‘What, a new one? They keep changing every 5 minutes’: Care home resident speaks for Britain after meeting Burnham and being surprised to learn he is yet another new Prime Minister

One care home resident summed up the turbulent nature of British politics as they expressed surprise at Andy Burnham introducing himself as the Prime Minister

One care home resident today summed up the turbulent nature of British politics as they expressed surprise at Andy Burnham introducing himself as the Prime Minister.

‘What, a new one? They keep changing every 5 minutes,’ he responded to Mr Burnham, after initially mistaking the Labour leader for a local candidate.

The interaction took place during Mr Burnham’s visit to a care home managed by Jewish Care in Golders Green, north London, on Wednesday.

It echoes the now famous exclamation of Brenda from Bristol on being told a snap general election had been called in April 2017. ‘You’re joking – not another one!’, she said in a TV clip that swiftly went viral on social media.

Mr Burnham’s visit to the north London care home came as he set out his plans to reform the social care system, with the view to creating a ‘national care service’.

When introduced to one resident, the PM was asked: ‘And you are the local candidate are you?’. Mr Burnham replied: ‘I was a local candidate, I had a by-election a few weeks ago. I’m now the Prime Minister.’

The care home resident responded: ‘What, a new one? They keep changing every five minutes.’ ‘I know, I know, I know,’ a laughing Mr Burnham said in agreement.

Mr Burnham is Britain’s seventh PM in a decade after the ousting of Keir Starmer.

As he answered questions from reporters following a speech on his social care plans on Wednesday, Mr Burnham reiterated that he would not be calling a snap general election himself.

This is despite him having previously demanded the Tories do exactly that when they changed leaders while in power.

Mr Burnham said that social care reform needed to be addressed before the country next goes to the polls, as he announced he is accelerating Louise Casey’s review of social care so it will report next year.

He said: ‘If I look back to that experience that I had as health secretary in the 2005 to 2010 Parliament, we probably left the reform too late in that Parliament, and it got too close to a general election.

‘Learning from that, that’s one of the reasons why I’m bringing forward Louise’s review, because I think it’s better to do it sooner and further away from an election, and that answers another story for the media, doesn’t it?

‘That there’s no election on the horizon. I think it’s best to deal with it early and to listen.’

Mr Burnham also signalled tax rises are to come as he warned of ‘difficult decisions’ on social care funding.

The build-up to the PM’s speech had been dominated by questions over whether he would seek to impose an £18billion ‘death tax’ to pay for his plans, through a shake-up of inheritance levies.

It has also been reported that officials have drawn up alternative plans for a new tax on income to fund social care.

Asked about the prospect of tax rises, Mr Burnham insisted more could be done initially from within existing budgets – although he warned of ‘difficult decisions’ later on.

‘I think more is possible from within existing resources, and the things that I’ve talked about today, particularly around the workforce, will be fully funded,’ the PM said, when asked after his speech if he could transform social care without raising taxes.

‘So I think, firstly, you have to do more with what you’ve got. But I think Louise (Casey) indicated some of what we would want to do in the fullest sense will require difficult, difficult decisions.

‘But we will be honest with people about those. We will put them before the country at the right time, and we will hopefully proceed with people’s consent.’

Mr Burnham’s remarks appeared to be an attempt to punt questions about tax rises to fund social care reforms until nearer the next general election, which he insisted is not ‘on the horizon’.

He insisted he would stick to Labour’s existing manifesto commitments on not hiking income tax, National Insurance or VAT in this Parliament.

The PM also suggested that savings from the NHS from resolving the social care crisis could help fund a reformed system.

He said it costs the NHS around £2.5billion a year to have people kept in hospital even though they are medically fit to leave because there is no suitable care available in the community.

He also warned the lack of a ‘preventative front-end social care service’ stopping people from going into hospital in the first place was costing the NHS ‘several billion pounds a year’.

‘I think we owe it to the public before we talk about tax rises’ to ‘do more with what you’ve got’, the PM added.

In an ‘ideal world’ nobody would have to sell their home to pay for their care, Mr Burnham said.

‘I think it’s a really awful process for those who live through it, the whole thing of children taking power of attorney, and then dealing with parents’ finances,’ he added.

‘I think the whole thing is horrendous for those who live though it, and they see everything that their parents have worked for just whittled away in front of them, paying for care that often isn’t good enough care in terms of what you would want for your mum and dad.

