Barclays has announced plans to open new bank branches

Barclays has issued a significant announcement on its plans for UK branches. The bank stated it “continues to strengthen its presence in communities across the UK, as it announces investment in branches around the country as part of a broader programme to modernise and evolve its physical network”.

New branches are set to open in Poole and Bishops Stortford this September, with additional openings scheduled before the year’s end, including one in Beverley during November. These relocations and refurbishments are taking place alongside the continued rollout of Premier Suites and the introduction of smart ATMs, the bank confirmed.

Barclays acknowledged that, while “customers increasingly choose digital banking for everyday transactions”, it recognises “that many of life’s most important financial decisions still benefit from expert guidance and face-to-face support”.

The bank explained that these latest developments have been “informed by customer demand and growth opportunities” and are “designed to bring together the best of both worlds: the convenience of digital and self-service banking, alongside access to expert colleagues when customers need it most”.

The new branches in Poole, Bishop’s Stortford and Beverley “reflect changing customer needs”, according to Barclays. In addition to self-service technology for routine transactions, they will feature consultation rooms, private meeting spaces and access to specialist support for customers requiring guidance on more complex banking needs or key life events.

Barclays also announced it had recently extended opening hours across its entire branch network, creating more than 60,000 additional hours of in-branch availability each year.

Vim Maru, chief executive of Barclays UK, said: “The opening of our new branches in Poole, Bishops Stortford, and Beverley is another demonstration of our commitment to investing in communities across the UK and ensuring customers can reach our people when it matters most.

“While customers increasingly choose digital banking for everyday transactions, we know that some of life’s most important financial decisions, whether buying a home, planning for retirement or investing for the future, benefit from a personal conversation with one of our colleagues.

“These new branches have been designed around those moments, providing customers with access to specialist support, alongside the convenience of self-service and digital banking.

“Our ambition is to give customers the best of both worlds: leading digital services for day-to-day banking and the expertise of our colleagues for more complex needs.

“By bringing these together, we’re creating a banking experience that offers greater choice, flexibility and confidence, however our customers choose to bank.”

Presley Gerber thanked his father for his support in a poignant Instagram post shared four months before his death.

It was confirmed on Monday that Presely, the model son of supermodel Cindy Crawford and her husband Rande Gerber, has died at age 27 following a years-long struggle with drugs, panic attacks and his mental health.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner said that Presley died on Sunday at a rehab facility in a devastating end to a battle he had increasingly laid bare in brutally candid social media posts. His cause of death was not revealed.

Late last year Presley started talking about his mental health battle in Instagram posts.

In a May 2026 post he shared his gratitude for his father, posting a photo of the pair paddle boarding together as he wrote about the man he said had steadfastly supported him through his darkest periods.

‘I have the best father in the world. He’s never given up on me. He’s always there for me. Always has the best advice for me. I appreciate this man more than words can explain. I love you pops. To more paddle boarding days around the world.’

Rande responded in the comments: ‘I am honored [to] take this ride called life with you over and over any time. Sometimes we may fall but with a little help always get back up. I love you forever Prez.’

Cindy also showed her support, commenting, ‘My boys!’

Presely later deleted the post. He previously explained how he frequently stepped back from his social media platforms or deleted content to focus on his well-being.

Other posts that still remain on his accout include a heartfelt dedication to his mother to mark her birthday in 2024. 

‘Mom. Thank you. Thank you for all of the amazing support and love you have showed me,’ Presely wrote. 

‘Thank you for being a role model. You are one of my greatest inspirations. From relationships to work you have taught me so much. I am grateful for you every day. I have infinite love for you.’ 

Presley’s final Instagram post was shared on August 5 and featured him barefoot and smiling as he modelled clothing from Vuori Clothing, a favourite brand of his family’s.

The previous post, shared on March 26, saw Presely opening up on some of the methods he was trying to overcome his health battles.

A flood dose is a single, high-dose administration of a substance – most commonly ibogaine, a psychoactive compound derived from plants and used in specialised addiction clinics. The high-dose is designed to induce a profound psychoactive and physiological ‘reset’. 

Ibogaine is illegal in the US, where it is classified as a Schedule I controlled substance but it is Iegal or permitted by prescription in countries like Canada and Brazil.

