Lucy Mecklenburgh says wedding to ex-Corrie star Ryan Thomas is on hold as ‘priorities change’

Published

on

Daily Mirror

Despite Ryan Thomas proposing in 2019, Lucy Mecklenburgh tells us any hopes of nailing down plans for their big day have fallen by the wayside for now.

“I think it’s become harder because we had kids before we got married,” says the mum of two. “So then your priorities change a little bit, and we actually fell pregnant with Roman the night we got engaged. Then that became a priority, then Lilah, and then we moved to Manchester, and it’s all been really full-on.”

Lucy, 35, does insist that getting hitched is still on the cards for her and former Corrie star Ryan, 42 – who she shares Roman, six, and Lilah, four, with. “We would love to one day,” she says.

But for now, she has another more pressing wedding to think about. She says, “My sister is getting married next summer, so the focus is on her at the moment. We went wedding dress shopping the other day. I’d love to do it too one day, but I’m trying to put my focus on her and enjoying the process for her first.”

Lucy and Ryan first fell for each other in 2017 after meeting on Channel 4 ’s Celebrity Island With Bear Grylls. But the couple made headlines earlier this year when Ryan confessed they sleep in separate bedrooms – and even watch TV apart.

But as Lucy explains, the night time arrangement ensures both can get some proper rest. “Ryan snores and sleep talks, and I need my sleep,” she says. “I have to sleep, especially with two young kids. It’s full-on, so I’d just turf him out to the spare room because I’d be like, ‘Shut up!’, and that kind of evolved.”

As for their TV-watching habits, she adds, “Of course, sometimes we sit in the same living room. But I like stuff like The Summer I Turned Pretty and Off Campus, which Ryan won’t watch. So he sits in the other room watching documentaries and things. That works for us.”

Ryan first shared the anecdote about their sleeping habits on At Home With The Thomas Bros, his podcast with brothers Adam and Scott. And Lucy says she learned very early on in her relationship that being with one of the siblings meant taking all three on.

“They are a very close family,” she says, adding that Adam’s wife Caroline once gave her some advice. “They’ve been together since they were about 16, so she’s been there for a long time. When I met her for the first time, she said, ‘When you get one Thomas, you get two free,’ and it’s so true.

“They work together and that’s made them even closer. We’re a close family and all get on well. It’s lovely for the cousins to be so close.”

But when the three brothers are together, she says the noise level is off the scale. “When they’re all in the house together, I’m like, ‘I need earplugs’. They’re so loud,” she laughs.

Last year, Adam struggled during his time on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!. Lucy says she and Ryan were both on hand for support. “We were all there for him. Afterwards Adam put a lot of his energy into training, which I think is a really healthy thing to do after something traumatic.”

Although Lucy admits “occasionally” needing to tell Ryan off for oversharing on the podcast, she says, “Most of it is light-hearted. It’s relatable and funny. I mean, they do overshare for sure. But I think everyone’s craving that now, aren’t they? To be open and honest and talk about things they can relate to, and also just to have a bit of a laugh.”

Looking back on a busy summer with their children, Lucy says the holidays have been “chaos”. But she has teamed up with vegan brand Beyond Meat to launch a new campaign, Beyond Busy: September Reset, to help families eat healthily as a new school year gets underway.

“I like the idea of the short, under 30-minute meals,” says Lucy, who runs her own successful fitness brand.

Any shortcuts are welcome, since evenings at their house are hectic. “It’s getting the homework done, then me or Ryan will be in the kitchen trying to whip something up, and then it’s bath and bedtime,” she says. “As much as I’ve loved the summer holidays, I’m excited for more time to cook and to make a few changes.”

While she and her family don’t follow a solely plant-based diet, Lucy always tries to make sure they make sensible food choices. She says, “It’s nice to have easy options, and something tasty. I’m trying to add more plant-based things to our diet – whether that’s one or two evenings a week. The great thing about Beyond Meat is you’re not compromising on taste or health goals, because they’re delicious and protein-packed. I love the brand.”

Ukraine-Russia war latest: Kyiv says 2,500 Russian troops trapped on tiny strip of land with artillery destroyed

Bessent told Russian minister no economic relief until Ukraine war ends

US treasury secretary Scott Bessent has made clear to Russian finance minister Anton Siluanov that there will be no economic relief for Russia or agreements on other issues until its war in Ukraine ends, a source familiar with the ministers’ bilateral meeting told Reuters.