‘I think the system isn’t right, and in an ideal world, no I wouldn’t want to see that.’

‘Flash drought’ declared in half of England as heatwaves result in driest July on record

Published

on

Daily Mirror

Multiple UK regions have officially been declared in drought as farmers warn crop damage could trigger higher supermarket prices and even shortages of baking potatoes

Almost half of England has officially been plunged into drought after a succession of sweltering heatwaves has resulted in the driest July on record..

The Environment Agency has declared drought across seven regions spawning central, eastern and southern England, warning the country is now using water faster than nature can replace it.

Farmers say the prolonged dry spell is already damaging crops, forcing supermarkets to push up prices and could even lead to shortages of some vegetables, including baking potatoes.

The areas now officially in drought are East Anglia, Hertfordshire and the entirety of London, the Thames Valley, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, Devon and Cornwall, the West Midlands, and Wessex, which covers Dorset, Somerset, Wiltshire, and Gloucestershire.

England has received just 7% of its average July rainfall, while southern England has seen only 1% of what would normally be expected.

The Environment Agency said the combination of a dry spring, a hot summer and repeated heatwaves has triggered a “flash” drought, despite reservoirs and groundwater being replenished by a wet winter.

The announcement comes as parts of the UK endure a fourth heatwave of the summer, with temperatures climbing into the 30s.

Three earlier wildfires have already fuelled wildfires, damaged rivers and wildlife, hit agriculture and prompted hosepipe bans affecting millions of people.

Many farmers say the impact is already severe. Paul Francis, of Long Farms in Suffolk, said the lack of rainfall had significantly reduced yields of rapeseed, potatoes, onions and carrots, with vegetables also expected to be smaller than usual.

“You feel helpless,” he said. “England is usually good for enough rain for crops and we work hard to grow them but the weather can spoil it.”

He warned there could be shortages of baking potatoes and onions this year, adding that supermarkets should increase prices to better support farmers facing mounting losses.

National Farmers Union deputy president Paul Tomkins said: “Farmers and growers have always had to contend with the weather, but what they are experiencing now is climate change in action.

“Across every sector and every part of the country, farmers and growers are seeing first-hand the impact of dry weather and drought, with more extreme conditions making it harder, riskier and more costly to produce the nation’s food.”

The NFU is urging ministers to make it easier for farmers to build reservoirs and store water by simplifying planning rules and introducing more flexible water abstraction licences.

Water minister Emma Hardy said: “Our climate is changing, droughts are becoming increasingly common, and we need to be prepared for this new normal.

“We’re delivering long-term change in the water industry and driving record investments in infrastructure, including nine new reservoirs.

“We expect water companies to follow their drought plans, to go further and faster to reduce leaks, and to ensure supplies are not disrupted even in the driest of weather.”

Robert Palmer, deputy director of climate and campaign organisation Uplift, said: “For weeks we’ve watched wildfires destroy homes, crops and wildlife. Half the country is now suffering from drought. Climate breakdown is no longer a threat in the future – it’s here now.

“Yet politicians are still considering new oil and gas drilling – the very thing driving the climate crisis. Rather than listening to the fossil fuel lobby and Donald Trump, our leaders must follow the science, which shows that the world already has far more oil and gas than can ever be safely burned.

“Every new oil and gas field approved, particularly on the scale of the Rosebank oil field, will lead to more harm – more severe drought, worsening wildfires, more floods.

“Governments need to act now, not just on how we adapt to these frightening changes, but to stop them from getting worse. That means standing up to the oil and gas firms and saying no to new drilling and Rosebank.”

Forecasters say little meaningful rain is expected before next week, and even then only small amounts are forecast.

Met Office meteorologist Liam Eslick said the high-pressure system dominating the UK’s weather is likely to persist into August and the first half of September, reports the Independent.

“We want a good soaking, a good long period of rain to come, but in the forecast at the moment, especially over the next few days, there’s not actually a lot going on for England,” he said.

“The only time we may see a little bit more in the way of extensive rain is possibly on Sunday evening into Monday. There may be some heavier bursts, but it’s not going to be long-lived. It’s not going to provide anything substantial for England.”

