The aristocrat has stirred up controversy with several TV interviews in which he made a series of claims against his former brother-in-law. Buckingham Palace responded to an explosive claim, from earlier this week, that King Charles said “we’ll forget her soon enough” after Diana’s death.

In response, the Palace said “the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason”.

The Mirror reports that Earl Charles Spencer, in an interview with the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg released in full on Sunday, opened up about his sister’s death while also commenting on his nephews Prince William and Prince Harry. Here are several bombshell claims from Earl Spencer’s TV interview:

Charles had a ‘giddy tone’ after Diana died

Earl Spencer claimed the then-Prince Charles had a “giddy tone” and sounded like a “lottery winner”.

“He was telling me how he had told the boys, William and Harry, at Balmoral and broken the news to them. And, I felt, as I say in the book actually, I felt there was a sort of giddy tone. I had a lot of calls that day from people who cared, who were stunned like we all were and I just felt there was a lightness in his tone about Diana’s death that really jarred with me.”

When asked about claims in his book that the King was “giddily elated like a lottery winner”, the Earl said: “I’m reporting, every word of this book, I report exactly as I saw it and felt it at the time and I was surprised at the giddiness of his tone. That’s what I am recording there.”

Earl initially told crash was ‘not too serious’

The Earl said he had been living in Cape Town, South Africa, at the time and was called in the middle of the night by his sister Lady Jane Fellows and told Diana was in a crash.

He said: “I got a call in the middle of the night and it was my sister Jane and she said ‘don’t worry Diana’s been in a car crash but it’s not too serious’.”

Earl Spencer said he watched the news throughout the night and got more “distressing” calls from home until his sister’s husband, who worked as the late-Queen’s private secretary, revealed Diana had died. He said: “It started… as a little prang, and then it became a broken leg, perhaps a head injury, and then death.”

Book will ‘not be a surprise to William and Harry’

The Earl suggested Diana’s sons would not be “surprised” over the claims and contents in his soon-to-be released memoir.

Earl Spencer said: “I don’t like to talk about what I’ve been speaking about to William and Harry but this will not be a surprise to them I will tell you that. These words will not be a surprise to them.”

On the two Princes, the Earl also claimed Diana “wouldn’t have wanted” her young sons to walk behind her coffin at her funeral. Earl Spencer also claimed he argued with the then-Prince Charles over this decision over a phone call.

In the BBC interview, he claimed: “I said, ‘Well, of course not, sir, she wouldn’t want it’. And then he said, ‘Well, I walked behind Lord Mountbatten’s coffin.’ And I said, ‘Yes, but you were 30 and he wasn’t your mother’.”

Coverage of Harry & Meghan having ‘cancerous influence’

Earl Spencer claimed the treatment of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex bears “echoes” of what his sister experienced.

He said his sister was “really brought low” by “criticism” she received from the media. He added it was a “pity” to see “echoes of that” in the coverage of Harry and Meghan.

Earl Spencer added: “I’m not here to speak for Harry and Meghan, but for anyone who’s being destroyed in this way daily, it must be such a cancerous influence in their life.”

‘I know lots of things about Charles not in the book’

The Earl revealed his motivations behind writing this book nearly 30 years after Diana’s death and said he felt he had a “duty” and was an “eyewitness to history”.

“This was very much a spur for me to write this now. Both of my parents died in their 60s, I’m in my 60s. I’m aware of mortality and I wanted to just put things down once and for all which were true.”

Earl Spencer, adding it was not a threat, said: “I know lots of things about the King which I chose not to include in the book because they were not relevant.”

Earl hopes ‘William and Harry resolve now’

Earl Spencer said he did not take sides between his nephews and said: “I hope one day it’s resolved, but I don’t know all.

“I certainly don’t know what’s been done in the finer detail and so I would feel intrusive if I got more involved than to say of course a mother would want her two sons to be happy together and love each other.”

Buckingham Palace, on Wednesday, in response to the Earl’s earlier claims said: “While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and colour memory in ways others do not recognise, even many years after such a loss.”

A source told The Sun on Sunday: “Wayne is in advanced talks for I’m A Celebrity and if they secure him, he’ll be their biggest signing in the show’s history.”

Mr Rooney is said to be eager to impress his four sons and take on the infamous Bushtucker Trials.

The source said: “Wayne wants to show their sons what their dad can do and has joked he’ll be giving Coleen a run for her money.

“He is really competitive and hates losing so will give I’m A Celebrity his all.”

Coleen Rooney has reportedly been preparing her husband for jungle life.

The source continued: “She’ll be backing him all the way and has been giving him hints and tips about life in the jungle.”

Known for his blunt humour and quick wit, Mr Rooney is expected to be a hit with viewers.

A friend said: “Wayne is incredibly funny.

