‘I can’t tell you that’, says ref leaving Nathan Aspinall in stitches after darts star asks bizarre question

Aspinall found himself up against pal and Premier League rival Michael Smith in a third round clash.

Things did not go to plan for The Asp, who crashed out with a 6-3 defeat.

But both men were all smiles following an amusing incident in the final leg.

Smith left himself with just 16 points to seal victory.

While Aspinall faced a daunting task with a total of 236.

And hilariously, he asked the ref “can I leave a finish?” before hurling his darts at the board.

However, the man by the board had a blunt response, saying: “I can’t tell you that.”

This left everyone giggling, including the judge.

And as it stood, Aspinall was unable to leave a finish as he took his points tally down to 194.

Smith appeared to laugh uncontrollably as he stepped up to the plate.

Yet he made no mistake with his checkout as he secured the win.

Last month Aspinall revealed he was nearing a darts comeback after undergoing painful treatment on an elbow injury.

He said: “I had to go back to the Matchplay and give it my all to try and defend my title, but I knew it was never going to happen. Obviously, after that I made the call to pull out of everything and get it done.

“It’s been a tough couple of months for me, but there’s light at the end of the tunnel. The treatment has gone fantastically and we’re not far off coming back!

“I’ve just been back to the hospital to get all of my results and basically, in a nutshell, I’ve had all these tendon problems, golfer’s elbow, tendonitis.

“So I’ve had six or seven treatments of shockwave therapy, plus rehab, but I was just still getting a lot of pain and a lot of swelling in my elbow.

“There’s basically a bone in my elbow joint that’s rubbing into things. So I need to have an injection with something called plasma directly into my elbow joint. That’s the last piece of the puzzle.”

Fans can't believe who Sir Alex Ferguson sat next to for Man Utd's cup win after England legend from other sport spotted

The legendary Red Devils manager, 82, was recently relieved of his £2million-a-year ambassadorial role at the club.

But he remains welcome at matches and was on hand to watch the first game since Erik ten Hag was sacked.

Fergie will have been proud to see one of his former players, Ruud van Nistelrooy, taking charge of the team on an interim basis.

But it was not the Scot’s presence at the match that surprised fans.

Instead, it was the company he was keeping as he chatted to an England cricketing legend.

Michael Vaughan was pictured talking to Fergie during Man Utd‘s comfortable victory.

The skipper for England’s iconic 2005 Ashes triumph was a name many would not have expected to see with Ferguson.

And people reacted in their droves on social media.

One fan said: “Why is Michael Vaughan sitting next to SAF 😭😭.”

A third replied: “Poor Sir Alex having to watch the game with Michael Vaughan in his ear.”

Kamaru Usman: BMF title ‘hypothetical’ that UFC made up ‘because of me’

Kamaru Usman: BMF title ‘hypothetical’ that UFC made up ‘because of me’

Kamaru Usman believes when the story of the BMF title is being told, his name should be part of the narrative.

Usman discussed the BMF title on his podcast with Henry Cejudo, and asked fans why they hold the championship — currently held by Max Holloway — in such high regard.

“Guys, why are we talking about it like this is a real title? It’s not,” Usman said on Pound 4 Pound. “This was a hypothetical that was made up because of me. It was made up because of me.”

The former welterweight champion says that when the BMF belt was introduced to the world at UFC 244, the original fight that the UFC brought to the table was Usman vs. Colby Covington. But the fight didn’t come together — which led to UFC CEO Dana White creating the BMF title that Nate Diaz called for in a callout for Jorge Masvidal, who had recently knocked out Ben Askren in record time at UFC 239 in July 2019.

When asked to elaborate by Cejudo, Usman says history would be different if he had defended his welterweight title against Covington that night in November 2019.

