offspring (yes, Crazy Taxi fans, All I Want is back), and you have a game that’s hard to take your eyes and ears off.

The second online mode for the network test was Cops and Robbers. Here, in a small hub, one team of taxi drivers attempts to pick up passengers while another team of police cars smashes into them. Doing enough damage shuts the taxis into a fenced-in car park until other taxi drivers break them out by breaking through the walls. It’s fun, but only as the cops.

That’s because, for law enforcement, that 15-second gameplay loop is driving then crashing. As taxis, the loop is driving then being crashed into, with the ‘reward’ being a time-out as other drivers get to continue playing. In terms of appeal, it’s like Mario Kart’s balloon-popping Battle mode: something you’ll play occasionally as a palette cleanser before returning to the main event. Still, seeking out moving targets rather than inert pedestrians does offer a welcome spin.

In an effort to add more depth, Crazy Taxi: World Tour lets you modify your ride with perks. These allow you to, for example, generate boost faster, turn corners sharper, and suffer less penalties when going off-road. It’s hard to really notice their effects in practice, though. Especially as your choice of vehicle offers a bigger difference.

There are three kinds of car type: the racer archetype is built for speed but slows massively upon impact with obstacles, the heavy carves through traffic but falls short on long straights, and the all-rounder is a solid mix of everything. Your vehicle tends to dictate the optimal route through the race. As a heavy I preferred to stay with the pack and try and knock people off course, while as a racer, I was constantly evading other players by taking side streets. Despite the game’s arcade spectacle, there’s subtle strategy in abundance.

Multiplayer Crazy Taxi shouldn’t work, but after spending a weekend in the Crazy Taxi: World Tour network test, consider me pleasantly surprised. This is an absolute riot of colour and collisions. Somehow, Sega has managed to make a quintessentially single-player game work as a competitive online title.

I’ve been cooking broccoli for years, but coating it in a basic ingredient before it goes in the oven has taken it to a whole new level of umami deliciousness.

Of all the tasty vegetables available, broccoli has never been one I’ve particularly favoured. Yet it appears I simply hadn’t found the right recipe and way to prepare it.

While I’d typically boil broccoli, roasting it has proved to be a genuine revelation. It lends the vegetable a caramelised sweetness and a texture that’s both crisp and tender.

That said, even roasted broccoli can become repetitive over time, so I’m constantly searching for methods to enhance it without requiring excessive effort. I’ve previously prepared the broccoli with garlic, lemon juice and Parmesan cheese.

On this occasion, I’ve uncovered one ingredient in my kitchen cupboard that delivers tremendous flavour – miso paste.

How to make broccoli tastier with miso

The original recipe I tried recommended using one tablespoon of miso paste per head of broccoli, though you can adjust this according to your taste.

To prepare it, cover the broccoli florets with miso until thoroughly coated, then roast at 200C for approximately 20 to 25 minutes, or until the edges turn crispy and caramelised.

Applying one tablespoon of miso per head of broccoli delivers a delightful umami flavour, though if you prefer bolder tastes, try using two tablespoons for a more intense savoury profile.

From my own testing, I discovered that mixing the miso with a small amount of olive oil before combining it with the broccoli ensures the flavour distributes more uniformly.

What is the best miso to use

Roasting emphasises the inherent sweetness of broccoli, and white miso (shiro miso) complements it beautifully.

Its gently sweet and salty character elevates the caramelised florets without dominating them.

If you’re keen to experiment with different varieties of miso, here’s how their flavours compare:

White miso – the mildest form of miso – works brilliantly with roasted vegetables.

Yellow miso – this version is aged longer than white miso, producing a deeper, more concentrated savoury flavour. It’s a superb substitute if you prefer a more pronounced umami taste.

Red miso – recognised for being the most powerful and salty variety owing to its prolonged fermentation period. While red miso is ideal for soups and heartier dishes, it can readily overpower the flavour of roasted broccoli.