Bessent met bilaterally with Siluanov on the sidelines of a G20 finance leaders meeting in Asheville, North Carolina.

The Russian finance minister’s first in-person ‌G20 appearance since Russia invaded Ukraine has irritated European officials who are working on more ‌sanctions against Russia.

Earlier, a US official told Reuters the focus of the Bessent-Siluanov meeting was president Donald Trump’s peace plan for Ukraine.

Russia’s finance ministry said the two officials discussed financial cooperation within the G20 framework.

When Siluanov tried to discuss areas of mutual interest, the source said Bessent interrupted him and said “nothing is possible until the war is over.”

The US imposed sanctions on Russia’s oil majors in October 2025, but after the US-Israeli war against Iran cut off energy supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, Bessent issued licences allowing the sale of seaborne Russian oil stored in tankers to ease supplies, sending some funds to Moscow.

Russia believes moratorium on Black Sea attacks will not bring peace closer – deputy foreign minister

Moscow believes that a moratorium on Black Sea attacks will not bring a peace agreement for the Ukraine war any closer, deputy foreign minister Alexander Grushko has said according to the Interfax news agency.

The Black Sea, a vital grain trading route, has seen Russia and Ukraine pounding each other’s export terminals and grain-carrying vessels, posing a significant threat to the grain-carrying corridors.

Turkey’s foreign minister Hakan Fidan said on 31 August that Ankara had prepared a plan for the safe passage of grain and was working on an agreement similar to the 2022 grain deal to allow safe exports – but Grushko’s comments have cast doubt over whether Russia will accept this.

Russia targets port infrastructure in Ukraine, says emergency service

Russian strikes targeted port infrastructure in Ukraine’s southern Black Sea region of Odesa, Ukraine’s emergency service said on Tuesday.

It described the attack as “massive” in its latest update on Telegram.

“The building of a sewing shop was damaged. In the Odessa district, a residential building caught fire, unfortunately, one person was injured.

“Russia also attacked one of the checkpoints in the region. A fire also broke out there, which rescuers were involved in extinguishing.”

In Focus | How Ukraine is trying to beat Russia at its own game with massive drone strike campaign

In 2023, a year into Russia’s unprecedented invasion of Ukraine, Kyiv was producing around 800,000 drones a year. By 2024, that number had more than doubled to two million.

Fast forward to last month – when President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the country was now churning out more than 10 million units annually with plans to double that number to 20 million by this time next year.

The rapid rate and intensity of production is having an impact. Just this week, Russian president Vladimir Putin was forced to acknowledge that attacks on the country’s refineries and energy infrastructure were having an effect.

“There are no critical consequences from such attacks, there have not been and cannot be,” he told a conference of business and economy leaders, trying to downplay their scale.

However, he added: “But they certainly cause us harm, that is obvious, and we understand, see and know this.”

China won’t allow Russia to use nuclear weapons, says Finland’s Stubb

Finland’s president Alexander Stubb said he is aware of private assurances from China that it would not allow Russia to use nuclear weapons.

On being asked whether Russia could resort to using nuclear weapons, Stubb said: “I had the foreign minister of China visiting me this summer, and I raised the issue.

“And he said, we will never allow it to happen. And I think that’s a pretty good deterrence,” he told Paul Ronzheimer of the Axel Springer Global Reporters Network.

Russian strikes destroy millions of school books for Ukrainian children

Russian attacks on Ukraine this year have destroyed about a million textbooks in strikes on publishing houses, officials in Kyiv said.

Classes were due to resume at Ukrainian schools today, but it is not immediately clear whether maybe parents would be willing to send their children in. Schools have air raid shelters, and classes can also be held online.

The destruction of textbooks has potentially delayed deliveries for the start of the school year, Ukraine’s education ministry said.

A plant on the outskirts of Kyiv destroyed this week was in the process of delivering 1.3 million copies of textbooks, almost 10 per cent of the country’s supply, local media reported.

Death toll rises to nine in Ukraine as Russia says it hit military and energy sites

At least nine people were killed and over a dozen injured in Russian air attacks on Kyiv and the surrounding region this morning, authorities said, in the sixth consecutive day of strikes on the Ukrainian capital.

The Russian defence ministry said its forces hit military and energy facilities in Ukraine’s Kyiv and Odesa, as well as the regions surrounding these cities.

Moscow’s claim has not been verified. However, officials in Ukraine reported casualties including women and children from the overnight attacks.