Thursday Racing Tips: Best Bets & Odds Glorious Goodwood Day Three

Thursday Racing Tips: Best Bets & Odds Glorious Goodwood Day Three
  • Ciarrai Abu (Goodwood, 13.50) – 1pt each-way @ 5/1 (Bet365)
  • Enceladus (Goodwood, 15.00) – 1pt win @ 5/2 (William Hill)
  • Miss Yechance (Goodwood, 16.10) – 1pt each-way @ 17/2 (Bet365)
  • Mia Fantasia (Goodwood, 16.45) – 1pt each-way @ 8/1 (Unibet)

It’s day three at Glorious Goodwood, which makes the Group 1 Nassau Stakes the day’s feature. We have four selections for you using the best odds from betting sites.

Before you place your day three bet check out the best Goodwood betting offers to claim free bets, bet boosts and more.

Coral Kincsem Heritage Handicap (13.50, Goodwood)

Let’s start at the very beginning and take a look at this top class handicap that carries £120,000 in prize money.

As you’d expect for a three-year-old race like this, there are plenty of unexposed runners, including Decade Of Time, Dark Whisper and Savvy Disko, while you certainly couldn’t rule out other potential improvers on the day.

However, I do like the look of CIARRAI ABU, who is really beginning to shape up this season. He resumed with a win here (1m, good) in maiden company in May, returned an improved effort on his handicap debut when back here next time, finishing a close fourth and made ground in eyecatching fashion, despite hanging, when scoring at Ascot (1m, good to firm) last time.

There may still be more to come over 1m but connections are pressing the button on a step up in trip and I think that the way he came home at a stiffer track like Ascot, plus the obvious stamina in his pedigree, he’ll possibly find even more now tried over this far and it’s worth a value shout on horse racing betting sites.

Goodwood day three racing tip 1: Ciarrai Abu (Goodwood, 13.50) – 1pt each-way @ 5/1 (Bet365)

You’ll recall that I was sweet on the chances of ENCELADUS at Royal Ascot and Joseph O’Brien’s colt did not disappoint. I was standing down near the three furlong pole that day so got a great close up as they turned for him and he was beginning to make his move under Ryan Moore.

He’d shown a really likeable attitude when scoring on his reappearance at Cork (1m2½f, good to yielding) in April and he did the job well when we sided with him last month (1m4f, good to firm).

He’s a Sea The Stars colt and one who looks to have a fair bit more to come, so this step up in grade looks very interesting. I’m a big fan of the J P O’Brien-Dylan Browne McGonagle combination and, having decided to go up in grade with him, I’d be very surprised if the trainer has made a rick.

True, there are several others with claims and who, on paper, may have slightly stronger form but they may not be improving at as fast a rate as my selection and I am happy to side with him again.

Goodwood day three racing tip 2: Enceladus (Goodwood, 15.00) – 1pt win @ 5/2 (William Hill)

Buccellati Handicap (16.10, Goodwood)

A very competitive contest where recent history strongly suggests that a single figure draw is beneficial, with only one of the last ten successful horses coming from a higher draw than that.

That is not positive for the otherwise very solid Shes Got A Brother, who represents Mick and David Easterby. Draw aside, she’s got a good chance again and has some good form to bring back into this sphere, albeit after a 5lb rise.

Schrodinger’s Cat, Naana’s Shadow and Noble Vow are all much respected in siding with MISS YECHANCE. She won a Catterick novice event last year and has added a Meydan handicap since. She was far from disgraced at Royal Ascot last time out, when she also raced without one of her shoes, so there are reasons to believe that she could do better.

Added to that is that she’s been in the care of Karl Burke for just that one most recent start and he’s now had time to get to know her better and eke out some more. She looks a big each-way player on betting apps from stall six and may improve enough to win.

Goodwood day three racing tip 3: Miss Yechance (Goodwood, 16.10) – 1pt each-way @ 17/2 (Bet365)

Whispering Angel Nursery Handicap (Class 2) (15.45, Goodwood)

A competitive nursery sees 18 go to post, Shadow King heading the market under a penalty after scoring on his debut in this sphere at Doncaster last time. Wise And Wonderful represents Andrew Balding and has been showing improvement for each start, also winning last time out in an Epsom maiden.

You’d think there’d be more to come from her while The Bookkeeper has Ryan Moore up and he’s been the subject of numerous tips going into the race after finishing a decent fourth in the Woodcote at Epsom’s Derby meeting.