“If you watched his punditry during the World Cup, he’s incredibly knowledgeable but he doesn’t mince his words.

“He’s honest and hilarious at the same time.

“Wayne would be brilliant in the line-up.”

Who else is rumoured to be joining the show? 

A few rumours have started going around about who else could be involved in the new series of I’m A Celebrity. 

Other rumoured contestants for this year’s series are Gavin and Stacey actress Joanna Page, and former Paralympian Ade Adepitan.

Three sisters whose bodies were recovered from the sea off Brighton beach died from drowning after being dropped near the waterfront by a taxi, Sussex Police have said.

The bodies of Jane Adetoro, 36, Christina Walters, 32, and Rebecca Walters, 31, all from the Uxbridge area of west London, were recovered from the water near Madeira Drive after emergency services were called at about 5.45am on May 13 amid concerns for a person’s welfare.

An inquest opened in Brighton in May heard that post-mortem examinations had given a provisional cause of death as “yet to be ascertained”. Police said on Sunday that further examinations had now confirmed all three women died by drowning.

On Sunday, Sussex Police confirmed that post-mortem examinations had “confirmed all three women died by drowning”. The force also announced that the police investigation into the sisters’ deaths had concluded, finding no evidence of criminality or third-party involvement.

Throughout the investigation, Sussex Police officers, supported by other forces, reviewed hundreds of hours of CCTV footage, gathered statements from witnesses across the country and carried out further enquiries to establish the sisters’ movements prior to their deaths.

The investigation established that the three women were dropped off by taxi at Madeira Drive at 10.20pm on 12 May, with no evidence found that they visited any nightclubs or businesses in the area that evening.

The women were found to have entered the water close to where their bodies were recovered the following morning, “wearing everyday clothing”. The force confirmed “there is no evidence the women came to harm by any individuals”.

With the investigation now complete, the inquest will proceed to establish the circumstances surrounding where, when and how the three sisters lost their lives. An inquest hearing in May was told that Ms Adetoro was brought ashore by an RNLI crew and declared dead by a paramedic at the scene.

Christina Walters was retrieved from the water by an RNLI lifeboat, while Rebecca Walters was washed on to the shore of Brighton beach. Both were also declared dead by paramedics.

Following the sisters’ deaths, their father Joseph Jacobson had said there were days when the grief felt “unbearable”, but he held on to the memories they shared and “the bond that death can never take away”.

Chief Superintendent Adam Hays said: “From the outset of this complex and challenging investigation, we have been acutely aware of the speculation surrounding this incident, the public’s unanswered questions and their desire for answers.

“Our priority throughout has been uncovering the truth for the loved ones of Jane, Rebecca and Christina, because at this incident’s core there has always been a grieving family coming to terms with an unthinkable tragedy and loss. Our investigation has been thorough.

“Our extensive inquiries intentionally considered concerns raised by black communities surrounding the deaths of black people in or near bodies of water, as we worked to understand who the three women were, and the factors that could have led to them being found on the beach that morning.

“However, our inquiries have now concluded, pending any new information coming to light. Jane, Rebecca and Christina’s tragic deaths sparked a national outpouring of grief, and I would like to thank everyone who supported our investigation by coming forward with information.

“We will now support the coronial process and ask that the sisters’ family continue to be given privacy to come to terms with their loss.”

Michael Carrick was booed by Manchester United fans when he substituted Kobbie Mainoo at Fulham, but he says the midfielder is fully aware of why he was replaced.

The Cottagers were close to picking up their first win of the season after Lisandro Martinez scored a bizarre own goal on 63 minutes at Craven Cottage.

However, Matheus Cunha rescued a point for the Red Devils on 89 minutes as his deflected effort left Bernd Leno helpless.

It was an odd game, with numerous chances for both teams, but also a lot of the match being played at a leisurely pace.

Manchester United’s lack of intensity was described as a ‘disgrace’ by Gary Neville, who felt that a 15 minute spell was the worst he had ever seen from a Red Devils team, although Carrick did not agree.

The United manager came under pressure from his own fans late in the match when he took Mainoo off with 10 minutes to play, replacing him with Mason Mount.

In a forgettable performance from the team, Mainoo was arguably Manchester United’s best player and the decision to remove him was met with boos.

However, Carrick was unfazed by the response, saying it is normal and Mainoo did not take the decision badly at all.

‘There’s always going to be certain reactions when you’re making changes,’ said Carrick.

‘I think Kobbie played well, to be honest, so it was just more of at that stage of the game we’re trying to make something happen and Kobbie understands that. He’s fine, I spoke to him after the game, he’s absolutely fine. He’s all about the team and what’s best.

‘It’s just one of them things. I understand at times when chasing the game everyone’s a little bit emotional, the supporters are, as well they should be, they’re desperate for us to do the right thing. But I don’t take any negatives or offence to it.

