The new world’s most wanted: Now Daniel Kinahan is behind bars, the $1bn narco ‘Chubby Jos’ who’s living ‘like a king’ in palm fringed Sierra Leone beach resort after fathering a baby with the president’s DAUGHTER

Dutch cocaine baron Jos Leijdekkers, 35, is now one of the world's most wanted men and the Dutch authorities are desperate to bring him to justice

The palm-fringed resort of Two Seasons on Tokeh Beach in Sierra Leone offers privacy, seclusion and plenty of accommodation for a retinue of staff and security.

The mountains behind are topped with lush tropical greenery, and to the west, there’s only the Atlantic, next-stop South America.

Everything, in fact, that a fugitive drugs kingpin with a price on his head could ask for.

But Dutch cocaine baron Jos Leijdekkers, 35, has found a lot more to his taste in this deeply corrupt nation than the clutch of upmarket beach villas he now calls home.

Since the dramatic arrest of ‘cartel leader’ Daniel Kinahan in Dubai earlier this month – and his extradition to face charges in Ireland – the mantle of ‘world’s most wanted ‘drug smuggler’ has now passed to Leijdekker along with increased global interest in how he is hiding out.

Remarkably, he is believed to be married to the daughter of Sierra Leone’s president, and the couple are said to have a child together.

Leijdekkers, now officially the world’s most wanted man, is said to glide on the 20-minute drive between Tokeh and the capital Freetown in a blacked-out Mercedes, escorted by his own motorcade, whose armed members may or may not be in the employ of the government.

For the past few years Liejdekkers has lived high on the hog in Sierra Leone, where he has been photographed both with the President’s daughter, Agnes Bio, 31, and on his own on the fringes of a nightclub brawl.

He has adopted the pseudonym Omar Sheriff, but everyone knows him as ‘Bolle’ Jos (Dutch for chubby, though he has clearly toned up since that moniker was bestowed).

Though he may be on the run from the Dutch and Belgian authorities, who have sentenced him to more than 100 years in his absence, in the appropriately named Freetown, he apparently has nothing to fear.

But last week, news of a dramatic attempt to seize him by Dutch special forces in international waters emerged when he was believed to be planning a rare trip by sea to nearby Ivory Coast.

The top-secret mission was aborted twice at the 11th hour, whether because of a leak, or a change in Leijdekkers’ plans is not clear.

But it is no coincidence that he has chosen Sierra Leone to ‘hide out’ in plain sight.

The country is now a pivotal link in the international drugs trade between South America and Europe and some believe that under Mr Leijdekkers’ insidious influence, this former British Colony risks becoming a ‘narco state’ itself.

Now the Netherlands is intensifying its legal and political efforts to flush out Mr Leijdekkers from Sierra Leone, where he has become untouchable thanks to his seat at the top table.

The campaign to ‘Get Jos’ gained fresh impetus this May after Spain’s Civil Guard seized more than 30 tons of cocaine, the largest single seizure of the drug in history, from a cargo ship organised, police say, by Mr Leijdekkers himself.

The Comoros-flagged Arconian was intercepted in international waters after leaving Freetown, Sierra Leone’s capital and biggest port, with an illicit drugs cargo worth an estimated £700million.

The ship was due to meet smaller speedboats at sea that would have distributed the drugs towards the Spanish coast in a delivery said to have been personally arranged by Mr Leijdekkers.

The Dutch government is now pressuring the European Union to threaten to cut off aid to beleaguered Sierra Leone to persuade its government to hand over the fugitive.

Mr Leijdekkers, born in Holland, has close ties with drugs networks from all over the world, including the newly leaderless Mr Kinahan cartel – after figurehead Daniel’s life of luxury in Dubai was dramatically curtailed by a police raid.

But the Dutchman – sentenced in his absence to more than 100 years in Holland and Belgium and a record fine of £82million for drug trafficking – need fear no such sanction from the government of Sierra Leone thanks to his close association with the President’s daughter Agnes – who enjoys her own diplomatic immunity as a United Nations representative of her father, President Julius Maada Bio’s government.

The couple were videoed sitting only two rows behind the President and first Lady, Fatima Maada Bio, Agnes’s stepmother in January 2025.

Several Bio family members and top government officials were at the New Year’s Day thanksgiving service in the President’s home village of Tihun, Southern Province.

