President Donald Trump got the first major political scalps of his second term on Tuesday when five state legislators in Indiana who resisted his push to redraw the state’s congressional map lost their primaries.
It’s the latest example of Trump exacting revenge on Republicans whom he sees as crossing him. He’s already pushed Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) out of Washington and into retirement. Many of the Republicans who voted to impeach or convict him either lost their primaries or preemptively retired to save the embarrassment.
And May represents the perfect opportunity to make two Republicans who criticized Trump in the past pay.

The first comes in Louisiana. Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) always faced an uphill battle after he voted to convict Trump for the president’s actions on January 6. But Cassidy had just been re-elected in 2020, meaning he was on borrowed time.
Now the bill comes due. Trump made Cassidy, a gastroentrologist, bend the knee when he nominated Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an anti-vaccine conspiracy theorist who had spent years promoting lies about public health, to lead the Department of Health and Human Services. Cassidy relented and voted to confirm Kennedy, spending much of his time since trying to avoid questions about Kennedy.
That did not work. Instead, Trump endorsed Rep. Julia Letlow (R-La.) in the Louisiana primary. In addition, Cassidy faces former Rep. John Fleming in the primary.
To boot, Louisiana also changed its law. Previously, Louisiana had an open “jungle primary,” wherein the top two vote-getters advanced into a runoff regardless of party affiliation.

On May 16, each party has a primary and then the top two vote earners advance to a June 27 runoff if neither candidate wins a majority.
This puts Cassidy at a structural disadvantage. A former Democrat, he can no longer rely on crossover voters who might admire him for standing up to Trump or his work with Joe Biden on the bipartisan infrastructure bill. Even then, he probably lost plenty of goodwill by saddling up to Trump as much as he has.
The second state where Trump seems more than get his pound of flesh comes in Louisiana’s neighbor Texas. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) is not as Trump-critical as Cassidy.
A University of Houston Hobby School of Public Affairs poll showed that Paxton narrowly beats Cornyn 48 percent to 45 percent with only seven percent of respondents saying they are unsure. That’s a stunning number for a four-term incumbent senator, former attorney general and former Texas Supreme Court justice like Cornyn. But it’s a sign of where the party has moved in Texas.

Moreover, Trump has withheld his endorsement of Cornyn, despite the fact Trump knows that Paxton opens the door for James Talarico, the telegenic baby-faced Bible-quoting seminarian Democrats chose as their nominee, winning the seat in the Lone Star State. Trump’s brain might know Cornyn is the right choice. But his heart is with Paxton.
Lastly, there’s Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky. Massie has been the biggest thorn in Trump’s side in the lower chamber. He led the charge to release files related to Jeffrey Epstein, voted against the One Big, Beautiful Bill last summer and opposed making Mike Johnson speaker. Trump has endorsed former Navy SEAL Ed Gallrein in the race.

But so far, it looks like Massie pull it off. Plenty of voters in the district like the fact he is idiosyncratic like his fellow Kentuckian Sen. Rand Paul.
And cutting loose Republicans and cleavng them could have unintended consequences.
Trump excommunicating Tillis to be an own-goal since former Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper leads Trump-endorsed former Republican National Committee chairman Michael Whatley. And Tillis helped push out Kristi Noem as Homeland Security Secretary and forced the Department of Justice to–at least temporarily–back off of its probe into Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell.
Trump has shown a stunning level of party discipline. And he’s a transformational figure in the Republican Party. But doing so will have consequences that will reverberate long after he leaves.
A British man evacuated from the Norwegian Viva cruise ship has broken his silence, sharing an update on his health after being exposed to hantavirus — the rat virus that has gripped the vessel

A British man who was evacuated from the hantavirus-stricken cruise broke his silence on Wednesday.
Martin Anstee, who was evacuated from the MV Hondius, has told Sky News he was “doing okay” but doesn’t know how long he’ll be in hospital.

The 56-year-old told Sky News: “I’m doing okay. I’m not feeling too bad. There are still lots of tests to be done.
“I have no idea how long I’ll be in the hospital for. I’m in isolation at the moment.”
Mr Anstee worked as an expedition guide on board the Dutch-flagged ship. He was evacuated by medical flight this morning, along with two others.
Two other people who returned independently to the UK from the cruise ship have also been told to self-isolate, the UK Health Security Agency said, adding that “the risk to general public remains very low”.

The World Health Organisation has said the number of confirmed hantavirus cases has now risen to five.
The results, which have been confirmed by lab tests, include two passengers who were evacuated today.
There were previously three confirmed cases and five more suspected, with three people having died.
The overall number of cases, eight, is not thought to have changed, with lab tests confirming the presence of the hantavirus in previously suspected cases.

However, Spanish health minister Monica Garcia has confirmed that all the passengers currently on the MV Hondius are asymptomatic.
The ship will now continue to the Canary Islands where passengers will be checked for signs of infection before being repatriated if they are deemed healthy.
In an update posted online, Spanish health authorities said that the ship is expected to arrive within 72 to 96 hours.
Officials said that passengers will be disembarked in a “controlled” way with “direct transfer from the port to the airport and subsequent return to their countries of origin, avoiding at all times transit through spaces open to the general population”.
PSG now await in the showpiece fixture of Europe’s elite club competition later this month after the holders squeezed past Bayern Munich in Germany 24 hours later.
Last week, the highest-scoring European Cup semi-final since 1959/60 saw Bayern take an early advantage through Kane’s penalty, only for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Joao Neves and Michael Olise all to score excellent goals before another spot-kick from Dembele had the hosts in front at the interval.
Kvaratskhelia and Dembele both netted again to put PSG in control, only for Dayot Upamecano and Luis Diaz to then bring Bayern back within a goal ahead of a hotly anticipated return fixture at the Allianz Arena in which the goals didn’t fly but remained fascinating fare nonetheless.

