Games Inbox: Is Saros on PS5 a disappointment?
Saros – have you played it yet? (Sony Interactive Entertainment)

The Tuesday letters page wishes Forza Horizon 6 was coming out on PS5 this month, as a reader is surprised by Sony’s obsession with Until Dawn.

Games Inbox is a collection of our readers’ letters, comments, and opinions. To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@metro.co.uk

Disappointing return
I’ve been playing Saros over the bank holiday weekend, and I was really looking forward to it after enjoying Returnal so much. It has been good, but even after knowing of the drawbacks from GC’s review I still find myself disappointed.

Yes, the combat is amazing. There is no argument from me on that, but I don’t like the story, all the areas I’ve been so far are too samey, and I think the skill tree actually makes it feel more repetitive than before. The underground machine level is the only one that doesn’t look like a rejected biome from Returnal and I don’t find any of the characters sympathetic.

But the problem with the skill tree, I find, is that when you die you come back and unlock a few things but with Returnal it was more subtle than that. You were more looking to see what the new layout was and maybe upgrading your gun a bit, but the focus was on you training yourself up and getting better.

In Saros it almost feels like you’re just dying a set number of times until you’re powered up enough to win. It’s not quite that obvious but I’ve found it quite demoralising at times and the whole thing is just miserable and grey instead of the weird, dreamlike Returnal. It’s good but I’d say it’s a step back and quite disappointing.

New battlefields
I can’t believe there’s a new Star Wars film out in a couple of weeks and I haven’t even bothered to watch the trailer. If my younger self knew that it would absolutely blow his mind, but here we are.

I do agree that the games have been doing a lot better than the films, and been more consistent than TV, even if I don’t feel there’s been a top tier game out of any of them yet. For me the Star Wars Jedi games are slightly overrated. They’re good but the whole Dark Souls thing seems a bad fit to me and some of the level design is very contrived, including in the second one.

I am hoping for the best with Zero Company and the new Knights Of The Old Republic, but I can’t say I’d care too much if Eclipse never happened, given who’s making it. What I’m dying for though, is for them to announce a Battlefront 3.

I worry that the last two weren’t quite big enough though and it’d need a new film with lots of ground action to justify one, and I don’t think anything like that is coming soon. The next film after is Starfighter with Ryan Gosling though, so hopefully that will inspire some new games at least.

Eternal Dawn
For a game that has never been that popular, and where they scared away the original developer so they can’t work on it anymore, Sony sure does have a strange obsession with Until Dawn. Now there’s rumours about another spin-off as a PlayStation 6 game?

I mean, if there’s one thing that’s guaranteed to convince people to part with £500-odd for a console they know they don’t need it’s a spin-off to a 11-year-old interactive horror movie that isn’t very scary. And even if it’s not Until Dawn related the rumour is still something horror-based. Is that really a good idea for a lunch game?

Mad world
The number of times I have to question reality itself when reading the news nowadays is getting truly disturbing, but I didn’t think I’d be doing it with gaming as well. GameStop is going to buy eBay by borrowing $20 billion? GameStop… the shop that sells boxed games and Funko Pops? I don’t even know what to say, except why has the whole world gone mad?

I’d actually forgotten, until you mentioned it, that EA has done the same thing to themselves as well, and that wasn’t even a hostile takeover. Of course, it’ll be superyachts for everyone when it comes to the execs but give it five years, or less, and none of these companies are going to exist anymore.

I’d be surprised if Xbox did either or Ubisoft come to that. It’s all the American companies, of course, so no surprises there and… I’m not sure I even care anyway. They all make so few games nowadays, and the ones they do are so completely uninteresting and safe, that I’d barely notice. If it wasn’t for the thousands of developers that’ll be losing their jobs I’d say good riddance to them.

GC: Ubisoft is French.

Busman’s holiday
Two new indie titles have recently been released and I highly recommend everyone goes and checks these out. They are Restore Your Island from Paiband Game Studio and Bus Simulator: Ultimate from Gamersky Games.

These are good games to own and play and it shows that there are some good indie titles being made. They are currently on Microsoft Windows and hopefully these can come to next generation consoles in the future.

GC: Well, as long as it’s the ultimate bus simulator and not just a run-of-the-mill one.

