Police have contained a large group of masked far-right protestors in Glasgow following threats by the group that they would bring the city centre to a “standstill”.
Footage shared online showed the group, many wearing balaclavas, walking down Buchanan Street at around 4.20pm on Tuesday. They made their way towards Charing Cross, where they were stopped by officers.
A video shared on social media showed the masked group being held by dozens of uniformed cops outside the notorious Best Kebab shop on Dundas Street. It’s understood the protest was organised by a group called the Scottish Citizen Army, who named it “Operation Standstill”.
The organisers issued a statement on social media, warning the public that they “will hold up journeys home from work” and that it “regrets the disruption”.
They also warned of more disruptive demonstrations “until the Government listens.” The post read: “We apologise to drivers delayed later today. This afternoon’s protest will hold up journeys home from work.
“We know that will anger people. We are doing it because working people in Scotland are already paying more tax, waiting longer for homes and treatment, and watching homelessness, mental health demand and drug deaths rise.
“Operation Standstill begins today for those who cannot get out to say this themselves. We regret the disruption. Until the Government listens, it will continue.”
Despite this, no disruption was reported in the city centre and the group were quickly contained by police. The force has confirmed that there was no risk to the wider public and work is underway to disperse the group. It is not yet known if any arrests have been made in connection.
It comes after hundreds of anti-immigration protesters dressed in black and wearing balaclavas brought the Port of Dover to a standstill by blocking key access roads on Saturday.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 4.20pm on Tuesday, September 8, 2026 we were made aware of a large group of people gathered in Buchannan Street, Glasgow.
“The group made their way through the city centre towards Charing Cross where officers contained them to engage, maintain public safety and minimise disruption. “They are in the process of being dispersed from the area, and there was no wider risk to the public or disruption to travel networks.”