‘I think we’ve just got to try and keep doing the right things to get back into the game. The supporters were unbelievable today, I have to say, all the way through, and stuck with the boys and supported the boys. At least we’ve given them something small at the end to take from it, and I’m sure there’s more to come.’

It has been a really poor start to the season from Manchester United, with just five points picked up from games against Hull City, Ipswich Town, Everton, Manchester City and now Fulham.

Carrick said he was ‘disappointed’ after the latest draw, but was looking on the brightside, saying: ‘There are parts we can do better. The way we responded to going down was really pleasing, the boys were really positive and played with good purpose.

‘We’ve got something the supporters can take from the game. They were fantastic again today and kept pushing the boys.

‘I’m convinced we’ll have a good season. We’re having a spell that feels bigger than it actually is to the outside. We’ll get back to winning football matches and we’ll be alright.’

The Red Devils return from the lengthy international break when they take on rock bottom Tottenham on October 10.

Craig Clark’s Mercedes was hit while fans celebrated a 1-0 win over Celtic on Sunday.

A Rangers coach’s car window has been smashed with what is thought to be part of a firework, after the team returned to Ibrox following their Old Firm victory.

Clark could be seen standing next to a supporter visibly frustrated. It comes after hundreds of fans participated in celebrations while Gers’ first team returned from Celtic Park.

In other Old Firm drama earlier in the day, firefighters were scrambled to an inferno on a Celtic supporters’ bus. Crews raced to the inferno on Clyde Gateway outside the Emirates Arena in the east end of the city at 2.25pm. There were no reports of any injuries. Dramatic footage shared on social media showed the bus engulfed in flames as football fans stood by.

Fire could be seen ripping through the rear of the vehicle while fire crews worked to extinguish the blaze. The bus, owned by McLean’s Coaches, had been due to carry Celtic fans home from the game but ignited just minutes after Rangers won.

Police confirmed there were no injuries. Fans were escorted off the motor.

Writing on social media, bosses at McLean’s told how they suspected the blaze had been caused by an act of vandalism.

A statement reads: “We are aware of an incident involving one of our coaches on the Clyde Gateway earlier today. Based on the initial information and images we have received, we have reason to believe the incident may have been caused by vandalism.

“The matter has been reported to the relevant authorities, who are investigating the circumstances. The vehicle has been recovered and will undergo a full inspection.

“We would like to thank the emergency services and everyone who assisted at the scene.”

Cops confirmed one man was arrested in connection with alleged assault of a police officer and medical staff during the game. The 39-year-old will appear in court on Monday, September 21.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We received a call at 2:25pm to a single decker passenger coach well alight on Clyde Gateway outside the Emirates Arena in the east end of Glasgow today, September 20. Fire crews remain in attendance. There are no reports of any casualties.”

Alby Hunt was due to appear at Teesside Crown Court but was not brought before the court by video link.

The 21-year-old admitted three child sex offences after he was arrested in June this year.

His lawyer, Tom Bennett, asked the judge to adjourn sentencing because Hunt had not been brought to court.

Hunt, of Rochester Road, Stockton, pleaded guilty to sexual activity with a child, inciting sexual activity with a child and attempting to engage in sexual activity with a child.

The offences took place between May 11 and June 1 this year.

Judge Colin Burn adjourned sentencing until October 30.

Hunt remains in custody.

Hunt was previously sentenced to 20 months in prison, suspended for two years, after admitting possession with intent to supply cocaine and being concerned in its supply.

Partners in crime
So everyone’s busy looking forward to GTA 6 but I’m still a little put out that despite 25 minutes of gameplay footage they still didn’t show anything that was really new. I remember when they had the GTA 5 trailers they had a voiceover describing all the features, but we never got that this time. So does that mean there could still be features we are unaware of?

Ever since they confirmed there were two playable characters I’ve felt that a co-op mode seemed like a shoe-in. But they haven’t said the game’s got one and there’s been no rumours either. I realise that split-screen is probably technically impossible (but wouldn’t that be great?) but is it just as impossible that we’d get online co-op?

For me, that would be a dream feature for GTA 6 and since you have plenty of people running around in GTA Online at the same time I don’t see why it wouldn’t be possible. Heck, retrofit GTA 5 to have three-play co-op if you can!

At this point I think I’ve got to accept it’s not going to happen at launch, but I hope that they can maybe add it later via DLC or some kind of separate mode.

Zelda achievements
So far, the Zelda: Ocarina Of Time remake appears to be a faithful recreation of the original and my nostalgia level is already hitting the roof. However, for anyone who was there nearly 30 years ago(!), faded memories will probably come out and the story will be completed quite quickly.