Initial reports that the wanted criminal was seeing his daughter were denied by President Bio, who insisted he did not know Mr Leijdekkers.

The Mail approached the Sierra Leone government for comment.

Footage obtained by Dutch media also shows Mr Leijdekkers at a private birthday party in March 2024 for Alusine Kanneh, Sierra Leone’s immigration chief, where he presented a gift during the celebration.

US magazine New Lines discovered that Mr Leijdekkers had recently taken legal control of the villas at Two Seasons through a Lebanese business associate.

The article into Mr Leijdekkers’ life in Freetown painted a picture of a man frequenting nightclubs and casinos accompanied by his driver and bodyguards, always teetotal, but also flush with cash, bestowing tips of ‘$500 to $1,000 for all the staff each time he visited’.

Such amounts are unheard of in Sierra Leone, where the average monthly wage hovers somewhere between $40 and $150.

Agnes Bio is a particular favourite of her father’s, who has promoted her career in the foreign service.

After serving as an ‘advisor’ in the foreign ministry, she is now accredited to Sierra Leone’s permanent mission to the UN in New York and is therefore immune from arrest or detention or having her bags searched on entry or exit from the United States.

In Freetown, the convicted Dutch criminal Mr Leijdekkers reportedly moves freely around with his own security detail and gave expensive imported 4x4s and limousines to several of the most influential ministers.

The extent of his influence in the former French colony is nothing short of chilling, according to local journalist Kandeh Sesay. In an interview with crime reporter John van den Heuvel, for Dutch newspaper Panorama.nl, Mr Sesay spoke of deep-rooted criminal influence extending to the highest echelons of government.

Mr Sesay, who reported on Mr Leijdekkers for years, eventually found himself forced to flee the country. He continues his investigative work from the United States because, he says that returning to Sierra Leone could be fatal.

The threats he received left nothing to the imagination: journalists were reportedly offered thousands of dollars to stop writing about the Dutchman. Those who refused were warned: shut up or die.

‘Leijdekkers is everywhere,’ says Mr Sesay. ‘From the president’s family to the immigration service and customs at the port. Wherever you look, he is the man calling the shots.’

According to the journalist, the cartel Leijdekkers is part of is so powerful that whistleblowers or troublesome journalists disappear without a second thought – through kidnapping, torture, or false accusations.

The alleged aftermath of the video clip of the nightclub brawl involving Mr Leijdekkers certainly lends weight to those threats.

In the footage a Lebanese reveller at Scarlet, a coastal club near Freetown, was apparently angry that Mr Leijdekkers and his entourage were being allowed to jump the queue snaking outside the nightspot on New Year’s Eve, 2023.

A fight erupted and the Lebanese, called Fawaz, smashed a bottle over one of Mr Leijdekkers’ bodyguard’s head.

Hours later, as Fawaz left the club, he was brutally attacked in the underground car park.

Seven shots rang out and Fawaz crumpled to the ground with both his kneecaps shattered.

A police report said the bodyguard fired the shots but according to sources in the country, others believed Mr Leijdekkers himself was responsible.

Journalist Josef Skrdlik, based in west Africa, investigated Mr Leijdekkers and firmly tied him to the Arconian shipment.

He told the Mail: ‘Our investigation has linked the Arconian to two other similar voyages by small cargo vessels from Freetown to North Africa in recent years, both organised by Leijdekkers‘ network. All three vessels were previously owned and managed by companies headquartered at the same German address, and had the same ship safety manager in Turkey.

‘The two previous voyages were characterised by repeated loitering events near the Canary Islands, Morocco and Spain. Such activity may indicate potential drop-offs at sea, where cocaine is typically picked up by smaller boats and brought to shore. According to Spanish authorities, this is how the Arconian’s cargo was to be offloaded.

‘This modus operandi is becoming increasingly prominent in West Africa-Europe cocaine trafficking, and Leijdekkers’ network appears to be a major player.’

In May 2026, Mr Leijdekkers’ elder brother Wilhelmus was arrested in Istanbul on cocaine trafficking charges, and extradited to the Netherlands the following month.

Extraditing Leijdekkers to the Netherlands has proved to be virtually impossible.

There is no extradition treaty between the two countries and widespread corruption casts a shadow over any potential co-operation.

While the Netherlands attempts to recover millions and continues a global manhunt, the image is growing in Sierra Leone of a man who has entrenched himself deep in the political and economic infrastructure through power, money, and fear.