New movies to stream from Sept. 14-Sept. 20

— It can be easy to miss some of the late summer standouts in theaters, but a number of them land on premium video-on-demand Tuesday. Matt Johnson’s “Tony,” starring Dominic Sessa as a young Anthony Bourdain, is a charming coming-of-age tale set over a 1970s summer on Cape Cod. Alexander Ullom’s “It Ends” is about friends on a late-night food run who become trapped on an infinite highway. And David Robert Mitchell’s “The End of Oak Street” is an Amblin-inspired suburban romp, with family drama and dinosaurs.

— “Stop That Train” (Sept. 20 on Netflix) stars RuPaul as the American president, and “Drag Race” alumni Ginger Minj and Jujubee play stewardesses on a train, the Glamazonian Express. Such is the setup of this bonkers comedy from “Hairspray” director Adam Shankman about a train speeding toward disaster.

— Very possibly the best movie I’ve seen in 2026 first came out in 1970. Satyajit Ray’s “Days and Nights in the Forest” has long been unavailable, unlike some of the Bengali master director’s other films. But a restoration released earlier this year revived a too-little-seen masterwork. It’s now streaming on the Criterion Channel, with an introduction from Wes Anderson. In it, three privileged bachelors from the city vacation in a rural Indian district populated by Santhals, an Indigenous group. Their interactions with the locals, as well as an elegant young woman (a beguiling Sharmila Tagore) visiting a family house, in ways both small and profound traverse chasms of caste, class and gender.

New music to stream from Sept. 14-Sept. 20

— He knows what works, and that’s what he continues to provide. Country all-star Luke Bryan will release his ninth studio album, “Signs,” on Friday — a 12-track collection of radio-ready classics. The medium is the message: These are feel-good tracks meant to warm the listener, from the crush-worthy “Country and She Knows It” to the cheeky “Fish Hunt Golf Drink” and beyond.

— Anthrax — one of the “Big Four” leaders of the thrash metal scene alongside Metallica,Megadeth and Slayer — is back with the band’s first album in a decade. “Cursum Perficio,” out Friday, follows 2016’s “For All Kings” and promises huge riffs and venomous vocals. Start with the nearly seven-minute face-melter “The Edge of Perfection.”

— Carly Rae Jepsen returns with a double album, “Day & Night,” also out Friday. For those who really, really, really like her energetic synth-pop, you’ll want to jump straight to the second half. The first is full of psychedelic flair, with dreamy ’70s references instead of her familiar dance-pop. Together, they make for a dynamic listen from an evolving performer.

— “Dancing with the Stars” cha-chas back to TV with a two-night premiere on ABC and Disney+ beginning Tuesday. Episodes also stream next day on Hulu. This time, experienced dancers like Jenna Dewan (who starred in “Step Up”) and Julia Stiles (who starred in “Save the Last Dance”) compete against novice dancers like Maura Higgins (“Love Island” and “Traitors”), Tatyana Ali (“The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”) and Ciara Miller (“Summer House.”) Time will tell if this 35th season will be as popular as last year’s go-round, which delivered the show’s strongest overall ratings since 2019 and its best season finale in 10 years.

— Apple TV premieres Season 6 of its spy hit “Slow Horses,” starring Gary Oldman on Wednesday. The new episodes are adapted from Mick Herron’s sixth and seventh books in his “Slough House” series. Olivia Cooke’s Sid Baker resurfaces after she supposedly died from a gunshot wound to the head.

— A “Reacher” spinoff called “Neagley” launches with Maria Sten (Frances Neagley) as the star of the Chicago-set show. Instead of being someone who attracts trouble like Jack Reacher, Neagley is a private investigator who chooses her battles. The series debuts Wednesday on Prime Video, the same day as “Reacher”’s Season 4 finale.

— The Sega arcade game “Golden Axe” has been adapted into an adult animated series for Paramount+. All 10 episodes drop Wednesday. The voice cast includes 2026 Emmy nominee Matthew Rhys, Danny Pudi (“Community”), and Lisa Gilroy (“The Paper”).

