Residents in Crossfield Crescent, off Fordlands Road, Fulford, were told to stay out of their homes as a long police cordon was put up to block access at both ends of the crescent.
Eyewitnesses said the large-scale emergency response followed an ‘explosion’ behind a semi-detached property when a man is believed to have sustained burns.
Fire crews from York and Tadcaster rushed to the scene with a North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson saying: “We responded to a fire to a gas cylinder in the garden of a residential property.
“Crews established a cordon and used a ground monitor to cool the cylinder. The cylinder was submerged in water whilst it vented off and monitored throughout.”

A service spokesperson said earlier today: “A number of fire engines and officers are currently in attendance.
“Due to reports that cylinders are involved, a safety cordon has been established and a number of nearby properties have been evacuated as a precaution.
“Crews are expected to remain at the scene for some time. Please avoid the area.”
The fire service issued this update at 4.45pm this afternoon: “Crews have been cooling the cylinder which was in the garden of a property. They will remain at the scene for some time to carry out monitoring.
“The nearby residents who were evacuated are being allowed to re-enter their homes with safety precautions in place.”

Lewis Abley was in the kitchen at his home in Fordlands Road when he became aware of the disturbance.
Lewis told The Press: “I was having lunch when I heard an explosion. It sounded like something going through gas mains. You could hear the flames coming out and the projection of the heat.
“I ran upstairs and looked out the window at the back and couldn’t see anything but I could see the ripple of heat over the fences. The noise was so loud.
“I climbed onto the roof of my garage which backs onto the gardens and shouted ‘are you okay?’ I couldn’t see the man at first but then I saw him come away from the ripple of heat and one side of his clothes had been burnt off.”

Lewis said he ran to the property where other neighbours were standing outside their homes, and the casualty’s wife also came out on the phone to emergency services.
“I ran into the back garden to see that the man had drilled a hole in a five-foot tall gas cylinder which was firing out a one-metre by two metre size flame,” said Lewis.
“It was that bright you couldn’t directly look at it. The conifers were within two metres proximity and the man was wetting everything down with a hose pipe.
“I then started wetting everything down with the hose pipe that he had been using. I lost sight of him. I went back and he was hanging over the kitchen sink wetting himself with cold water. You could see the severity of his burns.
“I kept checking on him and running into the garden to hose down and then to reassure his wife.”
The fire brigade arrived shortly afterwards and told everyone to leave the houses.
When praised for his actions, Lewis, a landscape gardener who previously served in the Army, said it was ‘what anybody would do’.
“I knew I had to do something as it was pretty intense.”
Lewis’s mother Tracey Abley said she had never seen such a big emergency response.
“I thought there’d been a murder. It’s like something off the TV.”
A spokesperson for the Yorkshire Ambulance Service confirmed that crews had responded to an incident at a private address in Fulford on Wednesday morning but no further details were available.