The Ginger Kid has a good pitch in stall three and enters calculations along with Cicilian and MIA FANTASIA. Oisin Murphy rides the selection for Hugo Palmer and although the pair don’t combine on a major basis, their union can quite often prove to be a fruitful one.

This colt makes his nursery debut after scoring on debut at Carlisle (7f, good to firm) and also running a good race to be third at Ascot last time, in a race won by Dr Rascal, who won the Vintage Stakes here on Tuesday. I think an initial mark of 79 looks more than fair.

His draw is perhaps the one serious cause for concern, as it won’t be easy from stall 13 but they’re having a go and if anyone can get him off to a good start it’s this pilot. I think the draw is factored into his double figure price and he looks worth an each-way play.

Goodwood day three racing tip 4: Mia Fantasia (Goodwood, 16.45) – 1pt each-way @ 8/1 (Unibet)

eBay pays $55m to journalist couple hounded by execs in vilest way for publishing blogs critical of web auction giant

Published

David and Ina Steiner are set to receive nearly $50 million from eBay and its former executives after the company settled a lawsuit filed by the couple

E-commerce giant eBay has agreed to pay a journalist couple nearly $50 million after the company’s former executives relentlessly harassed them.

On Tuesday, eBay settled a lawsuit brought against the company by David and Ina Steiner, who had produced an online newsletter called Ecommerce Bytes that upset the company’s former CEO and other top officials with its coverage.

The couple will receive $46.15 million from eBay, $2 million directly from former CEO Devin Wenig and $550,000 from two other former top executives, for a total of $48.7 million.

Wenig and eBay have also agreed to pay a combined $7 million to charitable causes as part of the settlement. The total fine therefore amounts to $55.7 million.

The Steiners’ attorneys said the settled lawsuit came in response to ‘the company’s widely publicized 2019 cyberstalking and harassment campaign designed to stop their reporting.’

In early 2024, eBay was ordered to pay a separate $3 million fine after it was federally prosecuted for the harassment campaign.

In that case, prosecutors proved that over the course of several months, top-level eBay management discussed how to ‘take down’ the Steiners and resolved to put the couple through ‘pure hell.’

They sent them anonymous, threatening messages, and ordered disturbing deliveries to the couple’s Natick, Massachusetts, home – including a box of live cockroaches, a funeral wreath, a preserved fetal pig and a bloody pig mask. They also spied on them.

Massachusetts US Attorney Josh Levy told the Associated Press in 2024: ‘eBay engaged in absolutely horrific, criminal conduct.

‘The company’s employees and contractors involved in this campaign put the victims through pure hell, in a petrifying campaign aimed at silencing their reporting and protecting the eBay brand.’

The campaign of harassment started in August 2019, after the Steiners shared an article about litigation against eBay and then-CEO Devin Wenig sent a message saying it was time to ‘take down’ the couple.

Wenig sent a message to a fellow executive saying: ‘If you are ever going to take her down … now is the time.’

The executive then forwarded Wenig’s message to James Baugh, who was eBay’s senior director of safety and security, and called Ina Steiner a ‘biased troll who needs to get BURNED DOWN.’

Baugh was among seven former employees who ultimately pleaded guilty to charges in the case. Wenig was never criminally charged and faced little consequence until the recent civil case was settled.

Baugh was sentenced in 2022 to almost five years in prison. Another former executive, David Harville, was sentenced to two years.

Throughout the campaign, the couple received a package delivered to their front door that contained a mask of a bloody pig’s head, which was followed by the delivery of a funeral wreath.

The packages continued to arrive over several weeks. Fly larvae, spiders, roaches and a self-help book about coping with the loss of a spouse were also delivered to the couple.

After the bloody pig mask was delivered, Ina received a message on Twitter saying: ‘DO I HAVE UR ATTENTION NOW????,’ court documents show.

According to federal prosecutors, the defendants had pornography addressed to the victims sent to their next-door neighbors’ house, and took out an ad on Craigslist inviting ‘singles, couples and swingers’ to come over to the newsletter publisher’s home to party each night.

Meanwhile, Ina Steiner continued to receive harassing and threatening messages on Twitter and strange emails from groups she had never interacted with.

She was contacted by the irritable bowel syndrome patient support group and the Communist Party of the United States.