— Ella Beatty is the first female “Monster” in Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s anthology series for Netflix. She stars as Lizzie Borden, who was accused of killing her father and stepmother in the late 1800s. It premieres Thursday, Sept. 17.

New video games to play from Sept. 14-Sept. 20

— “Marvel’s Wolverine” is probably the crankiest of our major superheroes, but it doesn’t make him any less beloved. In this new game, he’s dragged back into action by Team X to fight a corporation that’s bent on kidnapping and eliminating mutants. Turns out old Logan’s surliness has some benefits, thanks to a “rage mode” that makes him deadlier as he gets angrier. Expect cameos from the likes of Mystique, Sabretooth and Jean Grey in an adventure that bounces from Canada to Japan and beyond. Sony’s in-house studio Insomniac Games has developed three terrific Spider-Man titles, so the expectations for this piece of the Marvel Universe are high. The claws come out Tuesday on PlayStation 5.

— In Nintendo’s “Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave,” four fighters aim to test their mettle in the Heroic Games. If you’re a fan of this franchise, though, you’re probably craving something other than solo gladiatorial combat. Indeed, each of the four heroes has a story to tell as they explore the sprawling Dagdan Empire, diving into dungeons and recruiting allies with the goal of eventually defeating a demon god. That means a lot more of the tactical, turn-based team combat that has made previous Fire Emblem epics so addictive. Start rallying your troops Thursday on Switch 2.

The brother of Hayden Panettiere’s ex-boyfriend Brian Hickerson has spoken out after being arrested for disorderly conduct Saturday following a bar brawl involving Brian.

Zach Hickerson, who was placed into custody following an incident at a Greenville, South Carolina restaurant, told TMZ that the public’s misconceptions about the death of the actress caused tensions to escalate during the incident.

According to an eyewitness, the brothers were heckled about Panettiere’s death before Zach was arrested. 

‘This is the problem with y’all putting stuff on the Internet: People fill in their own holes and then they want to attack people for no reason,’ Zach said following his release from a jail facility.

He continued, ‘It’s just super-frustrating all that we’ve been through and all the rumors that get started and then people believe them, and then they attack as a result of the rumors.’

Zach added, ‘That’s what pi**es me off,’ noting that he will ‘eventually’ clarify any falsehoods linked to the tragic case.

The Daily Mail has reached out to Hickerson’s legal representatives for further comment on the story.

The brothers had been drinking at the Wild Wing Cafe, an eyewitness told TMZ Sunday, when other patrons on hand allegedly heckled the siblings over Panettiere’s August 16 death.

The eyewitness told the outlet that ‘about five middle-aged people’ had been at a nearby table, and women in the group had confronted the Hickerson brothers at their table numerous times.

It was not immediately clear if the women had been seeking to de-escalate the tense situation between the men at their table and the brothers, the eyewitness told the outlet.

The situation escalated when Zach confronted one of the male patrons at the table, the eyewitness said, and things appeared to get physical as the two were approaching the bar.

The one-time actor had been ‘drinking for hours’ with his brother Zach at a back table at the restaurant when he got up and went to the bar, according to the outlet.

At that point, the confrontation attracted the attention of others at the restaurant, with others physically getting involved, the eyewitness said, adding that a table had been knocked over and glasses had been tossed on the floor. 

A worker appeared to be standing in front of Brian during the conflict. Hickerson, who was wearing a green hoodie and light-colored jeans, had been talking to some people when things got heated and he was seen picking up a bar stool and flinging it backwards.

The video showed Hickerson being lifted up and carried out of the saloon by a man in a red baseball cap as a bartender shouted, ‘Let him go!’

Brian wound up handcuffed by police and was seen claiming they had leaked details about Panettiere’s death as he sat cuffed on the curb, according to footage obtained by TMZ.

Brian and his brother were in conflict with some other people outside the restaurant when police arrived on the scene, an eyewitness told the outlet. He was seen in images sporting a facial cut following the conflict.

A source told TMZ that Hickerson was handcuffed by police and started shouting at them: ‘GPD leaked it when my girlfriend died,’ an obvious reference to Panettiere’s death.

