2026 Prix Kergorlay triumph unlocks Melbourne Cup ballot waiver

Published

on

France’s elite endurance event has earned ‘win and you’re in’ status for the prestigious Australian showpiece, the Melbourne Cup.

The Group 2 Prix Kergorlay over 3000m aligns with America’s Belmont Gold Cup and the Ebor Handicap as qualifiers exempting winners from the ballot for the Melbourne Cup (3200m) on Flemington’s first Tuesday of November.

Historically, the Prix Kergorlay has been an excellent guide to prospective Melbourne Cup winners.

Americain dominated both races in 2010, Dunaden lined up in the Prix Kergorlay in 2011 before conquering the Melbourne Cup.

Protectionist, trained in Germany, followed suit by winning the pair in 2014.

Victoria Racing Club Chief Executive Kylie Rogers highlighted the France Galop tie-up as a nod to two of racing’s greatest countries.

“France has a storied history and connection with the Melbourne Cup, and we are delighted to formalise our partnership with France Galop by introducing the Prix Kergorlay as a Golden Ticket race,” Rogers said in a statement.

“The Melbourne Cup attracts the best stayers from across the world, and this new partnership both incentivises and ensures that the strongest international contenders are competing on the first Tuesday in November.

“We look forward to building on this partnership and the long-shared bond between our two racing nations.”

Saturday’s Flemington card launches the quest for Melbourne Cup berths, with the Roy Higgins (2600m) providing exemption to its champion.

Victorian ‘win and you’re in’ fixtures also feature the Andrew Ramsden (2800m), Bart Cummings (2500m), Archer Stakes (2500m) all hosted at Flemington, together with Caulfield Cup (2400m), Moonee Valley Gold Cup, Geelong Cup, and Cox Plate (2040m).

Blue Jays notebook: Daulton Varsho gears up for probable Monday return

Published

on

PHOENIX — Fresh off their best day at the plate this season, the Toronto Blue Jays should get another lift for their lineup Monday when Daulton Varsho is expected to return to action in the series opener at the Los Angeles Angels.

The Gold Glove centre-fielder left Friday’s 6-3 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks after two innings with left knee discomfort, but said Sunday that the tightness in his quad which led to pulling on his kneecap had eased.

Varsho and the Blue Jays considered a return for Sunday’s 10-4 win but decided “out of caution” to “not to push it.”

“I’ll probably be in the lineup (Monday),” he added.

Varsho’s been one of the Blue Jays’ steadier threats at the plate this season, batting .262/.333/.462 with three homers and four doubles, so his return will be welcome.

The quad issue was a first for him and “came out nowhere” before the game Friday after he had “a good day” of pre-game work.

“All of a sudden it started hurting and I was like, this is not good,” he said.  “I went out to the line, I’m like, I’ve got to test it out running-wise. I still didn’t feel good. Told Schneids (manager John Schneider) before my first at-bat, I was like, ‘Just letting you know, my knee’s bothering me,’ I already got it checked out by Jose (Ministral, the head trainer), structurally there’s nothing wrong, so we’re just going to test it out. After my first at-bat, the first inning, I was like, This is not working.

He started improving Saturday and was much better Sunday, which was “the best-case scenario, knowing that if I can get two days off my feet, we can loosen everything back up back to normal.

“You’d try to push through it if it’s a World Series-type of thing,” he added. “But when we’ve got 140 games left, there’s no point in me (risking) being on the IL for two months. That’d be a problem more than just a couple of days.”

McKay still going: The Blue Jays and Seattle Mariners held their expansion draft Nov. 5, 1976, and Dave McKay, a bubble-of-the-roster infielder for the Minnesota Twins at the time, thought he might get a phone call that day. But he forgot that he and wife Lene had turned off the phone ringer at their Vancouver home so toddler son Cody, a future big-league catcher with the St. Louis Cardinals, could nap without interruption.

All day long, then, the phone remained silent, and McKay figured nothing was brewing with him since no one had called, so he went for dinner with his family at the home of some friends.

“At night, we turned on the news and saw them say, ‘Our Dave McKay was picked by the Blue Jays in the expansion draft,’” recalled McKay, the Arizona Diamondbacks’ first-base coach since 2014. “I was totally blindsided. But I had been missing phone calls all day. People were saying, we’d been calling you and calling you. Kind of a unique day.”

The 49th pick in that expansion draft made McKay the first Canadian to play for the Blue Jays, starting at third base that snowy day April 7, 1977, when the franchise opened with a 9-5 win over the Chicago White Sox. Batting eighth, he went 2-for-4 with an RBI and he recalled a photo of himself creeping in from third, footsteps left in the snow behind him.

“That was the coldest day I’ve ever played in my life,” McKay said of the 0 C temperature at first pitch. “We called in that morning, asking if we’re going to have a few days off because there was so much snow out there. And they said, ‘We’re going to play this thing, come on in.’ We won the game and it warmed up pretty good afterwards.”

