Joe Cole slammed Chelsea for selling ‘world-class’ Kai Havertz to Arsenal after Xabi Alonso’s side were beaten by the Premier League champions.

Havertz helped Arsenal maintain their perfect start to the new season by scoring the equaliser in a 2-1 win at the Emirates Stadium.

Chelsea summer signing and ex-Arsenal transfer target Morgan Rogers gave the visitors the lead inside two minutes but Havertz equalised midway through the first half.

In-form Martin Odegaard put Arsenal ahead just after half-time and the captain’s goal proved to be the winner as Chelsea failed to score an equaliser of their own.

Arsenal’s £65m move for Havertz in 2023 raised eyebrows given the German’s three mixed seasons at Stamford Bridge.

But Havertz is now Arsenal’s first-choice striker – ahead of £64m signing Viktor Gyokeres – and produced another influential performance in Sunday’s win over Chelsea.

‘I think if you’ve got Kai Havertz at your club you’re watching him every day, week in, week out,’ Cole said on Premier League Productions.

‘Coaches and managers come and go, but the Directors of Football? Look at the amount of money on centre-forwards the club has spent since they him go out the door.

‘Those kind of deals never happened at Manchester United with Sir Alex Ferguson, or with Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.

‘When did you hear of them letting go of a player who went on to become world class at one of your rivals?’

Odegaard heaped praise on Havertz, who also played a role in Arsenal’s winner, after the 2-1 win over Chelsea.

‘He’s a really smart player,’ the Arsenal skipper said. ‘He moves so well and takes a lot of attention from the defenders and it was a brilliant goal.’

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, said of Havertz: ‘He looks happy. He looks settled, happy, and some great things have happened in his personal life as well.

‘He feels fit, he’s training every day and has this routine right now. He’s scoring goals, but not only that – he’s also doing amazing work for the team.’

Arsenal face Napoli on Wednesday night in their first Champions League game of the season while Chelsea take on Leeds United in midweek in the Carabao Cup.

Speaking after Arsenal beat his former club Chelsea, Havertz said: ‘It’s always nice to win at home against a London rival. It was a tough game but over the 90 minutes, we deserved to win that game.

‘They have strong players. They have an amazing squad but so do we. We knew it was going to be tough and it’s going to be a tight game.

‘They scored early, so it’s not easy for us but we believed in ourselves and changed the game around.’

Democratic candidate for Ohio governor Amy Acton attacked by armed man at campaign event

An armed man lunged at Democrat candidate for governor of Ohio Amy Acton and her husband, injuring multiple people.

Amy Acton is running against former DOGE co-chair Vivek Ramaswamy to try and flip the state governor’s office.

While attending a fair in Canfield in the southern part of the state, an ‘armed individual lunged’ at Acton and left multiple people injured, her campaign said.

Mahoning County Democratic Party Chairman Christopher Anderson said Acton was at the county party’s tent at the fair when the man lunged at her and added that the attacker has been arrested.

He added that the attacker knocked volunteers to the ground before being taken into custody.

‘Let me be clear – The Mahoning County Democratic Party abhors political violence in all forms,’ Anderson wrote on Facebook.

‘What happened at our tent today during today’s visit from Dr. Acton is reprehensible and should be condemned by leaders on all sides of the aisle.’

Acton and her husband Eric appear to have been left unharmed, WKBN reported, as her campaign thanked first responders in a statement.

‘Dr. Acton and Eric are grateful for the swift and decisive action of law enforcement and are praying for the recovery of those injured,’ Communications Director Addie Bullock said.

‘This kind of violence has no place in Ohio. Dr. Acton will always stand up to the chaos, hate and vitriol that pits us against one another.’

The Ramaswamy campaign – who had been scheduled to attend the fair as well on Sunday – condemned the attack when reached by The Daily Mail on Sunday.

‘Candidates should be able to meet with voters without having to worry about threats or violence,’ said Connie Luck, Ramaswamy’s communications director.

‘What happened today is completely unacceptable and has no place in politics, and we hope that no one was hurt.’

The Daily Mail has reached out to the Canfield Police Department, Ohio State Troopers and the Acton campaign for further details.

Acton is the former health director for the state of Ohio under Republican Governor Mike DeWine in 2019 and 2020 and led the state’s COVID response.

Her high public profile and robust early fundraising have made Democrats hopeful of winning back the governor’s office for the first time since 2006.

Acton became a household name across Ohio in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic as she stood alongside Mike DeWine during daily coronavirus broadcasts.

Her comforting presence during the crisis made her a beloved figure with many Ohioans.

Her campaign also has highlighted her rough childhood, overcoming poverty, homelessness and sexual abuse while growing up in Youngstown.

