Blue Jays blank Mariners behind Cease as Okamoto earns Rookie of the Month

SEATTLE – Recognition of a strong June, during which he posted a .913 OPS with seven homers and 20 RBIs, arrived for Kazuma Okamoto on Friday morning, when he was named the American League’s Rookie of the Month.

He’s the first Toronto Blue Jays player to pick up the award since Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in July 2018 and his 19 homers so far this season are already the fifth-most by a rookie in team history. Combined with the way he’s acclimated to third base, he’s delivering as expected at the plate and beyond that in the field.

“He’s adjusted very well offensively and I think that the defensive part kind of gets put on the back burner because of the homers and the RBIs, but he’s been really damn good,” said manager John Schneider. “We always talk about him adjusting to pitches and pitch shapes and seeing guys he’s never seen, but he’s also adjusted really well to the speed of the game and understanding when he needs to be quick, when he needs to be slow and then just where he needs to be. He’s been everything we’d hoped for and a little bit more.”

The 30-year-old isn’t settling for what he’s accomplished to this point, either, saying through interpreter Yusuke Oshima that, “I still think I could be even better, just knowing myself.”

“Obviously came over here to the major-leagues to test myself and challenge myself,” he continued. “But knowing my abilities, I think I’ve got another gear.”

The Blue Jays can certainly use that, especially as they wait for their collective lineup to get out of neutral, a challenge that continues even after a 2-0 win over the Seattle Mariners.

An Andres Gimenez RBI double and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. run-scoring single in the second inning were all they could muster in the opener of this ALCS rematch, but an overpowering Dylan Cease made that standup for the team’s eighth victory when scoring just two runs.

“Our mindset is score as many runs as we can, of course, but I just want to talk about the pitching,” Guerrero, in comments interpreted by Hector Lebron, said of winning with so few runs. “The pitching was great tonight, it’s been great, not just the starters but also the bullpen after that.”

Rebounding from an erratic outing last time out, when he struck out 10 but walked a season-high five while not escaping the fifth against Texas, Cease allowed only three hits and a walk over seven shutout innings against the Mariners, striking out nine.

Of his efficient 102 pitches, 70 were strikes, and his stuff was so hard to track that Randy Arozarena challenged two called strikes in his first at-bat, only to see both were clear strikes, costing the Mariners their challenges in their second at-bat of the contest.

He was only in trouble once, when Cole Young and Victor Robles singled to open the third, but used a changeup to induce a double-play ball from rookie Colt Emerson, and after a walk to J.P. Crawford, got Arozarena on a groundout to second to end the frame.

Cease credited “a slight mechanical tweak,” tied to his sightlines when he peeks at third in his delivery, for the improved performance, as “once I felt comfortable with that, it was just letting the rhythm of everything take over.”

“I didn’t feel like I really got in a great rhythm until probably the fourth,” he added. “I didn’t really power the ball ’til a little later in the game when I really felt comfortable in my mechanics.”

Jeff Hoffman handled the eighth and Louis Varland took care of the ninth for his 18^th save, keeping the Blue Jays bullpen in good standing after an off-day. It was a much better ending than the last time they played at T-Mobile Park, when the Mariners rallied from a 2-1 deficit with a five-run eighth on a Cal Raleigh solo shot and Eugenio Suarez for a 6-2 win that put them up 3-2 in the ALCS.

“I was not in a good mood last time I was in this office, I can tell you that, in the post-season,” Schneider said. “New season, for sure. But whenever you walk into a place, you’re like, all right, what was I doing last time I was here? And there was some furniture rearrangement by me last time we were here before we hit the bird. They got it back in order, though. It’s good. … Nothing broke, nothing crazy. I helped with the cleanup, too. I was raised well.”

Okamoto had a single in four trips with a pair of rockets to the outfield as he continues to post for the Blue Jays.

While they believed in both his bat and his glove when they signed him, they were less certain what they had in him defensively as he split time at both infield corners in Japan. The plan was for Addison Barger to get some time at third, too, but his injury woes removed him from the mix, leaving Okamoto to play there every day.

Friday was his 82^nd game at the hot corner and he’s logged 727 innings there, third-most in the majors, underlining his durability. Last year with the NPB’s Yomiuri Giants, he played 54 games at third and hasn’t played this much there since playing 84 games there in 2023.

Had he not handled the transition on both sides of the ball as well as has, this season filled with improvisation would have been even more complicated for the Blue Jays.

“It’s hard to evaluate myself, not just defensively, but also offensively, I just want to continue to get better,” said Okamoto. “Obviously I’m making adjustments because the other teams are always scouting me, as well. There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes, but don’t want to give much away.”

Three months into his first big-league season, he needn’t worry about that.