McKay spent three years with the Blue Jays, who are celebrating their 50th season this year, before finishing out his career with three more years with the Athletics. In 1984, he began a remarkable coaching career that’s given him five decades in the game with Oakland, St. Louis, the Cubs and now Arizona.

“You know what, you’ve got to be 76 to do it,” he said of his longevity with a laugh. “That’s a lot of years. Last year, we were in Toronto and one of the players said, ‘You played here at one time, right?’ I said, ‘Yeah, a while ago.’

“I do think a lot about how many years ago that took place. I think about the guys that were there and the few guys are not no longer with us. It’s really hard to believe it was 50 years ago I played third base there and here I am still doing it. Crazy.”

Mantiply’s meaningful return: Blue Jays lefty Joe Mantiply struggled last season in ways he never had before, both mentally and physically, which is why returning to Phoenix to face the Diamondbacks team that released him last June 1 meant something to him.

“Oh, for sure,” said the 35-year-old. “I’ve always felt like I belong at this level and when I’m healthy, I’m usually pretty good. That was the main focus, like, just get healthy. There’s also knowing, at some point, this ends for everybody, there’s an expiration date on every career, you just never know when it’s going to be. I’m trying to enjoy each day back at this level and contribute the best I can.”

Mantiply’s done that since the Blue Jays selected his contract from triple-A Buffalo on April 5 amid the immediate post-Cody-Ponce-injury bullpen churn, covering 6.2 innings in six outings while earning a win April 10 versus Minnesota with a shutout inning of work.

He’s had to rebuild himself after his career hit a wall last year, when he struggled out of the gate, was optioned, and then got hit hard again upon his return to the majors. That led Arizona to release the 2022 all-star, who was part of the 2023 World Series run and made 236 appearances for the Diamondbacks from 2021 through 2024.

At the time, Mantiply was pitching through hip issues that caused him to compensate elsewhere in his body “and it ended up mechanically throwing me off.” A ghastly 15.83 ERA in 10 games followed, which “created a lot of self-doubt and just a lot of embarrassment, really,” he said. “At some point, it’s so hard to go out there when you’re not confident in yourself. You feel like you’re letting your teammates down and letting the organization down, which, in the grand scheme of things, you’re not. But mentally, internally, you feel like you are. That was tough. That was a grind.”

A minor-league deal with the Blue Jays signed July 13 provided Mantiply with a place to figure out his issues while “letting me work at my own pace, they didn’t really rush me, put a ton of pressure on me, force anything or whatever.”

“They had some good things to say about things they thought I could do to get back close to what I was,” Mantiply explained. “When the off-season hit, these guys reached out at the beginning and I felt comfortable with the relationships.”

They agreed to another minor-league deal on March 3 and he pitched well enough in camp that the parting message to him was, “just be ready when we need you.”

“I didn’t expect it to be that soon,” he added.

That meant he was back in the majors in time for the trip to Arizona, which brought back a flood of memories, good and bad. He pitched one inning Friday night, allowing a run on two hits in a 6-3 loss, further turning the page on his toughest season.

“I’ve never refused to take the ball and if I can’t pitch in a game back-to-back days, I don’t think I’m healthy — that’s essentially what it came to be,” Mantiply said of his end in Arizona. “It was tough. It wasn’t ideal. Didn’t envision my time here ending that way. But it’s part of the game. … Once I cleared waivers, the Blue Jays were one of the first teams to reach out. These guys gave me an opportunity and a place to play, which was huge.”

New details have emerged surrounding the arrest of former Georgia wide receiver Zachariah Branch, who is facing two misdemeanor charges following a run-in with law enforcement just days ahead of the NFL Draft.

Branch, who is a projected second-round pick, was arrested early Sunday morning in Athens, Georgia, and charged with two counts of obstructing public sidewalks/streets – prowling and obstruction of a law enforcement officer.

The NFL Network obtained the police report from Branch’s arrest, which described an encounter over an alleged sidewalk incident with law enforcement, in which police alleged that the former Bulldogs star failed “to comply with multiple verbal lawful commands.”

“A male, later identified as Zacharia Branch, continued to stand on the sidewalk without making an attempt to move. I continued to give Zacharia Branch verbal commands to move from blocking the sidewalk and advised that if he did not, he would receive a citation for blocking the sidewalk,” the excerpt from the report read.

“Zacharia Branch smirked, then stepped backwards and to the right, then remained standing upon the public sidewalk, so as to obstruct, hinder, and impede free passage upon the sidewalk as well as impede free ingress/egress to or from the adjacent places of business,” the report continued.

“Due to those actions and Zacharia Branch’s failure to comply with multiple verbal lawful commands, he was placed under arrest for misdemeanor Obstruction of LEO and received a citation for Obstructing Public Sidewalks.”

Vikings Ruined Someone’s Offseason Dreams

Vikings running back Aaron Jones was an obvious cut candidate entering this year’s offseason, but the franchise and the player agreed on a revised deal to keep him around for a third season. That ruined another organization’s plans.

It turns out, the Washington Commanders were interested in his services for the upcoming season.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter revealed in his pre-draft nuggets, “Even if Love does not wind up going No. 3, he will not slide far. The Commanders at No. 7 would seem to be his floor. Last spring, the Commanders planned to pursue Aaron Jones Sr. before he returned to the Vikings.”