But the administration’s aggressive pandemic actions — including shuttering businesses, closing schools and canceling an election — also earned Acton plenty of enemies and made her the occasional target of people upset about the policies, with some armed protesters showing up outside her home.

Ohio has not elected a Democratic governor since 2006.

This is a developing story.

Charles Leclerc spins off at Monza's Parabolica turn and crashes into the barriers

Charles Leclerc was left sitting in pain on the grass after suffering a dramatic 160mph crash at the start of the Italian Grand Prix.

The Ferrari favourite lost control of his car at the final bend, the Parabolica, on the second lap as he duelled with Oscar Piastri for fourth place.

Leclerc’s impact with the wall was severe with only a short portion of gravel to slow his trajectory into the hoardings, which he thudded side-on.

The Monegasque soon jumped out of the car but then sat disconsolately on the grass as he was comforted by a marshal before being taken away in the medical car. He was feeling his neck as he went for treatment. Ferrari said he had been released from the medical centre without injury.

The race was red-flagged and some fans in the grandstands cried at the huge blow for their team.

By this point, Leclerc had already squeezed his Ferrari team-mate Lewis Hamilton on the second part of the opening Del Refillo chicane and was driving somewhat erratically. Hamilton was furious, saying: ‘Charles pushed me off.’

The seven-time world champion, who started fourth, fell down to tenth place.

George Russell was leading the race for Mercedes when the race was suspended after passing pole man Pierre Gasly on the main straight at the end of the first lap.

Organisers announced the race would resume at 2.39pm, UK time.

Iliman Ndiaye explains why he turned down Tottenham for Manchester City

Iliman Ndiaye has explained why he turned down Tottenham to join Manchester City by saying his determination to play Champions League football counted against Spurs.

The Senegalese winger completed a £60m move from Everton to City on deadline day but only after Tottenham were the first to bid for him.

Spurs were discussing a £60m move for Ndiaye – with Richarlison returning to Everton for £35m in a separate deal – but as soon as City showed an interest, the former Sheffield United player decided not to join a club that finished 17th in each of the last two seasons.

“For me it was always going to be City,” he said. “I wanted Champions League and playing at one of the best teams in the world. I’m not saying Tottenham is not, but when Manchester City comes through, you don’t say no.

“This is where I think I belong. I’ve worked hard to get to this point. When I was speaking with my wife, I was telling her if I had to leave Everton it would be somewhere where I know I would be playing Champions League.”

Ndiaye spoke to City manager Enzo Maresca before making the move, adding: “He’s someone that admired me and as soon as they came through I had only one direction where I wanted to go.”

Ndiaye made his City debut in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Coventry, and while he came off in the closing stages, he allayed fears he was injured by saying it was cramp.

Jamie Vardy returns to England! Striker and wife Rebekah to move back from Italy as he signs surprise deal at Burnley – who are rock bottom of the Championship

Jamie Vardy is back in English football after signing a deal at Burnley until end of this season

Jamie Vardy will be playing his football in England again after signing a contract at Burnley until the end of the season.

The 39-year-old has been a free agent since leaving Italian side Cremonese in the summer following their relegation to Serie B.

Vardy, who moved to Italy with his wife Rebekah and their family, scored seven goals and provided three assists in 29 appearances in Serie A last season.

Burnley will be hoping Vardy’s experience can help them improve after a poor start to the season – with the Clarets bottom of the Championship after five matches.

They want him to be their No1 striker and his deal has an option for a further year if Burnley are promoted. It is understood he turned down offers from MLS, Serie A and the Premier League

The scale of his task is clear with the club yet to win a game in the English second tier so far this season – drawing two and losing three of their matches, scoring six and conceding 12 across those matches.

Upon signing for the club, Vardy – who had a Netflix documentary about his career in May – expressed his desire to propel them back up the table.

‘This club has a proper footballing history and passionate fans who deserve a team that represents them and their town.

‘I can’t wait to get going on the pitch and help the team move in the right direction.’

Burnley head coach Nicky Hayen is excited about what his new striker will add to his struggling squad.

He said: ‘We are delighted to welcome Jamie to Burnley.

‘His experience and leadership will be invaluable to our squad, and we believe he can make a significant impact on our campaign. Jamie has a proven track record, and we are looking forward to seeing him in a Claret shirt.’

Vardy scored 200 goals in 500 matches for Leicester and won both the Premier League and FA Cup with the club. He is regarded as one of the club’s greatest players of all time.

The striker also scored seven goals in 26 appearances for England and was part of the Three Lions squad for Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup.

