In this episode of Money Matters, I sat down with a 24-year-old from Alwar, Rajasthan, who is carrying close to ₹17 lakh in debt across ten different loans – many of them sitting at 24% interest. He has spent the last three years trying to dig his way out, all while teaching at an NGO and taking tuitions for barely ₹35,000 a month. His mother has had a heart attack and ongoing health issues, his sister’s life is still ahead of her, and the entire weight of all of it rests on his shoulders. When we did the math, the truth was brutal: at his current income, paying this off purely through EMIs would take him 11 to 12 years.

But here’s the part that stayed with me. He owns a shop worth ₹25 lakh and farmland worth almost a crore. So this conversation became about a much bigger lesson: money is supposed to work for your life, your needs, your peace. The moment it stops showing up for you in your hardest times, it isn’t wealth anymore – it’s a chain that ties you down through emotion alone.