For the time being, ‘Bolle Jos’ seems untouchable, and some observers believe Sierra Leone is in danger of unwittingly being turned into a narco state.

Mr Leijdekkers’ tentacles stretch much further from his west African bolthole to Turkey and Dubai and his organisation’s turnover is estimated at up to £145million per month – or £1.7billion a year – by the Dutch Public Prosecution Service.

His rise, from the pudgy son of a sex club boss in Breda, Holland, to one of the most influential ‘narcos’ in the world, appears to have relied on two factors – his uncanny ability to stay one step ahead of the law, and the ruthlessness with which he despatches anyone who dares cross him.

By 2019, he was operating at the centre of an international cocaine network moving consignments through the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp.

Intercepted Sky Encrochat messages gave investigators an extraordinary insight into the scale of the operation and, prosecutors say, Mr Leijdekkers’ position as one of its principal organisers.

The Dutch police say the seven tons of cocaine involved in the case for which he was eventually convicted may have represented only a fraction of the drugs passing through his network.

And increasingly, violence became part of his business model.

In one case, a consignment intended for Finland ended up at a company with no connection to the drugs. Leijdekkers responded by sending men to recover it.

According to prosecutors, messages showed him directing his men to dominate the occupants, hold a driver at gunpoint and take control of the shipment. One employee was injured during the resulting robbery. A Rotterdam court later convicted Mr Leijdekkers of the offence and described the ease with which he organised violence as ‘almost frivolous’.

There were even more chilling allegations.

In early 2020, prosecutors said, Mr Leijdekkers commissioned the killing of Utrecht gym owner Robin van Ouwerkerk, offering €200,000 for the job.

Intercepted messages included the victim’s address and a photograph, according to Dutch reports. The planned assassination was never carried out, but the Rotterdam court convicted Mr Leijdekkers of ordering the murder.

His name has also been linked by Dutch investigators to the disappearance of Dutch-Moroccan Naima Jillal, a woman involved in the drugs world who vanished in Amsterdam in October 2019.

Police say encrypted communications indicated that Mr Leijdekkers had a role in her disappearance, while photographs recovered from a seized phone appeared to show a naked woman’s mutilated body whom investigators believe may have been Ms Jillal after she had been tortured.

She has never been found. Mr Leijdekkers has not been convicted over Ms Jillal’s disappearance, and the Dutch police continue to describe it as an investigation.

The most revealing evidence of Mr Leijdekkers’s rise may be found not in the streets but in the extraordinary quantities of money and valuables investigators say passed through his hands.

The Dutch Public Prosecution Service has calculated that he derived at least £190million in unlawful benefit from his criminal activities.

The investigation has uncovered evidence of a man who did not simply spend his drug profits on cars, watches and nightlife, but attempted to turn them into an international portfolio of assets including property.

According to prosecutors, encrypted communications revealed that Mr Leijdekkers bought an astonishing 975kg of gold, paying more than £40million for it in less than six months.

Investigators also uncovered evidence concerning property, including an apartment at the luxury Vogue Hotel Supreme in Bodrum, Turkey.

Dutch police have long known that Mr Leijdekkers travelled between Turkey and the United Arab Emirates, and in 2023 investigators searched the homes and offices of members of his family after his parents and sister had travelled to Turkey, where they were suspected of having contact with him.

Cash was found in euros, Turkish lira, Swiss francs and UAE dirhams, alongside expensive watches, jewellery and designer handbags.

More recently, prosecutors have identified apartments in Dubai belonging to him and associates at the Grandeur Residences on the Palm Jumeirah, not far from a villa owned by David and Victoria Beckham.

Two Bentleys and a Rolls-Royce were also among assets allegedly connected to Mr Leijdekkers’s family.

The picture that emerges is of a fugitive who built not merely a drugs business but an elaborate financial infrastructure around it – moving between Turkey and Dubai, buying gold and property and surrounding himself and his family with luxury goods.

And while Dutch investigators have been trying to dismantle that empire from afar, Mr Leijdekkers has continued to enjoy the protection of distance.

His move to Sierra Leone appears to have taken him from the familiar world of European ports and criminal networks into something potentially far more valuable to a fugitive: a hiding place in plain sight where, despite his convictions and international notoriety, he can live openly in the very heart of the political elite.