That’s for how Dalke played. In round one at the BMW International Open, Dalke shot a three-under 69 at Golfclub Munchen Eichenried in Munich, Germany, then only one player bettered his 66 in round two on Friday, and he’s just two shots out of the lead heading into the weekend.

“It’s been obviously extremely fun last couple days,” Dalke said in a press conference afterward. “I think ball striking, I’ve hit it well enough to to score well and haven’t hit it perfect by any means, but I’ve been making a lot of putts and I think there was three or four putts in the last two days kind of on holes maybe I was struggling a little bit — needed a 10-footer for par or something — and I feel like I’ve made every single one of those putts just to kind of keep momentum going.

“And obviously yeah, I haven’t played a whole lot of competitive golf in the last three years so I didn’t really know what to expect — how my body would react, how my mind would react to all this — and I’ve been nervous, but I’ve played a lot of competitive golf in in my past life and it’s kind of kicked in so it’s been a lot of fun.”

That’s for the circumstances around why Dalke is leaving popular YouTube Golf group Good Good, which he revealed last week in a 19-minute video posted to his personal channel. In it, he said that his wife, Abbie, had an “eye stroke” last December that left her with vision loss in her left eye, and tests revealed the stroke was due to a hole in her heart, for which she underwent surgery last month.

This week, though, she traveled with Dalke to the tournament.

“I just feel like I didn’t live up to par when it comes to being a husband for Abbie during this whole process, and that kills me inside,” Dalke said. “And I hate it and I don’t want to be that way anymore. I want to be here for her more. I want to travel less. And I just think in this life in general but also in this industry, you can get pulled in so many different directions. You have to film here, you have this obligation here, you got to go golf with someone here — you got to go do all these things, and I just want to be centered with Abbie. I want to be centered with our future family. I just want to spend time with my wife and be present with my wife, because if there’s anything these last eight months have taught me, it’s that life can change in the blink of an eye, and I don’t want to let that pass because I was traveling.

“I want to be here with her. I want to be present. I want to be centered with her. She’s my girl. She’s my everything. She’s my rock. I hate the fact that she has had to go through all of this, and I hate the fact she has had to go through a lot of this a lot of the time without her husband. And I don’t want that to happen again.”

This week, while playing in a field that included major winners, PGA Tour pros, LIV Golf pros and DP World Tour pros, Dalke had the opportunity to show that he and his YouTube Golf mates could at least hang. Dalke, though, is accomplished. He played on a national-championship winning team while at the University of Oklahoma, and he was the runner-up at the 2016 U.S. Amateur, before yips with his swing slowed him.

YouTube play, though, helped him “learn how to have fun with golf again,” he said Friday. And he said he felt some pressure this week to represent that brand.

“The thing is, there’s some really good golfers in YouTube golf,” Dalke said. “I think we’re starting to show that with my performance so far here, Ryan Ruffels a couple months ago [at the PGA Tour’s OneFlight Myrtle Beach Classic]. A lot of guys have some really good pasts with golf and and performing in tournaments, and I’d like to say I was a good junior golfer and then struggled with some driver issues for a while and I just couldn’t really get over that. And luckily going to YouTube for me kind of helped me learn how to have fun with golf again and get through that tough time. And now I feel like I’m playing some really great golf and I have been for the last year and a half.

“And it’s cool to be able to come out here and show that I can do it in a tournament as well. And obviously there’s still two days left, a lot of golf left, but it’s been a little pressure, but I’m proud of myself for the way I’ve handled it the first couple days.”

Could the Dalke method work for others? He had some thoughts of whether someone could play YouTube Golf, then play pro events.

“[When I] got to pro golf, knew I needed to do work on things, grind on things, and I worked really hard, and it didn’t get any better,” Dalke said. “It actually got worse, and that’s why I kind of ended up getting into YouTube. So for me, honestly, in ways, especially with ball striking, the less practice the better, less overthinking. Obviously I still have to make sure my swing’s in good spots, but not just going out and grinding for five hours a day, ball striking-wise. Putting and chipping, I’ve been putting a lot more work in as of late trying to get that ready.

“But for me, I love to go play golf on the course; that’s how I get better. And obviously playing on YouTube, even though we’re filming, we’re playing a lot of golf. It’s not for everybody, but for me, I feel like YouTube’s almost better for my game because I get to go out there on the course, play a lot of golf. I’m not a range rat where I’m just going and hitting hours and hours of golf balls every day. So I think really it’s different for everybody, but for me, YouTube’s actually, I think, very good for my game.”

Could there be a future where players would opt for YouTube over tour play? In Dalke’s case, he’s playing this week on a sponsor exemption, and he’ll do so again later this month at the PGA Tour’s Rocket Classic and in mid-November — at a PGA Tour event sponsored by his friends at Good Good.

