York 22.5m-high 5G mast application lodged with council

An application to put up the mast in Mill Lane, off the A1237 in Askham Bryan, has been submitted to York Council.

Telecommunications firm Cornerstone stated the mast was needed to replace existing equipment at Askham Bryan College following a change in its commercial relationship with Virgin Media and O2.

They added it would improve 5G coverage along the A64 and surrounding villages.

Plans from Cornerstone, which describes itself as the UK’s leading mobile infrastructure company, would see the 22.5m-high monopole installed along with antennas, dishes and an equipment cabinet.

The application stated the proposed site was found to be the most appropriate of those looked at in the area.

It added the works came as part of wider efforts to improve mobile connectivity across the UK, with the company already managing almost 20,000 sites nationally.

Plans stated: “A replacement radio base station is required to replace roof-mounted equipment on the water tower at Askham Bryan College.

“The water tower does not provide a suitable current or future solution to meet 5G coverage and capacity objectives, particularly the need for additional antenna height to improve coverage along the A64 and surrounding villages.

“The area experiences high levels of demand from road users, including those using the A64 and A1237, Askham Bryan Wildlife & Conservation Park, and the College.

“Cornerstone’s commercial relationship with Virgin Media-O2 has changed, effectively increasing its independence to work with other companies in the deployment of mobile infrastructure.”