Brian managed to avoid arrest and was released. However, Zach was reportedly heavily intoxicated and ‘yelling profanities,’ leading to his arrest in connection with disorderly conduct.

Brian and Zach were both present at the Greenville, South Carolina condo where Panettiere was pronounced dead at age 36.

According to the Greenville Police Department’s incident report, Zach told police that Brian was sleeping in a separate room of the Airbnb when he arrived and found the actress unresponsive in a chair.

Zach stated that Brian administered Narcan – a medication that reverses opioid overdoses – and that they performed CPR while communicating with 911 dispatchers.

Panettiere wrote about her volatile and often abusive relationship with Hickerson in her memoir that was published on May 19, just three months before she died of a suspected drug overdose

Brian has since met with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) amid their investigation into the actress’ suspected overdose death, TMZ previously reported.

Local and federal investigators reportedly believe the actress was sold drugs that may have caused her death, and authorities are now focused on identifying the suspected dealer.

Panettiere’s toxicology reports and official cause of death have not yet been released. 

The Nashville star had a volatile and tumultuous on-and-off relationship with Hickerson beginning in 2018.

Brian had been arrested and charged in connection with domestic abuse involving Panettiere multiple times.

In 2021, he pleaded no contest to two felony counts of injuring a spouse or girlfriend, resulting in jail time, probation, domestic violence classes, $500 in restitution, and a five-year protective order, per People.

‘The truth will come out as the authorities complete and release additional details from the investigation. And that is important because the people who loved and adored Hayden deserve the truth.’

Zach described Panettiere as ‘one of the most precious individuals on this earth.’

He also argued that the star’s friends and family should be allowed to mourn her passing without any ‘additional noise.’

He added: ‘At this time, I want to clarify my involvement in effort to keep the focus on the fact that we lost one of the most precious individuals on this earth and to allow those that cared about her to mourn without additional noise, chaos, and misinformation being created and propagated by the media as well as the public.’

The founder of a popular car show was killed in a fiery car crash after his McLaren slammed into a tree in California just an hour after he was pulled over by the police. 

James Wehr, 27, died after the supercar split in two and burst into flames following the early morning crash on Saturday in Irvine. 

The owner of South OC Cars and Coffee, which hosts weekly car shows, was riding in a 2019 McLaren 720S with another driver, who also died, police said. 

Wehr, who was identified as one of the victims by friends and family on social media, posted a clip on Instagram of a police car parked behind the black supercar at Newport Beach just an hour before the deadly crash. 

It was unclear why the vehicle had been pulled over.

He posted another photo of the McLaren parked in front of the Pendry hotel moments later. 

According to investigators, the car had been stopped at a traffic light before it accelerated at a high rate of speed, causing the driver to lose control. 

The car clipped the curb and barreled into a tree at around 12.20am, leaving both passengers dead, the Irvine Police Department said.

Sarah Wehr, the entrepreneur’s mother, described her son as a ‘magnificent man’ with a love for his people, family and friend that was ‘second to none.’

‘I remember your first steps at our home in Perth, Australia. The first time you said “Dada!”, your very first word. I remember you sleeping through the night at 8 weeks. I remember everything. All of it,’ she wrote on Instagram. 

‘Your insanely great belly-laugh and your cheeky smile. Thank you for all the years we were blessed to know and love you James. This slices from all sides. I hope you’re getting a beer with Gramps as you both watch over us all. I love you son.’

Emma, Wehr’s wife, posted an emotional set of photos of the pair, including on their wedding day, alongside a heartbreaking tribute to her late husband. 

‘James, I never thought the day would come that I’d have to say such a final goodbye,’ she wrote. 

‘Getting the opportunity to love you will always be the greatest blessing in my life. I grew up with you and you opened my eyes to everything the world had to offer. You had such a zest for life and drive like no one I’ve ever met. 