The game will be held at the 67,215-capacity Puskas Arena in Budapest, Hungary.

The actress, also known for her 1980s home workout videos, wrote: “He needed me. No one had ever let me know they needed me, and this wasn’t your average human being that needed me, this was the creator of CNN, and Turner Classic Movies, who had won the America’s Cup as the world’s greatest sailor.
Posting on Instagram, he said: “Heartbroken to share that Joan, my wife and partner for 50 years, has passed away. She was the most wonderful mum and grandmum our kids and grandkids could have ever wished for. She was my best friend, my rock, my guiding light, my world. Love you forever, Joan x”

Steven Gerrard has outlined the blueprint Arsenal must follow to beat PSG in the Champions League final.
PSG’s Champions League defence continued with a thrilling semi-final victory over Bayern Munich, with Luis Enrique’s side winning 6-5 on aggregate.
The French champions won the first leg 5-4 in Paris before holding German champions Bayern to a 1-1 draw at the Allianz Arena.
Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele put PSG further ahead in the tie with a 3rd-minute goal and Harry Kane’s late strike prove to be just a consolation.
Gerrard, who won the Champions League with Liverpool in 2005, says Arsenal will be ‘underdogs’ going into the final but insists the Premier League leaders ‘certainly have a chance’.
Asked to rate Arsenal’s chances of causing an upset in the Budapest final on May 30, Gerrard said on TNT Sports: ‘I know more than anyone that an underdog can win this final. It was a mismatch when we played AC Milan but anything can happen.

‘Arsenal are paying against a high-quality team with an elite manager so Arsenal will have to be the best versions of themselves.
‘Every single player will have to turn up but of course they’ve got a chance. Being the underdogs might even suit this Arsenal team.

‘If they can win the Premier League that will give them immense confidence and belief going into the final as well.

‘They’ve certainly got a chance. I think they need to use their physicality, their size, make every set-piece count and take PSG to places they don’t want to go and make it uncomfortable for them.’
Discussing PSG’s semi-final win over Bayern Munich, Gerrard added: ‘Over the two legs they deserved to go through.
‘The first leg was a shootout but they got their heads in front and tonight was a defensive masterclass.

‘Bayern and Kompany played their part in the tie but the best team have gone through. PSG just had the edge over them.’
Gerrard’s former England teammate Owen Hargreaves also gave Arsenal hope of overcoming PSG in a mouth-watering Champions League final.

‘Arsenal have a chance, without a doubt,’ he said. ‘With that defence, the goalkeeper, Declan Rice deeper in midfield…
‘They can definitely do it in a one-off game. But this PSG team? They’ve got so many ways to hurt you.
‘It will be fascinating but this is a different Arsenal now. They believe again after they went through that blip. They have a chance.’
Mikel Arteta’s side are on course to become Premier League champions before the European final, currently sitting five points clear of second-placed Manchester City.

Adapted from a German comedy, the show centres on Greg as Paul ‘Wicky’ Wickstead, a crime scene cleaner who encounters diverse individuals through his distinctive profession.

Featuring guest appearances from the likes of Helena Bonham Carter, David Mitchell, Ruth Madeley, and Layton Williams, it depicts Wicky navigating peculiar scenarios while removing all traces of death from crime scenes.
The BBC synopsis reveals: “After CSI have done their stuff, the cleaner mops up the grisly remains. For Wicky, a bloodbath and the pub is all in a day’s work,” reports the Mirror.
Almost two years following the third series’ conclusion in October 2024, Greg has now suggested further instalments are on the horizon.

During Wednesday’s appearance on The One Show, the Taskmaster presenter revealed: “I’ve been told I’m not allowed to say much, but all I can tell you is, it’s not over. The Cleaner is not finished, we’re working on something.”
He continued: “I’ll be writing, yes, but I am not allowed to tell you what form it’s in. Something is happening, I’m writing it. I’m chuffed that Wicky is coming back.”
This follows fans praising The Cleaner as the “perfect British comedy”, with one viewer commenting: “One of the best shows in recent years.”
Another remarked: “Haven’t laughed so much in a long time. Just happened upon this little gem. Was in stitches within minutes….brilliant!” One viewer commented: “Blasted through all episodes, and this was a little gem to find,” while another declared: “Hooked already.”
A further fan remarked: “The Cleaner is unexpectedly quirky and original. I have never seen anything like it. I laughed so hard that I had to pause the show to collect myself as I was losing the dialogue. Greg Davies is a comic genius.”
“Easily bingeable,” another viewer noted, with someone else stating: “Every episode a gem. Just one of the best TV series this year.”
Greg has previously discussed what he believes draws audiences to The Cleaner and his character Wicky, explaining to the BBC: “Well, it’s not for me to presume they did but what I like about the character is that in many ways he is quite innocent, almost childlike. He has settled into a very straightforward personal life but does a job that is constantly challenging that.
“He is forced to consider things about life that, left to his own devices he’s probably ‘brushed under the carpet’. Rarely does Wicky leave a crime scene without having learned something.”
He continued: “I love that each week is a new adventure for him. He is challenged by eccentric characters with colourful lives.
“It’s really nice to work intensely with a small cast week on week and it may seem petty but I like that, regardless of the guest actors illustrious careers, I’m always the tallest person on camera.”