Guy Weski, Mr Leijdekkers’s lawyer in Rotterdam, was approached for comment.

A teacher has been jailed after ‘manipulating’ a teenage boy into sex and abusing her position of trust.

Private tutor Emily Drury, 26, from Mablethorpe, was handed a four-and-a-half-year sentence at Lincoln Crown Court after being arrested last June.

Drury admitted five counts of sexual activity with a child, pleading guilty to the charge of engaging in non-penetrative sexual activity with a teenage boy and four charges of engaging in penetrative sexual activity with a teenage boy.

However, police said she ‘delayed her guilty plea until the very last opportunity’, prolonging uncertainty and difficulty for the victim.

Judge James House KC said only a custodial sentence was appropriate due to the severity of her crimes.

She sexually abused the 15-year-old on numerous occasions between May and June 2025, having targeted him after seeing him drinking with friends and offering to tutor him in private ahead of his exams.

The court heard how she warned the boy, ‘You can’t tell anyone about this,’ with prosecutor Amber Hobson explaining that he agreed before confiding in two of his friends, sending them a picture of Drury.

After ‘rumours’ began, word reached the boy’s school, and the police were contacted.

The court also heard how, when interviewed, the boy permitted police to look through his phone, on which they found a message from the ex-teacher, referring to a note and cash she left him.

‘I enjoy every piece of you. I don’t know how to stop, or what this is. Here’s £20 just in case…Your Em xoxo’, it read.

A victim impact statement from the boy was read out during sentencing, with Drury seen wiping tears from her eyes.

‘Since getting married, her and her husband didn’t really talk, they weren’t having sex and marriage wasn’t what she expected,’ the student said Drury told him.

‘She treated me kindly, told me she was obsessed with me.’

The boy recalled Drury saying ‘positive things’ to him, buying him clothes, and making him ‘feel better’ about himself.

A ???despicable??? woman who ???abused her position of trust??? has been jailed after having sex with a teenage boy. Former teacher Emily Drury, of Tuplin Road, Mablethorpe, engaged in sexual activity with the boy on numerous occasions, Lincoln Crown Court heard.
Drury must serve at least half of her four-year, six-month sentence (Picture: BPM Media)

‘I trusted her and confided in her about some very personal things.’

He continued: ‘I felt judged. I felt that people blamed me. I felt unable to simply be a child.’

Reluctant to report the abuse initially, he said he was ‘worried that people would not take [him] seriously’ because of his gender.

‘I believed there was a stigma attached to being a male victim of sexual abuse, and that fear made it even harder to cope.’

He concluded: ‘I realised I had been manipulated. I was put into a situation where I was experiencing emotions and situations no child should have to experience.’

Drury’s defence barrister, Jeremy Janes, said she had hoped to have a ‘lifelong career’, which, because of her behaviour, she has now lost.

He said his client pursued an ‘uncharacteristic, fantastical, and unreal relationship’ with the child.

Character references from her parents and brother were also submitted to the court, with her husband and other relatives in attendance.

Drury was told by the judge how the lasting impact of the abuse would continue in the boy’s mind while he was approaching his exams.

‘She was in a position of trust. She was the adult; he was the child,’ he said while passing sentencing.

‘This was not simply a single indiscretion – that would have been bad enough.’

Drury must serve a minimum of half of her four-year, six-month sentence before she can be considered for release.

In addition to jail time, she has been given a sexual harm prevention order and a restraining order lasting five years. She will be on the sex offenders register for 10 years.

Detective Constable Julie Jode, from Lincolnshire Police, called her actions ‘despicable’.

‘As an adult in a position of authority, she was expected to provide guidance, support, and protection. Instead, she used that position to target and manipulate someone who should have been able to trust her implicitly.

‘The victim in this case was forced to navigate an incredibly difficult and challenging period of his life while also facing the uncertainty of a lengthy criminal justice process. The fact that the offender delayed accepting responsibility only added to that ordeal.’

Police have praised the boy’s ‘remarkable courage and resilience’ in bringing Drury to justice, insisting that ‘gender is not a factor in how reports of sexual abuse are investigated’.

A nightmare start for Michael Carrick (Picture: Shutterstock Editorial)

Peter Schemichel took aim at three Manchester United stars for their roles in the woeful opening day defeat to Hull City.

Pre-season optimism was chipped away inside 38 minutes on Saturday afternoon as the newly-promoted Tigers took a 2-0 lead through goals from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy.