Eight people were killed and another five wounded in Kyiv, three of them children, and fires broke out in different locations around the capital, emergency service said.

US irks Europe and G20 by inviting Russia to finance meeting

The United States’ move to welcome Russia back to a meeting of G20 countries while denying some journalists access to the gathering dismayed some finance leaders present, deflecting from its bid to focus talks on global economic growth.

As US treasury secretary Scott Bessent opened the meeting, some ministers were surprised and dismayed to see Russian finance minister Anton Siluanov sitting at the G20 table.

This is the first time Russia has attended the forum in person since Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine in 2022.

Polish finance minister Andrzej Domanski told Reuters he was unhappy to see Russia represented, although he recognised the right of G20 hosts to invite guests.

“We do not trust Russia. They lie constantly and you need to be really, really cautious while discussing with them,” he told Reuters in an interview, stressing that Russia was the aggressor in its conflict with Ukraine.

“So for me it would be very difficult to have any kind of conversation with Russia,” he said.

German finance minister Lars Klingbeil said Europe was preparing a further package of sanctions against Russia, but Siluanov’s presence at the Asheville meeting sent a “quite troubling” signal for US cooperation with the effort.

“I would have wanted greater clarity from the American side that he should not be received here as a normal guest,” Klingbeil said.

Siluanov also held a bilateral meeting with Bessent that covered financial cooperation within the G20 framework, Russia’s finance ministry said.

Indonesia sticks to coal to power rapid aluminum expansion

Indonesia sticks to coal to power rapid aluminum expansion

BANGKOK (AP) — Resource-rich Indonesia is expanding its production of aluminum as the Iran war disrupts supplies, relying on its abundant coal reserves to power new smelters that run contrary to efforts to curb carbon emissions that cause climate change.

Prices have risen due to fuel shortfalls and attacks on infrastructure that have slowed production in the Middle East of the lightweight, silverish metal used in everything from kitchen foil and power lines to smartphones and cars.

In working to raise its limited manufacturing capacity, Indonesia has a strong ally in China, which makes 60% of the world’s aluminum but is keen to reduce pollution and emissions from smelters on its own shores. Chinese companies have invested in about three-quarters of the planned Indonesian projects.

Here’s what to know about Indonesia’s ambitious aluminum plans:

Iran war strains global aluminum supply

The Middle East usually makes about 9% of the world’s aluminum, but output from the region is expected to drop 44% this year from 2025, according to Fastmarkets, a commodities information agency.

Energy shortfalls drove Emirates Global Aluminium to back out of deals and Qatar Aluminium Ltd. to slash production, while Iranian strikes damaged Aluminium Bahrain’s facilities.

A metric ton of aluminum traded for between $3,150 and $3,250 before the Iran war. But the conflict drove up that price to as high as $3,780 per metric ton in June. It’s now trading near $3,400 a metric ton.

The war has magnified the potential for other regions, like Southeast Asia, to replace Middle East production, said Andy Farida of Fastmarkets.

“When that supply is so unsure, end users look for alternatives,” he said. “The war has really accelerated this transformation and put Indonesia on the map.”

Indonesia looks to build its aluminum output

Aluminum is one of the most used metals in the world and its production is highly energy intensive. The process starts with the mining of bauxite ore, which is refined into alumina and then smelted into aluminum.

By the end of the decade, Indonesia wants to quadruple its alumina output to 32.5 million metric tons and ramp up aluminum production from around 1 million metric tons in 2025 to 14.5 million metric tons by 2030, according to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air.

The Finland-registered nonprofit is tracking 32 prospective off-grid coal plants, built by private companies to exclusively power aluminum smelters. These are known as “captive coal” facilities.

There is limited public data on the emissions from these types of plants, according to Syahdiva Moezbar, with CREA in Jakarta. “This captive coal boom all over Indonesia is essentially not tracked. That is why it’s very concerning,” he said.

Such plans are contrary to Indonesia’s promises to cut its use of coal, the most heavily polluting major fossil fuel and a significant source of planet-warming emissions.

They also threaten to cause more damage at a time when the expansion of Indonesia’s globally important nickel industry is sacrificing local environments for industrialization.

The aluminum industry accounts for about 2% of annual global greenhouse gas emissions, equaling about 1.1 billion tons of carbon dioxide equivalent each year, according to the World Economic Forum. That’s more than the total annual emissions of most countries.

If all Indonesia’s planned projects begin operating by 2030, CREA estimates that the country’s own bauxite reserves will be depleted in less than 12 years.