Trump appears to set sights on renaming entire STATE after Lake America rebrand

Published

On Sunday, President Donald Trump posted a map of the Southwest state to Truth Social, but 'Mexico' within the state's name had been crossed out in red and replaced with 'America'

President Donald Trump jumped on social media with another swipe at changing the names of major geographical locations – this time, taking aim at New Mexico

On Sunday, Trump posted a map of the Southwest state to Truth Social, but ‘Mexico’ within the state’s name had been crossed out in red and replaced with ‘America.’

The post came with no remarks attached but followed a tense back-and-forth with Canada that saw the renaming of Lake Ontario to ‘Lake America’ last month.

Just before he shared his latest name change, he posted a photo depicting himself crossing out ‘Ontario’ in Lake Ontario on a map and replacing it with ‘America.’

It’s unclear if the President was joking. The Daily Mail reached out to the White House for comment.

While only around 14 percent of US citizens were in favor of the name change, according to a poll by Reuters/Ipsos, the President’s official Trump Store launched ‘Lake America’ hats for $55.

The move was accompanied by other posts on social media from Trump, including a video of geese with machine guns patrolling the lake as well as an AI clip of himself kicking over a ‘Lake Ontario’ sign and replacing it with a ‘Lake America’ sign.

On August 30, the President declared that he wanted the US to keep out all Canadian products unless the companies wanted to relocate to America.

The tension was prompted by failed negotiations between the US and Canada over tariffs on products traveling back and forth between the two countries.

Trump’s post on Sunday marked the latest in the President’s campaign to rename major landmarks and locations, the first being his renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the ‘Gulf of America’ – a move that sparked a wave of criticism.

Following the post, he shared another photo that said: ‘If you have a problem with Lake Ontario being renamed Lake America, just remember, the Left renamed the following…’

Underneath, the photo had two lists; the left side featured titles and on the right, the titles were changed to reflect alleged ‘Left’ views.

The photo included examples such as Columbus Day, changed to Indigenous Peoples’ Day; Land O Lakes ‘Removed the Indian. Kept the Land’; Washington Redskins ‘Washington Commanders’; Felon ‘Justice Involved Person’; and Illegal Alien ‘Undocumented Noncitizen.’

Luke Littler beats Luke Humphries in final on return to European Tour

Luke Littler beats Luke Humphries in final on return to European Tour

Luke Littler marked his return to the European Tour with a title after winning the Czech Darts Open, beating his great rival Luke Humphries in the final.

Littler has been managing his schedule this year and has not played a Euro event since the Belgian Darts Open in March.

But winning trophies is an insatiable habit for the 19-year-old and he ended Humphries’ reign in Prague with a 8-6 victory in the final, having earlier beaten Michael van Gerwen in the semi-final.

Humphries had not lost in this tournament since 2023 but Littler is his nemesis and now has a strong grip on their enduring rivalry.

The world champion claimed a sixth European Tour title, in just his 16th event, and he takes home a £35,000 prize.

“It’s what the fans deserved, obviously the two best going at it in a final once again. I’m glad I’ve won,” Littler said.

“I’m glad I can put my name over there (on the honours board). It’s good to be back.

“The rust has definitely gone, I am just happy to be back on stage, back in front of fans, back playing.”

With his place in October’s European Championship finals guaranteed – the final major title Littler has yet to win – he is not expecting to play in any of the three remaining regular Euro tour events.

“Not sure now I’ve won this one. I think I think I’ve secured my place in Dortmund,” he said. “Dortmund’s obviously the one I’m chasing.

“And then in two weeks’ time, it’s the World Series in Amsterdam. Yeah, we’ll have to see what happens, see what the plan is, see how busy I am.”

Despite sweltering temperatures inside the arena in Prague, Littler kept his cool throughout, starting off his day with a last-16 win over Krzysztof Ratajski.

He then whitewashed Danny Noppert 6-0 in the quarter-final before ousting Van Gerwen 7-3 in the last four.

Humphries is always a tough task, though, and, chasing a third successive title in Prague, the world number two led 4-3.

But Littler rattled off four successive legs to take control and then got the job done.

BBC news presenter Maryam Moshiri reveals she has an incurable blood cancer – and has been undergoing brutal treatment while juggling being on air

Published

on

Maryam Moshiri was diagnosed nearly two years ago with with Polycythaemia vera, a rare condition that causes bone marrow to continuously create red blood cells

BBC news presenter Maryam Moshiri has revealed that she has incurable blood cancer.

The 49-year-old was diagnosed nearly two years ago with Polycythaemia vera (PV), a rare condition that causes bone marrow to continuously create red blood cells which makes the blood become thick like honey.

The cancer cannot be cured, and can cause blood clots, heart attacks and strokes if untreated, but is typically managed like a chronic condition.

Ms Moshiri told The Times the gruelling treatment ‘is better than dying, obviously, of a horrible cancer. But it’s something that you have to get your head around,’ adding that it takes its toll after many years.

