The fallout in Asian football continues as the continent comes to terms with an underwhelming World Cup performance.

On Monday, Chung Mong-gyu stepped down as president of the Korea Football Association.

His departure follows harsh criticism from the country’s president and the resignation of coach Hong Myung-bo last week after South Korea’s group-stage exit that culminated in a 1-0 loss to South Africa.

“There were moments when I lived up to expectations and moments when I left you deeply disappointed,” said Chung, who has held the role since 2013. “All the success is thanks to our players and fans, and all the mistakes are my responsibility.

“I am convinced that Korean football will overcome adversity and reach great heights once again, as it always has.”

South Korea’s soccer superstar Son Heung-min apologized for the team’s performance in a long social media post where he said he was “indescribably hurt” and eager to “win the hearts” of the nation once again.

The day after Hong stood down as South Korea’s coach, Yasser Al-Misehal quit as Saudi Arabia Football Federation president as the team fell at the first hurdle at its seventh appearance.

“The national team’s failure to qualify for the next round of the World Cup ⁠is a result that falls short of all our ambitions,” Al-Misehal wrote on social media. “I bear full responsibility for it, apologizing to everyone who hoped to see our team in a better position.”

Not enough wins

Teams from within the Asian Football Confederation managed just three wins in 29 matches at the expanded 48-team World Cup. Of the nine representatives, only Australia and Japan advanced from the group stage. Iran was unbeaten but three draws were not quite enough to take the team into the knockout stage.

Australia and Japan were eliminated in the round of 32, the very first stage of knockouts.

The Socceroos, the AFC’s last hope, lost in a penalty shootout to Egypt. Australia head coach Tony Popovic’s job was already safe after he signed a contract extension on the eve of his team’s opening win over Turkey.

Japan was the best performer with a 4-0 win over Tunisia 4-0 and draws with the Netherlands and Sweden to place second in its group. Then after leading Brazil 1-0 at halftime, the Samurai Blue lost to a 96th minute goal from the five-time champion.

“Through the three group-stage matches and the hard-fought game against Brazil, I sensed that what we have built can compete on the world stage,” coach Hajime Moriyasu said. “If we continue this growth steadily, a day will come when we can be the best in the world.”

Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, president of the Asian Football Confederation, warned that there’s a lot of work to do for the rest to catch up.

“While we celebrate our two qualified teams, we must also look realistically at the overall outcomes,” Salman said of the knockout stages of the tournament. “Our teams are making strides and displaying great fighting spirit, the gap at the absolute top tier remains tight, and we must continue to work hard to bridge it.”

South Korea’s run to the semifinals in 2002 remains the continent’s benchmark at the men’s World Cup. Japan has lost four times in the knockout stages and Australia is 0-3 in World Cup knockout games.

Jordan lost all three games on its World Cup debut and parted ways with coach Jamal Sellami on Sunday. Sellami took the job in 2024 and helped Jordan secure its first World Cup qualification in June 2025.

There is still speculation about the future of the Qatar and Iraq coaches after both teams finished bottom of their respective groups.

Uzbekistan also failed to collect a single point in its first appearance at the global tournament but coach Fabio Cannavaro is set to stay.

Uzbekistan’s last loss was to Congo, one of nine African nations to advance from the group stage.

“All my players realized just how difficult it is to play at this level,” Cannavaro, who was captain of the World Cup-winning Italy team in 2006 title, said. “We gained valuable experience — not just the players, but myself, our staff and the federation as well.

“I hope this experience will give us more motivation for the future.”

Intimate details of the royal couple’s private life and personal dynamic have been revealed by former royal staff members in a new book, Yes Ma’am: The Secret Life of Royal Servants, written by author Tom Quinn.

Prince William and his younger brother Harry grew up under constant public scrutiny, accompanying their parents King Charles and Princess Diana on numerous tours throughout their early childhood.

Every aspect of their lives – from their formative years and adolescence to their time at university and beyond – has been subject to relentless examination by both the public and the media.

Despite being born into considerable privilege, the pressures and expectations of royal life, coupled with the burden of living under the spotlight, brought with them significant drawbacks.

According to a former Kensington Palace maid, Kate reportedly had to teach Prince William how to give his children a piggyback because he’d never received one as a child.