Timed exclusive
While I don’t disagree that Xbox is a worrying mixture of delusional and running scared, I think the stupidest thing they’ve done lately is not releasing Forza Horizon 6 on PlayStation 5 at the same time as Xbox. They’re going to do all the marketing and making all that fuss and then the format that it’s going to sell the most on has to wait for who knows how many months. It doesn’t make any sense.

If the PlayStation 5 version wasn’t going to be ready until next year I’d get it, but it’s out this year. Why on earth wouldn’t you just delay the Xbox and PC versions until then and have them all come out at the same time, with one big marketing blow out.

The only excuse I can think of, other than stupidity (which I wouldn’t rule out), is that this is what the new Xbox boss means by exclusivity. Having a new game appear on Xbox for a few months early and then going to PlayStation 5.

I can’t really see any benefit in that though and if they think people are going to be so jealous of Xbox they’ll run out and buy a new console, just to get a game a couple of months early, I think Microsoft are going to be very disappointed.

Forza Horizon 6 should’ve been the biggest multiformat release ever for Microsoft and it still probably will be, once it reaches PlayStation 5, but they’re really not dong their best to take advantage of it.

Infinite money glitch
GTA 6 might not ending up cost £100 but I will be surprised if it doesn’t involve some kind of subscription service, probably connected to GTA Online 2.

It probably will be just £70 but there’ll definitely be deluxe versions that will cost much more and I best some kind of thing for the online, where you’ll get free items and money and whatever. They’ll definitely do a battle pass too.

A company as successful as Rockstar knows you don’t need to make all your money just from the first purchase, they can have people paying for years to come. Based on GTA 5, maybe decades.

Keep it coming
I’m actually really glad to see so many Resident Evil rumours going around at the moment. Even if most of them are fake I’ve never seen it like this before, which goes to show just how much bigger Requiem was than usual. I’m not convinced about the movie myself yet, but the extra buzz from that is definitely going to help too.

So, as far as I understand, we’ve got some kind of ‘minigame’ this month, story DLC probably not till next year, and maybe a Code: Veronica remake reveal this summer. It may be a bit early for that under normal circumstances but I feel that with Resident Evil being so hot at the moment Capcom will figure that at least a tease at the next remake will go down well.

As for the idea of bringing in new characters… well, first of all I wouldn’t believe a word Capcom says. They’re not going to give away any plans at this stage and can just say they changed their minds later. I don’t think anyone wants to see the Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny version of Resident Evil but I also don’t want to see Leon and the gang getting turned young again through some Umbrella virus, which I really worry they’re building up to.

At this point I think they need to commit to having them older and bring up a new group of younger characters, which I feel they’re doing well. I think everyone liked Grace and I definitely would like to see her again.

I also don’t see any reason not to do flashback games to their younger days. In a way that’s what the remakes are so when they run out of those just do some of unseen missions of Leon, Jill, Claire, and the rest. What’s clear is the world wants more Resident Evil and hopefully Capcom is happy to provide.

Man United star Harry Maguire lined up for new job during World Cup after brutal England snub

Manchester United star Harry Maguire looks set for a role at the World Cup even after being omitted from Thomas Tuchel’s England squad

Harry Maguire is reportedly set to appear on the The Rest is Football podcast over the World Cup after being left out of the England squad. The Manchester United star was controversially omitted from the list of 26 players named by Thomas Tuchel travelling to the United States, but he will still have a role at the tournament.

Following an impressive season at Old Trafford, Maguire looked to be a shoo-in for one of the defender spots. However, Tuchel opted to take Dan Burn, Jarrel Quansah and Djed Spence instead with Luke Shaw also left out.

An exchange between Tuchel and Maguire followed the major omission with the latter revealing he was shocked by the decision while the England boss admitted he was caught off guard by Maguire’s public response. Though he won’t be playing at the tournament, Maguire will still be making a World Cup-related appearance in the US.

According to The Athletic, the 33-year-old is expected to be one of many guests to appear on The Rest is Football. It was confirmed earlier this year that the weekly football podcast’s production company Goalhanger had signed a £14million deal with Netflix to stream daily versions of the show.

A total of 40 episodes have been planned with Lineker to be joined by regular co-host Alan Shearer in a studio overlooking New York’s Times Square. Regular third presenter Micah Richards will be present in-person for some episodes but will mostly be back in BBC’s virtual studio in Salford.

The World Cup kicks off in just over one week when co-host nation Mexico take on South Africa. England’s final friendly before their tournament starts takes place 24 hours earlier as the Three Lions face Costa Rica in Orlando.