It’d be amazing if they made a new Master Quest for veterans. Even better would be some kind of score attack or time attack modes that is unlocked when you complete the story.

How many fish can you catch in X amount of time? How quickly can you complete this horse-riding obstacle course around Hyrule Field? The Zelda titles have always had minigames within the game world but a dedicated mode with online leaderboards would be the icing on the already eagerly awaited cake.

Fortnite forest
Finally! Some good news from the world of computer games. Tim Sweeney, the founder of free-to-play Fortnite, has spent around £150 million in buying forests so that they won’t be demolished and turned into rich peoples’ housing developments and unnecessary golf courses.

It’s good to know that customers’ money has helped gone to a really good cause.

And now knowing this, even though it won’t really help, I’m off to spend a(nother) small fortune on V-Bucks.

Lost battle
After reading Woodstain’s bit on Sunday, about how much he respects gamers standing up to Sony, got me thinking how there is a chance of changing Sony’s mind. Asking gamers to stay off their PlayStation four weeks on end will never work. Sony knows sooner or later you will turn on to hear the beep.

The only way you have a chance of changing Sony’s mind is buying their games physical. Only if you can get enough players buying the game on disc it might make Sony realise people want to own their games and not rent them.

GC: There is no chance of them changing their mind. The best you can hope for is Sony giving permission for other companies to manufacture discs for the PlayStation 5, but there’s been no sign of that.

Payday special
With payday being more than a week away for most of us who get paid monthly, may I suggest Crystal Crisis on the Nintendo Switch e Shop. It is only another puzzle block game with a slightly different element, so it is not going to pull up any trees.

Yet it is a fun take on the genre and features (apparently) a lot of different characters.

Astro Boy was the only one I knew and I was familiar with the game and character from The Binding Of Issac. At £1.79, it will keep you entertained until payday my fellow gamers.

Resident critic
I saw the latest attempt to turn a video game series into a movie. I thought it was OK. Quite entertaining. I think the best thing to do when watching this film is to try and forget Zach Cregger was involved because I thought, with respect to its script and story, Resident Evil 2026 wasn’t really fit to lick the bootlaces of either Barbarian or Weapons.

There were some nice inclusions from the games, and I guess it was fun spotting those, but I sort of expected something better. There were a few well directed action sequences too. Overall, the monsters and the wintery setting sort of made me think I was watching a slightly fumbled reimagining of John Carpenter’s The Thing.

Maybe I was expecting too much. Perhaps my admiration for Barbarian and Weapons prejudiced my judgement. For me, the first Silent Hill film remains the best video game movie. After so many misfires you have to wonder why film studios meddle with game franchises at all. These films must be an easy sell since they have a ready made audience of video game players, like me.

Single wish
I can see how GTA Online was always going to be Rockstar’s priority, given how much money it makes, but I would’ve hoped that with everything they were making off it they could’ve pumped some of the money into single-player DLC, whether it was Liberty City or not.

I guess you’ve got the problem of having to take people away from working on GTA Online updates. But when you’re making more money than you can count surely you can hire a few more people? Obviously, that’s not how they thought of it though, since it never happens, but I hope GTA 6 isn’t going to be one and done in terms of single-player content

Action cinema
I’m so excited by the fact that the new Resident Evil movie is reviewing so well. I haven’t seen it yet, as I type this, but I will this weekend and I can’t wait, especially as I loved Barbarian and Weapons. It was a surprise Zach Cregger would make an adaptation after his previous two original films did so well but it’s great to know he did it because he’s a fan of the series.

Games have been around for so long now that any movie director that isn’t old school grew up with them. I think that’s what will lead to some truly great adaptions. It makes me wonder what could be done with Mario, and especially Zelda, if it was put in the hands of people that love the games and know how to make a movie.

I don’t think games will ever be taking over from comic books as the hot thing to base a movie on but I do think we are reaching a new level where you can make the movies work without having to cheat with something that was 90% story already, like The Last Of Us.

They should get back into making films of action games. Things like Doom, Devil May Cry or Ninja Gaiden. They’re dumb games, in terms of the plot, but so is Resident Evil. Given them proper characters and plots is what the movie would be for. That way you’re actually getting something useful out of it, that can then feed back to improve the games.

I’m not sure Hollywood thinks about it that deeply, but that’s my idea. Whatever happens, Capcom is definitely going to be hot for a while. So maybe the Dino Crisis comeback will be via movies rather than games!

Just noticed in the end credits for Star Fox on Switch 2 that the soundtrack was performed by a full live orchestra at Abbey Road Studios in London! How cool is that?

Although I’m glad that the rumours of a Super Metroid remake don’t seem to be true I wonder where they came from? They’re very specific and I don’t see any way you could mistake Metroid Ravenous for Super Metroid. Hopefully Nintendo just realised it was a bad idea and that was the end of it.