Michael Carrick’s side were twice undone by set pieces with Ajayi lashing into the roof of the net after Oli McBurnie’s initial effort was pushed onto the bar by Senne Lammens.

Record signing Mendy added a second shortly before half-time, powering home a header from Regan Slater’s free kick.

United were in disarray for Hull’s opener, beaten to the first ball in the build-up which led to the corner. As the ball came in, Dorgu let the ball pass him with Heaven not tight enough to McBurnie as he forced the ball back towards goal.

Dissecting the goal at half-time, Schmeichel blasted Dorgu for ‘not looking at the ball’, insisting Heaven had to be stronger dealing with the Hull striker.

‘Look at Dorgu on the front post, he is not even looking at the guy taking the corner kick,’ the United legend told Premier League Productions.

Schmeichel also took a dim view of United’s defending for the second goal. As United and Hull players jostled for position inside the box as the free kick was being taken, Luke Shaw was spotted inexplicably dropping back to play the opposition onside.

Schmeichel added at full-time: ‘It is the absolute lack of concentration from Man United. That’s what disappoints me the most.

‘I picked on Luke Shaw. Luke Shaw is two yards behind everyone else, playing everyone else onside.

‘He shouldn’t be there. He fell for the dummy. If he stayed up there, he would be either offside or it would have gone out for a goal kick.

Trump finally TURNS on ‘low IQ’ Tucker Carlson in blistering takedown after former ally met with ex-MAGA congress members to plot serious threat to the President’s legacy

Published

on

President Donald Trump has turned against his once-ally, Tucker Carlson, calling the former Fox personality a 'loser' with a 'very low IQ'

President Donald Trump has turned against his former ally, Tucker Carlson, as he accuses the journalist of being in cahoots with politicians to take him down.

Trump, 80, took shots at Carlson late Friday night as he turned into bed, calling the former Fox personality a ‘loser’ with a ‘very low IQ.’

‘Tucker’s “Views” have fallen through the floor, and will only get worse. Nobody cares about him any longer in that he has become totally irrelevant, and happens to be, surprisingly, a very Low-IQ individual,’ he wrote on Truth Social.

‘Tucker wants to run for political office, but he should be required to take a cognitive test.’

Carlson, 57, has not announced a bid for a political office and has previously said he didn’t intend to run.

However, Carlson told the Columbia Journalism Review that he hopes to help build a ‘third party,’ and laid out a ten-point vision for America.

There’s also been speculation that some conservatives are vying to have Carlson run for president in 2028, running on a MAGA, but anti-Trump platform.

A loose group of politicians has formed around Carlson, including Representative Thomas Massie and former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, both of whom Trump also attacked on Friday night.

‘LOSERS ALL!’ the President wrote. ‘Tucker is a loser, and always has been!

‘Marjorie Taylor Brown (Green turns to Brown under stress!), a highly neurotic young woman, went from Ultra Conservative to a Liberal “Fool,” all in a matter of weeks, because I refused to return her phone calls – Not because I didn’t like her, just because I had no time.’

He went on to accuse her of ‘quitting’ after she realized she had no chance at winning after he stripped his endorsement.

‘Thomas Massie has turned out to be a failed politician, and a real JERK,’ Trump continued. ‘He thought it was really wonderful to vote, “NO,” on everything, no matter how good, strong, or proper the Legislation would be.

‘What a team this would be, THREE LOSERS, and a pocketful of change! The only chance they have is to join the Radical Left Dumocrats, and try breaking into the Primary System. To all of them I say, PRAISE BE TO ALLAH!’ he signed off.

Massie responded to the insults on X, writing: ‘Trump’s getting roasted today for his disastrous beef policy, the debt hit $40 trillion because of his “big beautiful bill,” he stepped-in-it in Iran, and he’s weeks away from failing his midterms in November.

‘He posted this because we are the three he should have listened to.’

Greene also launched an attack against Trump, saying he’s the one who moved away from MAGA ideals.

‘He attacks us with such vitriol because we actually are everything he claimed to be, conservative and America First, and he has proven as President that he is nothing more than a neocon puppet for Israel, corporations, big donors with special interests, and his dear friends in the Epstein class.

‘We never changed, Trump did.’

