Drivers will need to travel around a Cambridge roundabout anti-clockwise during the works

“Essential” sewer works along a busy Cambridge street are set to start tomorrow (May 9) to repair a damaged sewer. Anglian Water has confirmed the “essential” overnight works on Milton Road will be in place from Saturday, May 9 until Wednesday, May 13.

The work will be carried out between 7.30pm and 5am to repair a damaged sewer. A series of specialist CCTV investigations have been carried out by Anglian Water to assess the work needed to fix the pipe.

Tankers will be positioned on the roundabout between Milton Road and Elizabeth Way. There will be temporary traffic lights placed on the roundabout during the overnight works.

Due to this, traffic from Elizabeth Way will need to travel around the roundabout anti-clockwise during the overnight working hours. The traffic lights will be removed during the day so they’re less disruptive for local residents and traffic.

Anglian Water will be using high-powered jetting machines to clean the existing sewer network and keep sewers flowing. A constant closure on part of the bus lane on Milton Road will also be put in place temporarily.

Teams for Anglian Water will be on site to guide vehicles and to keep things moving. A spokesperson for Anglian Water said: “We know this kind of work can be disruptive for the local community, so we’d like to thank residents around Milton Road for their patience while we carry out this essential repair work to keep their sewers flowing.”

The Green Party took six seats from Labour on Cambridge City Council celebrating nationwide gains

The Greens are celebrating after gaining their largest ever share of seats on Cambridge City Council in the local elections. It marks the first time in over a decade that the Labour Party has lost control – though they remain the largest party.

Leader Cameron Holloway was one of six councillors who lost their seats to the Greens as Labour suffered defeats nationwide. The Greens now have 12 councillors in Cambridge, leapfrogging the Liberal Democrats to become the second largest party, behind Labour’s 17 seats.

Cllr Naomi Bennett, leader of the Green group on Cambridge City Council, praised voters, campaigners and “extremely positive campaigns”. She said they are “very proud” that residents “came out and voted for hope not hate in overwhelming numbers on Thursday”.

She said: “Cambridge residents voted for change and we will deliver. Our new councillors will work hard with our existing Green councillors to protect and improve local services and make sure they work efficiently for residents in Cambridge.”

The party added that they came in an “extremely close second” in Shelford, missing out on a seat on South Cambridgeshire District Council by just nine votes.

In Histon and Impington they also came second with the Liberal Democrats just under 200 votes ahead. Miranda Fyfe, the party’s candidate, said the result showed there was “no risk of Reform gaining seats” if voters chose the Greens instead.

She said: “We have been saying for months that it would be between Lib Dems and Greens in these wards, with no risk of Reform gaining seats in Shelford or Histon and we were correct!

“South Cambridgeshire Greens will continue to campaign for real hope and real change here, holding the Lib Dems to account to deliver for people and planet, not profit and greed.”

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was ‘shaken’ by an encounter with a man wearing a balaclava near the Sandringham estate.

The former Duke of York is said to be now demanding taxpayer-funded security following the incident on Wednesday evening near his new Norfolk home.

The masked man allegedly had a crowbar in his vehicle when he approached Andrew while the former prince was out walking his dog.

Alex Jenkinson, 39, from Suffolk, was arrested by officers at 7.30pm on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon and of a public order offence.

He appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court via video link today and pleaded not guilty to using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour to harass someone or cause alarm or distress.

Jenkinson was released on conditional bail and is now banned from entering the county of Norfolk, being in the vicinity of any royally owned property in the UK and from contacting Andrew.

However the former prince is thought to be increasingly concerned about his personal safety following the incident near to Marsh Farm.

A source told the Telegraph that the former Duke of York was more at risk following media coverage of his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein and his excesses during his time as UK trade envoy.

The source added that, despite being stripped of his titles, Andrew’s high profile meant his security arrangements should be reviewed.

They said: ‘There should be a review, which gives proper consideration to Andrew in the light of what has happened.’

Questions over Andrew’s security have been raised since he moved out of the Royal Lodge in Windsor earlier this year.

The Sandringham estate is routinely open to the public, and the former duke no longer enjoys the royal protections afforded to him in Windsor.

To help mitigate risks, CCTV cameras and a 6ft fence have been installed at Marsh Farm and the property has been added to the no-fly area over Sandringham in a bid to bolster the former prince’s safety.

Meanwhile, the Home Office is reviewing security arrangements for Prince Harry, despite the state-side royal’s legal defeat on his rights to automatic public-funded protection.

The Duke of Sussex has argued his risks have stepped up since he moved across the pond and has refused to bring his family to the UK without guaranteed police protection.

The review’s findings will be submitted to the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (RAVEC).

Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth has told supporters his party will “take the necessary steps to form the next Government of Wales”. He says he plans to “reach out to others” who support his plans, and confirmed he will put his name forward to be nominated as the next First Minister.

The Plaid Cymru leader was elected to represent his party in the Bangor Conwy Mon constituency. He made his speech in Llandudno at 6.30pm on Friday, May 8.

His party took 43 seats, with Reform UK in second with 34 seats. Labour came in third with nine seats, a result that led to First Minister Eluned Morgan resigning as Welsh Labour leader. She retains the title of First Minister until a date is set for a vote to replace her. If he tried to find enough votes from other parties to form a formal coalition, the Green Party and Lib Dem members isn’t enough,. so he would need the support of Labour or the Conservatives as well.