“Covington [and I] were supposed to fight at MSG, New York,” Usman explained. “The fight didn’t happen. They needed a fight to headline that card, they needed something with some steam. This is MSG, you can’t just put any fight card at MSG. You’ve got to come correct when you go to MSG. …

“What’s the hottest ticket out there? Jorge ‘Gambred’ Masvidal — the hottest thing smoking. Then, of course, you have Nate Diaz with his mystique that he always carries. … Nate Diaz had already called out Masvidal after his previous fight. … Dana jumps on, how do we promote this fight? Let’s create this, all right. It’s called the baddest mother f’er belt. C’mon, are you serious?”

Masvidal would win the fight via doctor’s stoppage TKO, and was awarded the BMF title by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Red Bull “can only do so much” for Perez as future hangs in balance

Published

on

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has insisted his team has done all it can to support a struggling Sergio Perez after a nightmare home weekend in Mexico.

Perez was eliminated in Q1, copped a time penalty for parking forward of his grid spot and then went on to lose further ground after he and RB’s combative Liam Lawson collided in Turn 5, resulting in floor damage.

After conceding to having a “terrible” season, Perez’s calamitous weekend has put further pressure on the 34-year-old to step up, and pressure on Red Bull to reconsider its options for 2025 after sliding to third place in the constructors’ standings.

When pressed on the Mexican’s future, Horner said: “Checo, again, has had a horrible weekend. Nothing has gone right for him this weekend.

“He knows Formula 1 is a results-based business and inevitably, when you’re not delivering, the spotlight is firmly on you.

“There is always going to be scrutiny on that. As a team, we need to have both cars scoring points and that is the nature of Formula 1.”

Asked if that scrutiny applied to 2025 or if Red Bull could make a change sooner than that, Horner confirmed Perez would be in the car in Brazil but didn’t offer much reassurance beyond the upcoming Sao Paulo weekend.

“From the team’s perspective, we’re working with him as hard as we can to try to support him,” he added. “We’ve done everything that we can to support Checo and will continue to do so in Brazil next weekend.

“But there comes a point in time that you can only do so much. There comes a point in time that difficult decisions have to be made.

“We’re now third in the constructors’ championship. Our determination is to try and get back into a winning position but it’s going to be a tall order over these next four races.”

Perez was furious with Lawson’s aggressive driving style, blaming the New Zealander – who is in the running for Perez’s seat – for ruining his chance to score points as his floor damage resulted in a big downforce loss.

But Horner didn’t appear to side fully with either driver. “That’s racing. We saw a lot of tough racing out there,” he told Sky Sports F1.

In his print media session, Horner – drawing attention to recent insinuations that Red Bull and RB work together as an entity – then added: “I think it demonstrates that you can see the two teams do race each other and, while having the same ownership, are independent in the way that they go racing.

“Liam has apologised to Checo for the incident and obviously, there will be lessons that come out of that. But it’s frustrating, certainly for Checo’s race, to pick up the damage and lose valuable points.”

PSG: Ligue 1 side forced to close part of stadium for visit of Toulouse as punishment for homophobic chanting

Paris St-Germain will be forced to close part of the Parc des Princes for next month’s Ligue 1 match against Toulouse as punishment for homophobic chanting by their fans.

The incident occurred during PSG’s 4-2 home win over Strasbourg on 19 October when supporters chanted about Marseille midfielder Adrien Rabiot.

France international Rabiot played for PSG between 2012 and 2019 but joined rivals Marseille on a free transfer in September after being released by Juventus.

PSG played Marseille eight days after the Strasbourg match, winning 3-0 at the Stade Velodrome.

The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) said in a statement that PSG have to close the Auteuil stand – the end behind the goal traditionally occupied by a number of the club’s ultras.

However, the sanction does not start until 5 November which means PSG’s Ligue 1 match against Lens this weekend will take place without any restrictions.

Instead PSG will be forced to close part of their ground for the visit of Toulouse on 22 November.

Four PSG players were given one-match suspensions over their role in offensive chants after a win over Marseille last season.

Tottenham 2-1 Man City LIVE RESULT: Spurs STUN Pep's City in Carabao Cup, Liverpool beat Brighton, Palace shock Villa

View from St James’ Park

So it’s revenge for Newcastle following Sunday’s Premier League defeat at Stamford Bridge.