‘You’re smart, kind, funny, loving, and genuinely one of the best people I’ve had the pleasure of knowing. Like I said in my vows, I’m so grateful to have gotten the chance to live my life at the same time that you lived yours and whether its in this lifetime or the next my heart will always find its way to you. Rest easy my love.’

His sister, Sophie Wehr, posted a collection of childhood photos with her brother and said: ‘James, thank you. I’ll live every day with you in mind and do everything I can to make you proud.’

Wehr co-founded the car show with his father, Simon Wehr, and spent years hosting the meets together every Saturday at the Outlets at San Clemente. 

The organization estimated that from 800 to 2,500 vehicles attend the events. 

‘Getting to see people come out every week and enjoy the show. We see multiple generations of people walking around with their cars, and it’s a great environment. We’re super lucky,’ Wehr previously said of the shows, according to the Post.

Frankie, a friend and fellow car-enthusiast, recalled working with Wehr at a restaurant and watching him ‘become so successful in the automotive industry.’

‘You were someone I truly admired and looked up to,’ he wrote. ‘You always showed me love, while talking more s*** than anyone else could. Things won’t be the same without you around, and I’ll cherish every memory we ever had.’

‘The fact that you supported me and wanted to be the first guest on my podcast meant more to me than you know. You are family bro,’ he continued. 

‘I just wish I had one more chance to laugh with you, hear you talk your s***, and tell you how much you meant to me. I love you and miss you.’

Amanda, another friend and frequenter of South OC Cars and Coffee car meets, described Wehr as a ‘modern day Paul Walker’ and ‘an icon in the car the community.’

‘This will not only rock the local car groups, but it will do so world wide. I have had the pleasure of meeting fans, friends, and followers of his from out of state as well as out of country. You will be missed James. Thank you for creating a community that became a family,’ she wrote. 

‘He was a photographer, car enthusiast, entrepreneur, and more. He was a son, husband, friend, leader, and icon in the car community. He will be forever missed. He passed away on Paul Walkers birthday, if that isn’t a sign or a testament I don’t know what is,’ she wrote on a separate post. 

‘James Wehr, you touched hearts of people from Southern California, to Australia, and even further around the world…We are so proud of him and everything he accomplished in his life time. Though he was taken from us too soon, his memory lives on in each and every one of us. Thank you for creating a community for us James, a family, and a home.’

Jasper, another friend and car enthusiast, said Wehr was one of his ‘biggest inspirations and one to keep pushing me in life for the better part of a decade.’

‘To be honest, there were times where I wanted to be just like you, but in my own way,’ he said.

‘I think we’ve driven thousands of miles together, on rallies, drives, swapping cars and doing road trips together. Plus our trips, events, drinks, cigars, deep talks, and the hundreds of hours we spent together playing games with the rest of them.

‘We had big dreams, big goals, promises we made each other. And when it’s all said and done, and I see you again, you’ll see that we achieved it all. I’m going to miss you, but I’ll never forget you.’

The Daily Mail reached out to the California Highway Patrol, the Irvine Police Department and South OC Cars and Coffee for comment.

The Rhythm & Tunes music festival, originally a free gathering for blues enthusiasts, has evolved over time.

Darlington Rock ‘n’ Blues Club began booking bands that started with Rhythm ‘n’ Blues and later developed their unique styles.

The event is organised by Darlington Borough Council in partnership with Darlington Rock n Blues Club and Gasto Promotions.

Performances were held at venues including The Forum Music Centre, Vesuvio, The Britannia and The Quaker House.

British bands from the 60s and 70s like The Animals, The Yardbirds, Chris Farlowe, and The Pretty Things have previously headlined the festival.

This year’s festival got underway on Friday evening (September 10), with performances from Emily & Stu, Kerrison Collective, The Mainline and Black Caddillac invenues across the town.

The festival’s main Market Square stage hosted tribute acts Blondied, Fu Fighters and Chilifornication on Saturday (September 12).

On Sunday (September 13), music fans enjoyed performances from The Boneshakers, The Addiction, John Verity Band and Band of Friends.

Food and alcohol stalls kept the music lovers refreshed throughout.