The maid reportedly told author Quinn: “Kate had to explain many of the things that parents outside the royal family do with their children as a matter of course.

“She had to show him how to give the children a piggyback, for example. William said very quietly, ‘My father never gave me a piggyback.’”

Further revelations about life behind palace walls have also come to light. In an excerpt published in the Times, one former staff member told Quinn: “[King Charles and William] both get irritated very quickly. They are very picky. It comes naturally to them.”

In such circumstances, Kate frequently serves as the voice encouraging “calm”.

The insider added: “I don’t know where William would be without Kate – she hasn’t had everything done for her throughout her life, so she calms him down when he gets a bit fractious.

“She said he sometimes has to be treated as her fourth child.”

Kate received praise from other sources regarding how she navigated the complexities of palace life, as well as the “snooty” attitudes she initially encountered from certain staff members.

A former Kensington Palace employee told Quinn: “Kate is someone who slowly and carefully absorbs the atmosphere of a place, the relationship between people and the rules.

“She doesn’t jump in straight away and try to change everything to suit her way of thinking. She bides her time and is very intelligent and intuitive about other people, what they do and how they behave.”

They added: “She was also coached – not just by William, who wanted Kate to avoid the problems his mother had encountered, but also by the staff.

“Kate was always happy to accept advice both from the lower staff, with whom she got on very well, and from the courtiers, even though some of them were initially very snooty about her.”

Kate married Prince William on April 29, 2011 at Westminster Abbey in London, following a relationship that began in 2003.

Following their marriage, the Princess of Wales assumed the title Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge, while William received the titles Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn, and Baron Carrickfergus.

On September 9 2022, Kate became Princess of Wales when William was created Prince of Wales by his father, King Charles III.

Prince William’s mother, Diana, held the title of Princess of Wales before her. She tragically died following a car crash in August 1997. She was 36.

The supermarket giant is reintroducing its Market Street meat and fish counters after customer feedback, following their removal from 70 stores last year as part of a cost-cutting procedure.

A spokesman for Morrisons said: “Our Market Street counters are part of our DNA.

“They’re at the heart of our offer and a real differentiator for Morrisons.

“We closed a small number of meat and fish counters last year – and have learned a lot from that.

“We’ve listened to customers and are now planning to re-open a number of these over the coming months.

“So, customers can look forward to having skilled butchers and fishmongers back in store to prepare their meat and fish just the way they like it.”

Thirty-five meat and 35 fish counters were closed across the UK, but Morrisons has now confirmed that its Great Park Newcastle, Herne Bay, Yeadon, and Bolton Dawes shops are among the first to see the return of the service.

The spokesman said: “The first meat and fish counters have already re-opened at Great Park Newcastle, Thornbury, Herne Bay, Yeadon and Bolton Dawes, with more to follow soon.”

Additional stores are expected to have their Market Street counters reinstated in the coming months.

The counters will include flatbeds and “grab and go” options, offering customers greater convenience.

Morrisons have also said to have “significantly improved” their waste yield for the counters since the closure last year.

The spokesman said: “The re-opened counters will incorporate flatbeds and grab and go options, and all of the significant learnings on yield and waste that the business has made over the last twelve months, to make them more efficient, while delivering the traditional counter service that customers love.”

A woman and her husband were stunned when their neighbour apparently believed it was acceptable to let their daughter’s friends use their lawn as an impromptu car park. Seeking a calm resolution, the couple cleverly blocked the space with pots before heading off for the weekend, hoping to prevent any unwanted vehicles from parking there.

Liv Bee shared the audacious story on TikTok. With a knowing smile, she captioned her video: “Our neighbour lets her teenage daughter’s friends park in our yard, so my husband put these pots on our property line before we left town to go on a trip.”

When they returned home, they found the pots had been shifted and the cars were once again sitting on their grass. Rather than starting an argument, Liv explained her husband chose to set up his folding chair and wait “for them to come out” to tackle the matter face-to-face on his own property.

She included a playful warning for the teenagers and wrote: “Sweeties, if you’re reading this, be prepared. This man has been in a car with his two kids, his wife, and two dogs for a whole day.