The Rob Roy Way is a 78 mile Scottish Great Trail running from Drymen to Pitlochry.

A popular trail cutting through the picturesque Stirlingshire countryside is celebrating its 25th anniversary as its founder releases a special version of the route’s definitive guide.

The Rob Roy Way is a 78 mile Scottish Great Trail running from Drymen to Pitlochry and was established by Jacquetta Megarry, founder of the long-distance guidebook publisher Rucksack Readers, and the late John Henderson, in 2001.

It was created as a means of connecting the landscape to the legendary Rob Roy MacGregor, tracing trackways and a 3,600-year-old stone that would been known to Rob Roy, who died in 1734.

The Way has now become one of Scotland’s premier walking and cycling routes, moving from the Lowlands to Highlands and passing through four of the local Stirlingshire and Perthshire lochs – Venachar, Lubnaig, Earn and Tay.

Ms Megarry said: “It’s actually due to the Stirling Observer that I was able to contact the late John Henderson, who was at that time working on a route between Aberfoyle and Pitlochry, while I was working on a similar trail between Milngavie to Pitlochry.

“We agreed to collaborate and agreed to start the new route at Drymen and the Rob Roy Way has become wonderful, not just for the scenery, but also for the stories and the history along the way.

“You can see the Loch Katrine water scheme which wiped out cholera, engage with the railway heritage of the area and walk over the Glen Ogle viaduct.

“It has definitely grown in popularity over the years similar to the neighbouring West Highland Way, although one trend I have noticed on the Rob Roy Way is the presence of a lot of cyclists and e-bikes because while it was designed as a walking trail, there are large parts of it which are very feasible for cycling.

“There hasn’t been an outbreak of windfarms as there has been in much of the countryside, the lochs and mountains are still beautiful and so the scenery hasn’t really changed over the years.”

Rucksack Readers published the first and only guidebook to the Rob Roy Way in 2002 and will publish its new fifth edition in time for the anniversary.

This new edition has extended coverage for cyclists and includes detailed description of the Glen Quaich alternative.

The path follows ancient tracks and drove roads used by the 18th-century folk hero and outlaw, Rob Roy MacGregor, showcasing the landscapes where he lived, fought, and hid.

Ms Megarry, now in her late 70s, is a veteran trekker having travelled to both Kilimanjaro and two trips to Antartica – as well as walking many of Scotland and England’s national trails.

She added: “I re-walked the Way for the new edition in February and March and got some fabulous photos.

“I thought a lot about John along the way after he sadly passed back in 2021 – we were each doing our research for this anniversary edition and asked me to take it on when he realised he wouldn’t be able to do it.”

The family of Joshua Bruton, 30, who died in an M5 crash in Gloucestershire, have paid an emotional tribute to the ‘gentle giant’ and loving dad to two-year-old son Caden

The family of a man who died in a crash on the M5 in Gloucestershire have paid emotional tribute to him.

Joshua Bruton, 30, described as a “gentle giant” who “could brighten any room”, was pronounced dead at the scene of a two-vehicle crash earlier this week.

In a heartfelt tribute, his family said: “We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Joshua Bruton, who was tragically taken from us following a motorway accident. Josh was truly the most amazing partner, dad, son, brother, uncle, grandson, nephew, and friend anyone could wish for. Known to many as a ‘gentle giant’, he was a man defined by his immense kindness.

“He possessed a naturally positive aura that could brighten any room, and he had a rare ability to provide instant comfort to those he cared about. He truly went above and beyond for his loved ones, always putting their needs before his own.

“He was someone who worked incredibly hard, putting his absolute all into everything he did. Whether it was his professional life or his role within our family, his dedication and drive were unmatched.

“Above all, he was the best daddy to his two-year-old son, Caden. His little boy was his world, and the bond they shared was truly special.

“Life is going to be incredibly hard without him. The void he leaves behind is immeasurable, but we take comfort in the many hearts he touched and the kindness he spread through and through. He will be deeply missed by his entire family and his many friends, but his legacy of love and strength will live on in his son forever.”

Emergency services were called to the scene of a collision between a grey Luton van and a Volkswagen Transporter at around 12.20pm on Wednesday, May 6, reports Gloucestershire Live.

The van left the northbound carriageway near junction 9, for Tewkesbury, and Joshua, who was at the wheel of the van, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers are continuing to investigate the incident and are appealing for any witnesses to the crash to get in touch with the force.

Officers are understood to be working on the theory the mother died giving birth to her baby girl overnight at the family home

Gardai are probing the sudden death of a woman and her newborn child in rural Co Tipperary, it has emerged.

Sources have told us gardai investigating the horror incident in Carrick-on-Suir believe the woman may have died giving birth to her baby overnight.

It is understood the woman’s partner made the grim discovery in a bathroom in their home in the town at around 1pm today.

Sources tell us the woman and her partner are from eastern Europe and have been living in the town for a relatively short period of time.

Although gardai have only just begun their probe, officers are understood to believe the deaths of the mother and her baby daughter are a tragic incident.

The house has been sealed off and a full Garda investigation is now underway.

A Garda spokeswoman told the Irish Mirror: “Gardaí and emergency services are currently at the scene of an incident in Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary this afternoon Friday 8th May 2026.”

Gardai have also established an incident room and are set to appoint a family liaison officer.
