Hard Right spectre looms over the EU: SUE REID investigates how anti-immigration parties stormed from the fringes and are now poised to take power for the first time since the Nazi era

Published

on

The rise of the Right across Europe is being spearheaded from the German medieval city of Magdeburg, where today a nationalist party is expected to seize power for the first time since Nazism was destroyed and Hitler committed suicide in a Berlin bunker.

Our map shows that 81 years later, more than half of the EU’s 27 member states – from Italy to Finland – are now ruled, or influenced, by Right-wing parties and factions that question the virtues of uncontrolled mass immigration.

Nowhere is the defiance against Brussels’ multicultural agenda starker than in Magdeburg, the former East German communist capital of Saxony-Anhalt, where the result of the epoch-making state parliament elections are due tonight.

Final opinion polls reveal a runaway lead of 41 per cent for the contentious Alternative for Germany (AFD) party, 13 years after it emerged as a fringe anti-immigration outfit.

The centre-Left magazine Der Spiegel has asked whether AFD’s leader in the state, the charismatic Ulrich Siegmund, is ‘the most dangerous man in Germany?’

Yet the party’s popularity has been on the rise, say academics, since former Chancellor Angela Merkel opened Germany’s doors – and effectively those of the EU – to 1.3 million migrants in 2015, many of them fleeing war in Syria.

As leader of the centrist Christian Democratic Union (CDU) government at the time, she declared ‘We can do it’, confidently insisting that the country could handle the relentless swathes of newcomers.

Today the CDU faces a voters’ backlash across Germany.

British historian Timothy Garton Ash has said: ‘The dramatic influx of refugees is the single most direct cause of the AFD’s electoral success.’

Professor Andreas Rodder, contemporary history expert at Germany’s Mainz University, predicts an attempted ‘firewall’ – whereby all mainstream parties, particularly the CDU, resolve not to co-operate, form coalitions or govern with the AFD – will fail to stop the party taking power.

In and around Magdeburg, tens of thousands of excited AFD supporters were staging rallies this weekend before heading for voting stations.

Already the party is the main opposition, holding 152 seats out of 630 in the Bundestag, Germany’s parliament – with numerous polls showing it would win outright power if a national election was held today.

And while this country, and many others in Europe, have been plagued by migrant crime or terror atrocities, voters here in Magdeburg have their own particular tragic memories.

In 2016 I first visited the city to report on the story of a 19-year-old university student who was gang-raped by three Afghan men from a refugees’ housing block. Having ambushed her, they dragged her into nearby bushes.

In 2024, a BMW 4×4 was driven through the city’s Christmas market, ramming 309 people and killing six, including a nine-year-old boy, in what police described as a ‘rampage’ by a 50-year-old Saudi-born psychiatrist and refugee who was later jailed for life.

None of this is forgotten (or indeed forgiven), particularly by young Germans enticed by the AFD’s slick social media messages warning of the dangers of mass immigration, and promising that migrants who enter the country illegally will be sent home.

For teenagers and those in their 20s, the hideous evils of the Third Reich were committed long ago, and they feel it is now their own futures that are at stake. One rallying slogan – ‘More Bismarck, less Hitler’ – has caught their eye.

It is a message that insists the school history curriculum should emphasise less the horrific atrocities of the Nazi period and more Germany’s triumphant past, not least the 19th century rule of Otto von Bismarck.

The so-called Iron Chancellor unified the country, began its empire and introduced old-age pensions and health insurance to undercut socialism’s appeal.

At an evening rally in Haldensleben, a village near Magdeburg, I spoke to teenagers preparing to vote.

An 18-year-old factory worker, Elias Megankoth, who was waving an AFD poster, told me: ‘Migrant criminals should be put in jail or leave the country.’

Another youngster, just 16, added: ‘We are Generation Germany and we support remigration to send home foreigners who break our laws.’

Meanwhile, Max Reinecke, 17, said he had been to ten rallies of different political parties but had decided that when he is old enough to vote at 18 it will be for AFD.

‘We are living through the consequences of migrants in our classrooms, on our streets,’ he said. ‘It is time for our voice to be heard. We are the future.’