Presley captioned the video: ‘Pre Ibogaine Flood Dose – quiet moment before everything changed. i was absolutely terrified, and I knew I would be again if I ever had to face something like this (helps to not go into the situations you do that get ya there but that’s life sometimes.)’

‘(my mantras were love yourself and lis gotta be the last time for this reason. letting go of control didn’t come easy, but I trusted there was something bigger than me guiding it.’

‘Unfortunately, I’ve had a lot of loss in many different forms recently, so that is not an excuse, but it’s the reason why I am where I’m at now,’ he shared.

He did not go into detail about the ‘loss’ he referenced, but went on to explain that he also takes a dose of Xanax at night or when his ‘panic attacks are really, really bad.’

The model then listed Valium, admitting that he didn’t know exactly how much he’d been taking as he said, ‘Who f***ing knows anymore.’

He noted in the Instagram reel that ‘doctors say a lot of different things so it’s kind of scary. But hopefully between my research and their research and the world and God, we can finally figure this out.’

Presley also talked about the lack of ‘direction’ he has from doctors when it comes to his medication.

‘I’d like doctors to be like, “Take this three times a day.” But every psychiatrist I’ve had – and I’ve had 15 – are like, “Here’s 20 medications and take this if you feel like this, take this as needed.”

‘And I’m like, “No, don’t give me that much leeway.” I need some direction,’ he continued.

Kaia, told Vogue that witnessing her brother’s honesty was ‘refreshing.’

‘My parents for most of our lives were very, very private and didn’t share anything – and now we have this absolute teacher, my brother, who says, “I’m gonna be very human for everyone.” There’s only so much you can hide from the world,’ she said.

‘And trying to put a lid on something just makes the person feel like you’re ashamed of them.’ 

North Yorkshire Council has confirmed that Ravenseat to Keld, will be closed from Monday, September 28, until Friday, November 6.

The closure is required for work at Beck Meetings Bridge, where the existing three-span stone clapper structure is set to be replaced.

Roadworks information published for the scheme shows a signed diversion of around 60.88km, or almost 38 miles, which is expected to take motorists about an hour to complete.

The bridge carries the B6270 over the Crooked Sike watercourse.

According to information for road users, the work will involve the “replacement of a 3-span stone clapper with a precast concrete u-duct and concrete top slab”.

The diversion will be in force throughout the closure period.

The lengthy alternative route takes motorists away from the affected stretch before eventually bringing them back towards their original route, with part of the diversion travelling towards Cliff Gate Road.

The reverse route will apply for traffic travelling in the opposite direction.

A North Yorkshire Council traffic order states: “North Yorkshire Council intends to make this Order to prohibit any vehicle from using Ravenseat To Boundary, Keld due to necessary bridge repair works.

“It is envisaged that the restriction will be in force from September 28, 2026 until November 6, 2026.”

Although the legal traffic order allows for a maximum duration extending until 20 March, 2028, this does not mean the road is expected to remain closed for that length of time.

The council says the restriction will only apply when traffic signs are in place, with a local alternative route also signed where appropriate.

Motorists travelling through the area are being advised to follow diversion signs and allow additional time for their journeys.

A number of roads in Salford, including Lancaster Road, were cordoned off by police on Sunday

A major police response in Salford was linked to a counter-terrorism operation in Manchester city centre over the weekend, it has been confirmed.

Police swarmed Newton Street in the Northern Quarter on Sunday afternoon (September 20) as part of an ongoing Counter Terrorism Policing investigation. A large cordon was put in place on the scene into Sunday evening.

A spokesperson from the Metropolitan Police said two men were arrested under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000. They were taken into custody for questioning.

At the same time on Sunday evening, a major operation was underway on Lancaster Road in Salford. Lancaster Road was cordoned off near Eccles Old Road and around its junction with Cholmondeley Road – with a 100m cordon in place.

Voltaire Avenue was also blocked, with photos showing a number of Tactical Aid Unit (TAU) vans in the area. Pictures from the scene showed a large police presence, with officers and vehicles gathered around the cordon.

In an update issued this morning (Monday), a Greater Manchester Police spokesperson confirmed the incidents in Salford and Manchester city centre were linked. The M.E.N has contacted the Metropolitan and Counter Terrorism police for further information.