China has a big stake in Indonesia’s aluminum boom

China has invested between $5.5 billion and $6 billion in Indonesia’s aluminum industry, according to CREA, which forecasts this to surge to $30 billion by 2030.

After Beijing set a domestic cap on aluminum production to curb overcapacity in 2017, Chinese companies expanded into other countries that have fewer restrictions, like Indonesia, according to Putra Adhiguna, with the Jakarta-based Energy Shift Institute.

Indonesia categorizes nickel and aluminum as “transition minerals” since they can be used in so-called clean technologies, such as electric vehicle batteries and solar panels.

That’s left a loophole for companies to maintain that these nickel and aluminum investments, which are fueled by coal, are in keeping with climate change commitments, despite the fact that Chinese President Xi Jinping pledged to stop funding overseas coal plants in 2021.

It is unclear what final products Indonesia-origin metals, like aluminum and nickel, will end up in, said Binbin Mariana with the environmental advocacy group Market Forces.

“It is a huge loophole, an elephant can go through the loophole,” she said. “You say it’s a green product, but it is powered by coal… That’s definitely greenwashing.”

Rush to build smelters threatens local communities

Aluminum smelters could run on cleaner energy like hydropower, but this would take longer and cost more.

Indonesia is prioritizing speed to capitalize on the window of opportunity that the Iran war has created, said Adhiguna, with the Energy Shift Institute. “The speed factor is really what is causing the havoc,” he said.

“This is really running against the grain, against the spirit, of the commitment to the climate movement,” he said.

Building more captive coal for aluminum will worsen the toxic haze that often blankets Southeast Asian cities, like Jakarta, according to Muhammad Al Amin, with the Indonesian Forum for Environment.

The environmental advocacy nonprofit, also known as WALHI, has campaigned against increasing the use of coal on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, which is a nickel production hub.

“If companies want to expand captive coal to aluminum, I think it is very bad news and a very bad development,” he said. “We have seen it, we have felt it — how communities suffer from the captive coal impact.”

A 23-year-old man has been charged with murder following a house fire which killed a seven-year-old girl and her aunt in Middlesbrough.

Valentina Foster and her aunt, Natalie McDonald, 34, were killed when a home went up in flames in Grangetown just after 5am on Wednesday.

Both died in the blaze, while four others were injured.

Cleveland Police said a 23-year-old man, earlier named as Jaden Wright, had been charged with two counts of murder, two counts of section 18 grievous bodily harm with intent and two counts of attempted section 18 grievous bodily harm with intent.

He is scheduled to appear at Teesside Magistrates’ Court later on Tuesday.

A 31-year-old man who was also arrested in connection with the case was released without charge on Sunday.

It comes as Valentina’s family and locals released dozens of balloons in her favourite colours to give the little girl ‘the best send off’ on Monday night.

Footage shows scores of pink and purple heart-shaped balloons being let off together on a residential street in Southbank, near the location of the fatal fire.

Police said on Friday that a 48-year-old woman was in the Royal Victoria Infirmary in a ‘critical but stable’ condition and a 27-year-old man was at James Cook University Hospital receiving treatment.

Two teenage girls were both discharged after suffering non life-threatening injuries.

Katie Nicolson, chief crown prosecutor for CPS North East, said: ‘Our prosecutors have worked closely with Cleveland Police to establish that there is sufficient evidence to bring this case to court.

‘We remind all concerned that proceedings against the defendant are active and he has the right to a fair trial.

‘It is vital that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.’

On Friday, police confirmed the fire was not being linked to a fatal collision on the A66, which killed seven people, including PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough.

Officers initially said they could not rule out linking the house fire with wider gang violence that broke out in Teesside after the crash.

As part of a separate probe in the area, armed police raided two homes on Burns Road, Grangetown, during the early hours of Monday.

Cleveland Police later said that two men, aged 19 and 24, had been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

The force said the pair were arrested after a vehicle was ‘rammed into another vehicle’ on Derwentwater Road just after 11pm on Sunday.

Both men remain in custody.

The raid comes after a week of escalating violence thought to be linked to a postcode war between two factions of a local organised crime group and the fatal A66 crash.

The young men in the car were said to have been pursuing rival gang members shortly before driving the wrong way down the A66 and smashing into a police vehicle that PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough were in.