“He’s in rare form, ladies,” Liv wrote, displaying her husband boldly repositioning the pots around the vehicles in a calculated act of protest.

The comments section erupted with shock at the neighbours’ bold intrusion onto private property, prompting demands for firm action.

One individual sternly suggested: “Call a tow truck. One company for each car. Don’t pay attention to which one gets which car.”

Frustration mounted as another suggested that such blatant disrespect was only feasible because of an absence of repercussions. “They knew they weren’t supposed to be parking there, or they wouldn’t have moved the markers! No accountability is why people pull this s***,” fumed a TikTok user.

A separate commenter described their cunning response: “Had a neighbour behind me continue using my side lot to drive through to his I asked him to stop multiple times and even put signs up for private property no trespassing.”

They went on: “So I eventually put a board with nails in the ground, which just happened to be in the tracks he drove. I used those nails to help clean the grass and leaves off my rake for lawn maintenance. How was I supposed to know it was gonna get his tires?”

Words like “weird” and “entitled” were thrown around liberally by some observers regarding the brazen neighbours, with others urging Liv and her husband to challenge them – though, apparently, conversation had already proved unsuccessful.

The irritation reached its peak in a blunt statement from an annoyed onlooker: “I said it on a different post today, but I’ll say it again, the level of audacity and entitlement in the world is astronomical.”

A further commenter said: “Anyone saying that these property owners shouldn’t care about people parking on their grass after asking and putting up things to make it obvious they don’t want people there… are the problem.

“These same people are teaching their children to be entitled and disrespectful.”

BANGKOK (AP) — China’s military test-launched a long-range ballistic missile Monday from one of its nuclear-powered submarines in the South Pacific, drawing protest and concerns from countries in the region.

The missile was launched at 12:01 p.m. and carried a dummy warhead, according to an announcement by the official Xinhua News Agency. China last conducted a missile test in the Pacific two years ago, then firing an intercontinental ballistic missile with a dummy warhead.

The launch was part of routine annual training, complied with international law and practice, and was not directed against any country or target, according to the statement from Xinhua, which was reposted by the Ministry of Defense.

Australia and New Zealand criticized the launch.

The New Zealand government said it was informed of the planned launch hours beforehand and noted that the missile was fired into the South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone.

The nuclear-free zone was established by the 1986 Treaty of Rarotonga, which prohibits nuclear weapons throughout the region. China in 1987 ratified the protocols pledging not to test nuclear weapons within the zone, or to threaten to use them against signatories with territory in the region.

“It appears that despite our long-standing concerns about this type of activity, China carried out the test within hours of informing us,” Foreign Minister Winston Peters told The Associated Press in a statement.

The launch took place the same day Australia and Fiji signed a new mutual defense treaty that is meant to counter Chinese influence in the Pacific.

“Australia has been clear with China that we regard this as destabilizing to the region,” Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong told reporters in Fiji, in response to the test.

However, the WAGs looked tense and held their hands over their mouths as the Three Lions tried to close out the match while down to ten men.

She stunned in the sleeveless top, which has been designed by Hugo Boss. The WAG captain also wore a navy bomber jacket which proudly displayed the Three Lions. 

Kate had her dazzling wedding ring on display as she smiled into the camera for the photo op. 

Meanwhile, Megan donned a poncho as she braved the rainy conditions that forced the kick-off time to be pushed back one hour.  

Megan has taken on a ‘mother hen’ role to her fellow partners, with sources saying she’s thrilled to take on her title a la the wives and girlfriends of years past.

‘In a time when the WAGs are lawyers, or nurses or even an engineer, there’s Megan. Some joke, in a kind way, that she’s a bit of a throwback to the old times but it’s just so refreshing,’ one insider told The Daily Mail.

‘She loves it all – the outfits, the glamour and the prestigious role and column inches being a WAG brings. She is so proud of Jordan and so the least she can do is look the part to cheer him on.

Much of the nation is tipped to ‘pull a sickie’ and sleep in after staying up to watch the match, and even England manager Thomas Tuchel has urged kids to have a late start at school so they can cheer them on. 

The Three Lions came close to an early exit when they went 1-0 down to the DR Congo in the Round of 32, before two sensational goals by Harry Kane helped them to land the win. 