Councillor Libby McCollom, Darlington Borough Council’s cabinet member for local services, said the festival has grown significantly over the years.

She said: “One of our ambitions in the Council Plan is to create thriving places and connected communities and nothing brings people together more than music.

“I hope lots of people will come down and enjoy the wide variety of acts who are performing.”

Cllr McCollom also revealed the festival will undergo a revamp next year, with organisers planning a new musical theme designed to embrace an even wider range of music.

A spokesperson for the force said its priority is to get ‘best value for money’

New figures suggest Cambridgeshire Police spent nearly £2 million pounds on uniforms over three years. Freedom of Information figures obtained by Custom Embroidered Patches UK, show the police force spent £1,987,693 on uniform procurement between the 2023/24 and 2025/26 financial years.

A significant amount of uniform is disposed of each year, with the force saying this is due to items often being ‘heavily worn’ or ‘old. It also may include new uniforms for newly recruited officers.

Responding to the claims, a spokesperson for the force said: “Our priority is to get best value for money when procuring and disposing/recycling uniform, and these figures should be seen in context. The total spend on uniform over three years was just under £2 million. This does not however represent the value of kit that is disposed of.

“£529,000 of this figure was spent on items that are recycled or reused where appropriate, including body armour, batons, handcuffs, ballistic plates and metal work such as badges and insignia. Any uniform that is returned unworn goes back into stock, however, returned uniform that is heavily worn or very old, such as when an officer retires, is not reused.”

Their team of 2,819 contains 64 per cent officers and the data showed Cambridgeshire Police reported an average spend of £705 per individual. According to a police force spokesperson, the net figure of £1,458k over the three years also includes dry cleaning costs for loan tunics, lab coats and occasional body armour covers and is therefore not all related to the purchase of kit.

“It is also worth noting that uniform costs over part of this period would have gone up because of the Government uplift programme, which saw the force raise its officer head count by more than 200.”

A dispersal order, giving officers powers to arrest people who have been told to leave the area, is in place for York city centre until midnight on Monday (September 14), North Yorkshire Police said.

The force said extra patrols have also been deployed in the area after officers received reports of “individuals causing a nuisance and damage within business premises, climbing scaffolding, and being involved in shop thefts”. 

“This behaviour is unacceptable and is having a negative impact on businesses, residents and visitors to the city,” a police spokesperson said.

They urged parents and guardians to ensure they know where their children are.

“If you believe your child may be among the groups involved, please contact them and arrange for them to leave the city centre,” the police spokesperson said.

“Our priority is to keep York safe for everyone.”

They added: “Additional patrols are in the area and officers will continue to take robust action against anyone involved in criminality, anti-social behaviour, disorder or theft.

“We would like to thank local businesses and members of the public for their patience and support while officers deal with the situation.

“Anyone who witnesses criminal behaviour or has information about those involved should report it.

“If a crime is in progress or there is an immediate threat to safety, call 999. Otherwise, report information via our website or by calling 101.”

It’s no secret that Prince Harry and Meghan have relocated to the Cotswolds and no one is more delighted than long-term resident Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen. 

The Prince Of Pattern, 61, predicts 45-year-old Meghan’s popularity could soar if she embraces an ordinary life there, emulating down-to-earth Kate Middleton, 44. 

He said: ‘William and Kate live a very ordinary lifestyle for royals. Yes, it’s a very schmanzy lifestyle, it’s very Waitrose, but they don’t have the sort of world you would anticipate if you watched the Princess Diaries. 

‘They don’t even have the opulence you would see Hollywood A-listers having. They take the kids to school, to the rugby fixtures, the flute practise… the ordinary stuff is very part of their lives.

‘I think this is the sort of life Harry wants. If Meghan can lean into that and relax a bit, enjoy it and let us appreciate her for who she actually is, rather than who she feels she ought to be, that’s one of the [important] things. 

‘The thing about Harry is he’s genuine. Sometimes too genuine. That’s why everyone absolutely loved him.