A few streets away I met migrants who now fear a reckoning. Babe Fall, 31, is from Mali, a country rocked by Islamic insurgency, and stopped his bicycle to talk to me.

He said he works as a delivery driver and is frightened: ‘I think I will experience aggression against me if the AFD win.’

At the high street barber’s shop I met Kamir Hashemi, 31, who came to Germany in 2016 with a huge family contingent of five brothers, his parents and his wife.

‘I like Frau Merkel,’ he said with a grin. ‘I could never go back to Afghanistan where my two daughters would wear a face covering and be barred from school. The German people are respectful to us, but I expect an AFD victory will change that.’

His words were echoed by another barber, a Syrian Kurd aged 31 who refused to give me his name.

He said that in his salon, near Kamir’s own, there was ‘real fear’ among his Iranian and Iraqi customers. ‘They are scared they will be made to leave Germany with their families immediately if the AFD wins.’

The Saxony-Anhalt election is a microcosm of rising migrant scepticism across the EU.

Over the border in France, National Rally’s Marine Le Pen leads polls ahead of the presidential election next year, with a promise to hold a referendum on whether Muslim women should be allowed to wear the hijab.

Support for Right-wing populist parties in Poland, Portugal, Croatia and elsewhere is soaring, but resistance to illegal immigration is nowhere more virulent than in Spain.

A border invasion of Ceuta, Spain’s North African enclave, by tens of thousands of Moroccans and sub-Saharans in July, has hardened hearts.

No fewer than 22 EU member states have criticised Madrid’s ultra-Left government for threatening the security of the entire bloc as result of its failure to halt mass immigration.

As the problems in Ceuta escalate – with new reports of migrants running amok and committing rapes of fellow migrants, including four children – Spain’s socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is under enormous pressure to resign.

Mass protests have been held across the country and Right-wing parties are capitalising.

A snap poll reveals that if an election was held this weekend, Sanchez’s ruling Socialist Workers’ Party would be trounced by a coalition of the Conservative

People’s Party and the hard-Right Vox Party, which together would have an absolute majority in the Madrid parliament.

What would follow is an amendment of the constitution to allow tougher rules on borders and immigration. The prevailing mood in Europe is unmistakable.

As our map shows, the political landscape is changing fast, in a revolution just as seismic as 11 years ago, when Germany, attempting to atone for its Nazi history, welcomed with bunting and balloons any stranger who knocked on the door.

What now for Richarlison? Tottenham striker's transfer options revealed as Trabzonspor move falls through

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Saudi Arabia now looks to be a likely destination. A steady stream of past-their-prime Premier League talents have headed to the Middle East in past campaigns, and Richarlison’s endeavours will be helped by the fact the Saudi Pro League’s transfer window does not close until October 12.

Enzo Maresca makes Arsenal squad claim after Man City beat Coventry | Football
Enzo Maresca says his Man City squad have ‘options’ to rival Arsenal

Enzo Maresca believes Manchester City now have the squad depth to rival Arsenal following his side’s 1-0 win over Coventry City on Saturday.

Erling Haaland’s first-half header sealed the win at the Etihad Stadium but City needed an brilliant performance from Gianluigi Donnarumma to keep a clean sheet against Coventry.

City made a strong end to the summer transfer window as they signed Ayyoub Bouaddi for £86 million last week before spending £65m on Iliman Ndiaye and £125m on Enzo Fernandez on deadline day.

Last season’s Premier League runners-up also spent £116m on Elliot Anderson earlier in the summer, while their £458m total is a new Premier League record for a summer window.

‘If you see since the Community Shield, we played the Community Shield and then Arsenal played two more games [against Coventry and Aston Villa] and they have five changes in every game,’ said Maresca.

Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith flashes Heisman pose in opener

Ohio State's Jeremiah Smith flashes Heisman pose in opener

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Jeremiah Smith has said that if he’s going to win the Heisman Trophy, he’ll need a season like the one Alabama’s DeVonta Smith had while winning in 2020.

The Ohio State junior started making his case Saturday, matching one of Smith’s many accomplishments in the process.

Smith had eight receptions for 151 yards and struck a Heisman pose after his second touchdown during top-ranked Ohio State’s 56-3 victory over Ball State.