The presenter, who has become infamous for various on-air antics including accidentally showing the middle finger while broadcasting, initially learned of her condition from a menopause-related blood test.

Following the discovery of the cancer, she would have more than a pint of blood drawn from her body every month to dilute the red blood cell concentration, which left her feeling sick and exhausted.

Not long after, she was flown to Rome to cover the Pope’s death and ensuing conclave.

‘I was working 14-hour days, constantly on air, constantly having to think on my feet, and holding it together, despite the fact that I had this chronic tiredness and fatigue,’ she said.

Ms Moshiri said the gruelling treatment 'is better than dying, obviously, of a horrible cancer. But it's something that you have to get your head around'

Ms Moshiri said the gruelling treatment ‘is better than dying, obviously, of a horrible cancer. But it’s something that you have to get your head around’

But she clarified she does not want her diagnosis to get in the way of her work, adding that ‘a big part of this disease is having to get on with life’.

On her return, she began an immunotherapy treatment at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS trust in London called interferon, which reduced the amount of blood that needed to be drawn.

However, she said she suffered debilitating side effects, like insomnia, headaches and such intense itching she would draw blood from her scratching.

‘During my worst times when I was going through really quite gruelling treatment, I wasn’t there for my kids. I’d be lying on the sofa, and my son would say, “mummy, can you come play football with me in the garden?” And you just can’t. You’re too tired,’ she said.

She added that the first question her children, Iris, 13, Vivienne, 11, and Caspian, 9, that she shares with LatinNews editor-in-chief Jonathan Farmer, asked when she told them of her condition was whether she was going to die.

Some months later, she switched to a different drug which had more manageable side effects but admitted to having to adjust to a different lifestyle that will be occupied by hospital appointments and medication.

Ms Moshiri is now supporting a new campaign Here for This, by Blood Cancer UK, which highlights the moments sufferers can miss due to the condition.

Helen Rowntree, chief executive of the charity, told The Times: ‘We’re so grateful to Maryam for bravely sharing her story. When public figures speak openly about their diagnosis, it cuts through the silence that so often surrounds blood cancer – the UK’s fifth most common cancer and third biggest cancer killer.

‘We urgently need continued public and government support to fund the next generation of kinder, more effective treatments with fewer side effects so that more people with blood cancer can live well, spend less time dealing with the impact of treatment and be there for the moments that matter.’

Ms Moshiri first caused shock waves in December 2023 when she gestured her middle finger at the camera before reading out the top of the hour headlines.

In an extended video released after the slip up, Ms Moshiri was seen making a series of exaggerated gestures with her hands before reaching ‘one’ and appearing to ‘flip off’ the camera.

The veteran presenter said the gaffe was a ‘private joke’ with crew and issued an apology after the end of the clip was broadcast live.

Since then, she has suffered several other on-air gaffes, like imitating a seagull against her producer’s advice, bending a spoon in relation to a man crushing a frying pan, and jogging on the spot while presenting a segment on daily step-count.

Tyson Fury claims Anthony Joshua fight is OFF and names his next opponent

Published

on

Daily Mirror

Tyson Fury is set to finally settle a career-long grudge with Anthony Joshua in the squared-circle later this year, but the Gypsy King has now claimed that their boxing bout is off

Tyson Fury has claimed that his proposed boxing match with Anthony Joshua is off, as he eyes a THIRD bout with Oleksandr Usyk. AJ and the Gypsy King have been on a collision course for the entirety of their respective careers, with a long-awaited fight between the pair of English heavyweights eyeing a dance under the bright lights for November, according to reports.

However, that clash has now had water poured all over it, with Fury claiming that Joshua has bottled the bout. Taking to social media on Sunday, the 38-year-old said: “So, it looks like AJ has s*** his pants yet again. After 11 years, he’s finally s*** his pants yet again.”

In the very next breath, Fury then called out long-time rival, Usyk – despite going 0-2 against the undefeated Ukrainian in back-to-back fights in 2024. He added: “So this would only lead me to a fight with Oleksandr Usyk.

“Oleksandr, you’re his trainer, and his sensei, and you know he’s a weak-minded piece of s***, and that he’d never fight the Gypsy King – which you’ve had the guts to do twice…twice. And you know how difficult it is in there.

“Listen, you got the decisions last time, fair play to you, good luck to you. But let’s do it again.

“Let’s run it back in November. The ball is now in your court, Oleksandr. Do you want to fight me this year, in 2026? Or are you calling it quits? Let me know, because I’m now looking for a new opponent.”

Joshua is yet to respond to Fury’s claims. It comes as boxing fans may not want to see a trilogy bout between Fury and Usyk, given the dominant fashion in which the Cat defeated Fury just two years ago.
