Mikaël Kingsbury has always credited those around him for his success. Now as his career winds down, it’s his turn to receive some praise for his impact on freestyle skiing.
Before the Canadian championships, the 33-year-old from Deux-Montagnes, Que., paid tribute to many people while reflecting on his career. Near the top of that list was Alexandre Bilodeau.
At a time when he was just a rookie on the World Cup circuit, the “King of Moguls” tried to absorb everything he could by studying the sport’s elite athletes. Already well established, Bilodeau was among them.
“I had a similar mindset,” said Bilodeau, who won Olympic moguls gold at the 2010 and 2014 Olympics. “You learn from the best by being around the best. I watched Jeremy Bloom and Janne Lahtela, and then you take bits from each of them that stand out to you, and that helps you find your own path.”

Years later, it’s clear the student has surpassed the teacher. Kingsbury, 33, will retire Saturday night with a resume that includes 100 World Cup wins, 29 Crystal Globes, nine world titles and five Olympic medals, including two gold.
“The question answers itself,” said Bilodeau, a 19-time World Cup winner on the World Cup circuit, when asked what Kingsbury represents to freestyle skiing.
“Mikaël is a legend of our sport. He’s broken every record. The person I got to know when he was younger and the human he’s become, he’s an amazing person that I have a lot of respect for.”
Bilodeau knows Kingsbury well, since their families owned cottages near each other in Saint-Sauveur, Que. Bilodeau’s sister, Béatrice, is the same age as Kingsbury, and they skied together.

“I saw him grow up,” Bilodeau said. “I’ve known for a long time that he’d make it to World Cup competition and break through. Did I think he’d win this much? Maybe not, but he always had great talent, and he’s probably one of the most passionate people about our sport.
“He’s truly passionate, and when you’re passionate, that makes a big difference,” he added. “I think everyone on the World Cup circuit is passionate, but Mikaël still lives and breathes it. He still watches videos of Jean-Luc (Brassard) and Lahtela, and he’s 33.”
While Kingsbury holds virtually every record in the discipline, he’s not the only Canadian with an impressive resume. Before him, Brassard, Bilodeau, Jennifer Heil and Justine Dufour-Lapointe all won Olympic gold and piled up World Cup wins.
No one wants to take anything away from the talent of rising skier Julien Viel and his teammates, or place too much pressure on them. But one thing is clear: Kingsbury cannot be replaced on the national team.

A dip in results is therefore expected, not that it’s concerning.
“It’s like any sport,” Bilodeau said. “You have to expect a bit of a lull, but young athletes develop quickly over a five or six-year cycle. Would anyone have thought that little Mikaël skiing in Saint-Sauveur would go on to win 100 World Cup gold medals? Probably not.”
The next wave of success could come sooner than expected thanks to the legacy of Kingsbury, who never shied away from a leadership role or from setting the standard.
“He started out as an idol,” Viel said. “When I was young, I wanted to be like him. Then he became my mentor, he gave me a lot of advice. And finally, he became my rival. I’ve been incredibly lucky to have him. I wish him all the best in retirement.”

Kingsbury’s impact extends well beyond moguls. News of his retirement resonated in Mont-Sainte-Anne, where a snowboard cross World Cup event is taking place this weekend.
“What he’s done for sport in Quebec, it helps other disciplines get more recognition,” said Éliot Grondin, a two-time Crystal Globe winner. “We’ve never had an athlete as dominant as him in Quebec.”
“He’s really a great source of inspiration for Quebec sport,” added Audrey McManiman. “I don’t know him personally, but I had the chance to meet him at the (Milan Cortina Games) opening ceremony. He carried our flag with pride. It was special to walk behind him. He brings great energy and a calm presence. There’s a lot other athletes can learn from that.”
Will that legacy be enough for a Canadian to one day surpass Kingsbury’s records? Nothing is impossible, Bilodeau said. But it won’t be easy.

“Ten years ago, would we have thought Wayne Gretzky’s records could be broken? No,” Bilodeau said. “And they were last year. There are so many factors that come into play that can change the picture, whether it’s rule changes, career longevity, injuries. There are tons of variables.”

Speaking to reporters Friday afternoon, Sheriff John Budensiek confirmed that there were no injuries as a result of the collision.
Woods was driving a dark colored Land Rover at “high speeds” when he clipped a truck pulling a trailer, according to law enforcement.

The driver of the truck said that he was starting to turn into a driveway off a two-lane road when he looked in his mirror and saw Woods driving towards him and tried to overtake him at the last minute and swerved to avoid a full crash at the last minute.

“On scene we had DRE experts evaluating him and they believe from on scene that he was not impaired on alcohol,” Budensiek said. “They believe he was some type of medication or drug.” However, the golfer had cooperated with the breathalyzer test, he added.
It was confirmed that no medications were found in the golfer’s car.

In February 2021,Woods was hospitalized with “multiple leg injuries” after being involved in a serious car crash in California.
Firefighters had to free the golf superstar from his Genesis GV80 SUV using pry tools and an axe following the incident in Rancho Palos Verdes, near Los Angeles.
Authorities said at the time that his car, which was the only vehicle involved in the crash, rolled over and sustained “major damage” in the incident near Rolling Hills Estates.

Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews will miss the remainder of the regular season after sustaining a grade 3 MCL tear and quad contusion in his left leg following a knee-on-knee collision with Anaheim Ducks defenseman Radko Gudas. What caught many off guard including Hockey Hall of Famer Chris Pronger after the play was that no Maple Leafs player confronted Gudas as Matthews lay in pain.
That lack of response became the focus of Pronger’s comments this week on the Nasty Knuckles podcast. Watching Gudas look around expecting retaliation that never came, Pronger said he found himself laughing at the absurdity of it all and wondering what it says about the Maple Leafs as a team.
“If there was a camera on me, they would have thought I was a sick man,” Pronger said. “Because I started laughing when I saw the hit, because I looked at all the players. And I’m looking at, I’m literally staring at Gudas right here as I’m looking at the camera. I’m staring right at it, I see it happen, and I’m looking, and he’s like looking around, he’s looking around, knowing, okay, somebody’s coming. And they all just, I’m like, what are we doing here, guys?”

None of Toronto’s other four skaters on the ice including forwards William Nylander and rookie Easton Cowan, and defensemen Morgan Rielly and Carlo, confronted Gudas while their captain was writhing in pain on the ice.
“And the worst part, not only did they not respond in that regard, they didn’t even go over and check on him,” Pronger continued. “Yeah, they’re all so far away. The trainer was there, and they were gone. They didn’t even check on him. I’m like, wow, this is interesting.”
The incident occurred at 15:47 of the second period during Toronto’s 6-4 win against the Anaheim Ducks at Scotiabank Arena on Mar. 12. Matthews crumpled to the ice when he tried to sidestep the hit in the slot from Gudas, who was assessed a major penalty for kneeing and a game misconduct.
Gudas charged Matthews in front of the crease and led with his knee leaving the Maple Leafs captain in visible agony on the ice. Matthews was helped off the ice by a trainer and teammate Brandon Carlo putting minimal weight on his left leg.

“Well, that’s the huge $64 million question. What do they do?” Pronger asked. “Do they blow it up? Do they fire everybody again? Do they add on the fringes? Do they trade one or two guys? Ultimately, that’s up to ownership. That’s an ownership decision of what direction do you want to take this. Because clearly, it’s going in the wrong direction.”
The Hall of Famer emphasized that this wasn’t an isolated incident for Toronto.
“And that’s not the first time something like that has happened where nothing has happened,” Pronger said. “And it’s not like, you guys know Chief [Berube], it’s not like he’s not going in there going like, guys, you’ve got to protect one another. You’ve got to be together… There’s something bigger going on there that we don’t know about.”
Matthews underwent MCL knee repair surgery on Mar. 19 with the Maple Leafs announcing that he faces a recovery timeline of approximately 12 weeks. He is expected to be ready for training camp next season.
India’s Tejaswin Shankar started his decathlon season on a winning note at the David Noble Relays 2026 athletics meet in Texas, USA, emerging victorious in the event with a new wind-assisted personal best of 7947 points.
Competing for the first time in decathlon this season, Shankar scored 7947 points on Friday, falling 53 points short of 8000m mark in a wind-aided competition.
Shankar’s effort in Texas was better than the standing national record of 7826 points, which he himself set in Poland last year, but it was not ratified as a new record as per the World Athletics Rules because of excessive tailwinds.

According to World Athletics rules, decathlon records require the average wind assistance across the 100m, long jump, and 110m hurdles to not exceed +2.0 m/s.
In the Texas meet, the 100m (+4.7 m/s) and Long Jump (+4.5 m/s) readings significantly exceeded the legal limits..
In Shankar’s case, the tailwind during the 100m event was +4.7m/s, the long jump event was +4.5m/s and the 110m hurdles event was +2.5m/s, taking the average to +3.9m/s, making the performance ineligible to be considered as a record.
Shankar’s victory follows a successful indoor season where he recently won heptathlon gold at the 2026 Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in February..

During the Texas meet, Shankar, who also holds the Indian high jump national record, also logged personal best marks in 100m (10.59s), long jump (7.66m), shot put (13.98m) and pole vault (4.35m).
Emil Uhlin came second with 7773 points and Dorian Charles ended third with 7720 points.
This was Shankar’s first decathlon outing of the 2026 athletics season.

Relentless from 31-year-old winner, who said pre-fight that he would retire if he lost. Great action to open the card.

Alex Murphy vs Josh Holmes – lightweight Result: Holmes TKO 1. One of the most thrilling rounds you’ll see this year. Holmes looked hurt after a big right hand from Murphy, but fought fire with fire rather than holding on. He put Murphy down twice, hard, with referee Howard Foster waving it off after a count on the bell. Holmes moves to 18-0 with an army of new fans behind him.
Liam Davies vs Francesco Grandelli – featherweight Result: Davies RTD 6. An impressive performance from Davies. He took control from the very first bell and Grandelli struggled to cope with the pressure he was constantly put under. A big left hook in round four sent Grandelli to the canvas, and while the Italian showed a lot of heart and pride to get through the next couple of rounds, he was pulled out by his corner after round six as Davies becomes the new European featherweight champion.
Shakiel Thompson vs Brad Pauls – middleweight Result: Pauls TKO 9. Quite sensational from underdog Brad Pauls, who was being outpointed throughout the fight before changing everything with a right hand in the ninth round. Thompson made the first count but had no legs beneath him and Pauls went about business methodically, scoring another knockdown to lead referee Howard Foster to call a halt to proceedings. Fantastic comeback win.