Michael Cahill, 23, Jakub Matusiak, 23, Makai Saddington, 18, Theo Rae, 17, and Cole Worthy, 17, all died in the crash. Four of them had lengthy criminal records ranging from theft, harassment and assault to drug dealing and knife possession.

Officers have also arrested and charged an 18-year-old man with dangerous driving after a vehicle was spotted being driven dangerously in the town at 4pm on Saturday.

A total of 27 people have now been arrested after a fatal head-on crash on the A66.

Fires were seen in local fields after at least five cars were set alight at a balloon release in memory of one of the crash victims.

PC Blades and PC Clough were remembered with a minute’s applause ahead of a match between Middlesbrough and West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, while PC Blades’ sons walked out as mascots with Manchester United on Sunday.

Supporters also paid their respects at Seaton Carew’s game against FC Hartlepool. PC Blades had been a junior coach for both teams.

Locals say the atmosphere in Grangetown is tense this week, with some afraid to leave their homes.

Retired truck driver Allan Scott, 78, traces much of the unrest back to drugs.

‘Drugs are the biggest culprit. It’s a way of life for them,’ he said. ‘Years ago, people would grass each other up to the police, but they don’t now.

‘People are too scared to go to the police. There is an atmosphere of fear and intimidation.’

Up to 200 extra police officers have been drafted in from across Britain to back up the local force, which is one of the smallest in the country.

Reports suggest the town has been crying out for additional help in tackling violence for a number of years, with requests from the area’s police and crime commissioner for more funding from the Government falling on deaf ears.

The town has one of the highest crime rates in England, second only to central London, and in 2025-26, there were 21.7 killings per million people, the highest figure recorded by any police force area in that reporting year.

However, the town’s mayor has robustly denied that it is ‘lawless’.

Chris Cooke said police were doing an ‘absolutely sterling job to round up as many people as possible’, and has claimed crime is on the wane.

Four youngsters were reportedly seen leaving the area after the shooting

A ‘shooting’ incident in the heart of Braintree has seen three people injured while one arrest has been made.

Officers scrambled to Market Place in the town centre at around 10.10pm yesterday (Monday, August 31) to reports of an alleged shooting. Essex Police say it believes it was a ‘targeted firearms’ incident.

One person has been arrested in connection with the investigation and is currently in custody.

The police are urging for any witnesses to contact them to assist their enquiries.

Local residents have reported that a police helicopter is circling the town centre as well as lots of police and ambulance vehicles being in attendance.

“We do not believe this was a random incident but instead directed by one specific group of people towards another specific group of people.

“We also do not believe this incident poses an ongoing threat to the public.

“Four men or boys aged in their mid-teens to mid-20s were seen leaving the area and work to identify and locate those involved are ongoing.

Cardiff City begin hectic transfer deadline day as three targeted and four may leave

Cardiff City head into transfer deadline day with the expectation of a busy final few hours as Brian Barry-Murphy looks to put the finishing touches to his squad.

The Bluebirds have until 11pm tonight to complete their transfer business, with a striker and winger still the two principal priorities, while the addition of a full-back would also be a nice bonus to cap off the summer.

Cardiff have already made four senior additions this summer, with Jack Moylan, Nathan Trott, Calum Scanlon and Krystian Bielik arriving, but the club’s recruitment team are expected to be working deep into Tuesday as they look to add further quality. You can get LIVE updates on every Cardiff City deadline day deal here throughout the day.

Since Bielik’s arrival, the intention has been to make two or three more additions that genuinely improve the squad rather than simply add numbers, and the final day could therefore prove crucial.

Bielik’s arrival from West Brom last week has altered the equation slightly. The Poland international can play at centre-back or as a holding midfielder, but Barry-Murphy has indicated he sees him primarily in the latter position.

That means Cardiff’s need for defensive reinforcements has not disappeared entirely, with a right-back now being explored.

Perry Ng remains the undisputed first choice in that position, while Ronan Kpakio is his understudy after making a breakthrough last season and earning international recognition with Wales.

The club are understood to be considering both loan and permanent options for the position, although it remains behind the attacking additions on the priority list.

The biggest areas Cardiff want to address are at the top end of the pitch.

A striker is wanted to provide competition and cover for Yousef Salech, while a winger is being sought to bring greater pace, dynamism and directness to Barry-Murphy’s attacking options.

Cardiff have been patient in their search for the right profiles and have identified potential targets at Premier League clubs, with loans increasingly appearing the most likely route for those positions.