Though the focus for most players is firmly on the World Cup, United have wrapped up their first summer transfer with Ederson set to join from Atalanta in a £38.8million deal.

The 26-year-old being left out of Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad allowed for negotiations to be resolved quickly with the Italian club also open to selling as he had just one year remaining on his contract.

Further midfield additions are expected by Michael Carrick’s side following the departure of Casemiro with Elliot Anderson, Mateus Fernandes, Adam Wharton and Aurelien Tchouameni as others of interest.

United are also looking to strengthen at left-back with Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall appearing as their no.1 target. Arsenal talent Myles Lewis-Skelly and El Hadji Malick Diouf of West Ham United have also been linked.

Sealing exits is another priority with Marcus Rashford, Joshua Zirkzee and Manuel Ugarte among those expected to depart permanently while Jadon Sanch is out of contract.

UK services industry faces setback as activity falls for first time in a year

UK services industry faces setback as activity falls for first time in a year

The UK’s services industry declined last month for the first time in more than a year, as hospitality and travel businesses were among those to feel the impact of the Iran war, according to new figures.

The S&P Global UK services PMI survey showed a reading of 49.3 in May, down from 52.7 in April.

Any reading above 50.0 means the sector is growing while any reading below signals it is contracting.

May’s score marked the first time business activity has decreased since April 2025.

This was mostly driven by a reduction in the amount of new work for businesses, for the third month in a row, although this was only marginal amid signs of ongoing resilience.

Firms surveyed suggested that worries about the conflict in the Middle East had led to some customers pushing back big spending decisions or cutting back on non-essential purchases.

Export sales also fell back in May, which was linked both to uncertain global economic conditions and increasing competition in major markets.

Services businesses are the dominant industry in the UK, spanning those from hospitality, leisure and travel, through to property, financial services and education.

The US-Israeli war in Iran has had significant ramifications around the world due to the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest waterways, since the end of February.

This has cut off the transit of key commodities such as oil and fertiliser from the Middle East and sent global prices soaring.

Businesses in the UK have felt the knock-on impact of rising prices squeezing budgets and weakening consumer sentiment, the latest PMI survey showed.

(PA Graphics)
(PA Graphics) (PA Graphics)

Tim Moore, economics director for S&P Global Market Intelligence, said: “Many service sector companies noted that the Middle East conflict had an adverse impact on sales pipelines and general business prospects.

“Those in the hospitality and transportation sectors typically commented on squeezed discretionary spending and pressure from sharply rising input costs, while professional services firms reported a setback from rising risk aversion among clients.”

Firms were cutting jobs last month at the fastest rate since February, partly in response to higher labour and business costs, according to the survey.

Respondents said it was costing more to run their business, largely because of higher energy, fuel and transport costs.

But Mr Moore added that businesses making investments into technology services was a “bright spot for parts of the service economy” last month.

Matt Swannell, chief economic adviser to the Item Club, said: “We think the economy will continue to lose momentum and flirt with recession in the second half of the year.

“Rising energy bills and a deteriorating jobs market will squeeze households’ spending power further.

“Meanwhile, tighter financial conditions, elevated costs, and prolonged uncertainty will lead businesses to postpone or cancel some investment plans.”

Henry Nowak latest: Police chief condemns violent clashes in Southampton as 11 officers and dog injured
Protesters clash with police in Southampton over murder of Henry Nowak

Eleven officers and one police dog were injured after violent clashes between its officers and protesters near where Henry Nowak was stabbed to death in Southampton, Hampshire Police has said.

Missiles including chairs, cans and flares were thrown at police in riot gear after hundreds gathered as part of a demonstration, where far-right activist Tommy Robinson was among those who spoke to the crowd.

Two people have been arrested, with home secretary Shabana Mahmood condemning the violence as “completely unacceptable”.

Chief constable Alexis Boon said some protesters “arrived intent on causing disorder adn trouble” and said that they had been “forced to deal with those determined to spark fear and division”.

Vickrum Digwa, 23, was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 21 years for murdering the 18-year-old finance student in Southampton.

Footage shows that Mr Nowak, 18, was handcuffed while he lay dying after Digwa told officers he had racially abused him. He is heard saying: “I’ve been stabbed,” to which an officer replies: “Don’t think you have, mate.”