The Steiners also noticed strange cars following them around their small town of Natick. They reported the incidents to police, who initially brushed them off as elaborate pranks.

However, after the Steiners photographed one of the suspicious vehicles tailing them, the police were able to track the license plate back to a rental car booked under the name of Veronica Zea, who was staying at the Boston Ritz-Carlton hotel, along with a man named David Harville.

As they continued to investigate, police later found that both Zea and Harville worked for eBay, based more than 3,000 miles away in San Jose, California.

The police department’s discovery prompted a criminal investigation into the harassment campaign ordered by some within eBay’s executive ranks.

Once the police connected the activity back to eBay, the individuals involved are said to have attempted to cover their tracks.

The defendants allegedly sought to interfere with the investigation by lying to the police about eBay’s involvement while pretending to offer the company’s assistance with the harassment, as well as by lying to eBay’s lawyers about their involvement.

As part of Tuesday’s civil settlement, eBay released a statement apologizing to the Steiners and condemning the actions of its former executives.

‘As we have long stated, what the Steiners were subjected to by former eBay employees in 2019 was wrong, reprehensible and should never have happened,’ the statement began.

‘We condemn, in the strongest terms possible, the employees who perpetrated and pled guilty to criminal charges for the misconduct against Ina and David Steiner… We continue to extend our deepest apologies to the Steiners,’ it continued.

‘The 2019 conduct is not representative of eBay’s culture or thousands of employees around the world today. Since these events occurred, new leaders have joined the company and eBay has strengthened its policies, procedures, controls and training consistent with the company’s ongoing commitment to uphold high standards of conduct and ethics,’ the statement concluded.

The Devil Wears Prada 2: When And Where To Stream In The UK

Critics broadly enjoyed The Devil Wears Prada 2, calling the Anne Hathaway, Stanley Tucci, Emily Blunt, and Meryl Streep-led sequel “shimmering”.

And with a very decent 84% Popcornmeter score (that’s the audience rating on review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes), it looks like viewers loved it, too.

Still, who can keep up with every great movie and TV show coming out these days?

If you missed its cinematic release, let the cerulean seas around you give way to the comfy shores of your own sofa because Disney is making the movie available to stream on Disney+ as of 29 July.

And it’ll soon be available on a host of other platforms, too.

In a press release, Disney said that while the film will exclusively appear on its own streamer on Wednesday 29 July, “the film also arrives on digital June 30, including Amazon Prime Video, Sky Store and Apple TV”.

They noted that between the two movies, The Devil Wears Prada franchise has raked in over $1 billion (roughly £752 million).

The second installment alone, meanwhile, is “on its way” to passing about $676 million (£508.8 million) gross worldwide.

It’s not just the film arriving on the streaming platform, either. Disney’s release said there will be a “dazzling array of exclusive digital content, including fashion and music featurettes, audio commentary with the filmmakers, and a hysterical gag reel, featuring bloopers and outtakes”.

Well, that’s my plans sorted tonight…

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is available to stream on Disney+ from 29 July onwards, and on other sites, like Amazon Prime Video, Sky Store and Apple TV from 30 July.

FIFA charge Argentina over Falklands banner and World Cup final brawl

FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against the Argentinian Football Association after their side’s antics against England and Spain in the World Cup.

The footballing governing bodywill look at potential breaches of its code by Argentine players in the World Cup semi-finals and final.

After beating England in a dramatic semi-final, Argentine players unfurled a banner which read ‘Las Malvinas son Argentinas’, referring to their country’s claim over the Falkland Islands.

44 years ago, the South American country sought to invade and occupy the Falklands but ultimately surrendered after a 74-day war, which cost the lives of 255 British servicemen and 649 Argentinian personnel.

As well as the banner, FIFA are also investigating the Argentine FA over potential breaches relating to discrimination, racist abuse, as well as throwing of objects by fans at ‘several’ matches at the tournament.

In a statement, FIFA, said: ‘The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has opened proceedings against the Argentinian Football Association for potential breaches of article 13 paragraph 2 c) (Using a sports event for demonstrations of a non-sporting nature), article 14 paragraph 5 (Team misconduct), article 15 (Discrimination and racist abuse) and article 17 (Order and security at matches) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code in light of discriminatory chants and gestures, late kick-offs, failure to comply with match and security protocols, the display of inappropriate messages by the team and spectators and the throwing of objects by spectators in relation to several matches of the representative team of Argentina at the FIFA World Cup 2026.’