8 Things Geriatric Medicine Doctors Wish You’d Do Every Day

8 Things Geriatric Medicine Doctors Wish You’d Do Every Day

“Longevity” is the buzzword of the moment on social media. Everyone wants to live longer and healthier. And while some factors aren’t in your control, many habits will greatly impact your longevity and quality of life as you age.

“It really is a lifetime of health that makes you have healthy ageing and good longevity and good healthspan,” said Dr Elizabeth Eckstrom, a professor of medicine in the division of general internal medicine and geriatrics at Oregon Health and Science University School of Medicine.

Even aspects of your early life, such as your childhood education, can affect how you age, according to Dr David Nace, a geriatrician at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

That said, “no matter what age you are, you can start now and still have huge benefits from doing things – don’t let anyone think it’s too late to start with lifestyle changes,” Eckstrom noted.

Below, geriatric medicine experts share the habits they wish folks would commit to throughout their lives, whether they’re 22 or 92.

1. Prioritise exercise

Physical activity is paramount for healthy ageing. Dr Nace said it’s specifically important to stay active through midlife, which he defined as ages 35 to 64, though you should prioritise it outside of this timeframe, too.

Getting exercise doesn’t have to mean going to the gym or a workout class (although those are great options). It can mean going for a walk or gardening, if that’s what you prefer, Dr Nace said.

Staying active helps you sleep better, feel better, manage your weight, and reduces the risk of arthritis. “It just has benefits all the way around,” Dr Nace added.

2. Consider trying tai chi.

“When I talk about exercise, I talk mostly about tai chi,” Dr Eckstrom said.

Research shows that doing tai chi reduces the risk of falls in older adults by about 60%. “Falls [are] one of the major reasons that people have disability and death over age 65,” Dr Eckstrom noted.

“But some of our newer work shows that it also improves brain function, so if you do tai chi two to three hours per week on average, it will give you an additional three to six years of healthy brain life. That’s a lot,” she said.

Doing tai chi regularly also lowers blood pressure and cholesterol and reduces pain. “So, everybody should be doing tai chi … start young, do it your entire life,” Dr Eckstrom said.

Residents practice tai chi along the Grand Canal in Gucheng County, Hengshui City, north China’s Hebei Province, June 5, 2026.

3. Protect your hearing

According to Dr Kenneth Koncilja, a geriatric medicine specialist at Cleveland Clinic, protecting your hearing from damage as you get older is crucial for healthy ageing.

“A lot of people wish they would have had some hearing protection when they were younger to reduce hearing loss when they’re older,” Dr Koncilja said.

Hearing loss also impacts socialisation as people age. “People with better hearing later in life socialise more,” Dr Koncilja added.

There are also cognitive benefits that happen when you protect your hearing. “It’s a modifiable risk factor for dementia – so, something you can do, preventing hearing loss and treating hearing loss and addressing hearing loss, can actually reduce your risk of dementia, which is a big deal,” Dr Koncilja said.

4. Address vision loss

According to Dr Koncilja, it’s also crucial to address any vision loss. “If you can’t really see, you don’t walk as much. If you don’t walk as much, you’re not as active,” Dr Nace said. And, again, staying active is crucial for healthy ageing.

You don’t read as much or go out as much if you can’t see well, either, which makes isolation more common, he said. This is an important way to lower your dementia risk, added Dr Nace.

5. Follow a nutritious diet

What you eat is important all throughout your lifespan, and the best diet to follow is the Mediterranean diet, according to Dr Eckstrom. This is a meal plan that’s high in fruit, veggies, nuts, seeds, whole grains, beans, plant-based proteins and fish.

“There are lots of other fad diets out there, but if you 100% follow the Mediterranean diet for your lifetime, there’s pretty good evidence that you can probably reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s dementia by at least 50% just from diet alone,” she said.

Healthy aging isn’t totally in your control, but there are specific lifestyle habits that can help you live a long and healthy life.

Healthy aging isn’t totally in your control, but there are specific lifestyle habits that can help you live a long and healthy life.

6. Don’t use tobacco products

“Don’t smoke. Don’t vape. No cigars. None of it is better than any of the rest of it,” Dr Nace stressed, noting that these behaviours add up and have a detrimental effect on your health.

Tobacco products are linked to cancer, and smoking is particularly linked to lung cancer.

“I think one of the things most people don’t realise … there’s also stroke, heart disease and peripheral vascular disease, and one of the things that’s very clear is that vascular disease is related to the onset of dementia,” Dr Nace said.