An officer involved in the case has resigned, Hampshire Police say, after Sir Keir Starmer said he “felt sick” watching footage of police handcuffing the student as he lay dying.

The force said one of the officers had quit but three were still serving.

What happened on Tuesday evening?

Two people were arrested for assaulting police and possession of a weapon after hundreds gathered outside Southampton Central Police Station on Tuesday where Tommy Robinson – real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon – and actor and campaigner Laurence Fox were among those who spoke to the crowd.

Hampshire Police said the number of arrests would increase as investigations continue into the disorder.

Violent scenes broke out after a large group walked across town to the area of Portswood.

Demonstrators chanted “Henry, Henry” as the line of police were pelted with bricks.

Chairs, cans and flares were thrown at police in riot gear, eventually forcing officers and three police vans back from the line they had been holding.

Full statement from Hampshire Police after ‘violent scenes’ in Southampton

In a written statement, Hampshire Police chief constable Alexis Boon said: “We understand and appreciate as police officers that we are accountable for our actions. What we ask, however, is that those actions are judged through fair and transparent processes. In this case, that process is already under way with the IOPC conducting their independent investigation.

“What we, as a society, cannot accept is the violent scenes we saw in Southampton last night.

“Some clearly arrived intent on causing disorder and trouble. We saw bottles thrown, makeshift weapons used, damage caused to the homes and vehicles of innocent residents, and threats and violence directed towards our officers.

“As a result, 11 officers and one police dog were injured, while trying to do their job to protect the communities that we serve.

“While we are forced to deal with those determined to spark fear and division, our finite resources are taken away from those who need it most.

“I know how intimidating the scenes from last night must have been for those living and working in the area, and to you I must stress we have incredibly experienced teams of officers who are working around the clock to keep you safe – that is our absolute priority.

“You will see more of my officers patrolling your neighbourhoods over the coming days and specialist intelligence teams are supporting those on the front line.

“My officers bravely and robustly faced violence with professionalism and courage last night, and this morning our investigation is under way to identify those responsible for the disorder.

“Last night, we made two arrests and that number will rise as those investigations continue.

“I know that since the release of the body-worn video footage from the night of Henry Nowak’s murder there is a desire for answers and accountability, but that must be done in the right way and not used as an excuse to threaten and intimidate my officers and bring violence to our streets, causing fear and harm to those living and working in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.”

Badenoch says Henry Nowak’s killing a moment like Stephen Lawrence murder

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has called the killing of student HenryNowak a “seminal moment for Britain” on par with the murder of teenager Stephen Lawrence in 1993.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage also described the 18-year-old finance student’s death as “a watershed moment for this country”.

Writing in the Daily Mail, Mrs Badenoch said: “Henry’s murder and the police’s botched response must be a seminal moment for Britain on a par with the murder of Stephen Lawrence, the black teenager killed in 1993, which precipitated the Macpherson Report six years later, which found the Metropolitan Police to be ‘institutionally racist’.

“Stephen’s murder forced the country to confront the intolerable and say: ‘This is not who we are’. Indeed, many battles have been won in making our society better and fairer since then.”

Mrs Badenoch also criticised then Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer and his then deputy Angela Rayner for kneeling amid Black Lives Matter protests following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis while being restrained by a white police officer in 2020.

“Why are they not kneeling now for Henry Nowak?” she asked, saying the police response to the stabbing had “exposed devastating failures”, although she said police in the UK are no longer institutionally racist.

Nigel Farage is conducting a culture war over Henry Nowak’s grave

Henry Nowak deserved better. In December, the 18-year-old student was stabbed multiple times while on his way home from a night out in Southampton.

As he lay bleeding on the pavement, he pleaded “I can’t breathe” repeatedly to the attending police officers, who, instead of administering aid, put him in handcuffs and arrested him. The last thing he heard before he died was an officer reading him his rights.

His assailant had made false claims that Nowak had racially abused him, punched him and knocked off his turban.

Analysis: Farage and Tommy Robinson stoke the political flames of anger over Henry Nowak

Our political editor David Maddox says:

Nigel Farage’s silence on the protests in Southampton over the Henry Nowak murder and the police handling of it is deafening.

The Reform UK leader does everything he can not to be associated with the far right leader Tommy Robinson who was behind those violent protests.

But the two hold common cause in a way, in politicising this tragedy after Farage’s call for “rage” in response to what happened.