Jones’ exit was a foregone conclusion at one point, and even reports about his release surfaced. Too tasty were the $7.75 million in cap space the club could have saved by releasing the ball-carrier.

Ultimately, Jones took a pay cut and avoided a move. The difference between a pay cut and potential savings ended up too insignificant for a divorce to make sense for Minnesota. Finding a replacement would’ve cost more and perhaps still be a downgrade.

Schefter added about Washington’s possible draft plans: “This offseason, Washington added Rachaad White and Jerome Ford to join Jacory Croskey-Merritt, but the team still does not have much money invested in the position. If the opportunity presents itself, some expect the Commanders would rush to turn in the card for Love, giving Washington a great offensive tandem with him and Jayden Daniels.”

Jeremiyah Love, the crown jewel of this year’s running back class, might be off the board before the Commanders are on the clock, but if he’s there, the prospects of pairing the dynamic runner with quarterback Jayden Daniels are intriguing.

The Vikings were considered a potential destination for Love throughout the 2025 season, but the strong finish with a five-game winning streak ended that speculation.

Instead, it’ll continue to be a timeshare between last year’s trade acquisition, Jordan Mason, and 2024 free-agent addition Jones. The reality that both enter the season with free agency looming next March could put running back on this year’s draft menu.

In addition to the short-term contract, his age rules out any long-term plans. At 31, a significant decline could happen at any point, especially for a player who has dealt with injuries for years. A hamstring injury cost him five games last year.

Still, he was solid in 2025, ranking in the middle of the pack in EPA/rush (23rd/49 eligible RBs), success rate (16th/49), and TFL percentage (19th/49). The counting numbers showed 548 rushing yards and two touchdowns, with a receiving output of 199 yards and one score.

Jones is one of the premier third-down backs in the league, as he brings a rare combination of sure hands and blocking talent to the table. Most receiving backs are smaller and lack the oomph in pass protection.

He’s also a key component in the leadership structure. When the club and the runner agreed on a new deal, NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero noted, “The Vikings never wanted to let go of Aaron Jones, who is a strong locker room presence and still effective when healthy at age 31. The sides worked towards a new deal and found common ground to keep in purple for another season.”

The pairing between Mason and Jones is a good fit on paper, as Jones is the more shifty technician, while Mason brings the size and power to run over defenders. Adding a rookie in the draft could complete the running back room for the upcoming season. Depth rusher Zavier Scott remains from last year, while 2022 draftee Ty Chandler was not retained in free agency.

Jones will wear the purple colors in the 2026 season and it’s good to know that at least one other team was interested in his services. The veteran is just one year removed from a season with over 1,500 scrimmage yards.

“I’m not going to jump on that bandwagon” – Gary Lineker makes big claim on Arsenal title charge as he dismisses Manchester City loss as decider

Published

on

England great Gary Lineker has backed Arsenal to notch their first Premier League title in 22 years despite recently crashing to a 2-1 league loss at Manchester City.

Earlier this Sunday (April 19), the Gunners tasted their fourth defeat in six matches across all competitions at Etihad Stadium. Rayan Cherki opened the scoring in the 16th minute before Kai Havertz’s equaliser two minutes later. Erling Haaland’s goal in the 65th minute ultimately prove to be the difference between the two footballing giants.

After losing to Pep Guardiola’s side, Arsenal are still atop the Premier League table with 70 points from 33 matches. On the other hand, Manchester City are in second place with 67 points from 32 games, and could dethrone the Gunners after beating Burnley on Wednesday (April 22).

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Lineker provided his two cents on Mikel Arteta’s side and their ongoing quest to end their Premier League title drought. The ex-Tottenham Hotspur striker said (h/t Mirror):

“It’s not impossible that it’ll be down to goal difference and it is very, very close. It’s great for the neutrals because you want it to go as close as you can right at the death, so in that sense it was good. I feel a little bit for Arsenal, they’re going through it a little bit but they’re still in the semi-final of the Champions League, they’ve got plenty to play for, they can still win the Premier League title.”

The 1986 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot winner added:

“A lot of people will go, ‘Arsenal have choked’, it could still be a memorable season for them, I’m not going to jump on that bandwagon that they’re going to throw it away, it’s too soon to say that. They did show something, even though it didn’t go their way, it could have been different.”

Arteta’s club will face Newcastle United in the league on Saturday before taking on Atletico Madrid in a UEFA Champions League tie on April 29.

Arsenal star targeted by European giants

According to French outlet L’Equipe, Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli’s entourage has met with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) sporting director Luis Campos of late. He is believed to be a summer target for the Parisians.

Martinelli, 24, could be sold by the north London outfit this summer as his contract will expire in June 2027. He has also struggled to start Premier League games this season, scoring one goal in just 10 starts so far.

Overall, the Brazilian attacker has bagged 62 goals and provided 35 assists in 272 overall appearances for the Emirates Stadium outfit so far.