“If you want to age, don’t smoke. And if you want to age well, don’t smoke. And if you are smoking, get help to quit,” Dr Koncilja added.

7. Limit your alcohol use

Excessive alcohol intake is also bad for ageing. “There’s a lot of arguments back and forth as to what a healthy alcohol intake is,” Dr Nace said, but making sure you limit your alcohol use is important for healthy ageing.

According to the World Health Organisation, “there is no form of alcohol consumption that is risk-free. Even low levels of alcohol consumption carry some risks and can cause harm.”

“The newest evidence reports that we should only be having two alcoholic drinks per week,” Dr Eckstrom said. “It markedly increases your risk of dementia. So, if you drink six drinks per week instead of two drinks per week, your risk of dementia goes up by 16%.”

And the more you drink, the more your dementia risk increases.

“It’s also carcinogenic, and if you drink more than two drinks per week, it increases your risk for cancer,” she noted. It also causes heart disease, liver disease, high blood pressure and many other illnesses.

8. Stay active when you retire

“Don’t retire and just sit. That’s the worst thing in the world,” said Dr Nace.

Staying active when you retire – cognitively, physically and socially – is key, the expert noted.

Your cognition suffers when you’re isolated and not challenging yourself in your day-to-day life. Keeping your mind active is one way to reduce your risk of dementia.

“Staying active, it gives you meaning in your life [and] that has benefits cognitively,” Dr Nace said. “The brain is still resilient and still can learn, and physically I think that also becomes important.”

During retirement, give yourself something to look forward to, whether that is babysitting grandkids, volunteering at a local food pantry, helping out at church or joining a book club with your neighbours.

“So often, I see people who just kind of withdraw, and that’s a recipe for disaster,” Dr Nace said.

Arsenal dealt Kenan Yildiz blow as transfer hopes ended – ‘They can offer whatever’

Published

Daily Mirror

Arsenal remain in the market for a new forward but, after missing out on Vinicius Jnr, Juventus have made it clear that they will not sell Kenan Yildiz

Juventus boss Luciano Spalletti insists Arsenal “can offer whatever they like” but the Italians will not be selling Kenan Yildiz.

The north Londoners failed with an initial enquiry for Yildiz earlier this summer and the Old Lady have now made it clear they’re not prepared to entertain the forward’s sale.

Juventus are ultimately in no hurry to sell and have the 21-year-old tied down on a contract until 2030, which he signed back in February. Yildiz scored 11 times in 47 outings last term and his displays saw him named the Serie A Rising Star of the Season.

Yildiz has continued to blossom since heading to Juventus as a free agent from the Bayern academy in 2022 and Spalletti is now adamant that, regardless of what figure is produce, the club will not sell their young star.

He said: “I am perfectly relaxed, because dealing with Yildiz is easy for me. They can offer whatever they like, I want Yildiz here and will always put him on the field. He’s a perfect lad to talk to, he’s mature, and knows he doesn’t need to rush anything.

“His future is already important staying at Juventus, not because there are other clubs who want to spend €100m for him. We are all convinced that we can show the total potential of Kenan, and he is a potential phenomenon of football. The fans are convinced too.”

Arsenal have looked to add another forward this summer despite already bringing in Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge, with the Greek winger impressing in the side’s win over Coventry.

Vinicius Junior was targeted earlier this summer as his Real Madrid future remains uncertain. Any move would’ve been the biggest in the Gunners history but the Brazilian instead chose to remain at the Bernabeu, penning a new deal. Since that door was closed Arsenal have been linked with the Juventus star.

Lando Norris claims Dutch GP pole ahead of Mercedes duo

Lando Norris claims Dutch GP pole ahead of Mercedes duo

Welcome to our live coverage for the sprint race for the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix, the first race after F1’s summer break. Kimi Antonelli has had a tremendous first part of the season, leading Lewis Hamilton by 50 points and George Russell by 59 after the first 11 rounds. He has taken six wins to Russell’s two, with Hamilton, Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc all racking up a win apiece.

His start to the second part of the season was not the best, however. A messy sprint qualifying session meant he ended down in fifth, more than 0.2sec behind team-mate Russell, who took a much-needed pole.