“YouTube has been great the last few years,” Dalke said. “And I’m at the point now where I’m doing well enough on YouTube, I don’t need to go grind through PGA Tour Americas. Korn Ferry, like that’s not what I want to do because there is not a whole lot of money in that and is very stressful and a lot of travel and so it’s a point of I’m in a good spot with YouTube. I’m not going to grind my way up.

“But if I were to come to an event like this and play well and somehow kind of build off that or playing in the Rocket Classic in a month, if I do well there and kind of build off that, if I got a tour card, that’d be awesome. That’d be sick. I would play 100 percent. That’s been my dream since I was little is to play competitive golf. And my game’s finally in a spot now where I feel like I can do that and do it well. So it’s a yes, I would play if I got a tour card, I would 100 percent do that.”

Can Dalke duplicate his play Saturday and Sunday? Maybe. Maybe not. He said he’ll start without expectations. He said he’ll try to have fun.

“That’s one thing I’ve learned a lot from YouTube is when I’m out there just having a good time, that’s usually when I play my best,” Dalke said. “So no expectations. Go have a great time. If I have a great day, awesome. If I have a terrible day, it is what it is. It’s golf. It’s a hard game. So just go out there and have a great time. No expectations and see what we can do.”

Hamann: Kimmich should step away from Germany duty

Captain Joshua Kimmich should retire from the Germany team following their World Cup last-32 exit, former national team midfielder Dietmar Hamann has said.

“He has had five tournaments in a leadership position and five times he hasn’t managed to achieve anything,” Hamann told the TOMorrow Business Podcast, also referring to Kimmich’s previous role as vice captain.

The 31-year-old is a midfielder for Bayern Munich but played right back for Germany in the United States.

“It has nothing to do with running away. It has to do with taking responsibility,” Hamann added. “If he is supposed to be this top player, he should take responsibility and say: ‘Right, it was wonderful here. I thank you for the support. I tried everything.’”

Keeper Manuel Neuer has already returned to international retirement and Jürgen Klopp looks poised to replace coach Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned. But no other Germany figure has yet announced their future plans.

Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani out Saturday after precautionary exit vs. Padres

LOS ANGELES — Shohei Ohtani left Friday night’s game against the San Diego Padres in the seventh inning with a right biceps issue and is unlikely to pitch in the All-Star Game after the Los Angeles Dodgers adjusted his schedule.

The two-way superstar was hitless in three at-bats before being lifted as a precaution. On the mound, Ohtani allowed three runs and seven hits in six innings. He struck out nine and threw a season-high 110 pitches before Los Angeles rallied for a 4-3 victory.

Ohtani said he felt the biceps issue during his at-bat in the sixth, when he flied out to right field.

“It’s the same location that I felt a couple months ago,” he said through a translator. “It went away pretty relatively quickly, so I expect that to happen again.”

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Ohtani would be given Saturday off to recover and receive treatment.

“He’s a quick healer and finds a way to get back,” said Roberts, who added that Ohtani’s previous biceps issue was “so benign that I didn’t hear about it until tonight.”

Ohtani has primarily been starting on the mound every Wednesday, but the team pushed him back to Friday this week to manage his workload.

Asked if that meant Ohtani was unlikely to pitch in the All-Star Game, Roberts said before the game: “I haven’t formally said it, but if you just kind of do the math, it would be hard to imagine. But I don’t have to make that decision quite yet.”

Roberts will manage the National League All-Stars in Philadelphia.

He said the possibility of Ohtani skipping his last pitching start before the All-Star break should “be on the table.”

Ohtani is already pencilled into the all-star starting lineup as the NL designated hitter because he was the overall leader with 3,341,257 votes after the first phase of fan balloting.

The right-hander is a strong candidate to be selected to the NL pitching staff as well, but Philadelphia left-hander Cristopher Sánchez seems most likely to start in his home ballpark. Milwaukee ace Jacob Misiorowski leads the majors with a 1.45 ERA but is on turn to pitch for the Brewers two days before the All-Star Game, which would make him unavailable against the American League.

Ohtani’s ERA rose to 1.79 from 1.58 after his start Friday.

The Dodgers wanted Ohtani to get additional rest during a stretch of 13 games in 13 days. If he makes his final scheduled start before the All-Star Game on July 10, that would give his arm only three days of rest prior to the Midsummer Showcase.

“Shohei hasn’t had his best stuff recently and that’s the truth,” Roberts said. “The fastball command hasn’t been what it was earlier in the season, the sweeper hasn’t been the same.”

Ohtani has been bothered by left knee soreness and has a blister on the middle finger of his right hand.

“He feels good, the body feels good,” Roberts said before Friday’s game. “The knee feels as good as it’s felt in quite some time, so that’s encouraging.”

