Jose Mourinho is poised for a sensational return to Real Madrid, with his appointment expected to be confirmed following Florentino Perez’s re-election as president at the Bernabeu Stadium.

Perez, who secured an eighth term after fending off challenger Enrique Riquelme, had made no secret of his desire to name Mourinho as head coach should he win the election. Reports indicate that the current Benfica boss has agreed a three-year deal to return to the club he previously managed between 2010 and 2013, replacing Alvaro Arbeloa, who was appointed in January after Xabi Alonso’s departure.

In a statement on the club’s official website, Perez affirmed his commitment to the club’s future success.

“We have won the elections and will continue working to keep winning titles,” he said. “I am still here and I am here to defend Real Madrid. We will continue working so that Real Madrid keeps winning titles, and we will fight until the end to achieve the 16th European Cup. We will continue to take pride in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, the best stadium in the world.

“Proud to have the best players in the world, proud to welcome back one of the best coaches in the world, a Madridista like Jose Mourinho. And rest assured, with me as president, Real Madrid has been, is, and will always remain owned by its members.”

Perez first became Real president in 2000 and had renewed his mandate five times since 2009 by running unopposed. In the build-up to Sunday’s vote, Perez promised to appoint Mourinho ⁠and said he would spend €150m on an unnamed player, to be revealed on Tuesday, a fee that would represent a club record.

He also said defenders Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries would be his first signings if elected.

Meanwhile, 63-year-old Mourinho secured LaLiga and the Copa del Rey during his initial tenure in the Spanish capital however, he has not won a domestic league title since leading Chelsea to the Premier League in the 2014-15 season.

His Benfica side remained unbeaten in the Primeira Liga last season but ultimately finished third, eight points adrift of Porto, after drawing 11 of their 34 matches.

The TUC wants the government to go further to secure a digital dividend for workers, enact pro-worker rights and regulations, invest in skills to support workers through the AI transition, and enable workers to actively shape the technology’s development and application.

TUC Assistant General Secretary Kate Bell said: “By acknowledging the importance of workers and their unions in AI adoption, the government is taking the tentative first steps towards a pro-worker AI agenda – but more concrete action is needed to make it a reality.

“Fair and effective AI adoption requires respecting the voice, rights and interests of workers. But for too many, AI has become a byword for surveillance, algorithmic pay cuts, and threats of unemployment. Most working people are not anti-AI, but they want an alternative to Big Tech extracting from us all while offering little in return. Today’s announcements on skills and early careers are a good start.

“We don’t yet know how AI and its impacts are going to play out. But the right approach today can help to shape this technology from the ground up. Give workers legal rights to decide how AI is rolled out at work, make sure they’re represented on boards, and take on vested interests to ensure working people get their fair share. That’s how the government can give workers a real stake in this technology and the wider economy.”

The 2026 Tony Awards, celebrating the best of Broadway plays and musicals from the last year, have been awarded.

Sunday night at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall, hundreds of nominees and famous faces assembled to celebrate the 2025-2026 Broadway season. After the first part of the ceremony, The Tony Awards: Act One, revealed a slew of winners in the technical and creative categories, the national broadcast was hosted for the first time by Grammy-winning singer Pink live on CBS with streaming on Paramount+.

Schmigadoon! scored the top prize, winning the coveted Best Musical category, along with Best Original Score, Best Orchestrations, and Best Book of a Musical.

Newly minted Pulitzer Prize winner Liberation won Best Play, while Ragtime won Best Revival of a Musical along with several acting and technical awards for a grand total of four Tonys.

John Lithgow took home the first acting trophy of the evening for his role as Roald Dahl in Giant, setting a new record as the oldest man to win a competitive acting Tony at 80 years old. Laurie Metcalf won for her supporting turn in the Nathan Lane-led revival of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, which scored several trophies including the coveted Best Revival prize for a total of six Tonys — the most of any individual production.

Broadway fan-favorite Shoshana Bean nabbed her first-ever trophy for her featured role in the new musical The Lost Boys, offering a heartfelt acceptance speech. Moments later, her co-star Ali Louis Bourzgui won for his supporting role as vampire leader David in the adaptation of the 1987 flick.

In addition to featuring performances from nominated musicals, the broadcast included tributes to a handful of Broadway shows celebrating milestone anniversaries, including The Book of Mormon, Chicago, A Chorus Line, and Rent.

Mindanao, which is the second-largest island in the Philippines, was hit by a 7.0 magnitued earthquake this morning

An earthquake in the Philippines has killed at least 12 people and injured 200. The Foreign Office has issued urgent new travel advice this morning after a powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Mindanao in the Philippines.