‘When she smiles at someone, it’s like a floodlight. She is absolutely fixed on who they are and what they are saying and what they’re all about and that’s such an incredibly important part of the new royal mystique.

‘The royals used to be quite distant but now, when they do descend from the heavens, when we do bump into them, we want them to be relatable.

‘King Charles is more relatable these days than he has ever been and at this point more relatable than what we have seen of Meghan. 

‘That’s a man who has grown up in an extraordinary way but he really understands his nation. But let’s see where it goes.’ 

Laurence recalled how down-to-earth Harry, 41, was when growing up at Highgrove, saying: ‘Everyone loved Harry for his banter.

‘The amount of times I saw him queuing up for a tandoori or looking very hungover in Waitrose on a Sunday morning, trying to sort out the way he felt before he went to have Sunday lunch with his dad. 

‘Harry is like the Prince Of Bants. With the duchess, it will be a very different life to the one she’s known. 

‘She is going to have to watch the white jeans, because it’s so muddy here. We need to see muddy Meghan at the tandoori. Just by doing that, she’d seduce the nation.

He continued: ‘They will enjoy being themselves a lot more if they let their hair down and let their freak flag fly. We are very down and dirty here and Harry knows that.’

Laurence said the British way of life is quite different to the Californian one. 

‘Meghan has always found it quite difficult to understand that we in Britain are in it for the bants,’ he said. ‘Particularly with our famous people. 

‘When Brits see you in the street, they feel that they are part of your fame. They’ve paid the licence fee. it’s like they are small investors, so they do feel quite proprietorial. 

‘Us Brits express that by being jolly and rather off hand, We’re not sycophantic to famous people and I think Meghan found that really difficult. Whereas, in America, you put people on a pedestal until they really f*** it up.

‘In this country, we are used to seeing Jeremy Clarkson at the chip shop and Nigella on the bus. Being famous doesn’t stop you from being part of society. As long as she understands that. Being royal doesn’t really protect you from that.’

Laurence is convinced that the return to the UK is perfect for the couple because Meghan will be drawn by the A-list international appeal, with the likes of Beyonce, Jay-Z, the Beckhams, Taylor Swift and Ellen DeGeneres all frequenting the area.  

He said: ‘It’s all about childhood memories for him and looking to rebuild your life on an emotional level. He wants his children to have the safe identity that he had. 

‘He had a terrible childhood, there is no shrinking from it. The death of his mother was appalling. 

‘The royal family did an incredible job of trying to support William and Harry but this was a terrible thing to happen. Harry’s going out of his way to make sure a lot of things that happened to him, aren’t going to happen to his children. 

‘This is very much about bringing the children back to have a British education to be part of the British side of their family history and spend more time with the King. 

‘King Charles is working harder than ever but he has his cancer diagnosis. We all realise how fragile life is at that age. I am approaching that age myself. It’s like sniper alley. There’s so much that can go wrong.’

Laurence has previously branded Meghan, The Duchess Of Beige, but hopes the couple will embrace colour in their Cotswolds home.

He said: ‘The majority of Cotwolds houses were built by people who loved pattern and colour. It’s a great celebration of all the countryside outside – but beige is the colour of nature when it has died.

‘They will enjoy being themselves a lot more if they really let their hair down and don’t feel everything has to be perfect, the colour of oatmeal and perfectly manicured. You can do what you want to do here.’ 

In sad news for Meghan and her As Ever business enterprise, Laurence is not a condiment lover, saying: ‘I have never really understood the point of jam.’ 

But he does admit he was ‘rather intrigued by Meghan’s wildflower sprinkles’ and is interested to see how much of her business empire comes to the UK with her. 

‘If I was on Meghan’s team,’ he said. ‘I would be trying to get her in with Lady Bamford who is the great creative driving force behind Daylesford.

‘The Meghan brand would definitely sit very well there if they were looking for a collab.’

Laurence said Meghan needs to hang out at his end of the Cotswolds and would love to extend an invite for an afternoon tea, saying: ‘It’s posh here, but it’s very Jilly Cooper. Very naughty.’