Germany are a shadow of what they used to be on the pitch, but Paraguay can still proudly proclaim themselves to be giant slayers after they sent the Germans packing in the Round of 32. A gutsy performance dragged the game out to penalty kicks, where the Paraguayans kept their cool and delivered the knockout blow. It was a match that cost German manager Julian Nagelsmann his job.

Paraguay’s reward? A date with Kylian Mbappe and France, undoubtedly the tournament’s best team thus far. Les Blues have been downright terrifying. This isn’t a one-man show with Mbappe, even if he’s scored a hefty chunk of the goals. Reigning Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele is here too, as is Bayern Munich maestro Michael Olise, who may very well be the tournament’s MVP to this point. PSG attacker Bradley Barcola? Manchester City magician Rayan Cherki? They’re usually on the bench because of the sheer embarrassment of riches here.

Didier Deschamps, now coaching his last World Cup, has taken the shackles off his team. France used to win by controlling the game with possession and midfielders like N’Golo Kante. Now it’s an all-out attack that looks to punch you in the mouth and then throw another to your gut before you can catch your breath.

Paraguay, to their credit, showed plenty of defensive resilience against the Germans. But Germany have been harshly criticized for lacking a true killer in attack. Les Blues are a murderer’s row.

The upset of Germany was an amazing spectacle. But this is likely the end of the road for Paraguay, even if they make France work for their meal.

That performance against Germany makes it easy to forget that the United States put three goals past Paraguay before halftime. As good as the USMNT have been at this World Cup, they’re not France. It might take 15-20 minutes, but it wouldn’t be a surprise to see France land a few haymakers before halftime and then ease off the gas in the back end. It’s going to be brutally hot in Philadelphia, and the pitch could also be a mess from storms that are also in the forecast. Either way, Deschamps may want to get his stars off their feet as soon as possible to preserve them for the quarterfinals.

Ousmane Dembele anytime goalscorer (+145)

Dembele has grown into the tournament and had a hat trick in France’s shellacking of Norway and an assist against Sweden. We’ll take a gamble here and say that Dembele doesn’t just have a particular grudge against Scandinavia.

D'Tigers reach FIBA World Cup Qualifiers Second Round

Nigeria’s D’Tigers secured their place in the second round of the FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers after edging Guinea 80-79.

The narrow victory booked Nigeria’s place in the next stage and also handed Guinea their first defeat of the qualifying campaign.

In a game that was decided by just one point, D’Tigers held their nerve late on to seal another important win and continue their push toward a place at the FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Nigeria Basketball celebrated the result on social media, writing:

“NIGERIA WINS!!!!! WHAT A GAME!!”

Shortly after the victory, the federation also confirmed Nigeria’s qualification with another message that read:

“TEAM NIGERIA QUALIFIED – SECOND ROUND.”

The result continues an impressive run for D’Tigers, who followed up their victory over Tunisia with another hard-fought performance against one of the competition’s strongest teams.

With qualification for the second round now secured, Nigeria will shift its attention to the next phase of the qualifiers as the team moves a step closer to earning a place at the FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Wyndham Clark’s putter is June’s best seller, so I built one for myself

Wyndham Clark is on a bit of a roll this season, and much of it is due to his newfound love for the Ping Scottsdale TEC Ally Blue putter. It was the No.1 selling putter this month at Fairway Jockey, and they even made note to say that lots of customers are ordering a counter-balanced build just like Clark’s. I actually built up my own version of Clark’s putter to test for myself, so let’s talk about why it’s become such a popular build.

Clark got me thinking quite a bit about my putter choice. I also had the privilege of getting to go through a PLD fitting with the Ping team at their headquarters in Phoenix, trying out their eye-tracking performance that led to the development of the new Scottsdale TEC series of putters. Funny enough, this is the third time I’ve actually built this putter.

I ended up building mine at 36 inches instead of 38 because I’m significantly shorter than Clark is, and I installed a BGT Stability Polar shaft to go along with the build. I had to lead tape it, because Clark did, but I didn’t quite get my head weight up to 400+ grams like his is. Mine stayed somewhere around the mid 380s mark.

What’s so great about a counter-balanced style build like this is the free-swinging feel that it provides players. It just seems easier to consistently stroke the putter on a repeatable path. By having more weight in and above your hands, it makes the hands feel like they are taken out of the equation a little bit, and the putter head itself is given more control.

With the Scottsdale TEC specifically, players will also notice a more calming focus before they stroke the putter thanks to Ping’s “Eye Q” alignment aid developed using Quiet Eye Theory. If the combined feeling of increased focus and increased stability can help settle down Clark while he’s playing for millions, it can probably help us on the weekend as well.