He became the third receiver since 2015 from a Power Four conference to have at least two games with at least 150 receiving yards and two touchdowns in one half. DeVonta Smith had four at Alabama and Ja’Marr Chase did it three times at LSU.

“It was a good start. Came out playing fast as an offense, defense made stops,” Smith said. “The first drive (a three-and-out) we didn’t come out how we wanted to. Second drive we came out and executed and scored a touchdown. Felt like we had a good day on offense for sure.”

Smith did not play during the second half with next week’s matchup with fifth-ranked Texas looming.

“As you can imagine, when the game plans are being put together, he’s very much at the front of Arthur (Smith) and the offensive staff’s mind,” coach Ryan Day said of Smith. “Not everything is designed that way, but I thought the game plan was suited to make sure that he touched the ball. He did a great job making some plays, and Julian (Sayin) did a good job of getting him the ball.”

Smith provided plenty of highlights and film for Texas to mull over during the first and second quarter.

His first catch of the season was a 48-yard touchdown up the right sideline to put the Buckeyes up 7-0. Smith got separation from safety Sterling Smith on a play-action pass by Sayin before making a one-handed, over-the-shoulder grab in the end zone.

“He (Smith) had leverage on him and I felt like he (the safety) was kind of flatfooted and we were going to be able to run by him,” Sayin said. “Jeremiah made a great catch and ran a great route and the offensive line did a great job in protection. So it was fun to see all 11 kind of make that play happen.”

Smith’s second TD was the type that makes NFL scouts and coaches do double takes and was worthy of the Heisman pose. He caught a 3-yard pass in the back of the end zone while being covered but was able to get both feet in. Smith had five receptions for 74 yards on that drive, which gave the Buckeyes a 35-3 advantage going into halftime.

It also showed how Sayin and Smith’s chemistry continues to improve.

“I think you saw on the second touchdown today, we kind of knew what each other was thinking to kind of go back shoulder like that,” said Sayin, who completed 21 of 25 passes for 320 yards and three touchdowns.

Smith already had the Longhorns on his mind as he left the locker room. Even though Ohio State has won the last two meetings, Texas has held Smith to a total of seven catches for 46 yards and no touchdowns.

“I’m always looking forward to a matchup like this. They are definitely loaded, got a great defense and we have to be prepared for that,” he said.

‘I want to give back to the hospital staff who saved my baby’s life’

Published

on

Belfast Live

Baby Patrick was very unwell after being born prematurely in June of this year.

A Northern Ireland dad says staff at a Belfast hospital inspired him to attempt to break a rowing record after they saved his baby son’s life.

Rory O’Connor’s son Patrick was very unwell after being born prematurely with respiratory distress syndrome in June of this year. Thanks to the incredible care, support and hard work of the staff of the Ulster Hospital, Patrick’s life was saved.

In the coming weeks, Rory, who is Strangford Integrated College’s Vice Principal and a former international rower, is taking on an incredible challenge to raise funds for the hospital’s Neonatal Unit.

“Patrick arrived prematurely on June 17 and he was quite unwell when he was born. He had infant respiratory distress syndrome so he was struggling to breathe and ended up in the NICU. He was on oxygen for a period of time and tube fed,” Rory told Belfast Live.

Rory, who along with Victoria are also proud parents to 8-year-old Mollie, added: “When Patrick was born he was really struggling to get air in. The team scooped him up and got him away quite quickly to be put on oxygen and tube feed him for a number of days.

“It was absolutely terrifying but he’s doing great now and absolutely thriving which is good to see. It was about 10 days before we got him home, but he was in the ICU for seven days and a couple of those days were touch-and-go.

“The staff went above and beyond in every way and I am forever grateful for them and everything they do. They saved his life and I was absolutely blown away by how they cared for so many unwell babies.

“As soon as we left the hospital with Patrick I told my wife Victoria that ‘I have to get something back here’,” he added.

With Patrick now thriving at home, Co Offaly native Rory, who is a member of Lagan Scullers Club and Olderfleet Coastal Rowing Club, is now preparing for his huge challenge. Rory, 39, is aiming for a world record attempt on the North Channel between Northern Ireland and Scotland unaided.