And Eddie Howe’s side have also avenged last season’s Carabao Cup KO at the hands of Chelsea.

They’re through to the last eight and a kind draw will evoke memories of two seasons ago when they reached the Wembley final only to lose 2-0 to Manchester United.

Chelsea huffed and puffed in the second half but never looked like overturning the Toon’s 2-0 interval lead.

Newcastle took a trip down memory lane to ignite their season and dump last season’s beaten finalists Chelsea out of the Carabao Cup.

Having been out of sorts for much of the campaign so far, the Toon players rediscovered the energy, flair and goalscoring threat of recent years to lift spirits among a fanbase which was starting to doubt them.

This was the Newcastle who destroyed Chelsea 12 months ago and the previous season too, the red-hot hosts who had previously turned St James’ Park into a foreboding fortress, not the anaemic, goal-shy side of late.

Chelsea have been more pedigree than pantomine in recent weeks but this was a night they resorted to southern softies mode against opponents with the bit between their teeth.

To be fair to the visitors, they had carried the greater attacking threat in the opening 20 minutes but once they gifted Newcastle the lead, there was an inevitability about the outcome.

The two goals which separated the sides, scored in the 23rd and 26th minutes, were both messy, not that the celebrating Toon Army cared a hoot about that.

View from Manchester

If Erik ten Hag was watching in Amsterdam he must have been wondering if this was indeed the same Manchester United team. Why does this always happen?

The old boss goes, his assistant takes over and the team transforms overnight. It makes you wonder what Ruud van Nistelrooy was doing on the training ground in the first place.

Much of this victory that put the Red Devils into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup was down to the strength of the opposition. Leicester City fielded a team with nine changes and was similar in strength to that which drew 0-0 with Walsall in the last round before winning on penalties.

United by contrast were strong, Van Nistelrooy wasn’t going to pass this chance up to be a winner from the Old Traford dug out. Mind you to be fair to him whoever pulls on a United shirt nowadays nothing can be guaranteed.

So credit Van Nistelrooy for getting a tune out of this lot just two days after Ten Hag was dismissed. The regular boos heard here became cheers and smiles replaced frowns and shaking heads.

It was reminiscent of..well when they played Barnsley in the last round and won 7-0 but not much else in recent memory.

This playing out from the back is all very impressive when it comes off…but how many times does it land teams in the you-know-what.

It did just that for Aston Villa, when Diego Carlos slid the ball to Daichi Kamada and the Palace substitute drilled in the winner.

The old down-towner might not be so pleasant on the eye, but you don’t concede from it!

Pep Guardiola’s injury problems continue to pile up as Savinho has been forced off on a stretcher with what looks like a right ankle issue.

The Brazilian, who was impressing, appeared to suffer it in an innocuous challenge with Destiny Udogie by the touchline.

But he ended up going down and had to be carried off, looking in considerable pain, being replaced by rookie Jacob Wright.

Gabriel Jesus scored his first goal in 274 days to put Arsenal on course for the quarter-finals.

But the Brazilian was upstaged by teen sensation Ethan Nwaneri who is becoming the stand out star of the Carabao Cup for the Gunners.

After grabbing two against Bolton in round three, the 17-year-old underlined his potential AGAIN here by curling home a first-half beauty.

He came agonisingly close to adding a couple more too before leaving the pitch to a standing ovation from the visiting fans just before the end.

While this competition may not be the priority for Mikel Arteta, fans will be hoping they can go all the way so they can see more of Nwaneri.

The only downside to a highly-satisfactory night for the Emirates chief was that his team did not score more.

Preston had won just three of their last 12 matches but they have been hard to beat since Paul Heckingbottom took over early in the season.

They have also done well in this competition – knocking out Championship high-fliers Sunderland and then claiming a Prem scalp by sending Fulham out in an epic penalty shoot-out.

But they were no match for Arteta’s side which showed eight changes from the team which drew with Liverpool on Sunday.