The hope is that players could become available as clubs higher up the pyramid finalise their own squads, meaning Cardiff’s business was always likely to accelerate as the deadline approached.

Barry-Murphy offered little detail on the club’s plans after Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Sheffield United but made it clear further business was coming.

“I probably don’t want it to be over too quickly so that we can actually do something,” he said when asked whether there had been any movement in the market.

And when asked whether he was confident Cardiff would get the deals they need over the line, the manager replied: “Yeah, I hope so. I feel confident.”

He added: “We’ve been pretty consistent. We want to improve the squad. The players that we’ve brought in, we feel have done that.

“But there’s more to come.”

The expectation is therefore for Cardiff’s biggest activity to come today, with the club having deliberately avoided rushing into deals simply to bolster the numbers.

The Bluebirds have already had to contend with a series of injuries this season, including the absence of Will Fish, while other defensive options have also been limited.

That has placed additional emphasis on recruitment, but the club have remained committed to finding players who fit the profiles identified by Barry-Murphy and his recruitment team.

There could also be movement in the opposite direction before the 11pm cut-off.

There is tentative interest in Tanatswa Nyakuhwa, with Newport County and Shrewsbury Town understood to have checked on the young forward, although neither move was advanced at the time of the previous update.

Cardiff would also ideally like to find loan destinations for Eli King, Dakarai Mafico and Kion Etete.

Colchester had shown interest in Etete earlier in the window, although nothing came of that at the time.

The prospect of a senior departure has been tentatively mooted, largely on social media, over the last couple of days, however as of yet there’s nothing to substantiate such claims.

For supporters, then, the key question on deadline day is how many of Cardiff’s remaining targets can be turned into completed deals.

The club have already made four additions, but with a striker and winger wanted and a full-back also being considered, there is still plenty of work to do before the 11pm deadline.

And after Barry-Murphy’s insistence that “there’s more to come”, Cardiff fans can expect a long day of waiting, negotiations and potentially a flurry of late announcements before the window finally slams shut.

Lionel Messi’s Argentina teammates pay tribute after international retirement: ‘The greatest of all time’

Lionel Messi’s former Argentina teammates have paid tribute to their retiring captain after the great No 10 brought the curtain down on his international career.

Messi confirmed on Monday that his Argentina career was at an end after 207 appearances and 125 goals for his country.

The 39-year-old, who will continue to play on for Inter Miami, led the nation to World Cup triumph in 2022, and again captained them to the final of this year’s tournament.

The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward retires as the second leading male goalscorer in international football, with Messi behind only great on-field rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

“It’s so hard to read ‌that you’re retiring; we won’t be seeing you wearing the sky blue and white colours anymore,” Angel Di Maria, part of the World Cup-winning side, said. “All I know is that I was born in the right century to be able to witness you play, relish your performances and, on top of that, share all those ‌years with you in the national team. To see you fulfill your dreams, and your ‌greatest dream of all – to become world champion.

“Thank you so much for everything; you’re a legend and the greatest of all time.”

Messi made his international debut in 2005 as an 18-year-old and spent 21 years in an Argentina shirt, a period that encompassed a record eight Ballon d’Or wins.

The No 10 actually retired once before after a Copa America defeat to Chile in 2016 meant Argentina had been beaten in three successive finals, but was convinced to return and played a decade more.

“Your unconditional love for our country, your inner struggles to never give up, your strength in always enduring injustice, your leadership and kindness towards every player who stepped onto the training ground to make them feel at home, the little gestures you showed to every member of our national team’s staff,” Rodrigo De Paul said.

“I can only say thank you – you are the greatest of all time. Thank you for making us so, so happy; you have no idea how many smiles you brought to our faces. You are eternal.”

Enzo Fernandez added: “I’ve spent so many years seeing you there that it seems impossible to imagine it any other way.”How lucky I was, Leo… thank you for treating me the way you did, for everything you taught me and for letting me be part of your story. We’re going to miss you so much, captain.”

Messi’s rise was akin to that of Diego Maradona, another diminutive No 10 who led Argentina to World Cup glory in 1986 and is similarly regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time.

“The captain of our dreams,” Claudio Tapia, president of the Argentina FA, suggested. “That kid, ‘La Pulga‘ [The Flea], that alien who made possible what so often seemed impossible…

“You are already a legend of this land, of our national team and of world football. You made us believe in magic. And perhaps thats why `we find it hard to accept that time marches on for you too. The Argentina national team shirt is your flag. And our peoples love for you will last forever.”