In addition, FIFA has also opened proceedings against two Argentinian players, Leandro Paredes and Nahuel Molina, and coach Roberto Ayala for assault after an ugly brawl broke out following full-time in the World Cup final.

Separately, Molina and Thiago Almada are both under investigation for unsporting behaviour, as is Spanish midfielder Gavi.

‘The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has received the report of the appointed Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor concerning incidents that occurred during the FIFA World Cup 2026 final (Spain v. Argentina),’ the statement continued.

‘Following the recommendation contained therein, it has opened disciplinary proceedings – for potential breaches of article 14 paragraph 1 i) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (assault) – against Argentinian players Nahuel Molina (two counts, one completed and one attempted) and Leandro Paredes (three counts) and Argentinian official Roberto Ayala (one count). Disciplinary proceedings have also been opened – for potential breaches of article 14 paragraph 1 b) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (unsporting behaviour) – against Argentinian players Nahuel Molina (one count) and Thiago Almada (one count) and Spanish player Pablo Martín Páez Gavira (one count).’

Argentina defender Molina appeared to strike Spain captain Rodri as he ran onto the pitch to celebrate at full-time, sparking a fight between both sides.

Boca Juniors midfielder Paredes was then seen grabbing Spain’s Eric Garcia by the throat before throwing Gavi to the ground.

And in a separate incident, assistant coach Ayala was captured punching Barcelona’s Dani Olmo in the face after a brief verbal spat.

Ayala is perhaps the only Argentinian to apologise for their part in the disgraceful post-match antics, telling Valencia Capital Radio last week: ‘Obviously I’m sorry. Because of my position, I can’t allow a feeling, or what I might receive from the other party, to change my mood and my actions. I’m sorry, but for me, these are things that stay there and that’s it.

‘For me, things need to be put behind us and left there. It was more of a push than anything else, it wasn’t a punch like they’re saying, and that’s it. It was a reaction to something he said, but that’s it. If I see him, I’ll obviously apologise to him in person.’

‘When the game ends, what I see is a fight in the middle of the pitch, and we rush to go after our players, and it ends up like that because that’s not who we are.

‘I take responsibility for what I did. My intention was to go and separate them, that was my intention, but sometimes things happen and emotions run high, but that’s no excuse. And given my position, my behaviour has to be different, regardless of what I receive.’

Blanche nomination at risk of delay as Republican demands answers

WASHINGTON (AP) — A planned vote to move forward with Todd Blanche’s nomination for attorney general appeared in doubt Wednesday as a key Republican senator demanded more assurances from the Justice Department about the settlement of President Donald Trump’s lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service.

GOP Sen. John Cornyn, a crucial swing vote, called off a scheduled Wednesday meeting with Blanche, who has been serving as acting attorney general since Pam Bondi’s firing in April. Cornyn told reporters that the Justice Department has not adequately addressed in writing his concerns about the settlement that afforded Trump and members of his family protection from tax audits.

The Senate Judiciary Committee has scheduled a vote for Thursday to advance Blanche’s nomination to the full Senate, but could be delayed if there’s no resolution. Another Republican on the committee, Thom Tillis of North Carolina, has backed Cornyn’s position, and just one Republican holdout could sink Blanche’s prospects.

“They know what they need to do but they simply refuse to do it,” Cornyn, who lost the Republican primary in May, said of the Justice Department.

At the center of the fight is the settlement of Trump’s $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS that included a deal to drop tax claims against the president and a now-scrapped plan to create a $1.776 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund” to compensate people who believe they were wronged by the Justice Department. The Justice Department said in June that it was no longer moving forward with the “Anti-Weaponization Fund” amid bipartisan outrage but officials have said the audit immunity agreement remains in place.

Some lawmakers have raised concerns that the fund could be resurrected absent a commitment in writing from the Trump administration that it is dead, especially since Trump has expressed continued support for the idea. Blanche had previously resisted requests for a formal written retraction, though he told senators at his confirmation hearing earlier this month that the administration would be willing to help craft legislation to bar the creation of the fund.

Cornyn has also demanded clarification from the Justice Department on the scope of the tax immunity deal. Blanche has said the deal covers any existing audits but does not protect the president from examination of future tax filings.