It is understood that there was no public threat amid the incidents. In a previous statement on the Manchester city centre police response yesterday, a spokesperson from the Metropolitan Police said: “At around 14:45 today (Sunday 20 September 2026) at Newton Street, Manchester officers from Counter Terrorism Policing arrested two individuals as part of an ongoing Counter Terrorism Policing investigation.

“Both males were arrested under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000. The operation was led by Counter Terrorism Policing London, working closely with Counter Terrorism Policing North West and Greater Manchester Police.

“Those arrested remain in police custody. At this time, there is no information to suggest any wider threat to the public.

“Counter Terrorism Policing continues to work closely with policing partners across the country to help keep the public safe. We understand that activity of this nature may cause concern and, alongside local forces, we remain committed to providing reassurance, protective security advice and support to communities.

“We encourage anyone who sees or hears anything suspicious or concerning to report it via gov.uk/ACT or by calling the Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789 321. Due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, we are unable to provide further details at this stage.”

Chiltern Railways’ services became the latest to transition into public ownership on Sunday, marking the sixth train operator to be nationalised by the Government.

The operator, which was privatised in 1996, provides rail connections running between London Marylebone, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, and the West Midlands.

From December, the Department for Transport (DfT) confirmed that 25 additional daily Chiltern Railways services will be introduced to help tackle “overcrowding”, delivering 10,000 extra seats during each weekday. This plan incorporates half-hourly weekday trains running along the Chiltern main line between London and Birmingham, as well as an increase in weekend journeys.

Rail minister Lord Hendy said: “Every transfer into public ownership gives us the chance to tackle the bread-and-butter issues people care about – more frequent, comfortable trains that turn up on time.

“As we set up Great British Railways (GBR), we’re putting passengers first.

“It will not happen overnight, but we will build a railway the country can trust and rely on and that will create growth, jobs and homes.”

The UK’s largest train operator, Govia Thameslink Railway, alongside c2c, Greater Anglia, South Western Railway, and West Midlands Trains, have already been brought into public ownership by the Government.

Services operated by Great Western Railways are scheduled to follow on December 13. Meanwhile, LNER, Northern, Southeastern, and TransPennine Express were previously nationalised prior to Labour coming into power.

When established, GBR will function as a new public sector body, uniting responsibility for tracks and trains under a single organisation for the first time since the mid-1990s privatisation. Key legislation required to form GBR was set out in the recent King’s Speech.

Minor disruption occurred during the initial day under state control, with rail lines towards Oxford and London Marylebone temporarily blocked on Sunday morning after overrunning engineering work near Bicester Village was not completed on time, according to the train operating company.

Services on the Chiltern Mainline were expected to be “much busier” than usual between Birmingham and London Marylebone throughout Sunday due to a late-notice closure of the West Coast Main Line affecting travel at London Euston.

The train firm confirmed it would operate extra trains between Birmingham and London Marylebone “with significantly enhanced capacity”, while warning that queuing systems would be enforced at major stations, including London Marylebone and Birmingham Moor Street.

Rail replacement bus services operated across certain routes and smaller stations, with no trains running between Amersham and Aylesbury Vale Parkway all day Sunday. Customers were advised to check their journey before travel.

And a Stanford University study published in January 2024 reported that ibogaine significantly improved symptoms of anxiety and depression in 30 veterans.

According to the Washington Post, ibogaine became prohibited in America in 1967.

‘It heals the brain,’ neurologist Deborah Mash explained to the publication in March 2024, noting that the substance rewires the organ by promoting growth of ‘neural networks in damaged brains.’

After a week dominating the headlines, the royal war of words was the subject of comedy show SNL UK’s first sketch of the night on Saturday.

The sketch saw the cast bring back Princess Diana as an AI assistant for King Charles, mocking the monarch allegedly saying that she would be forgotten “soon enough” while arguing with Earl Charles Spencer over her funeral arrangements in 1997.

Spencer made the bombshell claim in an extract his upcoming memoir, Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, with Buckingham Palace responding by saying that “the pain of fraternal grief can cloud, reason, affect judgement and colour memory in ways others do not recognise”.

Sir Ed Davey has said “often families have these quarrels, and often they go back to things that may or may not have been said decades ago”, in regards to Earl Spencer’s claims about the King.