On his solo 22 mile solo run from Carrickfergus to Portpatrick, he’ll also be aiming to break the current record of 3 hours and 35 minutes, set in 1997 by Belfast man John Murray.

Rory added: “Rowing has been my sport for years and years. I rowed in the Irish team when I was younger, at the World Championships and I’ve won five Irish senior titles in flat water rowing. About five or six years ago I took an interest in coastal rowing and finished 11th in the world in 2024 at The World Rowing Coastal Championships.

“The challenge I’ll be doing uses a river boat on the sea because that’s how the original record was set. I have to make sure I get a good weather window to complete it and at the moment that’s between September 17-20. I get up at about 5am and do all my training quite early in the morning, so I can spend my evenings with the family.

“All proceeds minus safety boat costs will be donated directly to the Ulster Hospital Neonatal Unit. Please support me in this challenge by donating what you can, or by sharing this with as many of your contacts as possible so the next sick mum or baby can receive the same level of care and compassion that we experienced.”

I think I know what PS6 and Xbox is planning for the next gen – Reader’s Feature

I think I know what PS6 and Xbox is planning for the next gen - Reader’s Feature
Are Sony and Microsoft following the same plan? (Metro)

With Sony and Microsoft dropping hints as to their plans for the PS6 and Project Helix, a reader believes he’s already worked out their secrets.

Although everyone else is obsessed with GTA 6 at the moment (I get it, but it’s just not my thing) I’m more interested in trying to figure out what Sony and Microsoft are planning for the next generation. We have had lots of clues and the biggest came this week when Microsoft admitted that Project Helix is more than just one console.

It’s very hard to understand why Microsoft would make a new console at all, given the last two have sold so little, but they’ve gone on about it so much it would absolute sink any last bit of respect anyone had for Xbox if they cancelled it now.

If they were a normal company they absolutely would but they’re so rich nothing really matters to them. I’m not too interested in Xbox myself, but what does interest me is that their plan for the next gen seems to be very similar to Sony, with both planning multiple devices, one of which is a portable.

I admit nothing is confirmed but Sony and Microsoft have both dropped enough hints about a portable that there doesn’t seem to be any reason to doubt they’re making one. The question is why? Obviously the Switch 1 and 2 are popular but to make a portable or hybrid console that was more powerful than the PlayStation 5 (i.e. the PlayStation 6) would make it ridiculously expensive.

So the portables can’t be next gen, they must be based on current gen tech or earlier. Which makes perfect sense when you remember Sony has a weird tech that downscales the graphics in a game in order to ‘save power.’ Which is obviously not what it’s for at all. It’s blatantly for some sort of handheld that’s going to be a bit less powerful than a PlayStation 5 but can still play its games.

Expert, exclusive gaming analysis

Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Delivered to your inbox every Saturday morning.

That’s a plan that makes some sort of sense, although it’s still going to be very expensive, probably not much less than a standard PlayStation 5. But it’s also not really a PlayStation 6, so what must be happening is that both Sony and Microsoft are planning a hyper expensive next gen console, that’s going to be a grand or more – just as already predicted – but I would guess that it won’t have any exclusives.

Instead, everything will work on a PlayStation 5 and that means the current console, the portable, and the PlayStation 6. Microsoft implied even more devices than two but I’m not sure what that could mean, other than something halfway between the two, that’s inspired by the Xbox Series S.

The end result is that there isn’t really going to be a next gen at all. There’s just going to be what we’ve already got repackaged into portable form and what will basically be a Super PS5 Pro. But they’ll still all play the same games.

Xbox Series X console with disc being placed inside.
Whatever else happens in the next gen it won’t involve discs (Microsoft)

It’s kind of an acknowledgement that there doesn’t need to be a next gen, but Sony and Microsoft need to sell hardware, so they’ve got to come up with some reason for you to part with your money.

I just don’t see it working though. I’m sure there’ll be a small minority that want the most powerful console, or a portable version of the PlayStation 5, but not many normal people. Not given what they’re going to have to cost, thanks to the component crisis.

What we need right now is for consoles to get cheaper (and making games to get cheaper) but even this half-generation move forward is still just going to end up with higher price tags and less ordinary people owning consoles.