Mindanao, which is the country’s second-largest island and the seventh-most populous island in the world, was hit by the quake on Monday, June 8. The tremors were felt in Davao City shortly before 7.40am local time.

A total of 12 people are now reported to have died, with at least 200 injured as a result of the disaster. The earthquake was initially estimated at a magnitude of 8.2, but the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has since downgraded it to 7.0.

Following the tremor, possible tsunami alerts have been issued for a number of regions, including the Philippines, Indonesia, Japan, Palau, Yap, Taiwan, Papua New Guinea, and the west coast of the United States, reports The Mirror.

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has now warned British nationals who are scheduled to travel to the area. The official update from the FCDO states: “On 8 June 2026, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck southern Mindanao. Aftershocks are expected, and there may be damage to buildings and infrastructure in affected areas. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has issued a tsunami threat and advised residents and visitors in affected coastal areas to evacuate to higher ground.

If you are in the affected area:

• Follow the advice of local authorities and emergency services
• Move to higher ground if you are in coastal areas
• Be aware of the risk of aftershocks
• Avoid damaged buildings and infrastructure
• Monitor local media and official sources for updates.

If you are planning to travel to Mindanao:

Your travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against advice from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.

President of the Republic of the Philippines Bongbong Marcos has issued a statement following the earthquake, it reads: “A strong earthquake has struck off the coast of Sarangani this morning, and a tsunami warning is now in effect across several coastal provinces in Mindanao.

“I have directed all relevant government agencies to act immediately. The Office of Civil Defense and the NDRRMC are now coordinating disaster response and monitoring across all affected areas. The DSWD has been directed to pre-position relief goods and ensure that evacuation centers are ready and operational.

“The DPWH is on standby to assess damage to roads, bridges, and critical infrastructure, and to clear routes needed for rescue and relief operations. I am also ordering the suspension of classes in all levels across affected areas in Mindanao until further notice. The safety of our children comes first. DepEd will coordinate with local government units on this.

“To our kababayans in the affected provinces, please heed the tsunami warning. Move to higher ground now. Do not wait. Your life is more important than anything left behind. The national government is moving and we will not leave Mindanao behind. I am in constant communication with our regional offices and local chief executives on the ground. Updates will be provided as the situation develops.”

“To be targeted in this manner is disappointing.”

Sectarian graffiti was daubed on the gates of a Co Antrim GAA club overnight in an incident being treated as a hate crime by police.

The graffiti appeared at Rasharkin GAA in the early hours of Sunday morning, June 7, and read ‘GSTK’, which is believed to mean ‘God save the King.’ Another piece of writing reads ‘REM1690’, an apparent reference to the Battle of the Boyne.

Posting a statement on social media, Rasharkin GAA expressed its disappointment at the incident. A spokesperson for the club said: “St Mary’s Rasharkin GAC is aware of graffiti sprayed onto the club gates overnight.

“To be targeted in this manner is disappointing. Sectarian graffiti is wrong in any setting and should be condemned. Our club is proud to provide an inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds to enjoy Gaelic Games in the village.

“It is particularly disappointing that this incident comes during a weekend where hundreds of our young people have been busy enjoying our games.”

Local Sinn Féin councillor, Leanne Peacock, said the incident was carried out by “faceless thugs,” describing the incident as a “digusting sectarian attack.”

Police confirmed they are treating the incident as a sectarian hate crime. A PSNI spokesperson said: “We are treating this as a hate crime and enquiries are ongoing.

“We are appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time and has any information, including CCTV or other footage that could assist with the investigation, to contact police on the 101 number, quoting reference 613 07/06/2026.”

Sear, who is the resident baker on the ITV show, told fans on Instagram that her father had “unexpectedly” passed away.

Sharing a tribute to her dad, the This Morning star said, “Sad news… this week we lost my wonderful dad, George, unexpectedly.

“I can’t believe it. The original BanterSaurusRex.

“Dad was a brilliant engineer and had such a sense of humour, loved music, he was generous and such a character!!

“He’s always been there for us and especially for me.

“By my side from helping me every day when I had baby George and couldn’t cope, to helping in my bakery every day.

“We were there for each other constantly everyday whether it was on FaceTime (thankfully he was good with his iPad!)

“Or me doing his weekly Ocado, even though he could do it himself.

“He liked to do it together just to talk. Even though he would drive me nuts sometimes.

“I could tell he was fully aware of what was in stock and would get me to check on FaceTime together!”

This Morning star shares heartbreak as dad suddenly dies

The baker is married to Simon Sear and is the mother of actor George Sear, known for his roles on CBBC and Disney Channel.

The pair also have two daughters with actress Ruby and artist Lydia.

Ending her tribute to her late dad, Sear wrote, “I will miss him terribly, I can’t believe it.