Some of the damage was self-inflicted, quite literally. In the first session of sprint qualifying he ran wide at the banked turn 12 and into the gravel. The damage to the floor of his car was attempted to be repaired for the rest of the session but left him lacking downforce. A gap of 0.2sec is not enormous but the other issue was that three other cars – Norris, Leclerc and Piastri – are between him and Russell.

That said, it is not a great worry at this point. The points available in the sprint are relatively small and Antonelli has a healthy margin at this point over his rivals. In any case, there is no guarantee that Russell and Antonelli finish where they will start. Antonelli has shown on numerous occasions that he can bounce back from a difficult session and you have to expect that again here.

The race, which starts at 11am BST, is one-third of the race distance and should be run in dry conditions. There have been persistent showers and a steady breeze at Zandvoort this weekend, but it is not expected to affect the running in the sprint.

Qualifying for tomorrow’s grand prix comes later today at 3pm, which could be a more consequential session.

However, familiar issues persist as Roberto De Zerbi begins his first full campaign in charge, with a number of key players absent today.

‘It was my only hope to survive’ – Def Leppard’s Belfast rocker on cancer battle

The guitarist revealed a stem cell transplant ‘failed to stick’ after it was carried out in January of last year

Def Leppard star Vivian Campbell has revealed his cancer has returned after a donor transplant failed to work, previously saying it was his “only hope to survive”.

The Belfast-born guitarist, 62, first went public with his Hodgkin’s lymphoma diagnosis in 2013 while part-way through an intensive six-month chemotherapy programme.

Campbell had celebrated being in remission last year following a gruelling 12-year fight against the disease, which included stem cell treatment, immunotherapy and a donor transplant. But the musician has now disclosed that the cancer has come back and that he is once again undergoing chemotherapy, The Mirror reports.

“There’s only been one time that I felt it was gonna kill me. In the winter of 2023, I got really scared about what was happening and the pace at which it was happening,” he told El Salvadorian radio station YSKL, adding, “And I realised at that point that I had to do a donor transplant. It was my only hope to survive.”

He also revealed the stem cell transplant ‘failed to stick’ after it was carried out in January of last year. “So the cancer has returned, and I’m continuing treatments to manage it”, he explained.

The seasoned guitarist, who began his lengthy career with rock band Sweet Savage in the 1970s before joining heavy metal pioneers Dio in the early ’80s, says music has helped him stay positive through the darkest moments.

“I do think that that’s what helped me, even when I was at a really low ebb with cancer treatment,” he said. “The fact that I could still continue to work, that gives me something to live for.

“Something that you enjoy, that you’re passionate about, that you can wake up in the morning and look forward to. I think that deflects, that takes away from focusing too much on cancer.”

Campbell has previously told fans he is not afraid of death, deciding to “just live his life” after being diagnosed more than a decade ago. While appearing on the Fueled with Chris Cyr podcast last September, he said: “It made me spend more money because, as Jerry Seinfeld said, ‘you can’t drive money.’

“So as soon as I got…not as soon as, but within a year of having my cancer diagnosis…I went and bought a very expensive Porsche.”

On the same episode, Campbell recalled thinking that it was “a lot of money” but said that he also thought he “could be dead next week” at the time.

“Well, actually, there is a saying in Ireland – ‘you’re a long time dead’. So, I sort of take it to heart. I’m a little bit reckless in that way,” he continued.

“[I] have a lot of faith in the universe, that things will work out.” Speaking about his cancer, he said: “I thought ‘okay, this is the hand I’ve been dealt’. As I see it, you can go one of two routes – you can capitulate to it or you can just live your life. And I decided to do the latter.

“Mentally, I’m not afraid to die. I don’t wanna die because I’ve got kids and family. I’ve got a lot of people who depend on me, but I’ve never been afraid of it and I just keep pushing at it and keep putting back. And most importantly, I just keep living my life, y’know.”

Last year, in June, Campbell revealed he was “completely in remission” for the first time in more than ten years after going “through the mill” with treatments including chemotherapy and immunotherapy.

He explained: “The cancer kept coming back, and then a couple of years ago, it really got bad. So it was the first time in having to deal with it that I was seriously concerned about it. And the doctors told me really my only chance for a cure was to do a donor transplant, and that’s exactly what I did.”

Campbell joined Def Leppard in 1992 after original guitarist Steve Clarke died of an overdose. The guitarist has also worked with British rock royalty Whitesnake and legendary American singer-songwriter Lou Gramm.