The only hope, as I see it, is to have a console that is cheaper than the PlayStation 5. Perhaps that is part of the plan, but if it is it’s the only thing they haven’t hinted at yet. I will say this though, if their only plan is to sell even more expensive consoles then that’s not going to work for a second. And I can’t believe they don’t realise that.

Emergency services rush to home after boy, 12, impaled on door as game goes badly wrong

Manchester Evening News

Warning: This story contains graphic images

These shocking photographs reveal how a simple game of tag took a devastating turn – leaving a schoolboy impaled on a door handle for an hour.

Natalie Davey was finishing her shift at work when she noticed several missed calls from her son Ollie Davey, who had been visiting a friend’s house in Cwmbran, Wales.

The 35-year-old recounted how one of Ollie’s friends rang to tell her that his left arm had become lodged in a door handle and that an ambulance had been summoned.

While the hairdresser initially dismissed the boys as being “dramatic”, she was horrified when they sent her a photograph of the 12-year-old’s impaled arm and felt “sick”.

Ollie explained that the group had been playing tag when somebody slammed the door, accidentally catching his arm in the process, reports the Daily Star.

Stomach-churning images show the youngster’s forearm with the unmistakeable outline of the metal handle clearly visible beneath his skin.

By the time Natalie arrived on the scene, Ollie had already been trapped for approximately an hour, with paramedics and firefighters working to establish how to safely release him.

An air ambulance was ultimately called so that medics could sedate Ollie before firefighters and paramedics successfully freed his arm from the handle.

Ollie was rushed to The Grange University Hospital, where doctors were concerned he may have sustained serious tendon damage, however he ultimately required only surgery to clean and stitch the wound.

The youngster was discharged that evening before returning to hospital early the following morning for an operation. Natalie, a mother of two, revealed that her son has since made a complete recovery and has returned to riding his bike and playing football following a week-long course of antibiotics.

Ollie, from Cwmbran in south Wales, said: “It was a game of tag. We were running around in the house and someone slammed the door and I put my arm to stop it from slamming on me and the door handle went through my arm.

“It did hurt but it wasn’t that bad, I was scared.”

Natalie explained that she became aware something was wrong when she noticed several missed calls from Ollie. Natalie said: “I was about to leave work and saw I had a few missed calls from him [Ollie]. I assumed he wanted a lift or some money.

“When I phoned back one of his friends answered and said he had his arm stuck in the door handle and that they had called an ambulance.

“I didn’t think it was going to be what it was, I thought they were being a bit dramatic. He sent me a photo and I could see his arm was actually stuck on the door handle.

“When I got there, there were paramedics and firemen, they were trying to come up with a plan. They had to call an air ambulance to sedate him.

“They sedated him and when he had gone to sleep, they managed to take him off the door handle, just by pulling him out. I couldn’t look.

“He was grey and sweaty when I got there, I think he was in shock. He was in pain [but] he wasn’t crying. He was really brave. I was shocked, I felt sick. It still doesn’t feel quite real that that’s what he did. I was very worried about him, I felt better once he was off the door.”

A grateful Natalie said Ollie’s friends were ‘amazing’ looking after him while they waited for help.

Natalie said: “They were just messing around. He went to the living room and as he was running his arm was behind him.

“Someone went to slam the door and his arm didn’t get out of the way quick enough. He said he didn’t realise immediately it was his arm. His friends were all amazing, they all looked after him. He had a bit of weakness in his arm to start with but now he seems fine, so they’re not worried at all.

“He gets a bit sore around the wound but he’s back to being his normal self and on his bike and playing football.”

Relieved that the incident didn’t lead to more severe harm, Natalie is now telling Ollie’s story to draw attention to the potential hazards of boisterous play indoors.

Natalie said: “I thought maybe he would damage his bones or have more serious injuries, he was really lucky. It’s the running and the doors. You don’t think it’s going to happen, but it can happen to anyone really.

“It was a complete freak accident.”

UK travellers face EU border checks from September 7

UK travellers face EU border checks from September 7

People flying from Britain to countries such as Spain and France are being told to be aware of the new Entry/Exit System (EES).

The automated border check is for all non-EU nationals and comes into full force on Monday, September 7.

What is the Entry/Exit System and what does it mean for the UK?