AN episode of a TV show will shine a light on a project helping families with the cost-of-living crisis.

Peter and Noni Farrelly will feature in Channel 4’s popular show, Narrow Escapes, about life on Britain’s waterways.

The pair, who live in a narrowboat, are co-founders of Growbaby, an international charity providing free, high-quality clothing for babies and young children.

In the episode, which will be featured in the new series of Narrow Escapes currently running on Channel 4, viewers will see how the charity operates at its project in Kirkcaldy, Scotland.

At Growbaby’s sister organisation in York, volunteers say the need for free clothing for younger children is greater than ever, adding that people from all over the city are welcome to use the service, run out of the York Vineyard Church in Fawcett Street, near the Barbican Centre.

Heather Pearce is one of a team of volunteers with Growbaby York.

She told The Press: “We aim to provide a welcoming, accepting space for people in our community who are in need of clothes for children aged 0–5 years.

“Growbaby York is not just about providing baby clothes for those who need them, but also about providing a place of community. A place where parents, carers and grandparents can come and browse the clothes, feel connected with their community, build relationships and experience a sense of belonging.”

Timna Bennett, of the York Vineyard Church, added: “At the heart of Growbaby York is a simple aim: that no child would go without. The initiative does this by providing good-quality new and pre-loved clothing for under-5s completely free of charge to families across York, regardless of income, background or faith.”

Since launching around four years ago, the project has gradually gained momentum.

Earlier this year, Growbaby York moved into a new shop-style space within the York Vineyard Church.

Timna said as families continued to face rising living costs, the team recognised that the challenges of raising young children were often not only financial.

Caring for babies and toddlers could be an isolating experience, and Growbaby York sought to provide both practical support and meaningful connection, she said.

“By making the service available to everyone, regardless of circumstances, the project hopes to remove any stigma around asking for help and accessing support,” she said.

“Volunteers carefully ensure that all clothing is in excellent condition, reflecting their belief that every family should be treated with dignity and understand their worth.”

Growbaby York currently opens on the second and fourth Friday of each month from 10am until 12pm at York Vineyard Church on Fawcett Street (YO10 4AH). No referral is required.

The project is part of the wider Growbaby International network, founded in 2003 by Peter and Noni.

It began with a vision to support local families in need, regardless of income, faith or background.

Today, there are more than 40 Growbaby initiatives serving communities across the UK and beyond.

Rory McIlroy took home double what Shane Lowry earned

Rory McIlroy collected twice the prize money of his close friend Shane Lowry despite finishing in a tie for 12th at the rain-affected Memorial Tournament.

Tommy Fleetwood surrendered a one-shot advantage to finish fourth in Ohio, as JT Poston claimed the title. The third round at Muirfield Village was forced to spill over into Sunday morning, yet Poston’s four-shot lead quickly disappeared as Fleetwood’s eagle at the 15th hole propelled the Englishman into the leading position heading into the closing stages.

However, a dropped shot two holes later proved damaging, and Fleetwood could only watch on as Poston and Ryan Gerard finished two strokes clear on 12 under par, before Poston maintained his nerve to prevail after two play-off holes.

The early focus in Ohio had been squarely on Masters champion McIlroy and world number one Scottie Scheffler, who was attempting to match Tiger Woods’ impressive feat of winning this prestigious tournament three times in succession.

Ultimately, both McIlroy and Scheffler had to settle for a share of 12th place, finishing on four under after carding final rounds of 68 and 71 respectively. Both collected cheques worth over £301,000 – double what Lowry earned for finishing in a tie for 22nd, reports the Irish Mirror.

Saturday’s action was halted with Poston and Gerard level on nine under at the sixth green, though Poston increased his total to 12 under once the third round concluded on Sunday morning. Gerard sat four shots adrift, while Sam Burns occupied third place on seven under, with Fleetwood and American Wyndham Clark completing the top five on six under.

McIlroy had come out of the gates firing with three consecutive birdies in his final round, yet trouble lay ahead as Poston held his nerve until a dramatic back nine ensued. A birdie from Burns at the ninth and a bogey from Poston cranked up the pressure, and soon enough a four-way tie at the summit emerged before Fleetwood’s eagle at the 15th.

The lead proved short-lived as Clark drew level with Fleetwood on 11 under, before a bogey from the Englishman saw him post a 68 to finish on 10 under.

Gerard moved clear on his own with a stunning 37-foot putt, but Poston kept his cool on the 18th with a birdie to force a play-off.

The 482-yard par-four 18th hole was selected for the play-off and while both players made par at the first attempt, Gerard took five shots on the second occasion, allowing Poston to clinch his first victory of 2026.