England will also face the impact of playing at high altitude when they take to the field in Mexico. 

Playing at the iconic Azteca Stadium, the Mexican squad boasts an undefeated record across 10 World Cup matches. 

The build-up to England’s Round of 16 clash with Mexico was hit by confusion around its kick-off time on Friday, when FIFA considered bringing the match forward by six hours to try and avoid predicted thunderstorms delaying play. 

It was proposed that the game would kick off at midday local time, or 7pm UK time. 

Official contact was made with both the FA and the Mexican Football Association on Friday, both of whom are believed to have reacted negatively to the proposals.

The earlier kick-off time would have had a significant impact on players’ preparations for the game, which are typically organised down to the most minute detail.

The threat of adverse weather – which was initially thought to be the main factor in the talks – was also a consideration, with thunderstorms forecast for kick-off, which is 6pm local time, although they are currently due to pass by 8pm. Flash flooding, in particular, was a concern.

At one point on Friday evening, it seemed likely the game would be played at the rescheduled time, forcing Brazil’s game with Norway in New Jersey to be pushed back by half an hour to 4.30pm to avoid any clashes.

In the end, FIFA’s attempt to bring England’s kick-off forward was halted by a series of barriers – including a reluctance from officials in New York and New Jersey to shift their own fixture.

The Daily Mail understands a decision to move the game was ‘all but done’ according to those with knowledge of the situation.

The proposals – which the FA was stunned to learn of via Mexican media – were met with an angry response from both England and Mexico, whose coach publicly lambasted the prospect.

Officials in Mexico City are now bracing themselves for what may be an incredibly challenging day, with more than a million people expected on the streets.

England will face a tough test against Mexico at the Azteca, with the co-hosts boasting a formidable record at the stadium.

Thomas Tuchel has admitted his side are at a disadvantage due to having little time to prepare for the altitude in Mexico City.

The match could yet face delays due to thunderstorms being forecast, which could lead to delays due to rules dictating a match be suspended if lightning strikes anywhere within an eight-mile radius of the stadium.

Victory would take the Three Lions through to a quarter-final against either Brazil or Norway.

England have played six times at the Azteca, twice against Mexico, and the results were a draw in 1969 and a loss in 1985.

Mexico is guaranteed to have a fanatical backing while England’s support will be limited to just 4,000.

The Private Hire Vehicle Support Fund, expected to cost nearly £2M, will be available to drivers in Bolton and Greater Manchester to help them replace older cars with new cleaner ones.

This comes after the Greater Manchester Combined Authority decided towards the end of June to replace the previous loan model with an entirely grants-based system.

Bolton South and Walkden MP Yasmin Qureshi said: “After the last Tory government tried to impose a charging Clean Air Zone on Greater Manchester, the GMCA with Andy Burnham as Mayor found another way, by showing an investment led approach focused on lowering emissions with a publicly controlled bus network and supporting our local taxi drivers could achieve better results.

“With more zero emission buses now on the road thanks to the Bee Network, the GMCA has approved a grant scheme for private hire drivers registered in Greater Manchester to apply for £2,500 to upgrade their vehicles.

“This supports local drivers and ensures that more drivers are licensed here in Bolton and other local towns where we have stricter oversight.

“This is good for drivers and good for passengers, whilst also showing that investing in our future is a better way of working rather than taxing hard working people for driving as part of their job.”

A report put before the GMCA said that the recommended grant-only scheme would come to an estimated maximum cost of £1.98M across the city region.

This was only slightly more than the previously considered loan and grant scheme, which would have come to an estimated maximum cost of £1.85M.

This was because of the expected cost of revenue-funded administration, bad debt write-off, and other issues.

The report said: “Having considered the risks associated with the loan component, it is recommended that the previously agreed Private Hire Vehicle Support Fund is revised by removing the loan element and moving to a grant-only model, while providing a £2,500 grant per eligible vehicle, being half the previously proposed loan amount.

“The revised grant-only scheme is estimated to cost up to a maximum of £1.98M in total.

“Subject to approval, the updated financial position will be reflected through the relevant budget monitoring reports to the GMCA, alongside updates on scheme take-up and delivery.”

The fund is expected to be officially launched in September this year.