The system means anyone from third-party countries such as the UK will have to register their fingerprints and have their photograph taken before entering certain countries.

The countries this applies to are the Schengen Area, which consists of 29 European countries.

The EES was first launched back in April and caused incredibly long queues for many travellers.

A few countries have been able to pause these checks in “exceptional circumstances” such as when queues are getting too long.

However, from September 7, they will no longer be able to do this.

Places such as Greece, France, and Spain have all temporarily paused the EES during some of the countries’ busiest periods like the summer holidays.

People travelling have been told to leave extra time when getting through the border and they should expect queues.

The government has released some advice and information about the new system.

The government website says: “On your first visit to the Schengen area, you may be asked to create a digital record at the port or airport on arrival.

“You may be asked to submit your fingerprints and have your photo taken at dedicated booths.

“You don’t need to provide any information before travelling to a Schengen area country.

“The checks may take slightly longer than previously, so be prepared to wait during busy times.

“If you enter the Schengen area through the Port of Dover, Eurotunnel Le Shuttle at Folkestone or Eurostar, St Pancras International, any EES checks will be completed at the border, before you leave the UK.

US Open 2026 results: Zheng Qinwen beats Madison Keys from match point down to reach fourth round

Qinwen Zheng falls to the ground in celebration after beating Madison Keys

Zheng Qinwen described her US Open third-round comeback win over Madison Keys as a “very dramatic match” – but that is somewhat of an understatement.

The Olympic champion, who had to come through qualifying to reach the main draw, found herself 5-0 and match point down in the third set against Keys.

But Zheng held firm and reeled off seven games in a row to secure a remarkable 1-6 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 victory over the 22nd seed and crowd favourite.

Keys, who won the 2025 Australian Open, appeared to be cruising towards a commanding victory after wrapping up the opening set in just 23 minutes.

But Zheng, who is rebuilding her career after undergoing elbow surgery last year, rallied, clinching it on a tie-break before snatching victory from the jaws of defeat against the American.

Zheng threw herself to the floor in relief and reflected afterwards on a difficult 12 months in which she has questioned if she will rediscover her form.

“Finally, a bit of luck is on my side,” the 23-year-old said.

“I am just telling myself ever give up. Somehow, little by little, it’s just happened.

“Tennis sometimes feels like rollercoaster. You see many times people have a match point, but at the end we made a comeback.”

The Chinese star is the first qualifier to reach the women’s fourth round at the US Open since Britain’s Emma Raducanu, who went on to win the 2021 title.

Swansea City player ratings as defence shines in Wrexham stalemate

Published

on

Wales Online

Swansea City played out a goalless draw with Welsh rivals Wrexham at the Swansea.com Stadium.

The result leaves Swansea top of the league, but there was perhaps some frustration after the Swans dominated possession.

Here’s how the players rated on the night.

Lawrence Vigouroux 7

Alert to deny Moore late on with a really good save.

Josh Key 7

Made some really good runs early on after being clattered by Ryan Longman early on. Heavily involved going forward for much of evening.

Filip Lissah 6

Nothing to really take too much issue with, but wasn’t quite as eye-catching as previous outings. Subbed.

Stephen Welsh 7

Really good in the air. Made some good interceptions and several important clearances. Composed in possession too.

Josh Tymon 7 – STAR MAN

Creative outlet for most of the night. Put a few decent balls into he box. Made some good runs and mopped up the second balls really well.

Jay Fulton 6

Mopped up well at the base of midfield, but ran out of steam a little in the second half. Subbed.

Moussa Yeo 6

Decision-making let him down on occasion, but got himself into good positions. Nearly teed up Vipotnik for a late winner.

Melker Widell 6

Snapped around the defence really well, especially on the second balls. Had an early shot blocked. Final ball let him down, however. Subbed.

Stephen Eustaquio 6

As with many others. Final ball was too often lacking after some promising build-up. The notable exception being his pass for Yeo that should have led to a goal.

Eom Jisung 6

Got into some good positions and put some decent balls in at times. But was unable to really open up the Wrexham defence. Subbed.

Adam Idah 6

Some really good touches when dropping deep. Ran his socks off all night, but didn’t really see much of a sight at goal. Subbed.