And it has certainly ratcheted up what was already a tense situation. The prime minister Keir Starmer must be concerned that we could see riots again as we did after the Southport murders.

If you look at the measured and thoughtful response from Kemi Badenoch, the Tory leader, she clearly is worried about that too.

It will be for the government and political establishment to consider whether the anti-racism measures in policing have gone too far.

A simple “we don’t have two tier justice” will not wash with the increasingly angry people on the streets.

More importantly, this is set to become a major issue in the Makerfield by-election where Andy Burnham is hoping to win for Labour en route to becoming PM.

He needs to articulate answers to a constituency that is 97 per cent white working class and already feels overlooked.

Minister unable to say there is no two-tier policing in Britain

A government minister was unable to say there is “no two-tier policing” in Britain in the wake the Henry Nowak murder.

Policing minister Sarah Jones said instead that in principle “everyone is equal under the law”, but admitted there are “examples of people making the wrong call in different ways”.

Asked if there is two-tier policing in the UK, she told BBC Radio 4: “I would say that the principles are important, that everyone is equal under the law.

“I would say that there are 100,000 999 calls a day, and that in the majority of cases, the police are doing the right thing, making the right decisions in the right way. But I would also say that wherever there are mistakes – and this is I think a case where the country is looking to us to make sure we learn the lessons and put anything wrong right – that we continue to strive to do that.

“But the principles of what our policing by consent foundations are based on, equality under the law, that is the basis of our entire society.”

Pushed on whether there are examples o two-tier policing she said: “I think we see examples of people making the wrong call in different ways. In the main, that is not what we see. I think to push a certain sort of agenda in this case is not helpful.”

Kemi Badenoch calls for state institutions to ‘root out all identity politics’

Tory leader Kemi Badenoch said “pernicious identity politics” had seen the country “going backwards”.

In a Daily Mail article, she said there was a need to “sweep out a lot of the historic, incoherent nonsense that has been brought in under the guise of anti-racism”.

She said: “I have said that we are going to root out all identity politics from state institutions – from removing diversity requirements from defence procurement to scrapping preferential sentencing for minorities.

“But it can’t end there. No other political party has a plan for integration and assimilation.”

She added she was “disturbed” by Nigel Farage’s video response, and said that his words were part of a “toxic tribal politics that divides our country”.

Back to Yimbly, the VegTrug Raised Wooden Planter Herb Garden has had some great reviews online. This happy reviewer shared: “Good sturdy planter with good-sized pockets for herbs, etc.

“There are liners supplied for each section, which keep damp compost off the wood, thereby protecting it. Easy to assemble with a sturdy screwdriver and reasonable strength in one’s hands.”

Meanwhile, a shopper via John Lewis said: “This herb planter is great for keeping all my favourite herbs together in one place. I can maintain and harvest the herbs easily and place the planter in a sunny position.”

However, someone noted via Robert Dyas: “It’s well made and fits together well. Very easy to assemble. However, I do wonder whether it will last very long; the wood is very soft, and I suspect it will only last a year or two before it rots.

On a brighter note, this VegTrug fan piped up: “Excellent addition to the garden, easy to put together and now full of veg plants. Really happy with the result – perfect size and great price too.” And another customer simply added: “Looks good. Sturdy.”

Kirsty Hanson

Aston Villa forward Kirsty Hanson is set to join Tottenham following an impressive season in the Women’s Super League.

The Scotland international finished as the league’s third highest goalscorer with 12 goals in 22 matches – only Khadija Shaw and Alessia Russo scored more.

Villa’s top scorer was named their player of the year and she scooped up WSL Football’s goal-of-the-season award for her strike against West Ham.

In May, BBC Sport reported that Spurs were pursuing Hanson and it is now believed they have had a bid accepted by Villa and are set to bring her in this month.

Personal terms are being finalised as Hanson – who has scored five goals in 44 Scotland appearances – prepares to join Tottenham in what will be another boost to Martin Ho’s squad.

The 28-year-old had a year remaining on her contract at Villa and it is unknown what fee Tottenham have agreed to sign her for.

She will reunite with Spurs manager Ho, who she worked with at former club Manchester United while he was assistant coach.

Tottenham had a strong campaign in 2025-26, finishing fifth in the table in Ho’s first season in charge after joining from SK Brann.

They will be ambitious in the transfer window and have already secured the signings of West Ham forward Shekiera Martinez and Dutch defender Caitlin Dijkstra.