“We’re been trying to help them get to a conclusion here and they won’t let us. It’s befuddling to me,” Cornyn said.

A person familiar with the matter said the Justice Department provided Cornyn’s office with a written proposal seeking to address his concerns around the audit immunity agreement and the fund. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity to talk about sensitive discussions surrounding Blanche’s confirmation.

Four women accuse Jared Leto of criminal sexual conduct when they were teenagers

Warning: Contains graphic details of alleged sexual offences and misconduct, as well as strong language

Four women have accused Oscar-winning actor and Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto of criminal sexual conduct, with the alleged offences having taken place when they were teenagers.

One of the women says she was sexually assaulted in a motel bathroom when she was 17. Another says the Hollywood star threatened her with sexual assault when she was 19, and had been unexpectedly left alone with him in a hotel room.

A third describes how she had under-age sex with the star in California when she was 17 – which would be classified as statutory rape. Leto “shrugged off” a conversation about the age of consent being 18 in the US state, she says.

The fourth woman describes being groomed by Leto, saying he abused his celebrity status by making repeated sexually explicit phone calls to her when she was 16. On at least one occasion, she says he suggested they should have sex.

She was subsequently sent a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) to prevent her from talking about her relationship with Leto, which the BBC has seen. However, she refused to sign.

Four further women also say they received strange and often very sexual phone calls from Leto when they were younger.

Another woman says, when she was 14, he instructed a security guard to take her backstage at a music festival after having made a lewd comment about her chest during an autograph-signing. The girl’s mother confronted Leto, but he repeated the comment, it is alleged.

In total, 10 women have spoken to the BBC documentary – Jared Leto: Hollywood’s Dark Secret – with nine of them sharing their stories publicly for the first time.

All the women say they encountered Leto between 2002 and 2016, when he was in his 30s and 40s. He is now 54.

“This was 25 years ago… he has gotten away with it,” says one of his alleged victims.

The BBC has corroborated a number of the women’s accounts with friends and family who were told about the encounters with Leto at the time. In some cases, we have also seen pictures and messages that support the women’s accounts.

Two men who worked with Leto’s band for many years also told the documentary how uncomfortable staff felt about the way Leto would interact with teenage girls, sometimes inviting them backstage to his dressing room or inviting them to the house where he was recording.

“I think everyone thought the age gap was way too big,” one says.

Despite repeated attempts to contact Jared Leto before publication, he did not respond to the allegations put to him by the BBC.

In a statement to US media, issued on Wednesday afternoon UK-time, Leto said: “I have never assaulted anyone in my entire life. These claims are absolutely and categorically false.”

Sam Smith Confirms Engagement To Christian Cowan

As they gear up for the release of their fifth studio album, Sam Smith is celebrating the start of a new life chapter.

On Monday, the singer-songwriter confirmed to The New York Times that they and Christian Cowan, a fashion designer who has dressed the likes of Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez, had gotten engaged. The pair have been dating for about three years.

The news comes just weeks before the release of Smith’s new album, Hazel Eyes. In their chat with the Times, the five-time Grammy winner said the album’s title is a nod to Cowan’s eye colour, while songs like Everlasting Love and My Guy are inspired by their relationship.

Smith, who is nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns, did not divulge details of the proposal in the interview, but told the outlet, “I feel good, I feel happy.”

Later, they added: “For me, there’s something radical about being queer in this time, in this world, and singing love songs. I’m not going to allow the poison that I read and that I see to affect my way of loving.”

Smith and Cowan grew up about 10 minutes apart from one another near Cambridge, England, but met online in 2022.

According to People, in December of that year, Cowan accompanied Smith to the White House, where Smith performed at a ceremony on the South Lawn after then-President Joe Biden signed the Respect for Marriage Act into law.

“I couldn’t have dreamed of a better companion for the occasion,” Smith told Vogue at the time. “I always feel beautiful whenever I wear Christian’s clothes, both inside and out. Tonight’s is a particularly perfect fit.”

The musician also wore one of Cowan’s designs to this year’s Met Gala in May.

“I have always loved Erté. I love the way he brought costume art to the world through his visionary illustrations,” Cowan later said of Smith’s 2026 Met Gala look, alluding to the Russian-born French artist and designer known for his opera and theatre designs. “This look is a love letter to the king of fashion illustration, and to my love, Sam.”
